Box Office: Chupan Chupai struggles while Arth and Rangreza out of cinemas!

We cannot vouch for the authenticity of these box office numbers given by independent box office tracking site Box Office Detail. However, until we have some official box-office tracking system in Pakistan this is all we have got. The numbers are also revised at times and hence you may observe fluctuations.

December 2017 will definitely go down in Pakistani Cinema history as one of the most disappointing periods where three mega-budget films, with big names and crazy promotions released and were rejected by the audiences. Whereas two of the three films, Arth and Rangreza, were complete washouts, Chupan Chupai did comparatively better but was a box office flop nonetheless. Here is a brief summary of their box office fates:

Arth

The film had everything going for it, or so it seemed. But the box office numbers on the first day itself had sent shock waves through the Film Industry. That a film starring superstar Shaan Shahid could do so horribly spoke volumes about the new age of cinema and how the rules were changing. The downhill journey continued as showtimes diminished with passing days and now in its fourth week the film is almost out of cinemas barring a show or two.No official numbers have been released but experts say the film has made somewhere around 2.5-3.5 crore and that as a lifetime number for a Shaan film is shocking.

Rangreza

Rangreza was never expected to set the box office on fire but the numbers that came out on the first day weren’t expected either. The film was completely rejected by the audiences and critics which was visible by the numbers the film generated over the coming days. The film is completely out of cinemas right now and has ended its lifetime run at about 2.2 crore.

Chupan Chupai

Chupan Chupai did somewhat better than both the above films but that does not mean it had a successful run at the box office. The film had a 1.4 crore weekend and ended week one on 2.3 crore. In its second week, it had to face tough competition from new release Parchi and the numbers for Chupan Chupai saw a further decline. The film collected 80 lakhs in week two taking its total two-week tally to 3.1 crore. The film is in its third week and has some showtimes which can help add some more money to the total tally. The film will probably end its lifetime at about 3.5 crore.

Nominations for the 17th Annual Lux Style Awards are out!

Pakistan’s oldest and most prestigious award show is back with its seventeenth season and the nominations were just made public today via a post on website Something Haute. There has been no official communication by the makers but nonetheless, we now know who made the cut and keeping up with the tradition, there are some major snubs and wow moments whereas the nominations are concerned. But we are glad that unlike the last few years the awards will be held in the first quarter of the year and celebrate last year in a timely and relevant manner. Below is the list of nominations but before that is our brief commentary on what we felt was wrong with the nominations.

  1. Verna for Best Film and Shoaib Mansoor for Best Director? Are you for real LSA!
  2. No Shaan Shahid for Best Actor! Need we say more?
  3. Balu Mahi nominations seem a bit OTT.
  4. Chupan Chupai is a shot for shot remake ( read rip-off) of a Tamil Film. Does it really deserve a Best Film and Best Director nomination?
  5.  Chalay Thay Saath and Mehrunisa V Lub U, both deserved more space in the nominations.

Box Office: 2017’s sun sets leaving dismay for ‘Arth’, ‘Rangreza’ and ‘Chupan Chupai’

We cannot vouch for the authenticity of these box office numbers given by independent box office tracking site Box Office Detail. However, until we have some official box-office tracking system in Pakistan this is all we have got. The numbers are also revised at times and hence you may observe fluctuations.

2017 ended with grave disappointments for last three releases of the year – ‘Arth’, ‘Rangreza’, and ‘Chupan Chupai’.

Two of these films, ‘Arth’ and ‘Rangreza’, had already seen the distressing first week when the third release ‘Chupan Chupai’ joined them this weekend to try its luck on the box office. The second weekend brought misfortune for the former duo, as the graphs of both films nose-dived dramatically.

The new release ‘Chupan Chupai’, perhaps, performed better than the other two on the weekend. Given the lukewarm response it received, it also cannot be termed as a box office success. However, with much less promotion and hype, it still could outdo the other two releases on its opening weekend, which demands some appreciation.

Talking about the numbers, ‘Rangreza’ which collected 1.8 crore on its first week, could add only 15 lac on the second weekend. The 11-day collections of the film, with limited preview on Thursday, tallied to 1.95 crore only.

As for ‘Arth’, no official numbers have been released by either the makers or our friends at Box Office Detail but sources have confirmed that the film has done only slightly better than ‘Rangreza’ with its 11-day collections barely crossing 2 crore margin.

‘Rangreza’ and ‘Arth’ join the legion of other box office disasters of 2017.

