When I was working with Syra, I thought ‘Okay, I like her, she’s good.’ But, the day she wore the uniform, I had a real-life filmy moment. Syra was wearing heels and a leather outfit [uniform] and she was running. I was running as well and I was [awe-struck].”

The Colorism Issue in Desi Industries Isn’t Getting Any Better

Blackface in Parizaad

Colorism is a major and serious issue still plaguing the world. Anyone who doesn’t fit the Eurocentric beauty standards is treated as an inferior. This issue, naturally, becomes even more prevalent in the entertainment industry where an artist’s looks are considered as most important.

Numerous dark-skinned artists have come forward over the years to share their experiences of being mistreated by their industries only due to their skin color. Colorism not only hindered the careers of many but also objected them to vile and disgusting comments on social media.

Pakistan is no stranger to this problem either. Fortunately, in this age of awareness, these grievances are being heard by many and many are trying to fight them.

It is just as bad across the border, with India trying to fight this issue as well. Bollywood, and now Hollywood, superstar Priyanka Chopra has talked about the colorism she has faced on multiple occasions. But recently, Sonam Bajwa shared how colorism started at home for her and then also bled into her career in Punjabi films.

Let’s bring some light now to some cases of this in our own entertainment industry.

Parizaad

Parizaad, while lauded by critics, did face considerable backlash for its poor attempt at a progressive story. The irony of hiring a light-skinned actor and making him do brownface for a role which could’ve been an opportunity for a dark-skinned actor was completely lost on HUM TV.

Sadly, the general audience didn’t seem to care as much, making the show a massive hit which set a horrible precedent. In an industry where dark-skinned actors already don’t get much work, to paint light-skinned dark for their roles makes it even worse. A lot needs to be done to rectify this.

Amna Ilyas

Famous model and actress Amna Ilyas has been extremely vocal about the issue of colorism, something she has faced her entire life. In a now iconic acceptance speech for her Lux Style Award for “Best Female Model” she put down the naysayers who said she couldn’t make it in the industry due to her dark skin.

She has also been an advocate against the promotion of fairness creams.

Fairness Creams

Skin whitening products are, unfortunately, very popular in Pakistan. Many famous actors and actresses have endorsed such products. In recent years, however, we have started to see these ads get backlash from those fighting against colorism.

Superstar Mahira Khan came forward a few years ago on Twitter saying she has gotten multiple offers for fairness cream ads throughout her career but refuses to endorse them as a matter of principle.

If only more actors did the same. Zara Noor Abbas came under fire for promoting fairness creams and tried to make an illogical case that it had nothing to do with racism. Colorism stems from racism and therefore cannot be plucked out of our country so easily. But if enough people are fighting for change and are being heard, then we may find a road to betterment.

Arijit Singh’s Pasoori Nu Sparks Musical Outrage Across Borders

Pasoori old and new

In a shocking turn of events, Indian singer Arijit Singh’s rendition of the song “Pasoori” – now released as Pasoori Nu – has left fans and music enthusiasts in a state of utter despair. The once melodious tune, originally a Coke Studio single by Shae Gill and Ali Sethi, has now been reduced to a mere cacophony of noise, generating negative reactions from both India and Pakistan.

The song, featured in the upcoming film SatyaPrem Ki Katha, has been accused of ruining the brilliance of the original, sparking a musical outrage that has transcended borders.

Social Media is Abuzz

Directed by Sameer Vidwans and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, Shareen Mantri Kedia, and Kishor Arora, SatyaPrem Ki Katha stars Kartik Aaryan, Kiara Advani, Shikha Talsania, Ritu Shivpuri, Supriya Pathak, Mahru Sheikh, and Gajraj Rao. While the film’s cast and crew eagerly await the movie’s release, the controversy surrounding “Pasoori” has cast a dark shadow over their efforts.

Social media has been abuzz with scathing reviews and hilarious memes, as fans from both sides of the border express their disappointment and anger. One user tweeted, “Arijit Singh’s rendition of Pasoori is like mixing ketchup with biryani – a culinary and musical disaster!” Another chimed in saying, “If I wanted to listen to a cat screeching, I would have just stepped on its tail. #PasooriRuined.”

