Zinda Bhaag (Review): Fil-lum set aay, Fil-lum hit aay and it might just win Pakistan an Oscar says Momin Ali Munshi.

kurri

Kuri Yes A,
Oh Kuri Yes A,
Tay Munda Set A,
Haan Munda Set A,
Chal kuriye beja kaul,
Khati mithi jai tension…

Well this is how one particular song from the movie goes, a song I just can’t seem to get out of my head. All the funky costumes, the exaggerated filmy expressions and the zany dance moves. It would not be wrong to say that this entire song was just one big celebration marking the rebirth of Pakistani Cinema. I have been humming this song ever since I saw it on the silver screen and hence even the title of this review is a play on the lyrics of this very song .

Express Tribune:

Amir Munawar entered the world of entertainment with Ali Azmat’s band Jupiters. He has composed music for pop artists like Hadiqa Kiyani and has also emerged as a strong music composer in Lollywood during the early ‘90s. He composed tracks alongside music maestros such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Robin Ghosh before he vanished from the scene.

Following a long hiatus in his music career, he is set to make the perfect comeback with the much-awaited movie of the year, Waar.

Urdu Film Festival: Aperto Per le Iscrizioni Ora (Open For Entries Now)

Urdu Film Festival (UFFB)

Filmmakers-check, movies-check, cinemas-check, an Urdu Film Festival, Really? That too on an international platform-okay, not even the C of check. Isn’t it the icing on the cake that just when we have started getting quality local films in our cinemas, and a new life seems to have been blown into what looked to be an almost dead soul of Pakistan film industry, a festival gets announced, a much needed film festival dedicated solely to Urdu films, and the fact that it will be held on an international location, makes it even bigger. You ask why? Well, because this is what will hugely help the local film industry in marketing and propagating the national culture, our nerrative, Pakistan’s nerrative, outside our regular boundaries.

Zinda Bhaag and the Oscar ruse: Thokha ho rya aay taaday naal.

So by now almost all of you know that the up-coming film Zinda Bhaag is going to be Pakistan’s official entry in the “Foreign Film” category at the OSCARS . Furthermore it has been 50 years since Pakistan last submitted a film so this makes it even more special. Other films in consideration included Josh, Chambaili and Seedlings but Zinda Bhaag is the chosen one.

So what’s the thokha ( yes the Punjabi title was apt considering that the film is in Punjabi too) you ask? Well doesnt it seem strange that a week from the release all you read about the film now is how its the Oscar consideration? All the publicity is kind of riding on it? While I cannot judge the film Zinda Bhaag as I have yet not seen it but those who have had a chance to see it also claim that Chambaili was the far better contender.

In this article I will not comment on the quality of ZInda Bhaag as I have yet not seen it but will just  try to explain what the Pakistani Oscar committee has done and how many Oscar rules have been broken. So here goes

oscar buzz

Rule Thirteen: Special Rules for the Foreign Language Film Award

V.   ADVERTISING / PUBLICITY RESTRICTIONS Only motion pictures that receive nominations or Academy Awards may refer to their Academy endorsements in advertising and publicity materials.  A motion picture that is selected for inclusion in the semifinal round of competition may not identify itself as an “Academy Award finalist,” “Academy Award shortlist film” or the like in its individual marketing or publicity.

Let me explain  it in steps :- The Oscar committee of any particular country chooses one film  to send in for consideration. All the other countries do so too an then the Oscar people short-list five films which are the official nominations and one of them will win. Now the rule above should make sense and the fact that Zinda Bhaag is HEAVILY being promoted as the Oscar nominee where it has just been sent in for consideration violates this Oscar Rule.

naseerudin

II  ELIGIBILITY

E. The submitting country must certify that creative control of the motion picture was largely in the hands of citizens or residents of that country.

Naseerudin Shah- one of the main character in the film is an Indian actor

Meenu Gaur -Director and writer  is an Indian film-maker

Shan Mohammad – Editor of the film is from Mumbai

Satya Rai Nagpaul -Cinematographer from Mumbai

Vipin Bhatti – Sound designer  from Mumbai

Also a number of Indian technical experts have worked behind the scenes.

AND I rest my case.

release zinda

II  ELIGIBILITY

A The motion picture must be first released in the country submitting it no earlier than October 1, 2012, and no later than September 30, 2013, and be first publicly exhibited for at least seven consecutive days in a commercial motion picture theater for the profit of the producer and exhibitor.

Reading the press release sent out by the UPA United Producers Association in Pakistan  we  here at Galaxy Lollywood have found out that though the international deadline was September 30 but the Pakistani committee had announced that they will only be taking films released up and until 26 August 2013. Though this does not violate the Oscar rule but speaks volume about the Pakistani Oscar committee.

