Day 8 and 9 Box Office : Both ‘Wrong Number’ and ‘Bin Roye’ have bigger second weekends.

We cannot vouch for the authenticity of these box office numbers given by independent box office tracking sites. While we had the official numbers from ARY Films for ‘Wrong Number’  for the first few days now we do not have the numbers for either ‘Wrong Number’ or Roye’. So until the official numbers come from the makers themselves or until we have some official box-office tracking system in Pakistan this is all we have got.

It was surely a clash of the titans as two big budget films were releasing on the very same day. Both the films had stars attached to them and the promotion/marketing for the films was a success as the buzz around them both was worth seeing. But what happens at the box-office window, well nobody can really predict. People thought that the Mahira Khan starrer would emerge as the clear winner given her recent escapades in Bollywood, but well the box office has a different story to tell.

It was evident from the first day itself that Wrong Number would be leading this box-office battle as it had registered huge numbers for the first day. Moreover it also managed to maintain those numbers as the days passed. A week after the release one could safely say that ‘Wrong Number’ not only won this war but had generally established itself as a ‘hit film’. Specially since it was holding up exceptionally well after the Eid holidays which proved that the film was being liked by the audiences and that the word of mouth was positive. However the biggest magic trick the film pulled was when it had a bigger second weekend as compared to its initial release. The international norm is that the second week sees a fall in the collections. But ‘Wrong Number’ not only maintained the collections rather it improved on them! It has already crossed the 7cr mark and with these numbers it’s sure to cross the 10 cr mark. It’s worth mentoring that except ‘Waar’ , ‘Na Maloom Afraad’, ‘Bol’ and Chooriyan’ no Pakistani film has ever crossed the 10 cr mark so it’s a huge achievement.

Moreover ‘Bin Roye’ also is a winner in the sense that is has recorded good numbers at the box office. After a somewhat slow start the film picked up on day two and three and its due to this growth that the film had managed a strong first week. Moreover Bin Roye also held really well despite the fact that the Eid festivities had ended. Moreover even ‘Bin Roye’ improved on its first week figures and shows a growth. Well the film has crossed the 5 cr mark at the domestic box office and once you add the numbers from the international markets this film has huge number. ( We will be doing a post on the Bin Roye international box office soon)

Here is the day to day breakdown for both the films.

We did ask some cinema people for their opinion and they maintained the same stance that both films are doing well but they did mention that ‘Wrong Number’ has been doing well. Well let’s see what the next few days have in store for both the films.

Day 7 Box Office: The second week for both ‘Wrong Number’ and ‘Bin Roye’ starts on a great note.

We cannot vouch for the authenticity of these box office numbers given by independent box office tracking sites. Specially since it is holding up exceptionally well after the Eid holidays proves that the film is being liked by the audiences and that the word of mouth is positive. Given the positive word of mouth and the numbers it registered at the box office yesterday it seems the film is going to have a strong week two.

Moroever ‘Bin Roye’ also is a winner in the sense that is has recorded good numbers at the box office. After a somewhat slow start the film picked up on day two and three and its due to this growth that the film has managed a strong first week. Moreover Bin Roye is also doing really well despite the fact that the Eid festivities have ended. Moreover the figures it had reported yesterday are better than the first day itself so expect some big numbers at the box office.

Here is the day to day breakdown for both the films:-

A quick chat with the sensational ‘Tooti Frooti’ girl Ayesha Omar

Although the Eid madness is over and the Wrong Number-Bin Roye release is a thing of the past, Pakistani Cinema still has lots to offer. The film slate for 2015 is full of some very promising films which are sure to grab your attention and give you a dose of entertainment. And the first film post Eid that is going to make sure you fall in love with Pakistani cinema is the Wajahat Rauf’s road trip comedy ‘Karachi Se Lahore’. The film released its first trailer a few months back and became the hottest topic of discussion courtesy it’s very fresh feel, comic nature and of course the sizzling video featuring Ayesha Omar.

Now that there are about seven days left for the release of the film we decided to talk to the sensational ‘Tooti Frooti’ herself and ask her what the film is all about and what should we be excepting. So here is a brief candid chat with the ‘Khoobsorat’ girl of television who is all set to make her film debut later this month when her eagerly awaited film ‘Karachi Se Lahore’ finally hits cinemas.

So without much ado here are excerpts from a one on one conversation with the gorgeous and talented actress Ayesha Omar.

Momin Ali Munshi: Karachi Se Lahore’s trailer got fantastic reviews by everyone. The critics and the audience alike loved the freshness the film brought with it. How does it feel to have the first trailer of your first film receiving so much love?

