Parchi’s trailer is out and it needs absolutely no ‘parchi’ to shine through

Ever since its teaser was released a few months back, there has been a great anticipation attached with upcoming, Hareem Farooq, Ali Rehman Khan, and Usman Mukhtar starer, Parchi. The trailer of the film (released yesterday), doesn’t at all, let that anticipation down.

https://www.facebook.com/galaxylollywood810/videos/1739129916132420/

Parchi’s genre is ‘action-comedy,’ and trailer delivers just that. Not only there is Jalaibee style action there, the colours and comedy in the film are also reminiscent of director Azfar Jafri’s last venture, Janaan. One can, perhaps, call it the typical ‘Azfar Jafri flavour.’

While Usman Mukhtar’s comic timing remains pitch-perfect throughout the three minute trailer, Hareem Farooq too, in her hot-header role of Madam Sahab looks refreshingly offbeat. Similarly, Ali Rehman Khan also departs significantly from his happy-go-lucky character image from Janaan, and puts on a lot more serious demenour, along with, of course, his organic comic flavour.

Although there isn’t much more to explore in the trailer character wise, but then trailers aren’t really meant for that. Having said that, Shafqat Cheema looks perfect in his villainous space of the film, and so does Ahmad Ali Akbar in his respective area. Same can be said for all other actors.

One downer of the trailer on a personal note, however, was that it gave away a little too much; the love triangle, the good lines, and some scenes that leave not much to imagination. This, at times, plays negatively when the actual film comes out and feels deprived of fresh substance. Still, we hope that people behind the film haven’t put all their best one-liners and scenes in the trailer, and have kept a lot more good stuff for the actual film as well, which releases on 5th of January 2018.

And how can we not talk about, Billo Hai. The song had managed to leave its mark even in the cramped little space of the trailer, but thanks to the Parchi-wallahs, who also released the entire dance number the same day. Choreographed by the versatile Osman Khalid Butt, the song, for once, manages to make the boys look good shaking their legs. High praises for the song overall.

Box Office: ‘Verna’ opens decently after braving censor turmoil

We cannot vouch for the authenticity of these box office numbers given by independent box office tracking site Box Office Detail. However, until we have some official box-office tracking system in Pakistan this is all we have got. The numbers are also revised at times and hence you may observe fluctuations.

It was not a smooth sail for Shoaib Mansoor’s highly-anticipated Mahira Khan starer ‘Verna’. But, despite enduring censor turmoil and release uncertainty, the film, finally, made it to cinemas all across the country on due date with little hiccup. In Punjab it could only be released in the night after getting the clearance certificate, hence missing some of the key shows in afternoon/evening.

‘Maan Jao Naa’ trailer reveals youthful & vibrant rom-com with catchy music

The vibrant and colorful trailer of youth-based rom-com, Maan Jao Naa, is out, and honestly speaking, it looks much better than what we expected after seeing its posters few weeks ago.

Maan Jao Naa is the second film by The Crew Films, the makers of critically acclaimed ‘Dukhtar’. It is pole apart from their first venture, which was a social-issue based movie. But, their taking on romantic comedy seems a clean family entertainer, as far as it looks from the trailer. It can help the film in attracting families and youth both – the winning combo to guarantee box office success.

The highlight of the film is, definitely, German-born Iranian beauty Naaz Norouzi, who is debuting at the cinema after featuring in plethora of fashion world’s leading brands. Naaz is looking stunning in the trailer. Although her accent might be a put-off to language fanatics, but she is giving refreshing vibes to the film. On top of that, she can dance well too. Hopefully, she will be able to win our hearts in the film with her acting skills as well.

Also read: The leading lady of rom-com ‘Maan Jao Naa’ is Iranian beauty Naaz Norouzi!

From the outlook, Maan Jao Naa seems a story about bunch of fun-loving friends, with a twist of conventional love triangle (or rectangle) in it. But, the trailer does not reveal much about the story and the dynamics of the characters. We surely need to wait to watch the film to get an idea of it.