Pakistanis Outraged With Pasoori Nu

Pakistanis are rightfully outraged at the new release and want answers to Bollywood’s blatant hypocrisy towards Pakistan. While the industry has an ‘All-Pakistan ban in place’ with Pakistani artists being isolated and secluded from all recent releases, Pasoori has somehow made the cut.

As the dust settles on this musical debacle, one thing is for certain – “Pasoori” will forever be remembered as a cautionary tale of how not to remake a classic. In the immortal words of one disgruntled fan, “Arijit, you had one job. ONE JOB!”

Unleashing the Silver Screen Potential: 7 Drama Actors We Can’t Wait to See in Movies

Drama actors ready for movies

There is no doubt that Pakistani drama industry comprises of unparalleled talent that has proven itself time and again. From taking on daring roles to winning us over with their acting skills, Pakistani actors have done it all.

Many of our actors have played challenging roles on television that have not only garnered appreciation from Pakistanis themselves but have also received admiration and love from abroad. However, with the exponential growth of the film industry recently, we hope to see the same actors showing their immense talent on the silver screen as well.

We present you a list of five television actors whom we wish to see on the big screen:

Iqra Aziz

Iqra Aziz is one of those actresses that came and conquered the television screen and made a name for herself as the leading actress of the country within a short span of time. From playing the hot-headed, hardworking girl in Suno Chanda, to the resilient girl who stands tall when any adversity hits her in Ranjha Ranjha Kardi-the actress has done it all. Moreover, she has also won our hearts with her performances as a negative lead in dramas Khamoshi and Jhooti.

We can picture the actress leaving her mark on the silver screen as well, whenever she chooses to make her debut.

Sarah Khan

Sarah Khan’s trajectory in the drama industry is nothing but diverse and inspiring. From her debut in Badi Aapa as Sharmeen to her latest performance in Wabaal as Anum she has proved her mantle as an actress repeatedly.

Over the years the actress has opted to choose diverse scripts and challenging roles. Case in point, her performance in Sabaat as Miraal was staggering. The character she played was an egoistic and arrogant woman, hailing from an elite background, who wanted everything under her control. Then, we have seen her in roles like Maha in Hum Tum where she is playing a psychology student and a fitness freak, always getting herself in trouble along with her sisters.

Rest assured, Sarah can easily pull off any role that she decides to take on for her first feature film.

Ayeza Khan

Ayeza Khan is the epitome of grace and beauty. She has given many hits over several years due to her right choice of scripts and her acting skills that put life into her roles. On of our favourite roles of the actress is as Farah Ibrahim in Pyarey Afzal where she worked alongside Hamza Ali Abbasi who played Afzal. She aced her role as the girl next door and managed to teleport the audience to the world of Farah and Afzal and their incomplete and hard-hitting love story.

Another notable role she has played is of Mehwish in the drama Meray Paas Tum Ho in which she essayed the role of a selfish and covetous woman who leaves her husband and child for a wealthy man. Ayeza triumphantly was able to exhibit the complex emotions that the role demanded from her.

We are sure that the actress will be able to translate her experience and expertise from the dramas to films eloquently.

Dur-e-Fishan Saleem

She is smart, charming, witty, and knows how to leave her mark. Dur-e-Fishan has a strong screen presence and manages to sway the audience with any role that she decides to take on. The actress made her debut back in 2020 in the drama serial Dil Ruba as Erum and from there she was unstoppable.

Following that the actress appeared in dramas including Bharaas, Pardes, and Juda Huway Kuch Is Tarah. Her most notable performance was in her recent drama Kaisi Teri Khudgarzi where she played the character of Mehak. She also appeared in the recently concluded mini-series Jurm.

The actress can indeed pull off a role in a film and we are hoping to see soon in one.

Sanam Jung

She is an engaging host and a convincing actor who has played multi-faceted characters over the years. Sanam made her debut in drama Dil e Muztar which was well received by the audience. Sanam also ended up receiving the ‘HUM Award for Best Television Sensation Female’.

Recently, the actress is playing the role of Mona in the drama Pyari Mona where she is playing a substantial role of an over-weight woman who is traversing through life and is successfully redefining herself, refusing to let anything or anyone put her down.

