Jeevan Nagar Dons Multiple Colours in Exciting First Episode

Jeevan Nagar first episode

After much fanfare and promotions that lasted for months, the new channel on the block Green Entertainment finally begins airing the first of its long list of fictional programs. Taking over the 9 PM slot on Monday is the drama Jeevan Nagar directed by Kashif Nisar and written by Awais Ahmed.

Set in a fictional neighborhood in Lahore, Jeevan Nagar boasts of a stellar cast including Sohail Ahmed, Rabia Butt, Noor-ul-Hassan, Khalid Butt, Kashif Mehmood, Saqib Sameer, Kinza Malik, Tahira Imam, Aamna Malick to name a few.

Jeevan Nagar Paints a Gloomy But Wonderful Visual

Director Kashif Nisar has once again built a world that brings forth the characters and situations which are often hidden in plain sight. At a complete contrast from the mainstream visuals of the currently Pakistani dramas which are all about the big havelis and lavish, dreamy sets; Jeevan Nagar takes you to the tight, almost claustrophobic galis that are surrounded by houses with open, airy verandas and connected rooftops that, from a distance, make the entire setting appear as one big unit. But within this homogenous looking area live characters each having different hues.

Jeevan Nagar is Home to Colorful Characters

Jeevan Nagar is as much as a character of the story as it is the setting of it. A fictional neighborhood somewhere within the heart of androon Lahore, Jeevan Nagar is home to a plethora of colorful characters, all of them immediately familiar to anyone who has ever experienced living life in a close-knit neighborhood.

Here you can find the skirmishes between a devrani and jethani over the topic of who does more chores, a young man jumping over rooftops to have clandestine meeting with his lover in the dark, a group of idle youth who don’t have anything productive to do but remark on the comings and goings of people around them, a pair of brothers dealing with the rush of customers at a general store on the eve of Eid ul Fitr, a pair of sisters walking home with freshly painted henna on their hands, and a young boy going house to house in the neighborhood delivering plates of freshly made food or sweets and waiting at the doorstep to get a full plate in return.

And to add more sparks to this already bustling neighborhood there’s also a new entrant, a beautiful and confident woman whose presence in Jeevan Nagar will rustle a few leaves and shake a few trees. We all know these people. For many viewers who’ll watch this episode, they are one of these people. The connection to this world is instantaneous.

Sohail Ahmed Stands Out

The character that truly stands apart, and perhaps is the booming heart of both his neighborhood and the story, is that of Babar Shah (Sohail Ahmed). A local goon who’s nothing less than a ruling head of Jeevan Nagar, Babar Shah has the love, admiration, and reverence of all the people of the neighborhood. He’s a goon with a heart of gold that makes sure no injustice befalls on any of the citizen of Jeevan Nagar. Beyond that, he also makes sure to maintain a one-on-one relationship with all of the inhabitants of the neighborhood, from the loitering goons to the hardworking, old kabadiya.

As warm his benevolence is, so is cold his rage. And if that wasn’t enough to make him an already spectacular character, Babar Shah is hiding a secret that could potentially destroy his image irreversibly.

Too Many Characters Do Add Confusion in the First Episode

The performances right off the bat are solid. Boasting of a huge ensemble cast of both veteran and new faces, each actor has embraced their character completely from their very first appearance. However, the downside to having a huge cast as this and giving almost all of them no proper introduction does lead to confusion about who is who.

There was simply just too much going on. The end credits of the episode also didn’t credit the actors alongside the characters they play so it might take some time for the viewers to become familiar with the characters.

The pace of the episode was fast and engaging throughout. The use of voice over to introduce key characters and happenings of the story was clever. Although, at some points the choice of BGM could’ve been better. Jeevan Nagar’s first episode has us hooked for sure.

The cliffhanger ending of the episode will definitely have us tuned in next week to find out more about these characters and the workings of this world.

Baby Baji Takes Bold Steps Towards Documenting Joint Family Troubles

Baby Baji Poster

Forty-five episodes in and ARY Digital’s soap opera Baby Baji is accumulating praise for its relatable content that just hits right with the audience.

