‘Cake’ is finally coming to Netflix this month so get your subscriptions in order

Cake – a 2018 Paksiatni comedy-drama film – has had us captivated for a long time. It began with us writing a whole piece, asking a rather important question; ‘Do Pakistani Cinemas Need Films Like Cake?’ which was, to be honest, just about the current state of Pakistani Cinema, its future, and a dire need for commercial films. We asked if it was the right time for a film like Cake to come out. Then the movie came out and we were all awestruck. You can read our review here.

What is Cake about?

Cake is the story of a dysfunctional family where we have Zareen (Aamina Sheikh) solely taking on the responsibility of caring for her sick whimsical parents (Mohammad Ahmed and Beo Raana Zafar) while siblings Zara (Sanam Saed) and Zain (Faris Khalid) have moved abroad. A serious trip to the hospital brings back the entire family together in Karachi, but things are far from hunky dory as accusations are hurled, secrets from the past brought out into the open, which is followed by a whole lot of drama.

Moving on, it is also imperative to note here that Cake has been a huge win for Pakistani Cinema and definitely a benchmark, not exactly a game changer as such but a milestone film indeed. Barring a few issues with editing and slight pacing issues, this is one film which has set the standard for what a great film should look like.

Cake coming to Netflix on May 15

Well, to all the Cake lovers, we have good news. The film’s director, Asim Abbasi, announced yesterday that the film is coming to Netflix in less than 15 days, in a rather cheeky post.

Looks like the wait is finally over and we’ll now be able to enjoy the much-praised film on our laptop and phone screens.

Other Pakistani films to look out for, on Netflix, Iflix etc.

While Cake will be making its way to Netflix in less than 15 days, we want to let you guys know that Pinky Memsaab and Allahyar and the Legend of Markhor were recently added to the streaming giant too. Apart from the recently added films, the following can be found on Netflix, as well: Rangreza, Moor, Janaan, Balu Mahi, 021, Ho Mann Jahan, Waar, Wrong No., Dukhtar, and Na Maloom Afraad.

As for Iflix, the acclaimed film Motorcycle Girl was recently added to the website. Cherry on top, there is another website called vidly.tv where you can find Load Wedding and Yalghaar recently added too. Looks like we have your weekends sorted, at least for this month. Instead of paying my dues, he filed a case against me: Ali Zafar on Jami

The development in the Ali Zafar-Meesha Shafi controversy keeps happening at a rapid speed. With both parties no longer refraining from commenting on the issue directly, new things keep coming out in the public. Yesterday, when Meesha Shafi made her first media appearance to tell her side of the story, Ali Zafar made another appearance on tv alongside his wife, this time coming on Khara Sach with Mubashir Luqman.

Yesterday we had reported about Ali Zafar accusing Jami Mehmood of having a vendetta against Ali because of Ali being more successful than Jami. As the conversation flew between Mubashir Luqman and Ali Zafar, Ali once again got the chance to talk about Jami.

Ali Zafar on Jami

The topic was brought up by Mubashir Luqman who insinuated that Jami owed Ali Zafar some unpaid dues from back when they had worked together. He said that when Ali Zafar had asked about those dues, Jami had turned against him and that is the reason why Jami is being so vocally against Ali.

Ali Zafar reiterated that Jami has a tendency of attacking people behind their back. Recalling an incident from 2004, Ali talked about the time when he had shot for a commercial directed by Jami. He said that Jami had approached him and asked for the favor as “a friend”. Ali said that he did the commercial but wasn’t paid for it. And when  Ali had threatened to file a case against Jami for regarding those unpaid dues, Jami had phoned him and assured him that those dues would be clear soon.

“He said that I would be paid by Monday. But on Monday, he filed a case against me!” said Ali Zafar.

Ali continued that the case went on for ten years and ultimately the decision was ruled in Ali’s favor.

No response from Jami as of yet on the fresh allegations

We reached out to Jami to get his side of the story but he remained unavailable. While we wait for his comments on these fresh allegations, Jami did reply to the story we did yesterday.