Another attraction of the film is its catchy music, especially the male-voiced remix of Naheed Akktar’s classic popular song ‘Bijli Bhari Hai’. The original song was filmed on Lollywood’s one of the most famous dancers, Mumtaz, in movie ‘Koshish’. Besides, ‘Rang Laga’ also sounds entertaining and potential party anthem. We are looking forward to the soundtrack to come out soon.

Now, lets talk about few major things which did not impress us much in the trailer. On top of the list is the film’s male lead, Adeel Chauhdry, who sounds too loud and expressionless in parts of the trailer. The film also looks weak in the department of dialogues, the most crucial factor behind success of a comedy movie. (Although, we hope that the special appearance of Ali Gul Pir will make up for it.)

But, its too early to judge. So, we need to keep fingers crossed. As, overall, the trailer has intrigued us sufficiently and it looks a well-made film – much better than other similar rom-coms released in last couple of years and failed miserably.

Lastly, it would be a delight to see 80s national crush, Asif Raza Mir, after long on the silver screen. As his son, Ahad Raza Mir, keeps conquering the hearts on the small screen before debuting at the silver screen in Parwaaz Hai Junoon, we are rooting for the senior enchanter for recreating his magic in Maan Jao Naa.

The film is directed by Aabis Raza and co-written by Asma Nabeel and Ahsan Raza Firdousi. The cast of the film includes Adeel Chaudhary, Naaz Nourozi, Ayaz Sammo, Hajra Yamin, Naeem Haque and Ali Gul Pir. The film will hit cinemas on Feb 2, 2018.

Fresh from the sets: Director Shoaib Khan wraps up shoot for upcoming film ‘Jackpot’

Last week, team Galaxy Lollywood dropped by the sets of upcoming film ‘Jackpot’ in Lahore where the shooting of the last spell was on. We talked to the cast and crew to get some inside scoop on the film, and here is what we found out:

1.The shoot has been wrapped up

Director Shoaib Khan told us that this was the last spell of the film and other than some patchwork the shoot for the film is complete . It’s worth mentioning that an earlier spell was shot in Thailand at some rather picturesque locations.

2. Releasing in early 2018

With the film in post-production now, the makers are in talks with distributors on how to take things forward. The film it seems will release sometime next year but the exact date is yet to be announced. There will be a poster launch event on the eve of New Years where more information will be revealed.

3. The film is an outright entertainer

When we asked the leads of the film Noor Hassan and Sanam Chaudhry what made them sign the dotted line they both reiterated the fact that the film was an outright entertainer and that the audiences will love it. It is a comedy thriller and has a bunch of characters, interlinked to each other, who are all running after this lottery ticket. The entire film is one fun-filled ride which takes the characters places as they try to get their hands on the ticket.

4. The ensemble cast is a winner

The cast of the film is a healthy mix of newbies and veterans where on one hand we have debutants Inayat Khan and Reyhana Malhotra, on the other hand, we have Javed Sheikh, Ismail Tara and Adnan Shah Tipu. Also, how can we forget Lollywood diva Sana who will be seen acting in a film after quite some time.Add to that popular faces of television, Noor Hassan and Sanam Chaudhry to the mix and you have a winner!

5. Music is another plus point

The music of is done by Naveed Nashad and the album has five tracks in total of which two are romantic songs and three will be fun peppy dance numbers. The songs have been sung by Amanat Ali, Beena Khan, Asim Azhar and Ashfan Fawad so we can expect some melodious numbers.

While you wait for more details, you can enjoy the beautiful teasers that came out earlier this year.

Why the Verna ban situation is actually a blessing in disguise for the film

First things first, the film has not been banned as of yet!