Assuredly seeing Sanam in a film will be a treat for her fans where she can take on meaningful roles that leave an impact on the audience.

Haroon Kadwani

The new addition to the entertainment industry, Haroon Kadwani has given repeated hits and has been able to establish himself as an actor in a short period of time. He stepped into the entertainment industry with a telefilm Humari Tumhari. He bagged roles in popular dramas Izn-e-Rukhsat and Mohabbat Tumse Nafrat Hai.

The actor made his lead debut in the telefilm Hamari Tumhari. His telefilm Ruposh was able to garner decent views. Currently he is playing the lead in the drama Jhoom alongside Zara Noor Abbas.

With his foreign education in acting alongside his experience, we are sure that the actor will impress his audience with his film debut as well.

Hamza Sohail

Hamza Sohail rose to his popularity after his role in Fairy Tale as Farjad. His character which was portrayed as a punctual, stubborn yet kind-hearted man was lauded by the audience. He has also appeared in other dramas including Raqeeb Se and Badshah Begum. His role in both the dramas was well received by the fans and critics alike.

Following that, Hamza has been able to win a huge fan base who hope to see him in future projects very soon. Hamza is indeed a promising star of our industry and his skill will be well utilized in a film.

Which of the actors would you like to see on the big screen? Do share with us.

A Glimpse of Karachi’s Soul: “John” Trailer Promises a Riveting Cinematic Experience

John Teaser

The official trailer for Babar Ali’s much-anticipated Pakistani film “John” has finally been unveiled, and it’s nothing short of a visual treat. Set against the vibrant and chaotic backdrop of Karachi, the movie delves into themes of love, life, and death, promising a gripping portrayal of the city’s streets.

Strong Cast and True Essence of Karachi

The meticulous attention to detail in the trailer is truly commendable, as it captures the essence of Karachi’s bustling lifestyle. The cast appears to be in their element, with Romaisa Khan effortlessly embodying the lead female role as a true Karachiite. Raza Samo, a popular YouTuber, brings a touch of raw humour and jest to the film, adding a layer of authenticity.

Aashir Wajahat, playing the titular character of John, may be a little raw in his performance, but his emotional range and dedication to the role are evident. His portrayal of John’s journey through the complexities of life in Karachi is bound to resonate with audiences.

Brilliant Cinematic Style

One of the most striking aspects of the trailer is the brilliant cinematic style employed by Babar Ali, who has not only directed but also written the film. The captivating visuals and immersive storytelling showcased in the trailer have already generated immense excitement among moviegoers.

From Scepticism to Anticipation: Public Embraces “John” with Open Arms

Before the release of the official trailer, “John” was met with scepticism and even ridicule from the public. Many doubted the potential of the film, poking fun at its title and questioning the choice of cast members, particularly the inclusion of newcomer Aashir Wajahat and YouTuber Raza Sam . The scepticism seemed to cast a shadow over the film’s prospects, creating an air of uncertainty around its reception.

However, the tide has turned with the release of the captivating trailer. Showcasing the brilliant cinematic style, immersive storytelling, and the impeccable portrayal of Karachi’s streets, the trailer has managed to silence the naysayers and convert them into eager fans.

The public’s initial mockery has transformed into genuine excitement for the film’s release. The trailer has not only piqued the interest of viewers but also instilled a sense of pride in the Pakistani film industry’s growth and potential.

With its powerful narrative and stellar cast, “John” is all set to take the Pakistani film industry by storm. Mark your calendars for 14th July, 2023, as this enthralling cinematic experience hits theatres near you.

Here is Why Dawood From Yunhi is One of the Best Characters On-Screen

Charming, patient, obedient, kind-hearted and understanding-these are some qualities that the character of Dawood in Yunhi possesses. Played by Bilal Ashraf, Dawood is a simple and innocent guy, hailing from a middle-class background and raised in a conservative and religious family.

With each episode of Yunhi, Dawood is slowly but assuredly not only winning Kim’s heart but is also winning the audience over. Here is why:

Dawood stands tall in a sea of toxic male characters on television

In a time where it is the norm to present male characters on-screen that are toxic and a poor depiction of real-life men in society, the character of Dawood is breaking the stereotypes and presenting a character that is worth the admiration and applause.