Addressing Ali Zafar’s claims that Jami was being so anti-him due to Teefa in Trouble being a successful film, Jami posted a link to a promotional video that he had shot for TnT back in February 2018. Rubbishing Ali’s claims, Jami commented that Teefa wasn’t a hit when he had specially shot that little teaser and that he had done it as a sign of goodwill. But once the accusations had come out, Jami had distanced himself from both Ali Zafar and his film.

“There is one thing and that is that I trust the survivor’s side. Like [Ali Zafar] said, I had gone through it and I didn’t have the guts to open up about it like these women who are coming out. One day I will. But now I will stand by our women and their story.”

Jami further commented that he would not attack Ali Zafar personally and that he has distanced himself from him. He said that this isn’t the time for Ali Zafar to attack the #MeToo movement by creating unnecessary hype on the media and attacking the roots of the movement in Pakistan. He emphasized the importance of supporting the women who are gathering the courage to come out with their stories now.

Jami has surely taken a dignified stand against Ali Zafar’s accusations. Let’s see how he reacts to the other allegations that Ali Zafar has put on Jami. Keep watching this space for all the developments.

Here is everything Meesha Shafi revealed in her first interview, post harassment allegations

The Meesha Shafi – Ali Zafar controversy has reached new heights, with both of them making media appearances for the first time, after almost a year of the beginning of the whole thing.

In the past two weeks, a number of things have happened. Firstly, a colossal number of women and brands chose to withdraw their LSA nominations by stating Ali Zafar’s nomination as a reason behind their withdrawal. This was followed by Ali Zafar speaking to media, in front of a courtroom in Lahore and then making three consecutive appearances in three different television shows. He challenged Meesha Shafi to come in front of the media and a court and tell her side of the story.

Meesha Shafi’s first television interview, post harassment allegations

In the aftermath of Ali’s interviews and crying episodes, Meesha’s legal team finally responded, yesterday. Here is the full post from her lawyer, Nighat Dad.

Following the statement, Meesha appeared on a programme at Geo News titled Aaj Shahzaib Khanzada key Sath,  a day after Ali Zafar appeared on the same channel. Here is a summary of everything that she revealed on the show.

Communication prior to going public

Meesha began by telling Shahzaib that she never wished to go public with the whole thing, to begin with. She had tried communicating her concerns to Ali Zafar through his representative and had a long meeting with him but nothing really became of it. Although, it is important to note that the representative did ask Meesha if an apology from Ali Zafar would work (which insinuates that Ali Zafar did think that he was guilty). Meesha even told the same representative that she could think about accepting an apology but according to her, it never came and when everything failed, she had to go public with her allegations for she realized that it was about time that she thought about herself too.

While answering the questions about why she performed with Ali after the incident happened, Meesha said that it was a part of her contract and that the organizers had requested her to do that. She further clarified that the message she sent in the WhatsApp group for the same concert was just her trying to “exit a professional affiliation cordially” and that’s exactly why she thanked Ali too.

Moreover, Meesha clarified that one of her ex-managers who accused her of employing blackmail to get things done was actually super unprofessional during the brief time period he worked with her. She did send him an angry message in her frustration so it is important to understand the context of it all.

A final word

Upon being asked if she would like to resolve the issue, out of court as per Ali’s offer, Meesha said that she doesn’t even understand what he is offering. When she does, she may consider it. Meesha also said that instead of putting all the pressure on her to provide and produce evidence, our legal system should do a better job and that she is not the only one who has spoken up against Ali Zafar, there have been several other victims too.

Box Office: Avengers takes an earth shattering start in Pakistan, creates new records!

It came and it conquered.

The phrase holds true for the latest Marvel film Avengers: Endgame which has been creating new records worldwide ever since it released this Friday and why not, for the film is the culmination of eleven years and more than twenty films, making it one of the most eagerly awaited releases of the year. The film released on Friday and the last three days have seen the biggest weekend in the history of cinema and box office rules have been rewritten everywhere.

Pakistani Box Office on Fire

Just like everywhere else Pakistan has seen huge numbers and the film has created records which seem like no film will be able to break in the foreseeable future. The film opened on Friday with 4.5 crores which broke Sultan’s first-day record of 3.4 crores by a margin. On the second day, the film raked in a whopping 5.5 crore which is a number, not even trade experts were predicting. Just so you know, Sultan had raked in 4.08 crore on its second day!