On the contrary, the film has actually been cleared by the Punjab and Sindh censor board and only a certificate is yet to be issued. The Central Board based in Islamabad is the only one who has yet to clear the film and that is because at the initial five-member screening all members unanimously felt the film was unfit for public viewing, so the full board will re-watch the film tonight and give the final verdict.

Here it is worth mentioning that post the 18th amendment the three boards are autonomous bodies and can give out different verdicts and a film can release in one province while not in the other. But with a high profile Pakistani film which apparently has irked quite a few government officials the other two censor boards probably want to be on the same page with the Central Board and hence are waiting for the board’s verdict.

Nonetheless, coming back to the main point and how this ban situation is a blessing in disguise for the film. Ever since the news of the ‘ban’ was first made public it has triggered this almost maniacal response from the audiences. Verna is trending on Twitter, Facebook is full of statuses where heated debates are taking place on the news. All in all the film has become a talking point and has piqued the curiosity of the audiences something which was earlier missing, despite the crazy promotions that the team was doing.

For whatever reasons, up until yesterday, the film hadn’t really generated the kind of hype as was expected from a Mahira Khan- Shoaib Mansoor film which was evident from the talk within the trade. However, this ban has generated quite the buzz for the film and once the film gets cleared by the Central Board this will only to translate into more tickets and a thunderous opening at the box office this Friday.

But while we are fairly optimistic that the film will be cleared for screening, Industry insiders are sharing their reservations that the Central Board is bent on banning the film as the film paints a picture of Pakistan which the officials deem negative and feel the content is objectionable. Anyhow, we truly hope that this entire issue settles down and the film releases this Friday and we get to see the third film from the maestro who in the past gave us memorable films like ‘Bol’ and ‘Khuda Kay Liyay’.

All the best Team Verna, we are rooting for you, as is all of Pakistan!

The Maula Jatt Madness: Will the real copyright holder please stand up?

Maula Jatt copyright controversy

Maula Jatt has been in the news ever since Bilal Lashari first announced his plans of remaking the cult classic and paying homage to the original film. Bilal’s version of the film is in production with a tentative 2018 release but the film is in some trouble as the original producers of Maula Jatt aren’t too excited about this new version. Legal notices have been served, much has been said and the film is in the news for all the wrong reasons. But when and how did this begin and who is the real copyright holder of the film? Let’s find out!

Maula Jatt-Poster

Released in 1979, Maula Jatt was a blockbuster which spawned multiple sequels both official and unofficial and somehow became the first unofficial Lollywood franchise centered around Sultan Rahi and Mustafa Qureshi who played the protagonist Maula and antagonist Noorie.

In December 2013, Bilal Lasari who was riding high on the success of his directorial debut ‘Waar’, announced his plans of rebooting the film. It was revealed that Bilal’s version of the film would be a visual epic, with less dialogue and many captivating moments. It would be his take on the gandasa culture but would stay true to the original and be in Punjabi.

Nasir Adeeb and Bilal Lashari

In 2014 it was made public that veteran writer Nasir Adeeb, writer of the original Maula Jatt film, its prequel Wehshi Jatt and sequel Maula Jatt in London, was on board with Bilal Lashari and would be writing the dialogues of the remake. It is worth mentioning that writer Nasir Adeeb had adapted the original films from a short story Gandasa written by Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi.

Sarwar Bhatti

Producer of  Maula Jatt, Sarwar Bhatti, wasn’t happy with this development and warned the makers that what they were doing was illegal and it was he who had the rights to the film! Another little fun fact: Sarwar Bhatti only produced Maula Jatt while the other two films had different producers.

Bilal was unaffected by the claims and believed he was legally covered as Nasir Adeeb, the writer of the Maula Jatt films, was a part of their team and that he had the right to the films. But Sarwar Bhatti retorted “Nasir Adeeb worked as a script-writer for me and he was paid for that; he cannot claim ownership of the Maula Jatt franchise.”