Ayesha Omer: It feels great to have the trailer out there. Its actually a very new experience for me. I’ve done television for quite some time and have been seeing my face on the screen but film is a completely different ballgame. You know that your face is going to be magnified on that massive screen and that people will scrutinize every detail. Your acting, your expressions, everything will be magnified. Its daunting yet very exciting.

Moreover the fact that people are loving the trailer for my first film has me really excited. We have got some really great great reviews and people are generally excited for the film. Lots of other films are coming this year and there are dozens of trailers out there, but the fact that people are talking about our trailer and are excited for our film is really great. However these expectations make me a bit nervous too as I hope that we live up to the hype.

Momin Ali Munshi: Your dance/item number however got some mixed reviews and got tongues wagging. While there were people like us who just loved the peppy number and your dance moves there was another section who labeled it as “fahaash” and what not? Your take?

Ayesha Omer: Its not really an item number. People keep asking me why and well the definition of an item number is that its done by a female actress who comes just for one ‘item’ or one ‘dance’. However I’m the lead actress of the film and am hence part of the entire film. My dance is more of a performance with the other characters of the film with me. Its all part of situation a which I can’t really reveal. We are trying to get out of the situation by donning these disguises and yeah its just that.

I know we have mixed reviews but I don’t think there is anything ‘fahaash’. Yes I am wearing a very tiny chooli and lehnga but we wear such stuff to weddings too. Yes, I am dancing in front of a sea of men but the performance is not to seduce them. Its just an art form, a performance which is required by the situation. Its not just a random number to stir things up or to create excitement. It serves a purpose!  There is a thought process that goes before you do something, and if you don’t believe in it yourself and don’t own it well, nobody will believe in it or believe in you.

Its very tough to face criticism, these negative views, these statements. But you have to develop a thick skin when you enter this business. Actors are very sensitive. I’m a woman and I’ve been raised a certain way and sometimes I feel I don’t belong in this industry as I’m not that competitive and ambitious as my colleagues. I believe in giving the best to what you do, have fun with it and believe in it and leave the rest to God.

Momin Ali Munshi: We know you lent your voice to this song . Other than that there is not much known. So any new information on the song “Tutti-Fruitti” that the audiences might find interesting?

Ayesha Omer: Yes, I also sang the song and had a great time singing it. Its a completely new genre that I have tried as a singer. Hats off to Shiraz Uppal and I must mention him here as its commendable the way he was so patient with me. The way he made me record this, we spent a lot of time in the studio. I’ve never sung like this before. People have always said that when I sing I have this certain ‘angrez accent’. But for this song the tone had to be completely different, I had to sound very desi and my pronunciation has to be very ‘mela’.

It was tough but fun. Its all Shiraz and ‘Noori the band’ (Noori and Shiraz have done the music for the film). They were there to help me, to support me, to pamper me and to lighten things up. When my mother heard it she was like what are the lyrics but then eventually she fell in love with it. The lyrics are hilarious and quite catchy. Its a really fun song.

Karachi Se Lahore Poster 2

Momin Ali Munshi: The KSL team was awfully quiet after the trailer launch back in April. The promotional activities have started but with the film all set to release in a week don’t you think the marketing/promotion should have been started earlier?

Ayesha Omer: The marketing/promotion is up to the director, the producer and the marketing people. Honestly I was after my director Wajhat to start promoting the film as I saw all other films being promoted. I was like please can we start promoting and be a little more active on social media. Its that I’m very active on Instagram and Facebook and I see that my co-stars are not even there. They are not even on Instagram. I’m like dude don’t be so laid back and become a bit active. But Wajhat had another take on it and he is right. He believed there was a lot of clutter as lots of films were coming out. He wanted to let them create their buzz, let them release and then we start promoting the film. Now that the buzz around other films has died its the right time to promote our film. Moreover its his film, his baby so I guess he has right to do what he wants.

Momin Ali Munshi: Whats next for you after  Karachi Se Lahore?

Ayesha Omer: Well there is Yalghaar which comes out after this and the role I’ve played in it is nothing like Karachi Se Lahore. Its a completely different film and well we will talk about that when you interview me next after the release of KSL. Other than these films there is going to be lots of music. I’m also going to do some shows in the US. A little bit of theater and all.

Rapid Fire: Some options. You can select on any basis, just give one answer.