While the third-day numbers aren’t officially out as of yet it would not be wrong to assume and make an educated guess that the third-day numbers would also be in the region of 4-6 crores given the hysteria at the box office. ( UPDATE: The actual number has come out and its 4 crores). The film is playing to packed houses all over the country be it multiplexes or single screens and has created a ruckus at the box office. This one video from Capri Cinema Karachi perfectly captures this madness.

Anyhow, the three days opening weekend at the Pakistani box office is about 15 crore ( Actual number is 14 crores) which is a HUGE Number. To give you better context, previously the record for the highest weekend at the Pakistani box office was held by Sultan with 11.25 crores, followed by Sanju with 10.25 crores. As for local films, the highest three-day record is under Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2’s belt which released on Eid and collected 9.92 crores in the first three days, so yeah!

This unimaginable success of the film sheds light on another fact that given a film has solid content and is well-marketed any release date will work like magic and the reliance on holidays to boost box office isn’t that important. Moreover, the film was released without a dubbed version which if it had would have further bolstered the numbers.

Worldwide Numbers

As for worldwide numbers, the film has had a record-breaking opening weekend of $1.2 billion which no one had predicted and it seems like the lifetime records of many films will be shattered. An all-time record has been created in the U.S with a $350 million weekend, China added to the numbers with $330 million collections in the first 5 days and India has added INR 157 crores in its first three days.

To sum it up, Avengers is a landmark film in the history of cinema and seems like these records will stay intact for a long time because given the slate of upcoming films no film seems to have the potential for such crazy numbers. From what we have heard the film is holding well on Monday, and given the holiday on Wednesday the film will close week one with huge numbers, let’s wait and watch.

“Jami tends to go against anyone who is more successful than him,” says Ali Zafar

The drama just keeps on escalating. The Ali Zafar-Meesha Shafi controversy has taken a new turn with Ali Zafar taking the issue to the media after a year of being silent about it. From giving statements in a press conference in front of a court-room to breaking down during a live transmission on national TV, and now appearing alongside his wife on a morning show, Ali is making up for all the lost time by making sure his side of the story is heard.

And now that Ali Zafar is finally speaking, he isn’t just talking about Meesha Shafi. During his appearance on ARY News show Bakhabar Sawera, Ali had something to say about the director – Jami Mehmood.

The Ali Zafar – Jami Mehmood fiasco

Jami has been the most vocal supporter of Meesha Shafi ever since this whole case started. He has taken several steps to show his solidarity with the harassment victims like refusing to work with any person who has been accused of harassment. Most recently, his protest against the Lux Style Awards, where he kept the LSA trophy that he has won on the road outside his house, gained him much attention from the industry.

During the show, Ali Zafar was asked by the host what he felt about Jami’s involvement in this whole controversy, especially considering how Ali and Jami had shared a professional work relationship in the past. Ali replied by saying that he had heard Jami had been “a victim of an incident a few years ago which had led to him having such antagonistic feelings in his heart.” Ali said that he felt “sorry” for him and said he didn’t want to comment more on the hearsay.

Ali then went on to say that Jami has the tendency of going against anyone more successful than him.

“[Jami’s] film didn’t work and mine was a success and that has led him to be so anti-me. And it’s not just me. He tends to go against anyone who is more successful than him.”

Ali also recalled an incident from years ago when Jami had requested Ali for help and hired him for a commercial when the actor, he had originally signed for it, had become unavailable at the very last minute.

“By no means do I ever want to disrespect a gender,” Yasir Hussain responds to the backlash

Renowned actor, comedian, and host, Yasir Hussain’s telefilm Help me Durdana is all set to release on Eid this year. The actor most well-known for his role in the Karachi Se Lahore film franchise is now in the midst of extreme social media backlash for some insensitive comments regarding the transgender community, that he recently made. 

What started it?

A few days ago, Yasir posted a picture for his 714k Instagram followers, where he was dressed in feminine attire, captioned “Help me Durdana … coming soon on ARY digital.”

Many people including myself thought that he was all set and ready to play a transgender character. Seeing that, many people got offended over the fact that why wasn’t a transgender given a chance to play a transgender character? But that’s not all, with some people starting to question Yasir, things got a bit out of hand when Yasir gave some questionable clap backs.

