The Top 5 High Grossing Films of 2015

2015 was a high-flying year for the local cinema as 14 Urdu feature films released this year. We did not only see a significant rise in the number of films releasing this year but these films also performed outstandingly on the box office and set new records and raised the bar to new height.

Half of this year releases earned more than 5 crore on the box office each, which is a huge achievement for an industry in its nascent years of revival and having cut-throat competition with the imported content. The more promising fact is that the sum of domestic collections of all releases reached the 100 crore mark this year, which is a clear indication of increasing demand of local cinematic content.

Here is the list of top 5 highest grossing movies of this year.

JPNA cover1- Jawani Phir Nai Ani

This mega-cast starer comedy adventure film was a damn sure blockbuster when we watched its first teaser back in March this year, but no one had guessed such a monumental box office success of the film. It broke the record of Waar within three weeks and became highest grossing film of Pakistan of all times by minting more than 40 crores on the box office. The film also broke all previous records of highest first day and first weekend collections when it released on Eid-al-Azha (25 September).

Wrong Number feature2- Wrong Number

This debut film of Yasir Nawaz as a director was a perfect masala entertainer for releasing on the auspicious day of Eid-ul-Fitr (18 July). But, the film had to compete with two other mega releases, Mahira Khan and Humayun Saeed starer Bin Roye and Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The film competed well and became the second highest grossing film of the year by collecting around 15 crore on the box office. The spectacular public response of the film made it one of the longest running releases of the year as well.

Bin Roye cover3- Bin Roye

This Mahira Khan and Humayun Saeed starer romantic drama was released on Eid-ul-Fitr (18 July) and despite facing formidable competition from other two releases of Eid, Bajrangi Bhaijan and Wrong Number, it was successful in impressing the audience, especially the tear-jerkers loving female lot, and ran successfully for more than 50 days in the cinemas. It became the third highest grossing film of the year by earning the collections of around 11 crore on the box office. The film was also a huge overseas box office success.

KSL cover4- Karachi Se Lahore

This road-trip comedy by the debuting film producer/director Wajahat Rauf went highly successful when it was released just two weeks after Eid-ul-Fitr (31 July) and shared the screens with already successfully running three films Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Wrong Number and Bin Roye. The young cast of the film and fresh comedy helped it maintaining the strong position on the box office and making the lifetime domestic earnings of more than 10 crore.

Jalaibee cover5- Jalaibee

This one of the highly awaited movies and first major release of 2015 (20 March) was an above average box office success despite receiving mixed reviews from the audience and critics. The caper crime had an ensemble cast including debuting hunks Danish Taimoor, Uzair Jaswal and Waqar Ali Khan, which definitely played a significant role in its collections of more than 7 crore on the box office.