Penned by Mansoor Ahmed Khan the plot is close to home for many viewers as the story centers around a desi joint-family household. It follows the life of a large family of four brothers, their wives and their parents who live together under one roof.

With an ensemble cast and various riveting plots, revolving around the main characters, that range from problems as huge as financial issues to daily conflicts like dividing the household chores, the drama appeals to the desi audience.

We bring you a list of 5 ways of how Baby Baji is highlighting desi household problems:

The fiasco of deciding between living in a nuclear family vs joint family

The drama highlights a very common topic that persists in desi family households i.e., deciding between living in a joint family system vs. shifting towards the nuclear family approach. The drama shows consistent pressure by the family’s eldest daughter-in-law to move in a separate house, which is always shut down and taken in a negative light. Many people will relate to it but in the end, the best decision lies in a mutual decision that works for both parties.

The ever-going debate between arranged marriage vs love marriage

The plot unfolds as emphasis is paid on the mother’s constant desire to marry her sons to the women she chooses. While three of her sons eventually marry their mother’s choice, her youngest son falls in love with her neighbour and desires to marry her. The drama talks about the conflict that this creates and while arranged marriages often work, sometimes parents can make wrong decisions and it is imperative that the child’s willingness are also taken into consideration.

The financial troubles in Baby Baji

The drama also addresses a very common problem that many households face regarding the powerplay that unfolds in the household after one member is the breadwinner while others depend on him/her. The script tactfully talks about this problem and describes how issues associated with money can cause fights and problems in the household. Many viewers will relate to this issue and will learn from the drama on how to adopt a positive outlook when such issues arise.

The maltreatment of women

One of the plots in the drama centers around the mistreatment of the daughters-in-law Asma, played by Sunita Marshall. While she is adored by the family for her kind nature, her husband, who is played by Hassan Ahmed is discourteous and uncivil towards her, ignoring Asma and their child. In fact, he even forcefully tries to abort his child, without his wife’s consent.

As the plot progresses we are hopeful that the direction will lead to Asma taking a stand for herself and her husband would strive to become a better person

The thin line between privacy and protectiveness in Baby Baji

With a joint family comes the involvement of the entire family who knows your business, and the makers have not forgotten to highlight this sensitive issue. The direction targets small nuances that many will find relatable including scrutiny on going out, keen judgment on eating and sleeping habits and even stalking of social media accounts!

All these points hit a nerve with viewers who find most of this stuff relatable. The audience can consider this drama as a reflection on mistakes and learn on how to build positive domestic relationships.

The drama boasts an ensemble cast including Saud Qasmi, Javeria Saud, Hassan Ahmed, Sunita Marshall, Junaid Jamshed Niazi, Samina Ahmad, Tuba Anwar, Fazal Hussain, Munawar Saeed, and Aina Asif among others. The drama is directed by Tehseen Khan and is written by Mansoor Ahmed Khan under the banner of iDream Entertainment.

Where Does Tere Bin Rank Among the Best Pakistani Dramas?

Tere Bin Last Episode

And so, it ends. After practically ruling all platforms related to the Pakistani entertainment industry, the tremendously successful drama Tere Bin bids adieu to its loyal audiences and hardcore fans. 58 episodes, 3+ billion views on Youtube collectively, and countless comments, posts, tweets, videos etc, Tere Bin set a new meaning of what it means to be “popular”.

Everyone associated with the drama reached a new peak of stardom, primarily its two headliners. For six months, every where one looked there was only subject of discussion – Tere Bin. It has been exhilarating and it has been exhausting and with the drama finally reaching its much-awaited conclusion, there is only one last question to be asked – is Tere Bin really one of the best dramas that our industry has ever produced?

The Best? Here’s Our Verdict

Well, obviously, no. “Best” as a qualifying word gets thrown around a lot whenever talking about practically anything. Oxford Dictionary defines the word “best” as “of the most excellent type or quality.” Over time, the usage of this word has evolved from its objective sense to encompass a more subjective perspective, as reflected in its current definition.