With one guy asking “Why don’t you guys hire ACTUAL transgenders?” and Yasir responding with “matlab apko job chahiye?”, the whole thing started to get out of control. 

Not the first time, though

When it comes to controversies and edgy jokes being blown out of proportions, Yasir is no newcomer. Just two years ago at the 5th annual Hum Awards, Yasir, who was hosting, while referring to Ahsan Khan (who had just played a child molester in the tv serial Udaari) said “itna khoobsurat child molester, kaash mein bhi bacha hota”

YIKES! Anyway, Yasir gave a couple more similar clap backs which were followed by a heavy social media backlash. 

Yasir’s clarification

Although the damage had been done, Yasir tried to clarify in yet another post on Instagram yesterday that he is not playing a transgender character. His character in the telefilm will have to play his own mother for some reason which we’ve yet to see when it comes out.

To put it in Yasir’s own words, “I just wanted to clear the misconceptions that some people have about my recent role. The images that you have seen over social media of me wearing a Saree are for a project in which I am playing the role of my mother. I am not playing the role of a transgender and by no means do I ever want to disrespect a gender that I have immense regard for.”

Yasir further mentioned that when the show is out, the audiences will be able to “understand the character better and will know that my role has nothing to do with humiliating or mocking anyone.”

“We as public figures receive a lot of retaliation/negative comments and just because I chose to reply to a comment with a joke does not in any way mean that I have no respect for a certain gender. Other negative comments that we receive are never made a controversy out of so this also shouldn’t be. It is just a character intended for humor and nothing else,” Yasir further added.

Even after the clarification, people were mad at him for not apologizing. Some are saying that his insensitive and rude replies are the main reason for the backlash and that he should apologize. One thing that’s imperative to note here is that many male actors have played transgender in the past. Imran Ashraf, very recently, is playing one in Alif Allah Aur Insaan yet there was nothing for him but well-deserved praise.

Meesha Shafi – Ali Zafar controversy, it looks like, is here to stay. In case you want to catch up on the details, we have done a number of detailed articles on the whole thing that can be accessed here, and here.

Some background on the controversy

Last Saturday, Ali Zafar talked to media, for the first time. While talking to the same, he said, “A campaign was running against me on social media based on lies through fake accounts, we’ve complained to FIA to investigate it as it falls under cyber crime and bullying. I’m saddened by the fact that her allies and even one of her lawyers are following these fake accounts and endorsing them.”

Following his appearance on media, Ali gave an interview to GEO TV, where he broke down in tears and requested Meesha Shafi to end the fiasco. You can access the interview here.

Moving on, Ali and his wife Ayesha Fazli who has mostly remained silent throughout the entirety of the case appeared together on ARY News’ morning show, Bekhabar Savera, earlier today. During the interview, Ayesha said she will never be able to forgive the perpetrators, on account of the trauma she and her family had to go through in the past year.

Towards the end of the morning show, Ali Zafar challenged Meesha Shafi to come in front of the media and a court and tell her side of the story. Let’s just wait and see how the situation unfolds now.

Meesha’s legal team responds

In the aftermath of Ali’s interviews and crying episodes, Meesha’s legal team has finally responded.

The statement claims that “no court nor forum has exonerated Ali Zafar.” It further states the reason as to why Meesha’s first case was dismissed and how it can very well come back, in the High Court soon.

As per the statement, “Meesha Shafi filed a case for sexual harassment at the workplace against Ali Zafar before the relevant ombudsperson for sexual harassment at Lahore. The ombudsperson did not hear the case on merits and dismissed it on technical grounds stating that Meesha was not an employee. This order is currently challenged before the Lahore High Court, where emerging jurisprudence gives Meesha Shafi a high chance of success in having the case returned to the ombudsperson so it may finally be heard on merits, and for Ali Zafar be held accountable. No court nor forum has exonerated him.”

The statement also responds to Ali Zafar’s accusations that Meesha has run off to Canada and has thus, played a role in delaying justice.

“In the defamation case, Meesha is represented by her lawyers who are defending her and are fully participating in the court proceedings on her behalf. Meesha personally has no obligation to attend court unless she is summoned,” says the statement.

