Ye Dil Mera: Is It Worth The Hype?

Ye Dil Mera

The first episode of Hum TV’s Ye Dil Mera aired last night. The hype surrounding the show had been unreal ever since Ahad Raza Mir, in an interview, talked about a “dark, thrilling” character that he will be portraying in the (then untitled) serial, which will revolve around a story of revenge and hate. With top-billed director Ahson Talish calling the shots and Farhat Ishtiaq penning the script, the buzz surrounding the Ahad Raza Mir and Sajal Ali starrer was massive.

When the serial’s first episode premiered last night, the #Sahad fandom did not disappoint as Yeh Dil Mera trended among the top five hashtags on twitter. Now, the question remains, was it all worth all the hype? Read on to find out…

The opening shot

Ahad plays Amaan, a young shrewd man who runs his own successful business. Sajal plays Noor ul Ain, a bubbly girl who has trouble sleeping due to some past traumas which are yet unknown. The play’s third lead, Adnan Siddiqui meanwhile plays Agha Jaan, Sajal’s overprotective father who seems to be a very dangerous man with a dark history of his own.

yeh dil meraThe episode starts with, what I presume was a flashback of a woman getting shot by the police while attempting to flee. All the three main characters introduced to us seem to have an underlying darkness to them with their own backstories and personal traumas which will most definitely unfold as the show’s plot develops further. The edginess is something that is rarely witnessed in Hum TV dramas and is indeed a welcome change.

A fresh take

As someone who found recent television serials to be repetitive and muddled with predictable and clichéd plotlines, I was rather disenchanted with them. So intriguing and coercing a viewer like myself was no small task and credit has to be given to the show’s slick trailers that had my interest piqued.

This serial with its first episode showcased content that is gripping, engaging and keeps the viewer intrigued about what is to follow. The show has the novelty of #Sahad returning together on screens and then it has been shot in Islamabad which is not a typical location for most shows. The hilly, sylvan locales only build into the edgy atmosphere of the show. The dialogues by writer Farhat Ishtiaq also seem to capture the essence of the storyline and its enigmatic characters rather well.

On the acting front, the performances have been largely praiseworthy, especially Ahad’s whom I felt was channeling his work as a theatre actor. His portions during the final scenes of the episode were rather impressive.

The opening episode poses enough riddles to keep the viewer hooked, riddles which will likely be unraveled as the show progresses. For starters, how does Amaan know such minute details about Noor ul Ain? And then why does Noor have all those nightmares? Is someone actually following her, or is it merely her imagination? Noor’s father also seems to be overly concerned about her safety and well-being. We cannot wait to have all these questions answered!
