‘Industry-wallahs Hate Me’, Says Fahad Mustafa

Fahad Mustafa is no stranger to headline-grabbing statements. The Load Wedding star is known to indulge in a healthy mix of honesty, tongue in cheek bluster and good humor in his interviews. His game-show Jeeto Pakistan also puts his attention-worthy antics to good work.

Speaking in an interview about surviving in show-business for over two decades, that too in an industry that routinely witnesses one-hit wonders, Fahad quipped: “The industry-wallahs hate me. I would not have been able to stick around for so long had I not been talented – I would have been sitting at home instead,” he said, adding “I am not a very social person and I don’t like to meet people much. I would rather be playing cricket somewhere. By the grace of God, everything has clicked for me so far.”

On Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad

While that statement might have raised some eye-brows, rest assured, the star has no delusions about what makes him tick. “I am aware of what I can and cannot do – I cannot play James Bond. I play the common man, the everyman, that is how I am able to connect with people,” he explained in response to a query about the kind of roles he chooses.

Fahad further added that his upcoming venture with director Nabeel Qureshi will see him in a brand new avatar. “I am currently working on an out and out action film called Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad. You will be very surprised – It is going to be Pakistan’s first cop film.” Starring alongside Fahad in the project is of course, Mahira Khan. It seems the talented duo of Nabeel Qureshi and Fahad Mustafa are heading in a new direction after collaborating in a series of mostly lighthearted flicks with elements of drama and romance – which their fans will be surely looking forward to.

Final Word

Fahad Mustafa was missing in action in 2019, although last year’s Eid release Load Wedding did considerably well on its digital and satellite release. With his upcoming projects, the Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2 star is leaving no stone unturned to return to the silver screen with a bang. ‘I Don’t Need Fawad Khan To Be A Star,’ Claims Hira Mani

If there was one star who was truly born in 2019, it has to be Hira Mani. The actress’s performance propelled ARY Digital’s Do Bol to blockbuster status – if its humongous online views and stellar television ratings are any indicators. Previously, the audience fell in love with the actress for her realistic performance of a range of versatile characters in dramas such as Sun Yara, Paglu, Yakeen Ka Safar and Dil Moum Ka Diya. However, it was Do Bol which put her in the big league, and Hira knows it.

Currently essaying an important character in the hit of the season Meray Paas Tum Ho, Hira has certainly come of age since her stint as a video jockey, with which she began her career. And Hira knows that she has proven herself. In an interview recently, she said: “I don’t need Fawad Khan to be hit. I don’t need Sanjay Leela Bhansali to be hit. A person needs to perform well in order to get success and you can give that performance anywhere, in any serial or medium. I got a lead role in my first project Mohabbat Na Kariyo. Then I also got the lead in my second project and the list goes on. So you see, nobody plays characters the way I do.”

Hira is also a proud mother with two kids. She sees this as an accomplishment, saying: “I am the only actress who achieved this level of success after having kids. I am the only actress who gave birth to babies and then also appeared as a heroine on TV.”

It seems the Do Bol star is finally enjoying the perks and privileges of her well-deserved stardom which she has finally achieved after years and years of unflinching hard work. However, the comments leave us wondering if she is making a subtle reference to another actress. We leave you to draw your own conclusions.

Sahad’s Romance Missing As ‘Ye Dil Mera’ Looses Its Grip

Ever since MD Productions announced Sahad’s return to television screens with Ye Dil Mera following the hit Yakeen Ka Safar, excitement levels of their ardent fans hit a new high. The project had it all — a stellar team helmed by top-billed director Ahson Talish and celebrated writer Farhat Ishtiaq penning the script.

Therefore it comes as no surprise that the buzz surrounding the play was massive. Did all the hype actually result in a satisfying payoff for the audience? The answer is complicated. Despite a decent start, recent episodes of Ye Dil Mera seem to be slackening in terms of pace and plot development, and Sajal Aly and Ahad Raza Mir’s famed chemistry has so far not quite materialized in the manner that fans had been expecting.

Leaving the viewers puzzled

As viewers of the serial would know, Ahad and Sajal play Amaan and Noor-ul-Ain respectively, both having lived through an undisclosed trauma in the past. Adnan Siddiqui as Agha Jaan is Noor-ul-Ain’s overprotective father who seems to have a shadowy history of his own.

