Quit the Drag, Bring the Swag: Why Pakistani Drama Producers Need to Stop Dragging Dramas and Focus on Storytelling

Dragged dramas

It is a frequent occurrence that our dramas have fallen victim to dragged plots and extended number of episodes for generating more revenue. Pakistani dramas have made a mark for themselves due to their excellent storytelling and engaging narratives, which gets compromised when the drama gets stretched due to increasing the number of the episodes substantially following good ratings.

The art of stretching a drama:

This has become common to the point that you start watching a good drama and 10-15 episodes in the thought would definitely cross your mind that what if this drama gets stretched like many others, and it is highly likely that further five episodes in, you will see the repeated occurrence of flashbacks-the favourite weapon of choice of our producers to extend any drama.

But wait there is more…there is the long running of OSTs in the background with no development in the scene. And it can get infuriating to the extent that you start to vex the song that you initially loved-for there is no denying in the fact that Pakistani drama OSTs have a fanbase of their own.

Then we also witness the introduction of new sidetracks in the drama or plot holes and irrational behavior of the characters that just does not add up.

The obstructive impact of dragging dramas:

While there is no fixed number of episodes a drama serial should be, but when it gets dragged beyond the number of episodes the writer intended it to be, either by adding more scenes or flashbacks it loses its original charm very quickly.

Firstly, it starts to agitate the loyal audience who are invested in the plot and the characters. Then it gradually loses control of the narrative it is resting on. Eventually the drama loses the factor that has engrosses millions of viewers.

Although, most dramas that follow this strategy continue to garner views and get the short-term attraction-thus the revenues-but at what cost? Well, for a drama lover you have butchered art and have also abandoned the idea for the drama to be considered a classic and be remembered for years to come, which viewers can watch after ten, even twenty, years down the line.

Case in point we have dramas like Cheekh and Ye Dil Mera which had compelling narratives but fell victim to this strategy. Other dramas include Mere Humsafar, Kaisi Teri Khudgarzi, Deewangi, and Nand which got extended way more than the story demanded.

In the short term this plan of action might produce fruitful results for the producers however, in the long run it damages audience’s trust and can thus adversely effect the profits also, aside from the compromise on art and creativity.

Amidst the chaos the breath of fresh air-dramas that concluded early:

It is worth mentioning here that there are certain dramas that concluded well on-time and remain our favourites till day. Beginning from the classics we have the ever-green Humsafar which comprised of twenty-three episodes and Zindagi Gulzar Hai, which ended on twenty-six episodes.

Recent examples include Meray Paas Tum Ho, which despite its hype, ended at twenty-three episodes.

Geo TVs Alif was also 24 episodes long and kept viewers hooked without dragging content.

We hope that the makers adopt the narrative-first approach and put emphasis on storytelling and let the story go on for as long as it permits rather than following a pre-determined number of episodes. Producers can also add short series to the mix, which are appreciated by the audience.

Short series including Jurm and Sar e Rah did a decent job gripping viewers and promoting a social message. The success of both these short series’ is also an indication of a move towards shorter, more concise content.

Pasoori’s Makeover: The Bollywood Remix Machine Churns Out Another Pakistani Classic

Pasoori remake in Bollywood

Hell broke loose after news circulated on social media that Bollywood’s renowned producer Sajid Nadiadwala is geared up to create a remake of Ali Sethi and Shae Gill’s global sensation Pasoori”, for his upcoming film,”Satyaprem Ki Katha”, starring Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani. Pakistani fans weren’t happy hearing the news and hoped that the song would remain untouched as they expressed their dissatisfaction over social media.

However, this is not the first time that Bollywood has been accused of copying or ‘taking inspiration’ for their music from Pakistan.

Bollywood’s obsession with Pakistani music:

Over the years we have seen several instances when Bollywood has been accused of copying Pakistani music. This has repeatedly stirred discontent and left a bad taste among Pakistanis who own their songs and art due to their soulful rendition and innovative compositions.

