Lahore deprived, while Karachi gets a dose of “Sex” and “Sunny Leone”

Sex Sells,

Sex+Horror is a deadly combo,

But Sex+Horror+Sunny Leone+Baby Doll.

Well this is something that was bound to take the box office by storm and that is exactly what happened in India when the film released yesterday and made a whooping 8.5 crore on the first day. Let me add that 8.5 crore is a mind-boggling figure considering that the film does not boast of huge stars and also the Pakistan-India match  held lots of people away from the cinema.

Even here in Karachi the film met with a positive response which is visible by the number of the shows the film has been getting in leading cinemas. But while Karachi was enjoying “Baby Doll”  on the silver screen, Lahore was left behind as CBFC did not allow the film to hit cinemas in Lahore as they considered the film to be a bit too racy for the audiences.

Wait, What? Karachi gets it but Lahore does not? What’s the reasoning you ask?

Well after the 18th  Amendment in the Constitution of Pakistan there has been this segregation of sorts ,whereby each province gets to censor the films which will be shown in its province. Sindh got itself the Sindh Board of Film Censors ( SBFC), which under the leadership of Fakhr-e-Alam has complete autonomy over what to show, censor and ban in Sindh . But Punjab along with  Khyber Pakhtunkhwa  and Balochistan is not so lucky and still has to follow the  Central Board of Film Censors (CBFC), as all these provinces are yet to form their own censor  boards.

Ever since this segregation there was always this unsaid rule that if one board does not pass the film the other boards pass will be of no good  because in monetary terms it does not make much sense to release a film only in one circuit. However Ragini MMS2, which was probably not that expensive for the distributors who saw profit by releasing it even in one circuit, broke this myth by releasing in only one province while being banned in the others.

Looks like the very liberal Fakhr-e-Alam just scored one point for his  Sindh board…

  1. Dear Momin,
What exactly this movie has to do with the Pakistan Film Industry. I can see certain changes in your policy just after having one trip to India.. 😀
Come on .. stop promoting their stuff … let it be there just for the prosperity of cinemas as we need Bollywood/Hollywood films for the survival.
    Cheers

    • Dear Imran,

Basically the point of the article was to highlight the fact that we have different censor boards for different provinces. Ragini MMS2 is the first film that is being released in Karachi and not in Lahore. Don’t you think that’s worth reporting?
Matlab we have two censor boards and even they have different opinions. I think that calls for an article. And I was not promoting India/Bollyood.

P.S how do you know I went to india?
