Many of our actresses entered Bollywood in the hopes of leaving a mark there, but not all succeeded. One of the country’s proudest acting exports to India, however, has to be Saba Qamar. Although, her Bollywood debut alongside Irrfan Khan was not your run of the mill story, the film scored not only critical praise but also went on to become the third-highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2017. The worldwide box office figures of the film stand at ₹334.36 crore.
Back in January, producer Bhushan Kumar confirmed that a sequel of the film was in the works with Irrfan Khan, but we were left confused when there was no mention of Saba Qamar. Well, if recent reports coming from India are to be believed, it’s the famous Bollywood jori of Shahrukh Khan and Kajol, who would join Irrfan Khan in the film’s second installment. The sequel is set to be based in New York, and will also have an entirely new story.
Saba Qamar Says…
We, at Galaxy Lollywood, contacted Saba Qamar for her comment on the development, and here is what the actress had to say, “The production team did approach me for the sequel as they really wanted to work with me, but due to the ongoing circumstances, it was not possible. I wish them all the luck and lots of love for the sequel and believe that everything that comes to you is destined. I am sure SRK and Kajol would do great, and I cannot wait to watch it”
The “circumstances” Saba points at are basically the political tensions between India and Pakistan, amidst which India has officially banned Pakistani artists to work there.
The Success of Hindi Medium
Besides the film’s successful box office run in India and numerous other countries, Hindi Medium was also the eleventh-biggest Bollywood export to China this year. The film collected over $34 million from Chinese cinemas.
Additionally, the film went on to win numerous awards, two of which were also Filmfares. While Irrfan bagged the ‘Best Actor’ award at Filmfare 2018, Hindi Medium was declared the ‘Best Film.’. Saba Qamar was also nominated for ‘Best Actress’ at the awards, making her the only Pakistani to be nominated in that category. Since the film released and garnered positive feedback, audiences, especially Pakistanis, wanted to see more of Saba Qamar and her acting prowess.
Well, the fans of the actress shouldn’t get too disappointed by the news, as Saba is currently doing Ary Digital’s Cheekh. And honestly, with that talent and star power, no one can afford to ignore the actress for long.