However, that doesn’t change the fact that when using a superlative like “best” to describe a piece of media, one invites comparison to the table. And compared to the other Pakistani dramas that we have had both in the classic PTV era and modern resurgence of Pakistani dramas from the late 2000s, where does Tere Bin stand in terms of being the “best”?

Oh, we are not denying the show’s popularity. But being popular and being best in terms of quality are not mutually exclusive. The former is temporary while the latter is timeless. There is a longevity that is the demand for any show to be remembered as the “best”. Will Tere Bin, regardless of how popular it is in the present, be able to sustain that memory in good faith a few months if not years down the line? We don’t really think so.

Studying Discussions Around the Show

Much of the discussion around the show has not been for the right reasons. From the very beginning, criticism about the show’s writing and some of its subtle messaging had been present on social media. The criticism only increased with time.

The drama’s inconsistent writing and toxic messaging reached an apex when the show tried to include a scene of marital rape in the story. Strong backlash against it all over the social media apparently forced the makers to re-edit the scene to not make it into marital rape. However, they only made a bigger mess of a show that was already spiraling down the pit of abysmal writing.

What Worked for Tere Bin?

Frankly, the only thing that worked for Tere Bin was the spectacular chemistry between its lead actors, Wahaj Ali and Yumna Zaidi. Tere Bin is only unique in terms of following a very Indian soap format of prioritizing the chemistry and unresolved sexual tension between its male and female protagonist above logical and consistent writing.

Surely, it worked for a while but there’s only so much that good acting and chemistry can salvage of a script that sometimes even forgot who the main characters even were of the story. Familiar tropes of a zaalim saas and lusty cousin, a mazloom heroine who for all her passionate speeches about empowerment couldn’t take a steady stand for himself, a dashing, sensible hero that became a zero in front of the saazishs played by his obviously villainous cousin whose evilness could be smelled from miles away basically make up the entirety of the show’s “plot”. Is this really what makes a show “best”?

How Does Tere Bin Rank?

The overall product can be best described as fungus invested cake wrapped in a fancy box. Sure, it looks pretty but not many will take a second bite. Although, apparently, we have plenty such people ready to take their second helpings of this feast as the producers have already announced a second season for the show. Just thinking about it is giving us a headache but we’ll deal with it when we get it.

So, What’s the Best We’ve Seen?

“Best” are the dramas that serve 1080p content even in 240p video quality. And we do have a list of best dramas that have stood a test of time with their nuanced writing, strong performances from all of the cast, and memorable characters that got their proper and logical development as the story progressed.

Dhoop Kinaray, Tanhaiyan, Alpha Bravo Charlie, Ankahi, Waris, Dhuwan – these are some of the PTV classics that can still enthrall viewers because of how honestly dedicated they were towards telling a good story with strong characters.

From more modern times we have Dastaan, Humsafar, Main Abdul Qadir Hoon, Qaid e Tanhai, Meri Zaat Zara-e-Benishan, Doraha, Daam, Zindagi Gulzar Hai, Diyar e Dil, Pyaray Afzal, Yakeen Ka Safar, Akbari Asgari, Aunn Zara, Mera Naseeb are just a few, top of the head, examples from modern times of dramas that have the kind of repeat value that Tere Bin most definitely does not.

These Pakistani dramas stay with you for the right reasons after you are done watching them. No one cares what their view count is; those superficial things cease to matter in front of the kind of quality content they serve. It’s these kinds of dramas that are the torchbearers of quality that is pride of Pakistani dramas internationally. It takes more than a glorious white shawl to be called the best here.

The Elusive Search for a Good Pakistani Sports Biopic Continues

Pakistani sports biopic

Welcome, fans of film and sport alike, to yet another story that features more twists and turns than the skyline of the Himalayas. A story where our filmmakers embark on the Herculean task of producing a single, solid Pakistani sports biopic about our national cricketing heroes… and unfortunately, drop the ball.