Also the rule clearly mentions that the film must be publicly exhibited for at least seven days before being sent in for consideration. Although the rule does seem a bit trivial but there is a reason it is there, How can the committee decide on sending the film if it has not even released ( leave the 7 day  clause). Moreover the deadline of announcement was September 30 so that should have been the day when the formal announcement of Zinda Bhaag should have been made. Making it earlier only generated  hype for the film using the OSCAR tag!

committee

III Submission

A Each country shall be invited to submit its best motion picture to the Academy.  Selection of that picture shall be made by one organization, jury or committee that should include artists and/or craftspeople from the field of motion pictures.

A lot has already been said about the committee  and you can read it all  here at the ExpressTribune.

Lollywood star Resham all geared up for her comeback film Swaarangi.

What? Where? Resham? That tv chic?Coming back? What Comeback? How?

Well if there is one thing that India has taught us in the recent times it is that if an actress goes missing from the film scene ,even if it is for an extremely  brief period of time ,and then does  her next film it is for sure termed as a comeback. Aishwariya Rai who did her last film in 2010 and now is about to start shooting for her next film, guess what,  the media has already named it as  the comeback of Aishwariya Rai. So then it is only fair that we call our own Resham’s coming back to the big screen after a seven year hiatus the TRUE COMEBACK . Yes Resham is finally returning to the silver screen and the film she’s  chosen is called “Swaarangi.”

2

The last film Resham did before bidding films goodbye was Sangeeta’s Tadap which If my memory serves me right was a commendable effort made by the team. After this Resham like many of her contemporaries moved towards televison, where she did quite some quality shows, but now in year 2013 we see Resham coming back to her first love i.e cinema.

The film titled Swaarangi has Resham and Ayub Khosa in prominent roles with a bunch of talented new actors doing the supporting roles. A brief synopsis ( No spoilers) of the film would be that Resham is tired of her husband’s drug addiction and the husband has a friend to blame for all of this and there is also a mysterious Saeein ( Ayub Khosa) and all their lives are interconnected somehow.

The film which is  currently in the post-production period has been shot at the picturesque locations of Mianwali among others.  In a chat with Galaxy lollywood Mazhar Abbas the producer of the film told us that  “Ninety percent of the film has been shot in the exteriors and it took us four months and three spells to complete the shoot.”

3

Furthermore he added that “Resham  who was not accepting any films due to monotonous characters accepted Swaarangi because the role being offerred was very strong and  challenging. Similarly Ayub Khosa also loved the script”  Lastly Mazhar Abbas added that “The film has a blend of young and experienced actors”. The release date of the film is not yet announced but we will let you know when it is announced. Here we are attaching the teaser of song from the film. Enjoy 🙂

News Bits: As the Mighty September Begins

Zinda Bhaag 2

The Delay:

The biggest news as the ‘Mighty September’ begins is a little sad one. Upcoming indie film Zinda Bhaag, which was initially marked for a 6th September–Friday release, has been hit with a little delay. But don’t turn your sad mood on instantly, the good news is that the film hasn’t gone much far on its new release date, as it will now be releasing on 20th of this month.

The Proxy War between Geo & ARY Films: Who hits next?

ARY VS GEO

Follow Pakistani channels for a week and you will get one thing clear in your head, if there is any media rivalry worth calling a ‘rivalry’, it’s between ARY and Geo. If Geo has/had Nadaniyan, ARY has got Bulbulay, if Geo has Aamir Liaquat, ARY has Junaid Jamshed, if Geo has Capital Talk, ARY gets you things Off the Record, if Geo is quickest, ARY is expected to be the authentic most, such that, the media house rivalry starts and ends on these two channels only.

This rivalry between these two media giants is basically being fought on three fronts currently; the first one, as many would have already guessed, is ‘News’. Thanks to this ‘news’ that the names ARY and GEO are known to most men in Pakistan. The second front is ‘Drama’, now if there are infinity reasons in the world for couple fights, the feud between control over television remote is one of them, but in Pakistan, almost every fight and divide has a fight and divide within itself too, thus, our women not only have to fight on their ‘remote’ rights, but when they finally have that magic stick in their hands, the mental struggle over ‘ARY or GEO Entertainment’ starts–this mental war though is getting thinner these days, all thanks to this insanely popular Turkish soap ‘Mera Sultan‘, but again, it is aired on Geo Kahani, another arm of Geo Television Networks.

