If you have a perpetual belief that Pakistani cinema clutters its cinematic offerings on Eid only, you might want to reconsider that belief. The reason being the release line up for the last trimester of 2019. The films that we are about to mention, may not be grand offerings by Six Sigma or Filmwalas, but what’s interesting and encouraging is the diverse themes and genres of these films.

Below is a brief account of each of the film:

Daal Chaawal

Rease Date: 4th October 2019


Daal Chaawal is an upcoming film by Fun Club Production Company, which is a project by Punjab Safe City Authority (PSCA).

The interestingly titled film claims to be inspired by true events and is intended to pay homage to the police and its martyrs. Although the film might seem to lag in production values, its storyline shown in the trailer still manages to catch our attention. It seems to portray a lot of relevant social issues like poverty, unemployment, and terrorism. And not just that, the film, of course also has a romantic angle to it.

Prominent names from the film’s cast include veteran artists Salman Shahid and Shafqat Cheema, along with Ahmad Sufyan and Momina Iqbal in the lead roles. Moreover, singing maestro Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has been roped for a special song for the film that has been dedicated to the nation’s martyrs.

Durj

Release Date: 18th October 2019


Shamoon Abbasi’s long-awaited directorial début Durj, follows a reporter’s wife who seeks the truth of her missing husband. The trailer of the film made the rounds of social media and caught quite a lot of attention.

The crime thriller is also claimed to be inspired by true events, and it depicts the concept of Cannibalism; an idea which has not been explored by the subcontinent’s cinema before. However, according to Shamoon’s claims, Durj isn’t just about cannibalism, it has other chilling elements to it as well, accompanied by a thrilling storyline.

A fun fact about the film is that the lead female actress, Sherry Shah, went an extra mile and shaved her head as per her character requirements. Written by Shamoon Abbasi himself, Durj is a film for those who are interested in eccentric cinema.

Kaaf Kangana

Release Date: 25th October 2019

Kaaf Kangana is Khalil-Ur-Rehman Qamar’s dream project, through which he intends to début as a director. For those of you who are unaware of Khalil Qamar’s work, he is the mastermind behind super hit films like ‘Punjab Nahi Jaungi’ and ‘Koi Tujh Sa Kahan’ as their writer.

The film is a cross-border romantic drama, and it features celebrities like Sami Khan, Eshal Fayyaz, Ayesha Omer, Fiza Ali, Sajid Hasan, and Naseem Vicky. Moreover, Neelam Muneer is set to appear in a dance number in the film as well.

Kaaf Kangana was initially slated for this year’s Eid Ul Adha but was postponed to 25th October, for a worldwide release.

Talash

Release Date: 15th November 2019

Talash is a project by another debutante team called Zeekay Films, which is directed by Zeeshan Khan.

Set in interior Sindh, the film explores the idea of a commercial love triangle, along with the issues of child health and malnutrition, another novel subject for Pakistani cinema.

The lead actors in the film include Faria Hassan, Ahmed Zaib and Noaman Sami. Apart from all the newcomers, the cast also includes Sana Bucha, Mustafa Qureshi, Adnan Shah Tipu, Salim Mairaj, Mumtaz Kanwal, and Humaira Bano.

Sacch

Release Date: 10th December 2019

PTV fans from the 90s must be familiar with the husband-wife duo, who in the late 1990s, created hit dramas like ‘Ansoo’, ‘Des Pardes’, ‘Thori Khushi Thora Ghum’, and ‘Maa’.

After a long hiatus, Zulqifiqar Ahmad and Tasmina Sheikh are coming back with their debut film called ” Sach”, an expat romantic comedy, which will also serve as the launchpad for their daughter, Elysée Sheikh. The film’s shooting is said to be almost over, and it will see a cinematic release on 20th December 2019. The cast of the film includes Asad Zaman Khan
Humayoun Ashraf, Nauman Masood, Fazila Qazi, Javed Sheikh, Arisha Razi, Sarah Razi, and Uzma Gillani.

What’s even more interesting about the film is that ace cinematographers from Bollywood including Kabir Lal, with films like ‘Taal’, ‘Yaadein’ and ‘Yuvraaj’, are going to be in charge of the cinematography of the film. Moreover, from what can be seen from the teaser of the film, the film already seems like a visual treat.

The Legend Of Maula Jatt

Tentative Release Date: November/December 2019

TLMJ, has without a doubt, been the most awaited film of the year, but it has faced a lot of rearrangements. At first, it was supposed to release on Eid-Ul-Fitr, but was postponed until further notice. Although we don’t have concrete information about its release, it is rumored to release later this year.

An Encyclomedia and Lashari Films production, the film is directed by Bilal Lashari in association with AAA Motion Pictures, with Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Hamza Abbasi, and Humaima Malick in the lead roles.
