The modern Pakistani entertainment industry has witnessed a sea change in the past two decades. Satellite and cable channels replaced the state-run Pakistan television, and the long-staple of Pakistani entertainment, the television serials themselves have undergone a complete overhaul and have regained much of their long lost prestige and popularity. The film scene too has been through a revolution of sorts.
While a lot may have changed in recent memory, there is one constant that has been the bedrock of this progress. That person is none other than Humayun Saeed, who has reminded us with his latest serial Mere Paas Tum Ho why he is the star who has emerged victorious through the ebbs and flow of the fickle world of showbiz.
Creating innovative television serials
With many contemporary serials revolving around the saas-bahu theme and damsels in distress being the heroines in most of the projects, the maximum risk one saw television shows take involved depicting the now banal husbands-cheating-on-wives situations.
However, this trend has been challenged in recent years, with television plays handling out-of-the-box themes and subjects that were thought of as taboos or weren’t generally focused on otherwise. Humayun Saeed’s production house Six Sigma has produced a few such plays such as Pyarey Afzal and Jackson Heights which were definitely not run of the mill productions. Mere Paas Tum Ho, too, has been produced by the star’s production house and is a show that has recently broken all viewership records and is being appreciated by the audience with each episode being aired.
Mere Paas Tum Ho
Written by Khalil Ur Rehman Qamar, Mere Paas Tum Ho’s story revolves around a twisted wife cheating on husband scenario. A difficult subject to pull off, the skillful direction of Nadeem Baig along with deft performances by the cast has the audience hooked. The story revolves around a poverty-stricken couple, Danish and Mehwish, played by Humayun Saeed and Ayeza Khan respectively. Danish comes off as a loving husband and father, who is content with whatever life has given him. Mehwish on the other hand, although happy with her family, always seems to be allured by money and materialism.
Breaking new ground
Humayun Saeed has been the star of our industry with his charming looks and dazzling smile, but the way he has played Danish could only have been done by him. In the past he has breathed life into mainstream commercial Pakistani cinema – he played Punjab Nahi Jaungi’s Fawad Khagga with much panache, turning the film into 2017’s biggest hit, and his presence in the Jawani Phir Nahi Aani series of films has turned JPNA into the most lucrative movie franchise.
Danish in MPTH has an absolute opposite avatar to Humayun’s stereotypical machoness, which the audience is thoroughly loving due to Humayun’s flawless acting. While Adnan and Ayeza have been quite amazing themselves, Humayun has the whole audience rooting for the caring and sensitive Danish and sympathizing with him at the same time.
Humayun Saeed’s Danish is winning hearts
Humayun has won nothing but praises for his vulnerable character, by portraying Danish’s pain and nailing each emotion and nuanced expression. In an interview, Humayun revealed that he “Felt irritated while reading Meray Paas Tum Ho”, but his impeccable acting proves why he is the beloved star of our industry.
In one crucial scene in the play’s most recent episode, the actor quite effectively emoted his sincere feelings for on-screen wife Mehwish (played by Ayeza Khan), even after finding out about her betrayal and seeing revelatory pictures on her employer Shehwar’s (Adnan Siddiqui) phone. The teary eyes, the shaking hands, the quivering voice, Humayun painted the emotion of heartbreak flawlessly. Humayun’s character Danish goes on to wish his wife only the best of luck in her new relationship, tearfully – and the star handled this critical sequence so deftly that he not only made the audience a fan of Danish but also left them in awe of his acting skills.
Staging a renaissance in commercial cinema
The talented star brought a sea change to Pakistani cinema with his films Main Hoon Shahid Afridi, Jawani Phir Nahi Ani and its sequel, and of course Punjab Nahi Jaungi. These are films which Humayun’s production house Six Sigma International has produced as well, and they have not only proved that Humayun remains a star, but that he is also a skilled film producer who is actively involved in all parts of a film’s execution.
Whether it was JPNA’s manipulative but likable Sherry, or PNJ’s macho Fawad Khagga, the star has brought forward his A-game in films and pulled in the audiences in hoards, the box office numbers being a testament to this.
The Final Word
The coming few months will see Mere Paas Tum Ho complete its run, and by the end of the show, we are pretty certain that Humayun, the actor will once again emerge victorious as his character has already won the hearts of the audience! The star’s upcoming film projects are also expected to go on floors soon, and we cannot wait to update you with the latest Humayun Saeed has in store for his audience!