Coming to the new release of this week, ‘Chupan Chupai’ opened normally and collected 45 lac on Friday. It saw slight gain on Saturday and raked in 50 lac. Whereas, not unexpectedly, the collections dipped back to 45 lac on Sunday. The film, thus, collected a total sum of 1.4 crore on its first weekend, which is better than the first weekend collections of both ‘Arth’ and ‘Rangreza’.

In a glance:

  • Arth (11 days): 2.01 crore
  • Rangreza (11 days): 1.95 crore
  • Chupan Chupai (3 days): 1.4 crore

We did not wish to welcome 2018 with such a dismal report. We hope the coming days will bring good news for Pakistani films. Stay tuned for more box office updates.

Box Office: Arth and Rangreza open to shockingly low numbers!

We cannot vouch for the authenticity of these box office numbers given by independent box office tracking site Box Office Detail. However, until we have some official box-office tracking system in Pakistan this is all we have got. The numbers are also revised at times and hence you may observe fluctuations.

2017 was definitely not a good year for Pakistani Cinema as most of the films that released this year failed to impress the audiences and emerged as box office duds. Hopes were high that the last month of 2017 would be a success as two eagerly awaited films were hitting cinemas. On one side was Lollywood superstar Shaan Shahid’s directorial comeback ‘Arth’ which featured names such as Shaan himself, Humaima Malik, Mohib Mirza and Uzma Hassan, on the other hand, was  Amir Mohiuddin’s ‘Rangreza’ which starred Bilal Ashraf, Urwa Hocane, and Gohar Rasheed.

But they say you cant predict what happens at the box office on Friday and boy was this Friday a shocker! Technically both the films opened with a limited release on Thursday so the damage had begun there itself, but it was expected that with the weekend kickstarting on Friday both the films would improve. However, no such thing happened and the tally for both the films for the first three days is a disappointment.

Rangreza has collected a total of 65 lakhs, in the first three days! Yes, that’s not a typo but the film actually has raked in this much in three days. Here is the day to day break down:

Thursday (Limited Release): 9 lakhs
Friday: 31 lakhs
Saturday: 25 lakhs
Total: 65 lakhs

As for Arth, no official numbers have been released by either the makers or our friends at Box Office Detail but sources have confirmed that the film has done only slightly better than Rangreza with numbers ranging somewhere between 75 lakhs to 1 crore, which for a film of Arth’s magnitude is depressing.

This has been one black weekend for our industry, let’s hope the coming days have better things in store for the films.

Arth (Review): This masterclass in brilliant acting is simply unmissable

Movie Name: Arth

Release Date: December 21, 2017

Director: Shaan Shahid

Review by: Momin Ali Munshi

A schizophrenic superstar, a has been singer, a frustrated housewife, and a cheating husband. What happens when the lives of four such individuals cross paths? Well, you get a beautiful film with intense drama, a myriad of emotions and stellar performances called Arth- The Final Destination.

Written and directed by Shaan Shahid the film is a retelling of the classic Indian film ‘Arth’. Now while Shaan may have donned the directors cap in the past, this was his first foray into direction where the new age cinema is concerned so there were a lot of questions, hopes, and expectations from the man who is, without doubt, the poster boy of Lollywood. And does he live up to them, hell yeah!

Let me be the first one to say that ‘Arth’ is not a perfect film, it has its flaws such as choppy editing and a loopy screenplay but the brilliant performances by the four leads, a stirring background score and beautifully composed dialogues and scenes completely make up for the glitches and give you a film that is definitely worth seeing.

The film begins with Ali ( Shaan Shahid) making his way back to Pakistan after a brutal divorce in London which has left him penniless. Ali was a famous singer back in the day and hopes to reconnect with his fans in Pakistan. One such crazy fan is Uzma ( Uzma Hassan) whose life takes a turn for the worse when husband of ten years Umar ( Mohib Mirza) discloses his affair with superstar Umaima ( Humaim Malick). What happens next is a roller coaster ride full of confrontations, changing equations as the characters reach Arth, their final destination.

The breakout star of the film is without a doubt Uzma Hassan who has given a performance of a lifetime. Pre-release I was wondering why would Shaan cast Uzma in the titular role where he could have opted for many known faces who would have not only added the commercial appeal but would have given a brilliant performance too. But after having seen the film let me tell you, I got my answer and how! There is nobody in our entire industry who could have done this role as well as Uzma has done. She makes you laugh, makes you cry and you are completely invested in her character. The confrontation scene right before the interval gave me goosebumps, that’s all because of Uzma’s uninhibited acting. Bravo, this girl has arrived!

