Kaptaan’s release in doldrums

Making a film on a national hero; the one having fan-base in millions, and that too on independent basis, is really something where one must expect inevitable hurdles. Keep aside the resources required to make such a film, just the pressure of such a mammoth fan base to deliver what is really expected of the final product is something that can take nights away.

The new addition to the list of those finding it hard to balance between high claims and the ‘on ground’ realities is the team of; legendary cricketer turned philanthropist-politician, Imran Khan, based upcoming Pakistani film Kaptaan.

According to the latest story of Express Tribune on the film, Kaptaan has already missed its release deadline and that it’s still not expected to hit cinemas any time soon either. The movie has already been shot and re-shot for several reasons and is being again shot for the third time now, and that too in black-n-white format.

Yes, you heard it right, black and white it would be now. Apparently, after shooting was done for the first time, the director Faisal Amaan Khan looked unhappy with the outcome due to some technical glitches in the picture and it was decided to re-shoot the whole film, this time however, with a different cinematographer–the first time it was done by Lahore-based cinematographer Tariq Pitafi.

Such was the desperation of film’s production crew that they handed over the cinematography job to an editor, and after initial shooting for the second time now; still unsatisfied with the outcome, the production team decided to shoot the film in black and white format in order to have a safe escape as errors can be hid this way more easily.

It is also revealed that the crew decided to release the trailer when public pressure started reaching heights and people literally started abusing the Kaptaan crew for not delivering on time.

According to the report, the film is in shoots these days for the third time now, with Tariq Pitafi back on cinematographer seat and that again in black and white format, which obviously would disappoint many film fans.

On the side note, Imran Khan’s political party Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf has distanced itself from the film, saying, though the crew has met and discussed the film content with party chairman Imran Khan, but party neither supports the film financially nor any other sort of collaboration was extended to filmmakers.

A ‘Black and White’ film in a 3D era and that too after releasing the colored trailer and building so much hype, call it the ‘director being low on pragmatism’ or anything, but one can speculate the film going nowhere or at least not having a good end.