But why is it such a bad thing?

When Indian filmmakers replicate Pakistani songs, they are taking away the recognition that Pakistani’s deserve, and it leads to exploitation of artists and producers who have put their heart and soul in making a song.

Furthermore, this also results in Pakistan getting less international recognition for its body of work and hampers the chances of talented musicians to pave their way to global platforms that not only opens new avenue of opportunities for them but also results in a better image of the country.

Examples of Bollywood Songs Inspired by Pakistani Music

Over the years several popular songs of Bollywood are a remake of Pakistani songs. Before Pasoori, there were claims that Abrar-ul-Haq’s Nach Punjaban was copied into an Indian song. However, the song ‘Punjaabban’ for Karan Johar’s film JugJugg Jeeyo was reproduced the legal way.

A pertinent example here can be of ‘Disco Deewane’ which was sung by brother-sister duo of Nazia and Zoheb Hassan. The song was changed to ‘The Disco Song’ used in another Karan Johar’s film Student of the Year.

Is it the similarities in culture and art that leads to ‘inspiration’:

It is imperative to note here that both countries share history and cultural ties and thus the musical traditions are intertwined. While it not uncommon for artists to draw inspirations from elsewhere and be inspired to create something new, the problem arises when the deserved recognition is not given.

Also, over the past there has been several instances where Indians and Pakistanis have collaborated for various projects together. Not only the artists from the two countries have visited their neighboring country but have also played a vital role in advancing the art and entertainment industry of their neighbors as an aftermath of several successful collaborations and exchange of ideas.

The Way Forward for Pasoori and Beyond:

The bottom line is that when an artist takes inspiration or decides to remake a work of art, they first ensure that they take intellectual rights from the original creator and give due credit.

Lastly, there is no denying the fact that both countries share strong ties due to their shared history. The ideal way forward is to foster good relationships and encourage collaboration between artists. We hope that such integrations continue, as long as they are legal and foster good relationships.

Pakistani Directors Unite: First-Ever Directors Guild Formed in Karachi

Director's Guild Cover

In a groundbreaking move, directors from Pakistan’s film, TV, and digital industries have come together to form the Directors Guild Pakistan (DGP), the country’s first and only official body for directors. The announcement was made at an oath-taking ceremony in Karachi on Sunday, 18th June, though the association had been in the works since 2016.

The DGP governing body boasts an impressive lineup, including Rafay Rashdi, Shahzad Nawaz, Saife Hasan, Mehreen Jabbar, and Wajahat Rauf. Misbah Khalid, a renowned director, has been chosen as the founding president of the guild.

Motive Behind the Guild

The primary goal of the Directors Guild is to provide training, mentorship, and support to young and aspiring directors in Pakistan. By fostering a sense of community and collaboration, the guild aims to elevate the quality of work produced by Pakistani directors and strengthen the country’s film, TV, and digital industries.

The formation of the DGP marks a significant milestone in the Pakistani entertainment industry, as it demonstrates the directors’ commitment to nurturing talent and promoting excellence in their field. The guild is expected to pave the way for a bright future for Pakistani directors and contribute to the growth and success of the country’s thriving entertainment sector.

If we have to negotiate with someone or there is a conflict resolution, we do it as an association not privately. The outcome is more positive in that case. There is representation of actors, writers and directors worldwide, so it is never too late to have one in Pakistan,” Wajahat Rauf said while speaking to media at the event.

Directors Guild to Address Industry-Related Issues

With the establishment of the Directors Guild Pakistan, the country’s directors now have an official platform to address industry-related issues, collaborate on projects, and work towards the betterment of the entertainment landscape in Pakistan. The DGP is poised to be a game-changer, ushering in a new era of creativity, innovation, and excellence for Pakistani directors and their audiences.

Nadir Ali Questions Sunita Marshall’s Faith: Time to Trade the Mic for Pranks?