In a scene from Episode 5 we see Amaan and Noor having a Facebook chat and going by the expressions of the two, it seems to be a romantic chat and the two seem to be invested in each other — especially Noor. Shockingly, in their very next interaction, Noor doesn’t even feel comfortable sharing a lift with Amaan and instead tries to call her father to escort her. While it is implied that Sajal’s character (and possibly Ahad’s too) is suffering from a mental illness, such bizarre interactions happen quite a few times – enough for them to lose their impact, and the audience which is looking for their favorite couple to rock the screen in-turn feels disoriented, with the romantic pay-offs simply not happening.

The play started on an interesting note with a promise of unexpected twists and intriguing sub-plots. However, as the episodes progressed the writing seems to have run out of steam. The script by Farhat Ishtiaq has some fresh ideas but does not seem to be doing justice to the enormous talents of Ahad and Sajal, who are a power couple in their own right. The likeability factor for their characters is missing here.

Are the characters likeable?

Amaan’s character is a mystery to the viewers so far, as are his intentions towards Noor. This is made amply clear by a scene from Episode 6, where we see Noor having a breakdown of sorts in the lift after experiencing claustrophobia, and subsequent close-up shots highlight Amaan touching Noor in an uncomfortable way while consoling her. Noor, by this time, is on the verge of losing her consciousness. However the inexplicable happens and next, we see Noor writing in her diary that this was her only lift experience in which she didn’t get scared. Now, this doesn’t make much sense, especially for an average Pakistani drama viewer!

In any successful love story, the audience needs to feel for both the leads. Here, until now Amaan’s character hasn’t really gotten any element of sympathy. Usually, protagonists with gray shades or negative elements are given a backstory or a sub-plot which would make their character click with the audience and get their sympathy. In the serial, the audience simply finds it hard to trust Amaan’s antics. All the time we are left wondering: What exactly is he up to?

Sahad Factor

Ahad Raza Mir and Sajal Aly became a hot audience favorite after Yakeen Ka Safar’s surprise success. The two have cultivated a cult following and it was natural for viewers and fans to be super excited for the duo’s comeback on their television screens. They naturally wanted an out and out love-story, along the lines of Yakeen Ka Safar, which had a somewhat low key romantic track between the two.

After Sahad announced their engagement, the audience’s desire to see the two romance in their next performance reached a peak. However, Ye Dil Mera is more of a thriller, with the male protagonist being a doubtful character himself. Missing in action is the romantic interaction and the sizzling chemistry that propelled the two to super-stardom.

The play also has not fully utilized the beautiful locales of Islamabad, with most scenes being shot indoors. On the other hand, Yakeen Ka Safar used the Kashmiri sites to its fullest and made it an integral part of the narrative.

The script doesn’t give ample room for romance and the audience can’t help but wait to root for their favorite couple to share those special moments together as the story progresses. Speaking of which, the storyline too seems to be going downhill with multiple sub-plots taking focus away from the leads. Importantly, the screenplay lacks the grip and pace, two things key for making a romantic thriller work.

Repetitive writing

Watching the play, one gets the feeling that they have seen the characters somewhere before. The leading lady being the apple of her father’s eyes and very close to him is a role similar to what was penned for Maya Ali in Diyar-e-Dil. The dark and mysterious hero angle too has been tried and tested in dramas like Alvida (for Zahid Ahmed’s character) and Kankar (for Fahad Mustafa). Amaan’s character could have been an all-out villainish one to make it more interesting.

Moreover, as the story has progressed, the situations and scenes have become quite repetitive, such as the many sequences between Agha Jaan and Noor where the makers just want to depict how overtly protective the father is about his daughter. All of that registered already in the first episode itself. The dynamics of characters as they interact have not evolved much. Even Ahad and Sajjal’s scenes in the office cabins seem to be monotonous and one-dimensional. Overall, the viewer is left with a sense of deja-vu.

Final Verdict

Ye Dil Mera started on a promising note with a stellar cast, a superlative production house and the past success of Yakeen Ka Safar working in its favor. However, the lackluster writing gives no scope for a soulful romance between the leads which has personally disappointed me as a Sahad fan. The drama lacks the pace and novelty needed to make it work. The inconsistent narrative and multiple sub-plots hinder the grip of this play, which we hope gets better in the coming episodes.