Okay, I know it just got a bit confusing so here is a pointer version of the Maula Jatt history:

  • Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi wrote a short story Gandasa.
  • Nasir Adeeb adapted it for the silver screen and wrote a film Wehshi Jatt, released in 1975, where he collaborated with producer Azeem Malik and director Hassan Askari. This is the first time that Maula and Noorie made an appearance on the silver screen.
  • Nasir Adeeb then wrote another film Maula Jatt, released in 1979, also adapted from the original short story, while this time he collaborated with producer Sarwar Bhatti and director Younus Malik. The film was a blockbuster and sort of began an unofficial franchise centered around Maula and Noorie played by Sultan Rahi and Mustafa Qureshi.
  • An official sequel Maula Jatt in London, released in 1981, written by Nasir Adeeb, produced by Shaan Mustafa and directed by Younis Malik was made. This is the only official sequel where the writer-director duo of Maula Jatt was present and the story continues from where it ended in Maula Jatt.
  • Following the success of Maula Jatt, dozens of films starring Sultan Rahi and Mustafa Qureshi were made. Now while these films were officially no sequels as such but the presence of the two main actors playing some variation of the original role along with the same formula of honor, violence, and bharak meant box office success. Goes without saying that these films had different producers, writers, and directors.
Maula Jatt- The Original Three

The crux of all this history is that Nasir Adeeb created the characters which were produced as films by three different producers!

Cut to  January 2017. The film is in production. Ammara Hikmat is on board as the producer and somewhere along the way it was revealed that Fawad Khan and Hamza Ali Abbasi are playing the iconic characters. But it was us at Galaxy Lollywood who exclusively revealed the complete cast for this mega film where Mahira Khan and Humaima Malick are the leading ladies (had to throw that in).

Maula Jatt 2.0- The Cast

Also, Bilal Lashari revealed via a facebook status that the film is neither a sequel nor a remake. It is not ‘Maula Jatt 2’ and the original title will soon be announced.

Cut to present and claim by the original Maula Jatt producer Sarwar Bhatti that the sequel producers can’t use the name of the movie, music, and characters without getting prior approval from him. They served legal notices to the cast of the film and want the cast to disassociate themselves from a project which they term is illegal!

Bahoo Sarwar

We called Bahoo Sarwar, son of producer Sarwar Bhatti, and questioned him on how they produced one film in the Maula Jatt series, but claim to have rights over the characters and title. To which he replied that it was his father Sarwar Bhatti who came up with the original idea of the film, created the character of Noorie Natt and that more than ninety percent of the film has been written by his father not writer Nasir Adeeb. He also told us that they have the certificate of Intellectual Property Organisation issued by IPO-Federal Government Pakistan.

Nasir Adeeb

With this additional information, we called up Nasir Adeeb, the writer of the film and wanted his take on the matter. He told us that the matter was in court but the producers need to realize that while they might have the rights to the film it is he who has the rights to the characters he created. He further elaborated and touched upon the same point which we discussed above that he has used his characters in various films produced by different producers.

Ammara Hikmat

We also talked to producer Ammara Hikmat who is the force behind the new mega-budget film in production. She reassured us that if she was investing so heavily in a project she obviously would have sorted out the basics first. She replied and said that the malicious claims made by Sarwar Bhatti are false and frivolous and that instead of commenting on this issue in media, she will take appropriate legal action against him.

To get a better insight into the matter we also talked to a few film people.

Omair Alavi

Journalist Omair Alavi who has co-written animated series Tick Tock believes that the rights of the film belong to the producer. “I have written Tock Tock but the final say is of the producer because the producer pays the writer and not the other way around. The rights of Maula Jatt are indeed with the producers. But Bilal has mentioned that Maula Jatt is just a working title so he might not even be touching the original film which renders the entire issue pointless”

Another industry insider on condition of anonymity said that the producer Sarwar Bhatti is just acting pricey. An official remake of Maula Jatt was released in 1981 and the producer had no issue with it being made because he knew he couldn’t make anything off it. Now he knows that a mega-budget film is being made and he can make some quick money! It’s all bullshit!