The third dimension to this rivalry, which is also our subject here, is ‘Film distribution’. Now don’t be like, ‘hey, this editor guy totally forgot the music channels of these two media houses’. No, how can I really forget such a thing? It’s just that I am not convinced enough to call this mere competition-for-the-sake-of-competition scuffle between Aag and ARY Music a war. That industry is dominated by numerous small players, dividing the whole market share into different small pockets, giving everyone involved a great run for their money. So, not one-on-one exactly, but you have a complete rights to think otherwise.

Now, coming back to this film distribution part, since the days of Khuda Kay Liye, we had been convincingly thinking that the best filmmaking formula in Pakistan is first to produce a slightly good-looking film; a sociopolitical preferably, and then getting it released countrywide under the banner of Geo Films. Anything getting stamped with that banner name turned into the golden goose, making some serious money at box office.

The Geo-Pakistan film industry association mainly dates back to 2004, this was the year when Geo got associated with Shehzad Rafique directed Salakhain, the film ended up making quite an impact at local cinemas. Then came Khuda Kay Liye, this was perhaps the first time, we, the new generation saw some potential in Pakistani cinema. Followed by Ramchand Pakistani, not really making it that big at box office, but was again an impact leaving product of Pakistan film industry, then hits like, Muhabbatan Sachiyan, Virsa, Bol and most recently Chambaili. Thus, it was like, either you come under Geo films, or you are a probable flop.

ARY Films, however, hasn’t really been that big of a name for all these years, they did try their hands in this movie distribution business by releasing Javed Sheikh’s Khulay Aasman Kay Neechey in 2008, but failed miserably. Since then, it felt like as if they stopped considering this business part of their league.

But more recently, the brand has sort of revived itself, a possibly new management, a great looking new logo, more and more distribution deals, and what not, all of this definitely ringing a danger alarm for Geo. The news of Iram Parveen’s Josh releasing under banner of ARY Films sure came as a pleasant surprise, we thought ‘okay, finally they are trying their luck again.’ But this got more and more serious with time, right after the Josh news, we heard of ARY Films securing a deal with Humayun Saeed for Main Hoon Shahid Afridi, taking it all away from the jaws of Geo Films, and finally giving the movie a successful cinema release in Pakistan. But this just wouldn’t stop here, it was never supposed to, in fact, this was all followed by a much bigger shocker, the one that we got after seeing Waar too falling into the hands of ARY. Through that particular act, ARY had made its message clear, “WE ARE BACK!… Oh, and we mean some serious business this time”.

Things seem to have cool down for a while after Main Hoon Shahid Afridi, but that’s mainly because it’s no more Eid, after all, ARY films is done delivering its message, and they did it quite well. However, let us assure you, this momentarily silence is not just that simple. From the face of it, it looks like as if Geo for the time being is only focusing on international releases, and that they are too occupied to give local films any heed. But, ahaan, that’s not how ARY-Geo rivalry works. We reckon an ongoing proxy war, a war being fought silently between the two bigwigs on possibly securing some deal with any upcoming big local film, there are many coming in next ten to twelve months, just give it a little thought. Leave Zinda Bhaag and Waar and start counting it from Tamanna, the film may release in fall 2013, succeeded by Operation-021 in the line, possibly releasing in early 2014, then comes the next big sociopolitical Shoaib Mansoor film on India-Pakistan issue, followed by this awesome looking film named Moor, by Jami, and the list just goes on. Thus, too many possible battle grounds.

But the question that’s far more significant and interesting is that who strikes next? And more importantly, through which film? Here it becomes a little tricky to guess. Even if we give the ‘film part’ our best shot, we can only say it’s going to be one of the early ones. The reason why it came as a guess is because of the fact that there are certain films having their release dates due, they need to hit cinemas somewhere in next three to four months, and these distribution deals in Pakistan are usually worked out in this particular stage of a film. Thus, the fight could be on another Eid release for this year, or maybe something even bigger.

Now who really strikes next, only time can tell. But don’t expect either Geo or ARY to play it soft. They are struggling, one for recognition and one to regain its place. But be sure of it, it is all going to be highly interesting and quite healthy for the film culture in Pakistan.

Main Hoon Shahid Afridi (Review) : This soon to be blockbuster film is another feather in Humayun Saeed’s cap says Momin Ali Munshi.

cover-mhsa

“Afridi, Afridi,Afridi…” chanted the crowd as the last few seconds of the film played and Shahid Afridi made his grand silver screen debut. Whistles, cheering and a thunderous applause is what followed as the credits were rolling. This is what happened on Thursday at Lahore’s Sozo World Cinema where a paid preview of this eagerly awaited film took place. Leaving the cinema halls, people could not stop raving about the film they had just seen and to be honest I could not agree more. ‘Main Hoon Shahid Afridi, a film which gave the common man