-Yalghaar or Karachi Se Lahore: Both. I love both and they are both very close to me.
-Acting or Singing  : Acting for now and singing in a little while but both.
-TV or Films : Definitely films for now. There is ‘Bulbulay’ which is like my family but other than that films.
-Box-office success or Critical acclaim: This is a toughie. Critical acclaim is way more important but we need box-office success right now. Only once we get box office success will more producers come and invest. Only then will other investors come to this business and make movies. Then we will actually be able to build this industry and take it forward. So box-office success for now.
-Arranged or Love Marriage : Love Marriage for sure.
-Shaan Shahid or Humayun Saeed : Shaan for films. Humayun for TV.
-Bollywood or Hollywood : Hollywood. Actually also Bollywood. I love them both.

Why Bin Roye could have been the Devdas of Pakistan.

By: Ibrahim Qutab

The writer has just completed his twelve years of education and is applying to universities to continue his academic journey.

Note: This is not a review of the film. The review can be read HERE

‘Bin Roye’, a complete family movie with pure romance in it has won the hearts of people with its amazing filming and mesmerizing acting.

Bin Roye is undoubtly the first complete romantic film to come out ever since Pakistani cinema has revived. A film which solely focuses on love and presents it as something to be worshiped. We know that  Bin Roye is an adaption of Farhat Ishtiaq’s novel  ‘Bin Roye Ansoo’ which is just great, but the part of it which is chosen for the film or the part of it which is put in the film somewhat doesn’t give a romantic feeling. It was full of drama and it took hard for me to swallow it as a film of any other genre.

Let me clear myself on this regard that I’m not comparing Bin Roye with Bollywood’s classical Devdas but what I’m trying to tell is that with some more input and if some mistakes were not made Bin Roye could have been the film everybody remembered, like Devdas. It could have been the classical Lollywood film, it could have been the favorite of many and it could have been the film people watched over and over again. Films are not made classical but it is the response, love form the audience that makes them that and believe me numbers don’t matter here.

Walking out of the film I had only one line for everybody and that was, ‘It will be a good serial’. For me, this is the core mistake. Make a film or make a serial. Don’t make a film out of a serial. I appreciate the idea which, to my knowledge, has never been tried before but it didn’t work out. It felt like a serial was shot and parts of it were edited to make a serial. It felt like a long story was forcefully compressed to fit in the time of a film. The first half was fast, the other was a drag. Spoiler alert – I mean Irtaza (Humayun) flies to America, studies there, lives there, falls in love with Armeena and comes back to Pakistan in less than a minute. Many crucial scenes were merged and that made the first half feel like somebody fast-forwarded it. With some justice to editing a film in its true sense, I might not have noticed all this.

The dialogues were great, the acting was definitely award winning and it could be seen in that 3 minute monologue of Mahira Khan just before the interval, which I cannot forget.

I was really happy to listen the film’s album, the songs were great, all 7 of them. But I was not happy to see the frequent use of them in the film. I wanted to see the story with dialogues, I only got the story through the songs. Everything refers back to the poor deliverance of story. It was good, but not great. Or should I say as great as the filming, acting and the songs.

Some great film-makers say,all that matters in the end of a film is how good the story was and how good did they deliver it. If the story would have been perfect with such filming, MominaDuraid has set standards of filming through Bin Roye, it could have easily been the film of the decade for Pakistani Cinema.

Why Devdas? Because Bin Roye has everything Devdas had. It had romance, drama, songs, dance, family movie factor. It had forever applauding acting of some great actors with beautiful dialogues. This is why Bin Roye could have been the Devdas of Pakistan, ‘could have been’.

Day 5 Box Office: Wrong Number holds exceptionally well after the holidays while Bin Roye also puts up a strong front.

We cannot vouch for the authenticity of these box office numbers given by independent box office tracking sites. Moreover it also managed to maintain those numbers as the days passed. Now five days after the release one can safely say that ‘Wrong Number’ has not only won this war  but has generally established itself as a ‘hit film’. Specially since it is holding up exceptionally well after the Eid holidays proves that the film is being liked by the audiences and that the word of mouth is positive.

Hum Network – A Humming Tune of Growth Beyond Boundaries

By Syed Bilal Hasani

Where all the electronic media is revolving around ratings of political talk shows fueling the nation’s depression, Hum Network is actually doing the job to entertain the people and relaxing the nerves. Run by the most talented and creative management, drama production of Hum Network clearly stands out from the crowd of the entertainment segment of other entertainment channels. This Eid, they have entered into box office business again and so far, have received a warm welcome by film spectators. “Bin Roye” has impressed the viewers and critiques while carrying all the goodies we could expect from a Hum Network production. It is indeed a great beginning by Hum Network and we have some good reasons to believe that they will take film industry much more aggressively in coming days.