The Shadows of Misfires and Legal Woes

To start off, let’s revisit the illustrious attempt at cinema known as ‘Main Hoon Shahid Afridi’, a film that promised to be a heart-thumping tribute to our beloved all-rounder. Alas, the actual delivery was less ‘sizzling hook shot’ and more ‘droopped catch’. Now, we’re not saying the film was a disaster, but let’s just say it certainly didn’t score a century at the box office.

Shahid Afridi was mercurial on the day, and offered nothing less than box office stuff on the field. It’s sad that we missed an opportunity with him and haven’t translated that shocking fastest century into a movie or a documentary yet.

Just when we thought our luck couldn’t get worse, we got wind of a biopic in the works based on the life of the Rawalpindi Express himself, Shoaib Akhtar. The only problem? Our fast-paced maverick of a cricketer wasn’t onboard. As a result, we’re left with an unsolicited intermission in the saga, thanks to a stay order straight from the courts.

Now that we look at it, Akhtar’s biopic could have done wonders. Akhtar has had a seemingly troubled childhood. Before the Rawalpindi Express was tearing in and silencing crowds in Kolkata and Chennai, the young prodigy was roaming the streets of Rawalpindi for an opening. The box office nature of his introduction to cricket and the eventual success could have made a decent movie, but we’re left to rue what could be.

Also, what’s to say about a biopic on Imran Khan? Again, the film Kaptaan has been leading us on a sad cat and mouse chase. From release rumors in 2016 to 2022, all we have are just still shots of Abdul Mannan Khan and Saeeda Imtiaz as the leading pair.

Dear Bollywood, How Do You Do It?

Now eastwards to our neighbors, who are surely lighting a lamp somewhere laughing at our trail of box office woes. With Bollywood boasting an impressive lineup of sports biopics, from ’83’ featuring Kapil Dev’s World Cup exploits, to the inspiring journey of M.S Dhoni, we can’t help but feel a twinge of jealousy.

Let’s not forget Mary Kom and Milkha Singh, whose stories of triumph in the face of adversity have also been encapsulated wonderfully. Meanwhile, we’re left pondering over that age-old question: “Hum kahan hain?”

A Beacon of Hope for Pakistani Sports Biopic

To give credit where it’s due, we have managed to churn out a piece worth mentioning. ‘Bhaag Amina Bhaag‘, a cinematic tribute to sprinter Naseem Hameed who made us all proud by clinching gold in the 100m event at the South Asian games. The telefilm released in 2011 was impressive and showed the woes and story of Naseem. But surely, one swallow does not a summer make?

Remain hopeful, fellow patriots. The story isn’t over yet. If we can scale the dizzying heights of K2 and sprint across the finish line on the world stage, surely our filmmakers can dispatch a Pakistani sports biopic for a six too. For now, we aren’t short of ideas or inspiration, but actual implementation.

Sheheryar Munawar’s Directorial Budhi Ghori Laal Lagam Wins Eid Telefilm Race

GEO’s telefilm Budhi Ghori Laal Lagam refused to succumb to the pressure of competing telefilms releasing this Eid-ul-Adha and managed to make its way to the top.

Due to its stellar cast, refreshing storyline and of course the mega cameo by Pakistan’s biggest stars-Mahira Khan and Humayun Saeed- the telefilm undoubtedly managed to win the battle in the sea of telefilms.

Entertainment Packed in Budhi Ghori Laal Lagam:

Penned by Sheheryar Munawar, the telefilm broke the influx of stereotypical storylines and added something exciting and refreshing to the mix.

It follows the story of a couple in their 60s, Jahangir (played by Salman Shahid) and Zubi (played by Simi Raheal) who dedicate their entire lives to raising their children, Ayesha and Kareem. Once their children are settled down, they focus on the wellbeing of each other and strive to find happiness in the company of each other.

However, this is not well received by their children who find it odd that their parents are adopting an unconventional and carefree lifestyle while spending money.

The telefilm embodies reactions and emotions of different members of society and holistically presents the reasons for certain behaviors of characters that amalgamates seamlessly into a single narrative.