Babar Ali’s Comeback ‘Betabiyan’ Sinks

Babar Ali’s comeback film Betabiyan, starring the veteran actor alongside a cast of newcomers comprising of Hiba Ali, Syed Arez and Saima Baloch released late last month on November 29. The long in the pipeline project went through a series of production snags, with its promos having made rounds of the social media for a few years now.

Predictably, it couldn’t score decent numbers at the box office, despite receiving a nation-wide release at all the major multiplexes in the country, that too during a period when there was literally no major competitor. According to estimates from EPK, it managed to collect in the region of 40 lacs in its opening weekend, however, bear in mind that these are not independently verified and at best can be taken as a gross indicator of the movie’s box office opening.

A dream debut

However, that is not how things always were like for the star. Once upon a time, almost 25 years ago in 1995, Babar Ali turned an overnight superstar with box office smash Jeeva in March of that year. This was later followed by the record-breaking blockbuster success of Munda Bigra Jaye which cemented his status as a star.

Babar delivered more hits with projects like Jo Darr Gaya Who Marr Gaya and Chor Machaye Shor and it seemed like there was no looking back. However, fortunes for the star changed for the worse come 1997 and by 1999, Punjabi cinema had taken over Lollywood. Babar struggled to find his footing in the new loud and garish type of films being churned out and eventually settled for starring in negative characters in films such as Larki Punjaban and Mehndi Walay Hath.

Failure to relaunch

Babar Ali’s fans continued to root for the star whose career prospects blossomed with the short-lived revival period of Urdu cinema in the mid-90s. He attempted a comeback to the silver screen with Bhai Log and Son Of Pakistan, however none of these were lead roles and it seemed his film career hit a dead-end, as the star ended up working on some television shows and some non-descript film productions. Despite having starred in some popular television serials such as Boota From Toba Tek Singh and Landa Bazaar he was not able to capitalize on his film popularity for the small screen. His recent television projects such as Laal Ishq have not seemed to attract much audience interest either.

The fate of Betabiyan will be another unfortunate blow to the star’s career. The project was high on gloss and glamor – although in a very garish, old-school Lollywood way, and ultimately neither delivered on star power or content, two things needed to make a film work at theaters.

Final word

All hope is not lost for Babar will be seen once again in The Legend Of Maula Jatt, which is still awaiting its release. We certainly look forward to that and hope it can turn around the fortunes for this very talented actor who once was able to make the audiences swoon with his signature shoulder-length locks.

‘Chal Mera Putt 2’ Starts Shooting With 3 Pakistani Comedians

Punjabi film Chal Mera Putt became an unexpected global box-office smash when released in late July this year. The film, which starred top-billed Pakistani comedians Iftikhar Thakur, Nasir Chinyoti, Akram Udas along with stars Amrinder Gill and Simi Chahal did particularly well with the South Asian diaspora in the UK, as well as its home audience in Indian Punjab. It ended up being the top Punjabi grosser overseas with earnings of around $ 3.6 million.

The movie’s plot, which centered on the hilarious travails of a group of six illegal immigrants on their quest for a British residence card, relied on the slapstick brand of comedy and juggatbazi to work. The three Pakistani comedians especially received many brickbats from the audience for their unique flavor of comedy and were propelled to global stardom with the success of the movie.

Now the film’s makers are back in action with its sequel starring the original’s cast members, with actress Simi Chahal playing the lead opposite Amrinder Gill. The sequel began shooting last month in the UK, with Simi taking to her social media handle to share a picture and a clip of a prayer from the sets. Sharing the clip, she wrote, “Waheguru ji! May your blessings, and prayers from both the ‘Panjabs’ be with us in this beautiful journey.”

It remains to be seen in what manner the makers will decide to take the plot of the original’s forward in the sequel. In whatever manner that works out, the audience can be sure of another laugh riot with the hilarious trio of Iftikhar Thakur, Nasir Chinyoti and Akram Udas on board. Here’s hoping that their fans on this side of the border will also get to enjoy their favorite actors on the silver screen, this time around.