Nadir Ali with Sunita Marshall

In a recent podcast, host Nadir Ali took it upon himself to question, and rather insensitively, the religious beliefs of actress Sunita Marshall. Marshall, a Christian, is married to Muslim actor Hassan Ahmed, and their children follow Islam.

In what could have been a fun and engaging conversation, Nadir Ali chose to berate Marshall for not converting to Islam. It’s quite baffling to witness a host dive into such a personal issue with a guest, especially when it’s none of their business. To top it off, Nadir Ali ended the conversation with a sarcastic, “Allah hidayat dey,” which translates to “May God give you guidance.”

Religion is a Personal Matter

As we all know, religion is a deeply personal and spiritual aspect of one’s life. It’s not something that should be discussed or questioned with such insensitivity, especially on a public platform. Nadir Ali’s comments not only crossed a line but also showed a lack of understanding and respect for Marshall’s choices.

In today’s world, where we strive for inclusivity and understanding, it’s essential to respect and honor the beliefs of others, even if they differ from our own. Nadir Ali’s comments were a stark reminder that there’s still much work to be done in fostering a more empathetic and open-minded society.

Sunita Marshall Showed Grace in Return to Nadir Ali

Sunita Marshall, on the other hand, has shown grace and poise in handling this uncomfortable situation. Her decision to maintain her faith while her husband and children follow Islam is a testament to the love and understanding that exists within their family.

Nadir Ali’s History of Insensitivity: Time to Stick to Pranks?

This isn’t the first time Nadir Ali has been called out for his insensitivity on his podcast. It seems that the host has a penchant for crossing the line and making his guests uncomfortable with his intrusive questions and comments. One can’t help but wonder if it’s time for Nadir Ali to stick to what he knows best: pranks.

Before venturing into the world of podcasting, Nadir Ali gained popularity for his hilarious and light-hearted pranks. His ability to make people laugh and entertain them was what made him stand out. However, it appears that his transition to podcast hosting has been a rocky one, with his insensitivity overshadowing the fun and engaging aspects of his show.

In conclusion, let’s take this incident as a reminder to be more mindful of the feelings of others and to respect their personal choices. After all, it’s our differences that make the world a beautiful and diverse place. And to Nadir Ali, we say, “May you find guidance to be more sensitive and understanding in the future.”

Umro Ayyar – A New Beginning: A Modern Take on a Timeless Urdu Classic

Umro Ayyar Cast

‘Umro Ayyar – A New Beginning’ is an upcoming film adaptation featuring the iconic character Umro Ayyar from the cherished Dastan-e-Amir Hamza. The movie, starring Sanam Saeed and a talented ensemble cast, seeks to bring the enchanting tales of Umro Ayyar to both Pakistani and international audiences.

Sanam Saeed Talks About Umro Ayyar – A New Beginning

Sanam Saeed, who plays a member of Ayyar’s group, refers to the movie as a folklore-based superhero film in her interview with Arab News. She emphasizes the blending of Ayyar’s origins with contemporary times, introducing the character to today’s world in a way that appeals to younger viewers.

Today’s generation needs to be told stories from Urdu literature … We have so many characters and stories to draw inspiration from. Unless we connect with our Urdu literature, it will die,” says Saeed. “We haven’t had a real-life motion feature film with a superhero at the heart of it. I have never been involved in a lot of stunts and actions in front of a green screen. The film is VFX-heavy … A stunt director and coordinator came from abroad while there were trainers who came to the set to teach us,” she adds.

Director Azfar Jafri highlights the deliberate choice to adopt a modern approach, noting that some ideas found in Western books and films originate from Umro Ayyar’s verses, leading to the false assumption that these concepts are wholly original.

Some western books and films incorporate elements derived from Umro Ayyar’s verse, leading our younger audience to believe that these concepts are entirely their own,” Jafri told Arab News. “We have aimed to shed light on the true source of inspiration and made the decision to create a film centered on Umro Ayyar.”