It talks in depth about the societal taboo associated with senior citizens having a life of their own and highlights the reactions of different members of society. While some are welcoming and praise the couple by calling them ‘couple goals’ others demean them for living a fulfilling life.

In addition, the portrayal of Jahangir and Zubi has been done aptly well by Salman Shahid and Simi Raheal respectively and their scenes added humor and awe-worthy moments simultaneously which made this telefilm the perfect blend of being thought-provoking and entertaining.

Mahira Khan and Humayun Saeed’s romantic cameo:

The Bin Roye duo made a surprise appearance on-screen that in itself was an eidi for all their fans. The silver screen stars won hearts even with a short cameo, reiterating their star power.

Mahira Khan donned a red sari her signature loose curls and red pout. Needless to say, she looked stunning as she stepped out in the rain with from the car. While Humayun Saeed looked charming as always and his star power was evident even with just a minute of screen time. They added the spark in the telefilm, making it larger than life and setting the tone for the rest of it.

Written and directed by Sheheryar Munawar Budhi Ghori Laal Lagam has a stellar cast which includes Salman Shahid, Simi Raheal, Ahsan Khan, Sarwat Gillani, Behroze Sabzwari, Asma Abbas, Huma Nawab, and Aadi Adeal Amjad.

Fairytale Season 2: What to Expect from the Second Season of Hit Serial

Hamza Sohail Will be Back as Farjad

Perhaps the most important revelation in the new OST is that Hamza Sohail will be back as Farjad in Fairytale S2.

As previously reported by us, Hamza Sohail and the team behind Fairytale had issues during the negotiation process, and it wasn’t clear whether Sohail would be part of season 2. The details have now been ironed out and Hamza Sohail will be back as Farjad in the sequel.

Fans Love Dreamy OST

The cover has been sung by Sehar Khan, Hamza Sohail, Adnan Raza Mir, Aena Khan and Tehseen Wajahat. The rendition is a harmonious blend of familiar voices that resonates with the audience and redefines the song for them, giving it a fresher outlook.

The ambiance of the location of the song alongside the chemistry that the actors brought to the screen added magic that Fairytale fans craved to see since the end of season 1.

Sehar Khan and Hamza Sohail were able to hit it out of the park and won the hearts of the fans with their melodious voices. In addition, Adnan Raza Mir and Aena Khan’s poetry in both Urdu and English added an invigorating flavor to the song.

A trip down the memory lane to season 1:

Fairytale’s season 1 was an amalgamation of comedy, romance, family drama, and a social commentary on the obsession with money, the greed to obtain it and the consequences that follow.

Directed by Ali Hassan and written by Sarah Majeed, Fairy Tale follows the story of Umeed (Sehar Khan) who is a young middle-class girl who dreams of living the life of luxury and is trying to find ways to make money quickly. Her life turns around when she wins 20 million rupees in a game show. The story continues from there highlighting the aftermath of negligence and avarice.

We also see two endearing love stories unfold alongside a lot of drama. The cast includes Sehar Khan, Hamza Sohail, Adnan Raza Mir, Aena Khan, Amna Yousaf Zai, Ali Safina, Salma Hassan, Tehseen Wajahat, Saleem Sheukh, Samna Ansar, Hina Rizvi and others.

Our expectations from Fairytale season 2:

Season one concluded on a high note thus raising our expectations for the season that follows. Here are our guesses for Fairytale season 2:

Farjad will strive to find the right balance between work and his personal life and will hopefully be less stubborn, allowing life to run its course. While Umeed would finally realize that there is no shortcut to earn money and she finally decides to work hard to earn it. As both Farjad and Umeed work on their weaknesses we hope to see their love story unfold further and Farjad’s mother finally accepts Umeed wholeheartedly.

Sameer and Haya will already be married, and they will continue their lives as a young couple.

Lastly, we have high hopes from our third couple, AK Khan and Mimi whose love story remained incomplete in season 1. We hope they mend their broken hearts in the process of finding their way to each other. That’s all folks. What are your hopes for the upcoming season? Do share with us.