Towards the end, it also addresses Ali’s latest remarks about Meesha trying to be Malala in the following words: “His insinuation that Meesha wants to get recognition like Malala is equally condemnable as it appears that Ali Zafar believes that Malala made up a false story to get fame and immigration of a foreign country. Malala – the world’s youngest Nobel laureate and Pakistan’s pride is an inspiration to millions of young girls, women and men across the world and it is shameful what Ali Zafar thinks about her.”

Guess what, there may just be another film coming out on Eid-ul-Fitr 2019!

With Ramazan just around the corner, Lollywood is gearing up for Eid-ul-Fitr releases with considerable zeal. With Chhalawa and Wrong No. 2 confirming their release this coming Eid, there are two other movies; The Legend of Maula Jatt and Baaji, that might or might not come out on the Eid too.

As for the former, the rumors have been going around that the film may have to delay its release from Eid-ul-Fitr to a later date. While the producers and the officials associated with the film are completely silent about it, sources close to Galaxy Lollywood have revealed that the film is currently stuck with some legal issues and until they’re resolved, the film will not have a confirmed release date.

So, If Maula Jatt‘s release gets delayed, there will be some space for another movie to come out, in its place. The latest buzz in the trade circles is that Saqib Malik’s directorial debut Baaji might take its place and be preponed from 28th of June to the Eid-ul-Fitr because honestly, why not? It can benefit from the Eid crowds too and by now, most of you are also aware of the fact that Eid has always been a popular choice for a number of films.

Veteran director Sangeeta’s new film Sirf Tum Hi To Ho to release on Eid too?

While we sit here and wait for the situation to unfold, here is something for y’all in the meanwhile. Just yesterday, another trailer of a Pakistani film was dropped in a WhatsApp group which had “Eid-Ul-Fitr 2019″ as its release date. Here is what we know:

Lollywood’s veteran director Sangeeta made Tum Hi To Ho – a romantic drama film – in the year 2016 and was all set to release it in a grand way. Starring Danish Taimoor, Qurat-ul-Ain (Annie) and Mathira in the lead roles, the film initially had the backing of GEO Films. Later on, however, Geo Films backed out from its media partnership.

Furthermore, the trailer of the film was released somewhere in 2016 but unfortunately, the film couldn’t release back then. It was supposed to come in July 2016 except that it didn’t. It was then set to release in December of the same year but that didn’t happen either. In 2017, Sangeeta revealed that she was having trouble with her film’s distributor.

Now after a delay of almost 2 years, a rehashed trailer of the film titled as Sirf Tum Hi To Ho was shared in a WhatsApp group, announcing that the film will be releasing on Eid. We decided to contact Sangeeta to confirm this news, to which she responded that the release date of the film has not been finalized yet and the trailer has not been officially released. She further said that her team will be finalizing the release date of the film in a few days and they will then share it with the media.

Well, we hope that the veteran director’s Sangeeta’s directorial comeback on the silver screen is received with love and appreciation by the audience. We have our fingers crossed.

“Meesha has lied repeatedly,” says Ali Zafar in his first television interview with wife Ayesha

The infamous Ali Zafar and Meesha Shafi controversy has been going on for almost a year now. It has been haunting the industry for a while and with the recent LSA episode, the attention it is receiving has only increased. A number of LSA nominees withdrew their nominations by saying that they did not want to share the platform with an alleged harasser.

This is what Meesha Shafi shared, on her Twitter account:

LSAs released an official statement in the aftermath of all the backlash and withdrawn nominations, that mentioned that the awards had their full faith in the Pakistani judicial system and that they were certain that justice would prevail.

 

Meesha’s case dismissal and Ali Zafar speaking to the media for the first time

While Meesha and her lawyer/supporters were rather vocal on social media, Ali Zafar remained silent for the most part until last Saturday, when he chose to speak with the media after a whole year, in front of a court-room.

While talking to the media, Ali said, “A campaign was running against me on social media based on lies through fake accounts, we’ve complained to FIA to investigate it as it falls under cyber crime and bullying. I’m saddened by the fact that her allies and even one of her lawyers are following these fake accounts and endorsing them.”