To sum it up we believe that this new film produced by Ammara Hikmat and directed by Bilal Lashari is a reboot which will be using the original characters written by Nasir Adeeb in a different context and in no way be a remake of the original film. The original producer needs to understand this and realize that they have the right to the film and not the characters. We hope that both the parties make peace and that the film moves ahead without any more controversies.

Arth Trailer: Bow down minions, for the king has arrived!

The king is back, and how!

It would not be wrong to say that when we talk about superstars in Pakistan there are not many names that make the cut, and if we narrow the list to film based superstars well the list gets even shorter. But there is one man who for almost three decades has consistently been topping this list and that is Lollywood’s original superstar Shaan Shahid who is ready to prove yet again why he is a force to be reckoned with as his next venture Arth releases this December.

The trailer for this film released a few days ago and we are in awe of what we saw on the screen. Directed by Shaan Shahid the film stars Shaan himself, Mohib Mirza, Humaima Malik and Uzma Hassan in leading roles and is a retelling of the original ‘Arth’. What that means is that it is not a sequel or a reboot but it just tells the story from a different vantage point. Kind of like if there was another ‘Punjab Nahi Jaungi’ which told the same story from mischievous Durdana’s point of view and focused on what was going on in her life when the drama as we saw it was unfolding on the silver screen.

Arth marks Shaan’s comeback to the director’s seat after his last ‘Zill-e-Shah’, which released in 2009, and going by the trailer Shaan has left no stone unturned to make sure that this film is on everyone’s must-watch list. From the breathtaking cinematography to the beautifully written characters ( although we wish we got to see more of Mohib and Humaima in the trailer) the film is probably the first hardcore romantic drama which shows the real side of romance and not the fairy tale version we generally see. Add to that the music by Sahir Ali Bagga and this one looks like a winner already.

What we particularly liked about the trailer was the fact that it actually looked like a film and the credit goes Shaan’s expertise as a film-maker and the fact that all the four leads are actors who have been choosy with their work and haven’t been over-exposed with dramas, commercials. The result of this all was a trailer which was actually an experience in itself and has us desperately waiting for trailer number two to arrive as sources reveal that Shaan is working on another cut which will soon be out.

Till then enjoy the original trailer and let us know what you think

Verna Trailer: The haunting trailer featuring a badass Mahira Khan makes this one a must watch!

The trailer for Verna is out and boy are we counting days to the release of the film or what! The Shoaib Mansoor directorial stars Mahira Khan and Haroon Shahid in lead and roles and having seen the trailer we can already feel the intensity that this social drama film will bring to the screens.

While the trailer may come across as a bit incoherent but I believe by doing so it succeeds in keeping the suspense factor alive because trailers nowadays almost reveal the entire plot of the film. Also, Shoaib Mansoor is known to have such cryptic trailers which let you in on the theme but not what the film is all about.

The main highlight of the trailer is without a doubt Mahira Khan and this badass, never before seen, avatar of hers where she is a woman on a mission avenging some wrong that has been done to her. The different shades to her character make it all the more fun! The boys Haroon Shahid and Zarrar Khan also seem like perfect fits for the role and add value to the film.

Shoaib Mansoor has a history of making films where he so seamlessly interweaves the message alongside the entertainment and this one looks no different. We cannot wait to see what the man, who changed the game with his directorial debut Khuda Kay Liye in 2007, will offer this time.

The film releases November 17, here is the trailer if you haven’t yet seen it

Iss Censor Kou Karo Censor

One of the two Pakistani releases this Eid-ul-Azha, Na Maloom Afraad 2, recently went through an episode of getting banned and eventually unbanned by Punjab film censor board. The official notification for the reason of ban states ‘persistent complaints by different quarters’ for the decision, while few independent reports call it the consequence of not being reviewed by the full board earlier.