”Fatman’ Is A Daring Look At Body Shaming,’ Says Ahmad Ali Butt

His knack of smelling good scripts, sheer hard work and dedication to his profession has made him one of the genuinely versatile talents in the industry. Yes, we are talking about Ahmad Ali Butt – who has made the audience crack up with his wit, humor, and perfect comic timing every time he makes an appearance on screen. Not just that, he has proven quite effective with his dramatic acts as well.

Ahmad is going great guns — he is playing the leading role in his next film Fatman, which will be directed by hotshot filmmaker Nabeel Qureshi. Other than that film, his next drama serial Jhooti features him in a completely different avatar. We caught up with the actor for a quick chat to learn more about these exciting projects.

How would you describe Fatman? What’s the USP of the film?

Fatman is a story about a guy who is overweight. It’s a relationship between a father and son; and how his physical appearance affects their relationship. The USP of the film is body shaming.

What was it about the part that interested you?

The daring subject excited me the most, which we usually don’t talk about. It’s largely prevalent in our society. I was very clear that it’s a different and experimental subject from the outset, right from when Nabeel told me the name. The script is amazing and we will come up with a good film.

You are playing the lead protagonist in the film. Do you feel any pressure to carry off a film entirely on your shoulders?

For me, the pressure is the same, whether it’s the leading or supporting role. One has to perform well and according to the director’s expectation, as per what the story demands. However, you are at the forefront while doing a lead role, so you have to be more aware of your performance and not disappoint.

Fatman addresses issues of body shaming, tell me how difficult is it to laugh at yourself?

Comedy is always at someone’s expense, the first rule of comedy is if you can’t make fun of yourself, don’t be in this business. I’ve been doing comedy all my life; it comes very naturally to me. I am comfortable in my own skin and making fun of my own self.

Who is the leading lady?

It’s a surprise! I think the makers are in talks with Jessica Chastain (laughs).

Nabeel Qureshi has a good track record of successful films. What qualities do you look for in a director?

The special thing about Nabeel is that his cinema is real; it depicts society brutally and honestly and Fatman isn’t an exception — it’s a bold topic. His work speaks volumes, he really puts in time and effort into each project and does detailed research work. I always wanted to work with him; in fact, any actor would be lucky to be part of his films.

Have you started shooting for it?

We will begin filming in February.

Tell us about your next drama serial Jhooti.

Jhooti is my next TV project with Yasir Hussain and Iqra Aziz. We play husband and wife; it’s a story of a husband married to a compulsive liar. It depicts how their life gets affected because of a single lie. It’s a different and serious role as compared to Fatman. Jhooti is produced by iDreams and will air from next month.

How important is your role to the plot? What has the play different to offer?

Abdullah Seja (iDreams) told me about this script that has a character for me which is very different. He’s not a typical hero; he has the persona of a real-life hero. I did the project due to the realism of the script.

Iqra Aziz has emerged as one of the finest actresses of the industry. What kind of an equation did you share with her during the making?

Iqra has great potential; she is young and fearless. She studies her character, comes well prepared on sets. I have worked with many actresses but according to her age and experience, she is way ahead. I had most of my scenes with her, she has amazing work ethics. I had a pretty good time working with her.

How involved do you get with your characters?

The more you prepare for a character; the brighter it will shine on screen. The director’s input will help you to portray it more realistically. I had time to prepare for my character in Jhooti, the look, the tone, and the movements. Resultantly we came out with something very interesting.

You have carved quite a niche for yourself. Who do you see as your competition?

We are a small industry; I don’t see anybody as competition. I see a lot of people as inspiration.

What brings out the best in you?

A good script, a good director and a great team.

There are a couple of things in the pipeline; once they get finalized you’ll get to know.

Is Yasir Nawaz’s Next With Feroze Khan And Mawra Hocane Shelved?

Yasir Nawaz made headlines when he announced earlier in November that his next film will star hot audience favorites Feroze Khan and Mawra Hocane. The movie, which he said would be a “thriller with commercial elements” was set to go on floors almost immediately, with the pre-production having been wrapped up. However, that has not quite happened so far, which sent the grapevine buzzing as to what exactly was up with the project, which some said had been titled Chakkar? A few within industry circles even whispered that the project had been shelved.

All of this prodded us to get in touch with the man helming the much talked about project himself.