Dastan-e-Amir Hamza

Dastan-e-Amir Hamza, written by Ghalib Lakhnavi in 1855, is a compilation of Urdu stories featuring elements of magic, adventure, and intrigue.

The cast of ‘Umro Ayyar – A New Beginning’ includes Sanam Saeed, Usman Mukhtar, Faran Tahir, Ali Kazmi, Adnan Siddiqui, Simi Raheal, Sana Fakhar, Manzar Sehbai, Daniyal Raheal, Salmaan Shaukat, Osama Karamat, Uloomi Karim, Asad Chaudhary, Atif Rehan Siddique, Muhammad Imran, Bilal Jutt, Ruman Ali, and Shehroz Sanaullah.

Although the film’s release date is still unknown, the captivating storyline and the exceptional talent involved make it a highly anticipated cinematic experience.

Yay or Nay – Which of the Recently Released Pakistani Dramas Have Our Approval?

New dramas

With new Pakistani dramas airing on different channels on television with captivating story lines and stellar performances, the pressure is huge for each drama to stand out and make it to the top. While some get butchered by the critics and viewers alike, some standout and win the rating game and critics acknowledgement.

The following are five currently airing dramas which created a buzz before their release, but with a few episodes in, were they able to live up to the expectations? Read more to find out.

Ehraam e Junoon:

With twelve episodes already in Ehraam e Junoon is topping the charts, with each episode garnering on average nearly 10 million views on YouTube. The YouTube views are evidence of the drama’s popularity among the masses.

However, the story is another run-of-the-mill triangle love story which is nothing new for Pakistani dramas. The drama’s premise revolves around an upper middle class girl Shanzey (Neelam Muneer) who falls for a middle-class, jobless guy Shani (Imran Abbas). Shani likes his cousin Sajila (Nimra Khan) who is shown to be selfish and gluttonous. The story is progressing gradually and despite the high viewership it is an average plot when considered from critics’ point of view.

Jhoom:

GEO TV’s new drama Jhoom starring Zara Noor Abbas and Haroon Kadwani is winning the hearts of viewers and critics alike, subtracting the trivial plot holes here and there. The first episode has 24 million views till date and on average the episode receives 10 million views.

The drama is a combination of great performances and a sizzling chemistry between the two leads. The story is also unraveling on a progressive front with each episode talking about societal issues including age difference between a couple, mental health and depression, and the taboo regarding receiving treatment for depression.

Muhabbat Gumshuda Meri:

HUM TV’s two new protagonists Saim and Zubi in Muhabbat Gumshuda Meri are winning hearts not only in Pakistan but also across border. The first-time on-screen pairing of Dananeer Mobeen and Khushhal Khan are winning hearts left right and center. The drama is getting on average views of 7-9 million per episode.

Critics are also adoring their chemistry on-screen. The plot centers around the come of age romance and aptly captures the emotions of young blood and how they strive to fight with their emotions and pent-up energy. Critics and viewers await to see how these two love birds find a way to convince their families and find a way back to each other.

Neem:

The drama was on many viewers’ watchlists, before its release, for several reasons. Firstly, the drama marked the return of Mawra Hocane on screen after a nearly two-year hiatus, alongside the return of Ameer Gilani and Mawra Hocane on-screen as a couple after Sabaat. Furthermore, the story has an eye-catching backdrop, set in the beautiful valley of Kashmir alongside a complex multiplex plot with a social message.

The drama, unfortunately, is not topping the rating charts, but nevertheless, it is still garnering decent views, with its first episode having 2.6 million views and its second 1.1 million, as of now. The drama follows the story of Zimal played by Mawra Hocane who advocates that education can cause a revolution. The antagonist of the drama Karamat wants to marry Zimal and take control of the entire village they live in. While the character of Ameer Gilani likes Mawra.

The multilayered drama, for now, has the attention of critics and audience alike, provided that the story progresses at a decent note and does not become too preachy and looses it entertainment value in the process.