The truth may lie somewhere in between, but we may never find it for real. The impact of such an action, however, is a real concern. A movie which provides entertainment for around a month and rakes in some twenty crores in business after being initially cleared, suddenly must face a ban, face a life-cut in its ever so short life, and then most importantly face a negative publicity, only to be unbanned few days later with all that baggage. What sort of message are we giving to the potential investors for an industry that is still pretty much in its infancy?

Before the historic 18th amendment, Censor board worked on this structure: Central Board of Film Censors based in Islamabad had two provincial branches, one based in Punjab, and one in Sindh. Local producers having obtained film clearance from the provincial boards could only exhibit the film in that respective province. For issuing a nationwide certification and exhibition, only the central board had the authority, in addition to its monopolistic authority of censoring foreign films, and films from KPK.

Post-18th amendment, however, the central board’s powers have been reduced only to the Capital Territory, while it keeps on censoring the films from KPK in the absence of such a board there to this date. The provincial boards have now been made autonomous and empowered to the extent of censoring foreign films too now. The autonomy, however, remains controversial as in various cases they have been noticed of still taking line from Islamabad (case in point being, Maalik.)

Moreover, with this new structure, there is almost always an issue of delayed process of advance booking for every film, as movies are passed on Thursday nights, leaving cinemas almost no time to set movie timings or sell tickets in advance.

Certification contradiction between “vulgarity,” and violence also exists as movies with “Skin Show” are considered suitable for the ‘Adult Only’ audience, while violence is considered suitable for all. A movie like Ram-leela, for instance, after being heavily censored was released with an ‘Adult certificate,’ but a film like Expendables, which was given an ‘Adult certificate’ worldwide was released with a ‘suitable for all’ certificate in Pakistan. Punjab can be considered the worst in this certification business.

As discussed earlier, banning of movies is another issue. While some cases can be considered genuine, like those of Baby, Phantom, and Ek Tha Tiger, but then there has been a case of Maalik, which was simply banned for reasons nobody understood, and was later reinstated in cinemas, proving how wrong the original decision was.

The debut movie of Arjun Kapoor, Ishaqzaade, released in 2012, too was banned in Pakistan, for apparently the reason that the leads were Muslims, while not even a single thing was against Pakistan in the movie. Similar was the case of Sonam Kapoor’s Raanjhanaa.

Sharukh-Mahira starrer, Raees, too couldn’t release in Pakistan as it was sent to tribunal for further checking even though five out of six members were happy with the content and only one wasn’t, while the rules say that if four clear the movie, it is good to go. Such absurdities hardly ever get commented on by the censor brigade.

At times, it has also been noticed that English movies like, Hansel & Gratel, American Hustle, and Hangover 3, get cleared with nude scenes being present in them, surprising everyone to what actually is the clearance criteria of the censor board.

The cuts given also, at times, are too absurd to say the least, for instance in one scene in Dangal, producers were asked to remove the National Anthem from the film, whereas, those who have watched it uncut would understand how that scene forms the essence of the entire movie. And hello! Indian national anthem gets played in “IPL” too, which by the way gets broadcast live on our local channels.

The different censor boards, in my suggestion, should all unite and adopt the central system of clearance certification, bringing more pace to the process. Movies against the national interest should definitely be barred, but political and influential pressures on such decisions should stop once and for all for the sake of good entertainment.

Censors should be more responsible and look out for the cinema industry. Decisions should be made keeping everything in mind like, national interest, investment protection, movie context, and other such factors. Only then would the censor boards be fulfilling their true purpose.

Verna’s teaser out! Mahira Khan wins this round of ‘Power Di Game’

The anticipation for Shoaib Mansoor’s upcoming film, Verna, is simply non-parallel to any other film. Although, merely the name, Shoaib Mansoor, is enough to credit this phenomenon, but the presence of Mahira Khan as the film’s lead, subject of the movie, and the reports about film’s soundtrack, among other things, all contribute to this excitement.