No Chakkar with Chakkar

Speaking to Galaxy Lollywood, Yasir stated for the record: “For the next month or so, I am going to be quite busy with my newly launched restaurant, and that is what I am focusing on presently. This has caused the delay — the film with Feroze and Mawra is definitely not shelved.”

The venture is much anticipated as not only it marks Yasir’s return after this year’s surprise hit Wrong No. 2 but will also be Feroze Khan’s comeback of sorts to filmdom after Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai. We couldn’t help but ask Yasir that when this commercial thriller will actually go on floors? “We expect the project to roll around January, early next year, Inshallah,” was his response, putting all the speculations to rest.

Will it release next year?

Yasir is known for his back to back, breakneck speed of filmmaking – Wrong No. 2 wrapped up its shooting spell within a three month period, whereas his previous ventures Wrong No. and Mehrunnisa V Lub U also featured no glitches once the projects hit the floors. The same can be expected from Chakkar and we would not be surprised if he plans to line up his film for release on the coming Eid-ul-Fitr or Eid-ul-Azha. This is one efficient filmmaker!

Fatima Sohail Says Leaked Video Not Hers And Approaches FIA

This fall, it’s scandal season in tinsel town! The first victim of what was alleged by some to be revenge-pornography was Rabi Pirzada. In that infamous episode, the Shor Sharaba lass’s private pictures and videos were leaked online to an unexpected furor. Turns out that was not the last Pakistani showbiz would be witnessing of what has become a vicious online phenomenon.

Sex, Lies and Video

The past few days, ‘leaked’ private videos that purportedly show Mohsin Abbas Haider’s former wife Fatima Sohail have been doing the rounds on WhatsApp and social media. They have led to a furious reaction from Fatima who simply and plainly says that the intimate footage is not hers. However, that did not stop the Twitterati from launching various conspiracy theories, including linking Mohsin Abbas Haider to the entire episode. Mohsin and Fatima had an acrimonious break-up and divorce earlier in July following allegations made by Fatima of domestic abuse.

Furious Fatima

Fatima was having none of what the online rumor-mill was brewing and issued a strongly worded statement on her Instagram account. She said “Recently an inappropriate video is trending falsely with my name recently. I have nothing to do with this video and surprisingly the lady in the video does not even resemble me!” Importantly, she added that she would be taking legal recourse. “I have taken a legal action & filed a complaint with FIA!”

According to her, the agency’s forensics confirmed that the video featured someone else. “As per their forensic report this is some other lady. We are now investigating and will soon share who circulated this video and tried to defame me,” she claimed on her Instagram account.

Per the document shared by Fatima over social media, the crime investigation agency has issued directives to Pakistan Telecommunications Authority to take down the video.

The actress posted a copy of her complaint, angrily denouncing “I am disgusted to know to what extend (sic) someone can go or how low some one (sic) can stoop down to?”

She concluded her Instagram binge by stating: “Thank God we have units like FIA cybercrime. In fact, what would I have done without such a reputable and strong cyber-crime support to validate my claims?”

What’s next?

We hope the FIA investigation brings this ugly episode to its natural conclusion. However, something tells us that this is not the last we would hear of such vicious scandals. The drip-feed of attempted defamation is not unique to Pakistani showbiz — alleged videos of many K-pop acts have been leaked recently shattering the image of that industry which built a global fan base around its boyish stars and their carefully cultivated clean-cut image. We only hope that the culprits in Fatima’s case are caught and face justice. After all, it is time that Fatima and Mohsin both moved on to pursue their professional career goals, and we wish them the best!

The British Asian publication ‘Eastern Eye’ just published its ‘Sexiest Asian Men’ and ‘Sexiest Asian Men of the Decade’ lists and netizens and film buffs, like myself, have a lot to say!

Pakistanis in the list

The lists featured the names of many tantalizingly delectable men but our focus had to be on Bilal Ashraf, who was named 7th sexiest man in Asia and on Ali Zafar, the 3rd sexiest South Asian man of the decade.

Bilal (at 7), Ali Rehman Khan (at 29), Ali Zafar (at 12) Fawad Khan (at 14), Shehryar Munawar (at 43) and Azfar Rehman (at 49) were the Pakistani actors to make the sexiest men of the year list for 2019. Bilal was the only one featured among the top 10 and told the publication, “I am beyond humbled to be featured as part of a list among such legendary gentlemen and that, year on year, has generated so much attention globally. This has come to me as an amazing surprise and such moments make the struggle and commitment we all put into our work all worth the while. This encourages me to try my best to further myself in my field. I’m extremely grateful for this recognition.” The Superstar hunk has been on our sex appeal radar for a while, and we are glad he made it to the list.