It is worth mentioning here that the character is not placed on a pedestal which is unattainable by a human. On the other hand, he is shown to make mistakes and is prone to human emotions. He even makes mistakes, lies at times, and gets angry yet he indulges in a constant quest to improve himself.

Instances where Dawood won hearts in Yunhi

There were several times when Dawood exceptionally left an impact on the viewers and gave us many awe-worthy moments.

Dawood teaching Kim to pray:

In the promo of the most recent episode, we see Dawood teaching Kim to pray and telling her that it is okay to make mistakes while praying because Allah judges you by your intentions. Rather than following the norm of our society of scolding, or demotivating a person for not praying perfectly, Dawood instead encourages her which gives her the confidence to understand and practice religion better.

Dawood taking a stand for Kim:

There are several instances in the drama where Dawood takes a stand for Kim when it comes to his family. Our favourite was when Kim accepted that she was responsible for Dawood’s sister running away from the house and the whole household lashed out at her but Dawood placed his trust on Kim and tried to cool down the situation.

Dawood praising Kim for her cooking skills:

Dawood knows how to praise his woman and there are no second thoughts about this.

In the world of dramas where we are used to seeing men physically and mentally abusing women, Dawood is an exception. He appreciates Kim every chance he gets. One of our favourite instances were when Kim made him an omelette for breakfast and Dawood was all praises for Kim’s efforts and her cooking skills.

Kudos to the makers of Yunhi, including the director Mohammed Ehteshamuddin and the writer Sarwat Nazir for bringing such a positive character to life on-screen. We hope that other makers take cues from this and continue to essay such characters on-screens that reflect the positivity in society and show more characters that are inspiring.

“Umro Ayyar – A New Beginning” Teaser Hints At A Wondorous New Realm

Umro Ayyar Teaser

We finally have the teaser of the highly anticipated film Umro Ayyar- A New Beginning. To cut the chase, the recently dropped teaser is an impressive one. As per initial reactions the trailer differs only slightly from the colors and scenarios of the last year released ‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’. The teaser depicts an expansion into the same realm, perhaps because of the same dark and dreary color scheme of the film.

Who Is Umro Ayyar?

Umro Ayyar is a legendary, fictitious hero from the “Dastan-e-Amir Hamza” series, written by Ghalib Lakhnavi back in the 19th century. Umro Ayyar is a hero who used his courage, intelligence and magic to overcome villains and enemies threatening the existence of mankind on earth.

In this film adaption by Azfar Jafri, we see Usman Mukhtar playing the titular character while Sanam Saeed plays a strong member of his team. Alongside Mukhtar and Saeed, Umro Ayyar will see a star studded cast inclduing Adnan Siddiqui, Manzar Sehbai,  Faran Tahir, Ali Kazmi, Simi Raheal, Sana Fakhar, Daniyal Raheal, Salmaan Shaukat, Osama Karamat amongst others.

What We Think Of The Teaser?

The action depicted in the teaser is cool and crisp while the fatalities the teaser shows are gruesome and bloody. The teaser brings to life the character of the story in ways that the old fables have tried to do so in the past. While stories only left the characters to imagination, the teaser and subsequently the film show live versions of the much loved superheros on the screen. The action scenes that we witness in the teaser blow soul into the fictitious Umro Ayyar, fighting villains left, right and centre, trying to save the world and create a new wondrous realm.

Filled with magic, adventure, and intrigue, the teaser boasts of an interesting watch. The stunt choreography in the teaser is surprisingly powerful, giving glimpses of the level of intense combat that we haven’t really seen much of in Pakistan. The makers are yet to announce the release date of Umro Ayyar- A New Begining and screen a trailer, but whatever we have witnessed to far, is enough to keep the audience hanging, wishing to enter the world of Umro Ayyar and his disciples.

Surprise Entry of Hamza Ali Abbasi

The teaser for Umro Ayyar also marks the surprise entry of renowned actor Hamza Ali Abbasi. Previously seen in the Legend of Maula Jatt, Hamza Ali Abbasi is a big addition to the already star cast. Besides his physical presence, the background information in the teaser are also narrated by Hamza Ali Abbasi.

We will keep our viewers updated and will let you know once more details related to the release of the film come out.