Shaan Shahid is a megastar, but with this film, he peels off the mask of stardom and shows that he is a gifted actor before anything else! There is one particular scene in the beginning where we see a dejected Shaan leaving a concert venue after being ridiculed by the organizers, he then runs into Uzma and that entire scene where we see a star entertaining a fan while he is himself broken from the inside is just beautiful. There are many more instances where Shaan shows his prowess as an actor and proves why he is a force to be reckoned with.

When the trailer came out a lot of people felt that Shaan had molded the original film and centered this new film around his character, but the detractors couldn’t have been any more wrong. This new Arth very much revolves around the life of Uzma as the original film did around Shabana Azmi with Shaan Shahid having a somewhat more meatier role as compared to the original film. Kudos to Shaan for staying true to the essence of the film.

There is no easy way of saying this, Mohib Mirza and Humaima Malick have both been wasted. No, this does not mean that their performance was bad, on the contrary, they both did wonderfully, it is just that they did not have much room to perform. Humaiama really gets into the skin of the character as the psychotic actress Umaima. Whatever little she has, she does a brilliant job. Similar Mohib, who is a seasoned actor knows what he is doing but again the writing fails him as he is hardly there in the film and it seems as if scenes featuring Mohib were chopped off at the editing table because its most of his scenes where we see choppy editing and jump cuts.

The editing and screenplay as I briefly touched upon earlier are somewhat off. The lapses of time are clearly visible which confuse the viewers as to what is happening. A lot of things are not explicitly stated and left for the audiences to assume themselves which could both be seen as a plus or minus given your perspective. But I did feel that the ending was rather rushed and the impact could have been greater had it not seemed so forced for two characters, while completely unresolved for the other two. The dubbing was also not on point at times, especially the first few scenes where there is a major lip-synch issue.

But the technical glitches were completely overshadowed by the strong performances accompanied by the great writing which gave us some of the most impactful scenes in the new age of Pakistani Cinema. The dialogues are definitely a strength and some dialogues will definitely stay in the mind of the audience long after having seen the film. Also, the film is very real and bold in its portrayal of characters, be it the intimacy or the tiny details they all help add to the authenticity. Shaan wanted to make a film showcasing the real side of romance on reel, and he has succeeded!

The film has eleven songs and it would not be wrong to say that the music of the film is the second biggest plus point after the performances by the actors. Almost all songs propel the story forward and synch well with the film and do not come across as un-needed ( well maybe the film could have done without a song or two). Be it ‘Sanwar Day Khudaya’ or ‘Murshed Jee’ or ‘Ronay De’ each song has been composed beautifully and that shows when the viewer is completely engrossed in whatever is happening on screen.

Verdict: Watch it for the stellar performances, stirring background score and the bold depiction of a mature love story.

Rating: 3/5 stars

‘I don’t consider myself a star,’ says Bilal Ashraf, the rockstar of ‘Rangreza’

Bilal Ashraf has been pushing the boundaries since forever. While working for the hedge fund in New York, with double major in finance and art, he did not think one day he would become an actor. He, then, moved to England, where he studied VFX and animation, hoping to try his luck in the visual effects direction one day.

But, life had a different plan for him and he ended up becoming an actor in his homeland, Pakistan. He was offered to do an action-filled cameo in spy-thriller O21, opposite Shaan Shahid. Having a knack for action films, he thought it would be his forte, but as an unexpected turn of events, he was offered to play an angry-man-cum-romantic-hero in Janaan, released last year.

This was the new beginning for the budding star. Now, he is taking it to next level by playing a rockstar in upcoming musical-romance Rangreza, releasing on 21st December. There is a lot to do and achieve for the young actor and he is keeping his eyes on what is attainable and beyond that.

Bilal Ashraf sat down with Galaxy Lollywood to share his experience of working with the amazing crew of Rangreza, international response he has been receiving for the film and what is next in the pipeline. Read this interesting discussion with the heartthrob below.

In conversation with Shaan Shahid: Talking ‘Arth’ and clearing the air on some of his misconstrued views

Shaan Shahid needs no introduction. He is the bonafide superstar of Lollywood, ruling the industry for more than two decades and still doing good.