“It’s been over a year, I’ve filed a defamation case. Meesha’s case has been dismissed, in the eyes of the law, I’m already innocent. This is a very important fact, her appeal has also been dismissed. My case is for the psychological and financial damages she’s incurred to me and my family. Our witnesses have come to the court eight times but they use delaying tactics to prolong the case. I appeal to our courts to give a judgment as soon as possible so that the world knows my truth and her lies. I’m thankful that the process has started today, her lawyer has started cross-examination. I request Meesha and her witnesses to come to the court and face the court,” Ali further said.

Later that day, Ali’s wife – Ayesha Fazli – took to Twitter to let out her anger about the whole situation. Here’s what she said:

During the interview, Ali said that several big companies who have hired the singer for any kind of business were tagged in social media posts by Meesha, along with the United Nations’ agencies, so that his career can be ended.

Ali told the hosts that the reason he broke down during his earlier interview was because he hadn’t slept in two days as he was working on some new project and also because this was a year’s worth of pent-up emotions that were finally coming out. Ali’s wife Ayesha further said that she had to explain the whole situation to her 9-year-old son because he could see people coming and going to their house and Meesha’s name being uttered every now and then. She said she will never be able to forgive the perpetrators, on account of the trauma she and her family had to go through in the past year.

Moving on, Ali and his wife went on to talk about a particular account called ‘Neha Saigol’ that was created some 50 days before Meesha accused him of harassment. The account is followed by Meesha’s lawyer, her mother, etc. Ali addressed Nighat Dad directly and asked her how she feels about the cyberbullying his wife and the woman of his family have had to face on a daily basis, given that Nighat Dad is a digital rights activist herself.

Ayesha mentioned that she and Meesha had been friends for a long time and she can’t understand why she took to Twitter instead of coming to her if anything like that ever happened. Ali Zafar also talked about how Meesha’s allegations were perfectly timed to ruin his career and upcoming projects.

Towards the end of the morning show, Ali Zafar challenged Meesha Shafi to come in front of the media and a court and tell her side of the story. Let’s just wait and see how the situation unfolds now.

Box Office: ‘Avengers: Endgame’ shatters all records in Pakistan

The day the whole cinematic world had been waiting for arrived yesterday, with Avengers: Endgame‘s release. The film not only shattered records everywhere but is also setting benchmarks for all to follow. Endgame as a film is super impressive (and super emotional) and from what things are looking, it will definitely enjoy a clear winning run.

Avengers: Endgame shatters all records in Pakistan

After coming to Pakistan, the film – since yesterday- has been shattering records in different territories. For starters, the film created a record in the Rawalpindi/Islamabad region by collecting 72 lacs on Friday. Second, the Karachi sector went up to 1.4 crores, beating all previous records. The film overall broke all existing opening records as it collected a huge 4.5 crores, defeating the opening record of Sultan i.e. 3.4 crores. Had the Urdu dubbed version of the film released here,the collection in Lahore would have been even more.

It is worth mentioning that the highest opening day number for a Pakistani release is under Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2’s belt which recorded a 2.9 crore Day 1.

Here are the top 5 openers at the Pakistani box office:

1.Avengers Endgame: 4.5 crore

If we go territory wise, the film released in China first and created an unprecedented record for Hollywood movies, with 107.2 million, beating China’s homegrown product Monster Hunt 2. The film further broke opening records in the following countries: Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Australia, Newzeland, the Philippines, Korea, the U.K., Brazil, Egypt, Panama, Peru, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, Trinidad, and Uraguay. It also registered opening day records in Indonesia, Malaysia, Netherlands, Greece, Portugal, Slovakia, Turkey, and Ukraine.

In the U.S territory, the film has broken the Thursday preview record of Star Wars by collecting a whopping 60 million. The film is looking to collect a 157million on Friday (including previews). Avengers most probably will collect a total of approximately 349 million over the weekend, which is unheard of.

In our neighboring country, the film registered a bombastic opening with collections going over 53.10 crores, beating the opening day collections of Aamir Khan starrer Thugs of Hindustan. The film released on approximately 2845 screens and has achieved an amazingly high occupancy level which no other film had until now. The film looks poised for one of the biggest 3 days in India.