Ali Zafar was also humbled at the mention and said, “What can I say. The love bestowed upon me repeatedly over the years is heartwarming. Even when he is playing a villain with dubious motives, the audience cannot help but root for him and fall for his refined on-screen persona.

We keenly await Feroze to set the silver screen on fire in his upcoming film that is being helmed by Yasir Nawaz.

Will ‘Ghalti’ Be Able To Replicate The Success Of ‘Do Bol’?

Hira Mani and Affan Waheed struck gold earlier this year with ARY’s Do Bol directed by the ace director, Syed Wajahat Hussain. The drama serial clocked peak ratings, part of which was due to its chartbuster OST and an interesting plot.

However, one of the biggest highlights of the play was Affan and Hira’s fresh pairing and amazing screen chemistry which worked wonders with the audiences. The duo is back with their latest offering on the same channel, Ghalti, and now the question on everyone’s mind is: Will it go the Do Bol way?

Ghalti

Ghalti is directed by Saba Hameed, a veteran actress who has been wanting to direct a project for many years and finally zeroed on this script as it deals with a social issue.

The project is based on anger management issues and how they affect a young married couple played by Affan and Hira. Notably, the male protagonist in the play has anger issues, while Hira plays a wife who initially believes in compromising and succumbs to the patriarchal norms until she gets a wake-up call and then starts demanding respect from her beau.

The actress revealed one of her favorite lines from the play’s script, “Mohabbat se pehle izzat chahiye” and believes that women should be mindful of the fact that they get respect along with love. It’s a role reversal for the two in this play as the characteristics are completing contrasting to their previous venture. Affan plays the headstrong husband and Hira a succumbing wife.

Affan mentioned that in our society wives are usually the scapegoat for aggressive husbands and this drama also sheds light on this spectrum.

Teasers overview

It is rather apparent that ARY Digital is capitalizing on the super-success of Do Bol. The channel has released multiple teasers of the play and going by them we can sense that the plot revolves around a lovelorn tale that will pack a high-octane roller coaster of emotions. Both Hira and Afffan are sharing crackling chemistry in the teasers, exactly like Do Bol. We also get a peek of the duo’s wedding sequence and a romantic encounter at a beautiful location in color-coordinated costumes. The two ooze romantic vibes — with the added twist of emotional turmoil in their eyes.

Will it match Do Bol?

The highlight of Do Bol was an indescribable on-screen bond that Hira and Affan shared. The two made their characters so real, so believable, that the viewers could literally feel their pain and suffering – as well as their joy. This was in no small part due to Hira Mani’s unique ability to emote pain and her distinctly spirited demeanor, as well as Affan Waheed’s amazing ability to make Badar a realistic, sensitive character. When Hira’s Gaiti was distressed, in love or facing emotional turmoil in her relationship with Badar, the audience sensed it. They could just as well sense the anguish which Badar felt.

As far as we can tell from the Ghalti’s teasers, the duo has lived up to their high billing and their on-screen bond is as palpable as it has ever been. Affan appears convincing in a more grey character whereas Hira looks every bit the distressed housewife who deserves all the audience empathy. Add the fact that the play has been directed by Saba Hameed – who is a masterful performer in her own right, and it would not be hyperbolic to say that Ghalti might very well match or surpass the expectations that Do Bol has raised so high.

Moreover, the serial will have something more to offer than just relying on Do Bol’s success and on-screen pairing – Hira and Affan have revealed that they were flooded with many offers right after Do Bol’s premiere episode but they had to choose a project which would do justice to their pairing and which would also provide something new for the viewers.

The final verdict

Ghalti promises not to just rely on the previous success and on-screen chemistry of Hira Mani and Affan Waheed’s hit pairing. It also seems to have an engaging, interesting storyline that touches the relevant social problem of anger management that we are sure will be dealt with intelligently and sensitively given that it’s being directed by an actress of Saba Hameed’s caliber. The play will go on air in the coming weeks on ARY and it surely seems that Hira and Affan have another winner on their hands!