Shaan Shahid is returning to the silver screen in the avatar of a romantic hero after a huge gap with his home-production ‘Arth – the Destination’, which is the remake of classic Bollywood film by the friend of Pakistan and the renowned filmmaker, Mahesh Bhatt. Arth is clashing with another Pakistani film, Rangreza, on the box office on 21st December, which bodes well for the industry as two major films are releasing the same day.

We got in touch with the superstar to talk about his upcoming movie, his criticism of Indian content being played in Pakistani cinema houses and Pakistani artists working across the border and if we will see him in a light-hearted comedy film anytime soon. The actor-turned-director opened up on many important things and cleared the air on some of his point of views misconstrued by others.

Read the interview of Shaan Shahid below and share your feedback in the comments section.

Gohar Rasheed talks about ‘Rangreza’, Pakistani cinema and clash with ‘Arth’

Gohar Rasheed has done limited yet significant work on the silver screen. After giving well-praised performances in Seedlings, Main Hoon Shahid Afridi and O21, the theater alum is appearing in a quirky character in musical-romance Rangreza releasing on 21st December.

Galaxy Lollywood touched base with the passionate actor about his upcoming movie ‘Rangreza’ and talked in length about slew of topics ranging from Pakistani cinema to things missing in our films, clashing with the superstar Shaan Shahid’s upcoming movie ‘Arth’ on the box office and his upcoming projects.

Verna (Review): A horrendous film from a man it was least expected of!

Movie Name: Verna

Release Date: November 17, 2017

Director: Shoaib Mansoor

Review by: Momin Ali Munshi

Verna is Shoaib Mansoor’s third outing as a film director after having delivered two milestone films Khuda Kay Liye and Bol which released in 2007 and 2011 respectively. The third film was eagerly awaited ever since it was first announced, and the inclusion of superstar Mahira Khan as the lead actress was another layer of icing on this already delicious cake. Goes without saying that expectations were soaring high for this film which was supposed to complete the hattrick for director Shoaib Mansoor, who by the way is one of the very few filmmakers who has simultaneously tasted commercial and critical success. But does the film live up to the expectations? The answer is a harsh no!

Box Office: ‘Verna’ nearly ends its box office run with disappointing numbers!

We cannot vouch for the authenticity of these box office numbers given by independent box office tracking site Box Office Detail. However, until we have some official box-office tracking system in Pakistan this is all we have got. The numbers are also revised at times and hence you may observe fluctuations.

It was not a smooth sail for Shoaib Mansoor’s highly-anticipated Mahira Khan starer ‘Verna’. But, despite enduring censor turmoil and release uncertainty, the film made it to cinemas all across the country on the due date. However, due to a late issued certificate it released later in the evening and missed some of the key shows in afternoon/evening.

The movie was much hyped due to the presence of Mahira Khan and direction of Shoaib Mansoor but from the opening weekend itself, the movie failed to live up to the expectations the audiences and the industry had from it and didn’t really get any appreciation.

The movie had collected around 2.7crores in its first weekend which was reasonably good considering the film had opened late on Friday. From Monday onwards the film saw huge fall all over Pakistan as the collections were 50% down from first Friday which in itself was a limited release hence the first week ended at around 4 crores.

The second week saw more fall which could partly be explained by the fact that it was badly hit by the protests all over the country but still, the fall was very alarming as the film could only manage 1 crore in the second week taking two week total to 5crores approximately.

The third weekend started on Saturday and the film managed to collect approximately 30 lakhs on that day and Sunday was a bit lower than this. The film we believe is nearly ending its run and the total lifetime tally from Pakistan will be about 6 crores.

Similarly, even on the international front, Verna has not been able to collect much money. Territories like the UK and North America opened really slow which was sad given the film starred Mahira Khan and was directed by Shoaib Mansoor. The film has managed to collect around 4 cores and we think by the end of its run Verna might manage to amass about 10-11 crores globally which isn’t that great.

Just for comparison, Shoaib Mansoor’s directorial debut ‘Khuda Kay Liayay’ which released in 2007 had made about 8 cores domestically while his second film ‘Bol’ released in 2011 made 12 crores domestically with a worldwide gross about 17 crores. It was expected that Verna would cross 15 crores domestically and the worldwide gross would cross 20 crores given Mahira Khan’s rise to stardom over the years.

The producers might be saved by low costs of the film but overall it has been a failure and a major disappointment for all Shoaib Mansoor fans.