Jhok Sarkar:

New Farhan Saeed’s drama after Mere Humsafar and needless to say the audience was already hyped about it before its release, awaiting to see Farhan Saeed in a new avatar.

Jhok Sarkar is another drama targeting societal problems, teleporting the audience to the world of Jhok Sial where feudal Siraiki rules over poor and the destitute, treating the villagers inhumanly. Farhan Saeed is essaying the role of an honest police officer who is transferred to Jhok Sial where he will embark on the journey to finish the evil ruling over the area.

The drama has received decent views. Its first episode received 3.9 million views and the second 2.2 million. Although the drama is backed by stellar casts, captivating storyline and sub-plots and above-par direction, the drama lacks the ‘wow’ factor that hooks the audience. But we have high hopes from this one, hoping that it will soon catch up.

It is not an easy job for the makers of Pakistani dramas to maximise the entertainment quotient and balance the messages alongside, giving the audience a complete package. We do look forward to see how these dramas perform in the near future and will they be able to retain their strong suits. Well, we have to wait and see.

8 Pakistani Singers We Wish to See Acting

Pakistani singers

Pakistani singers and actors are blessed with talent and there is no denial in that. It is not unheard of to see the collaboration and exchange of talent between the world of singing and acting. Many of our actors have made their debut in singing and vice versa, case in point Asim Azhar, Atif Aslam, and Junaid Khan among others.

Galaxy presents you with a list of eight singers who we are sure will do wonders on television as actors. Here are eight singers whom we wish make their debut on television:

Aima Baig

Aima Baig gives us the girl-next-door vibe. She is beautiful, she is charming, and she knows how to perform on screen. The singer has impressed us with her presence in her music videos, whether it is with a fellow performer, case in point ‘Na Cher Malangaan Nu’ ft. Farhan Saeed or her solo performance in her latest music video ‘Pyar Hua Tha’.

Hassan Raheem

The new kid on the block knows how to groove and win his viewers’ hearts. We have seen several shades of the singer in his music videos. In one of his music videos ‘Joona’ he is low key dancing to a song in a supermarket by himself while in another music video of his, he is inside a bathtub, singing his heart out. There is diversity, creativity, and potential which we hope to see on television.

Momina Mustehsan

Remember the girl who became an overnight sensation after her song ‘Afreen Afreen’ of Coke Studio was released with the legend Rahat Fateh Ali Khan? Momina Mustehsan has retained a similar charm and innocence even six years down the line after her first song debut. She has given us many music pieces to groove on after that and we would love to see her take on an acting project.

Shae Gill

Another Coke Studio debut, Shae Gill won hearts both nationally and internationally after her hit song ‘Pasoori’ with Ali Sethi got released. She is down-to-earth, easy going, and loves to experiment with her choice of music and her collaborations with different artists. We are certain she can bring the same energy when it comes to acting.

Qurat-ul-Ain Balouch

Whether it’s the rendition of the sad song ‘Humsafar’ or an energetic piece that will lift your mood such as ‘Sammi Meri Waar’, QB always knocks it out of the park with her soulful and deep voice. QB is a powerful performer and has a great screen presence. We can only imagine what she can do with her talent if she takes on acting jobs, but one thing is for certain: she will create magic.

Kaifi Khalil:

Currently, the nation’s beloved singer, Kaifi Khalil came, and he conquered. Kaifi came to the limelight after his debut in Coke Studio song ‘Kana Yaari’. Later he released his first solo ‘Kahani Suno’ which garnered millions of views and topped Spotify charts in Pakistan. Undoubtedly, he has the charm to command the screen and we hope to see him do so soon.

Bilal Saeed:

Singer of hit songs like ‘Lambiya Judaiyan’ and ‘Bari’, Bilal Saeed knows how to ace any song and how to perfectly sing any lyrics. He has given us several hits and has added more flavour to Punjabi songs, giving us more variety to choose from. He has a unique personality which will certainly shine more on television.
