Depressing times for film fraternity

It`s been a depressing month for the film fraternity as one of the popular names of Pakistani cinema, Chakori, passed away. Many in the industry were already worried about Shamim Ara who`s been in coma for the last couple of days.

Shamim Ara, with histrionic skills and fairly impressive direction, has a great contribution to the film industry. She was the most celebrated heroine of 1960`s as she performed in a number of films.

Indian films corrupting Pakistani youth: MNAs

As if almost seeking a ban, members of the National Assembly (MNAs) on Wednesday warned the speaker that Indian films which had flooded the markets were corrupting the minds of the younger generation.

“Children are now incorporating Indian words and terminologies in normal conversation,” complained MNA Tahira Aurangzeb who asked Culture Minister Pir Aftab Hussain Shah Jilani if Pakistani films also stole limelight in Indian markets. The members also objected to illegal foreign films overflowing the markets.

I predict ‘Karachi’, “The next Film hub of Pakistan”: Syed Noor

When one thinks of Pakistani cinema what is the first thing that comes to mind? On a funny note Meera perhaps, but when you seriously think of Pakistani cinema the only person who has tirelessly dedicated his life to local cinema, no matter in what way is none other then Syed Noor. Not very well-known amongst the ABCD classes, Noor is the last enduring iconic director, who at a time of cinematic desolation has carried on churning out hits like Sargam, Choorian and Majajan. He also has seriously hilarious works like Jungle Queen and Woti to his credit. And now, long after the release of Bollywood films has cast a shadow over the faintly flickering star of Lollywood, Noor refuses to take a back seat.

He recently came to Karachi for just one day to attend a session of informal

Lollywood – Bollywood… the never ending bond

Bollywood and Lollywood have shared a very long history together, in fact both were one before partition and now can be considered as the two different branches of 1 tree.

Though Lollywood is facing its low time currently while Bollywood is touching sky nowadays but they really have got a never-ending bond.

Here are some well-known or maybe not so well-known personalities from Lollywood and Bollywood who are/were related to each other either through blood or marriage.

Film “Saltanat”. An overlook

Saltanat is an upcoming Urdu movie by director “Syed Faisal Bukhari”, who has recently directed a movie called “Bhai Log”, which is in pipeline to be released soon.

Movie story is based on the underworld life, it’s important to mention here that his recently completed movie “Bhai Log”  is also based on the same topic, “underworld life and its consequences”. It seems like Syed Faisal Bukhari is in love with these kind of

Slackistan: Welcome to Pakistan

It has already been described as the anti-Slumdog movie, the first feature of its kind from Pakistan and one of the most unexpected and surprising films this year.

At the world premiere in London earlier this month, during the Raindance film festival, tickets for Slackistan sold out. At the Abu Dhabi Film Festival last week, seats were once again unavailable to those who have left it too late. The 85-minute low-budget film and its director Hammad Khan will then fly to New York for the South Asian film festival on October 30 and take a trip to the West Coast for the November 5 San Fransisco South Asian Film Festival.Slackistan will also be the only Pakistani movie to show at the oldest, largest film festival in India, the 41st International Film Festival of India.

There is one country, however, that has shown little interest in picking up the film for distribution — Pakistan.

Film and TV actress Noor, following her separation from her Hindu husband, is once again in hot waters, as conflicts with her new husband of four months, producer/director Farooq Mengal, have started surfacing.

The world including India loves Pakistan’s brave new cinema

Pakistan’s mainstream film industry, better known as Lollywood, may have fallen on hard times. But in recent years, an exciting bunch of offbeat movies by independent filmmakers has been showcased across the world. These films aren’t regular Lollywood ‘masala’. Director Shoaib Mansoor’s internationally acclaimed Khuda Kay Liye (2007) depicted the plight of Muslims in post-9 /11 US, and also showed how liberal-minded Pakistani youths were brainwashed by radical clerics. Zibahkhana (2007), literally

Five-screen cinema in Islamabad: CDA-Cinepax joint venture in doldrums

The project of Cinepax in the federal capital, a joint venture between Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the Cinepax for establishing a five-screen cinema with a setup of food courts, shopping mall and health club, is in doldrums, an official of Cinepax told media.

He said the construction of the basic structure of the cinema was started on 10 acres of land, but the law and order situation in the federal capital paused the construction after the investors expressed their reservations over the project.