In Pakistan, all the media houses are privately owned and they often come under allegations of tax evasion and dubious financials. Many of the viewers may not know the fact that Hum Network has distinction of being a publically held business open for investment from local and foreign investors with transparent financials, booming turnover and lucrative prospects. In 2013 and 2014, Hum Network’s net profit showed staggering growth of 98% and 53% mainly due to the launch of new channels and production of a number of blockbuster TV serials, most notably Fawad Khan starrer “Zindagi Gulzar Hai”. Final numbers of the recently ended year are yet to come and they will certainly surpass the profits of the previous years.

In the recently ended fiscal year, Hum Network management had made some major financial decisions while continuing their growth journey. In November 2014, THS Kingsway Fund, a Luxembourg domiciled investment firm, raised its stake in Hum Network Limited from 5.85% to 21.28%. This transaction took place at time when company stock was rallying sky high due to stock split announced by the Hum Network’s management, a strategic move to increase the market float of the company. THS Kingsway Fund is not a new name in corporate circle of Pakistan. They have a history of investing in leading businesses in Pakistan, especially in companies who are expanding the business and exploring the international markets. Prime examples are National Foods and Murree Brewery which came into the fund’s radar soon after these companies decided to expand their business beyond the local boundaries. Had they similar expectations from Hum Network? Back in November 2014, it was not as clear as it is today.

The things started to pick up the pace recently when Hum Network signed a deal with Eros International and gave them rights to access HUM TV’s entire library and gives ErosNow subscribers in India an exclusive opportunity to view the content. This dealBin Roye poster tuned out to be a game changer causing an overwhelming response from the Indian viewers. After success of this step, Hum network decided to go for a big leap by announcing a worldwide release of “Bin Roye” including in Indian circuit, something no other Pakistani movie dared in recent days. To accomplish this, Hum Network collaborated with international film distributor B4U Motion Pictures. So far, the movie is capturing the attention of desi movie lovers all over the world, although its journey into the Indian circuit has been full of obstacles so far. Hopefully we might see fruitful outcomes from such collaboration when the Indo-Pak relationship would settle to a calm level.

Is that all for Hum network’s recent box office adventure? Most of the keen movie followers would already know the answer. With “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”, Hum Network has officially entered into film distribution business and the results are exceptional so far. In local circuit, “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” is currently capturing more screens than “Bin Roye” and “Wrong Number” and has proved to be a blockbuster hit here and worldwide. Hum Network could have avoided the competition between “Bin Roye” and “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” by delaying one for the sake of the other, but for them, it is still a win-win situation if viewers go for any of the two movies.

Day 4 Box Office: Wrong Number packs the most powerful punch on Day 4 and solidifies its position while Bin Roye is also holding its ground.

It was evident from the first day itself that Wrong Number would be leading this box-office battle as it had registered huge numbers for the first day. Moreover it also managed to maintain those numbers as the days passed. Now four days after the release one can safely say that ‘Wrong Number’ has not only won this war  but has generally established itself as a ‘hit film’.

Moroever ‘Bin Roye’ also is a winner in the sense that is has recorded good numbers at the box office. After a somewhat slow start the film picked up on day two and three and its  due to this growth that the film has managed a strong 4 day collection.

However now that the Eid festivities have come to an end the real test for both the films begin. It will be interesting to see how both of them hold on from today onward.

These five statements made by Meera show how brilliant she actually is.

by Ashtar Haideri

The writer is an undergraduate student at LUMS and has a keen interest in Pakistani Cinema.

The Pakistani film industry doesn’t have a lot to be proud of. Our neighbours have overshadowed us in every which possible way. From celebrity power to international accolades, extravagantly choreographed dance sequences to technological prowess, Bollywood is capturing revenue and people’s hearts across the globe. Any comparison with our own local cinema, the originally titled “Lollywood,” would just insult to injury when Bollywood celebrities are rubbing shoulders with their Hollywood counterparts. But all hope is not lost. We do have one diamond in the dust, or as the artist herself would characteristically say “Mitti mein heera” in the form of Meera. Yes, I know what you’re thinking. Meera? That same woman who has inspired legions of memes and parodies for her notoriously stilted English? Yes, the same one. But what us Pakistanis, ever the self-loathing critics that we are, fail to celebrate is the depth of knowledge hidden within the seemingly vain and superfluous utterances of our never-aging filum star. Here are 5 Meera-isms that are so deceptively insightful and philosophically deep, that only the likes of Nietsche and Heidegger could do justice to the profound wisdom hidden within them.

5. “Abhi mein 30 kay under under hoon”

Meera recently received attention for this response to a Geo reporter inquiring about her age. Although her age (along with those of other Lollywood actresses obsessed with calling their colleagues “seniors” in a derogatory sense) remains a source of mystery, even the most conservative estimates would put her at being 37 at the time of this answer. Could it be possible then that Meera has stumbled upon that famed object of ancient origin and reknown, the Philosopher’s Stone, that grants its possessor eternal life and perpetual youth? Meera’s lips say yes, but her increasingly botox-injected face says no. Only another passing year and another innocent response from Meera along these same lines will definitively resolve this mystery.

4. “Same to you”

Before Meera uttered these words, only talking parrots and hollow caves would predictably send back any words said to them back their sender without processing their meaning first. But Meera, being the ever thoughtful and considerate actress, said this in a reply to a reporter who had just said “Happy Birthday Meera!”What could be the hidden significance of Meera’s returned greeting? Is it possible that she was privy to the reporter himself having a birthday on the same day, or has she come up with a genius reply to any English statement she does not fully understand? Either way, Meera must be thanked for expanding the limits of our routine vocabulary. Now there is no reason why only the person with the birthday must hoard all birthday greetings for themselves: the person wishing them can join in on the fun too. Whether that person was also born on the same day, however, is a trivial detail in Meera’s endlessly gleeful philosophy.

3. “I was thinking maybe you are a combination…”

Ah, musings and observations – the origin of all philosophy. Here Meera is awestruck by the beauty of one of the contestants standing before her for judgment on a modeling pageant show. Some of her fellow panelists commented on the “exotic” looks of the participant, which lead her to reveal that her family hails from India. That doesn’t stop Meera from probing even further on the origins of her ancestry, however, stepping clearly into the territory of evolutionary biology. “Maybe your mummy is from Pakistan and your father is from Africa…” she blurts out to the embarrassed model in the making. But anyone with the requisite intellectual development realizes the depth of Meera’s observation – Meera is positing her own belief in the duality of nature and the combination of the spirit and matter. Well done, Meera. Aristotle would be proud, even if all notions of political correctness are thrown out of the window in the process.

2. “Everybody dies.”

Meera has now entered that awful stage of the philosopher’s life where the drudgery of existence seeps into the conscience of the questioning mind. Meera made this comment as a helpful reminder to her feuding husband who was continually issuing her threats of legal action and demanding his property back from a marriage she was denying the very existence of publicly. Despite photographic and documentary evidence to the contrary, Meera remained stoic towards the pressing anger of her then husband Atiq-ur-Rehman. In one particularly preachy Blackberry message since leaked to the media, Meera tells her husband to “reed the quran carefully” and to uphold her rights “bing a woman” because “Islam and quran sayed and world role [rule].” All very compelling arguments, but nothing strikes quite as boldly like the existential threat Meera issues in those two words.

1. “We will be…the back?”

Crossing into even bleaker territory, Meera is now in the darkest stages of her philosophical inquiry, tackling the central questions of existence that have pricked the philosophers’ and sages’ minds since time immemorial – the question of after-life. In fact, the whole context of Meera’s question could be said to encapsulate the struggle of life in one very short video leaked online, where Meera is preparing for an interview with famed fashion photographer Tapu Javeri and is clearly distressed by the prospect of having to read English despite the paper in front of her and the microphone in her ear guiding her what to say. At one point, our intrepid philosopher-actress almost gives up when she says “Mein bohat lost ho rahi hoon…Mere se kuch bhi nahi yaad ho raha” and rehearsing her scripted lines in such a rote fashion as to make twograders learning their multiplication tables envious. “Nahi ho ga much say please…Mujhay to rona aa raha hai mein to bhaag jao gi dar ke…” We’ve all been there, Meera. In such times when we face our greatest obstacles are we required to display our greatest strength. But should the doom and gloom conquer you, you can always revert to bringing back that missing dose of joy in your life and wish every random passer-by a Happy Birthday. Day 3 Box office : Both ‘Wrong Number’ and ‘Bin Roye’ have a solid weekend but ‘Wrong Number’ maintains its lead.

We cannot vouch for the authenticity of these ‘Bin Roye’ box office numbers given by independent box office tracking sites. While we have the official numbers from ARY Films for ‘Wrong Number’ we do not have the numbers for ‘Bin Roye’.

Here is the day to day breakdown for both the films:-
