Box Office Update (Day 4): ‘Yalghaar’ and ‘Mehrunisa V Lub U’ both continue running steadily!

Eid holidays are over and both films, ‘Yalghaar’ and ‘Mehrunisa V Lub U’, are holding their positions with nominal dips. Usually a significant drop is expected after holidays, but the films are performing well, which bodes well for Eid releases. Despite Thursday being workday, both films held well and continued to run steadily.

Box Office Update (Day 3): ‘Yalghaar’ and ‘Mehrunisa V Lub U’ both hold their positions!

Eid holidays of three days ended on an auspicious note for ‘Yalghaar’ and ‘Mehrunisa V Lub U’, as both films emerge as winners on the box office.

The third day of Eid remained relatively less buzzy than Day 2. Both films saw a drop on Day 3, as it was expected on the last public holiday. But, despite a nominal fall, both films held their positions steadily and continued to run houseful in cinemas across the country.

Mehrunisa V Lub U

‘Mehrunisa V Lub U’, which saw stupendous growth of 60% on Day 2, dropped by just 20% on last holiday. The film raked in approximately 1.4 crore on Day 3, taking its three day collections to 4.25 crore. This is really impressive for the film facing a cut-throat competition with more popular movie ‘Yalghaar’.

Here is the breakdown of three-day collections of ‘Mehrunisa V Lub U’.

  • Day 1 (Monday): 1.10 crore
  • Day 2 (Tuesday): 1.75 crore
  • Day 3 (Wednesday): 1.40 crore
  • Total: 4.25 crore approx.

Yalghaar

Yalghaar held a strong position since the get-go and same is true for the third day as well. The film added approximately 2.20 crore on Day 3, with a very minor drop of just 10%. It brings its three day collections to whopping 6.35 crore. The film emerges as a winner on Eid, leaving behind the other release by a huge margin (~35%).

Here is the breakdown of three-day collections of ‘Yalghaar’.

  • Day 1 (Monday): 1.75 crore
  • Day 2 (Tuesday): 2.40 crore
  • Day 3 (Wednesday): 2.20 crore
  • Total: 6.35 crore approx.

The Eid holidays are over and the next two days will be slower for the films. The real test will come in coming weekend and the week following it. We are hearing about both films doing well on Thursday as well, despite its a working day and sporadic rains are falling across the country.

All the best to both films! 🙂

We visited the largest multiplex of Pakistan and here’s our experience!

Last week team Galaxy Lollywood paid a visit to Universal Cinemas Lahore, which happens to be the largest multiplex in Pakistan with a whopping nine screens! Furthermore, the cinema also has the largest screen in Pakistan (which trumps the IMAX screen) and it has two of them! We went there to check out how the cinema actually is and here’s our experience.

8:50pm

We made our way to the cinemas which are located in Emporium Mall Lahore. Entered the beautifully designed lobby which was definitely one of the best ones we’ve seen in a long time. Loved the edgy futuristic blue theme.

9:00pm

Given that the cinema had 9 screens this meant quite a few movie options, so we decided to split up. Two of us went to the Ultra Screen ( the biggest screen) and geared up to see ‘Mummy’ while the third member went to see ‘Raabta’ in the relatively smaller screen.

9:05pm

We got seated in the Ultra Screen and oh boy, the screen was definitely big! The seats were super comfy recliners with ample leg space and the perfect viewing angles. Before the film began, trailer of Pakistani film ‘Yalghaar’ played and I couldn’t help but go gaga over how visually stunning the film looked on this screen. I had seen the film a few days back at its premiere in Islamabad on a rather tiny screen and seeing the film on the Ultra Screen felt like I was seeing .a completely different film. I couldn’t help but wonder how amazing the experience would have been had I seen the film here.

9:10pm

Some more trailers and then the demo video for Dolby Atmos played which reassured that we were going to get the best movie experience courtesy the Atmos 3D Sound.

9:30pm

The film was playing and we were definitely immersed into the film courtesy the picture quality and sound. The film ‘Mummy’ seemed twice as much fun courtesy the super huge screen and sound.

11:00pm

After our film ended we thought we would explore the cinema a bit and Mr. Wahid Imran, Assistant Operations Manager, showed us around. We visited the Gold Cinemas which has 2 screens with recliner sofas and a cozy homely environment for people who don’t like the cinema rush. These screens also had their private entrance, lobby and a cafe. Given the smaller screen size, this was not what a hardcore cinema lover would appreciate but for people wanting privacy and comfort, this is your go to screen.

11:15pm

We took a few photos here and there and left the cinema promising ourselves that this where we would be seeing all movies now!

Here are some details about the cinema which you might find useful.

Box Office Update (Day 2): ‘Yalghaar’ and ‘Mehrunisa V Lub U’ both grow stronger!

The second day of Eid was the real test of ‘Yalghaar’ and ‘Mehrunisa V Lub U’ and both films qualified it with flying colors.

Both the films opened to packed houses, registering an impressive debut, and grew stronger on the second day of release. The films continued to go housefuls in cinemas across the country on Eid Day 2 as well and witnessed commendable growth on the second day.

Box Office Update (Day 1): ‘Yalghaar’ and ‘Mehrunisa V Lub U’ both open to packed houses!

Finally, a box office update this year where we have something good to share.

While the first half of 2017 hasn’t been that great, Eid has provided some box office relief which the Pakistani Film Industry desperately needed. Both the films have opened to packed houses and the numbers have been encouraging.

As per estimates ‘Yalghaar’ has raked in 1.75 crore whereas ‘Mehrunisa V Lub U’ has collected 1.1 crore. These numbers are exceptionally good considering how other films like ‘Balu Mahi’, ‘Chalay Thay Saath’ etc have had a total box office run of less than 3 crore.

FYI the biggest day 1 at the box office in Pakistan is by Bollywood biggie ‘Sultan’ which raked in 3.5 crore plus on its first day.

Stay tuned to Galaxy Lollywood for all updates.

Yalghaar (Review): A star-studded hot mess!

Movie Name: Yalghaar

Release Date: June 25, 2017

Director: Hassan Waqas Rana

Review by: Momin Ali Munshi

Touted as the biggest film to ever come out of Pakistan, Yalghaar pays homage to the brave soldiers of our country by showing what all actually happens during a military operation and how it affects not only those involved but their families. The film boasts of a mega-budget, has the ISPR backing and an envious star cast (Shaan Shahid and Humayun Saeed together is definitely a casting coup). However, all that glitters is not gold and this holds true for the ambitious film which on paper though may have it all, but in reality, fails to impress and ends up being a disappointment.

When the film opens we are right in the middle of the action as we see Col Asad (Shaan Shahid) leading a mission alongside Capt Bilal (Bilal Ashraf), Capt Umair (Umair Jaswal) and a few others. These first twenty minutes or so are wonderfully executed and definitely set the right motion for the film. Then as the film progresses we’re introduced to a plethora of characters including the baddie Humayun Saeed and the film slowly drags towards the climax with an emotional last twenty minutes.

Now for a film that has so many written characters, it was obviously going to be a challenge for the director to do justice to all of them and this is where first timer Hassan Waqas Rana stumbles. All the characters appear one-dimensional (barring Shaan and Humayun to some extent) with weak or non-existent backstories further alienating the viewers.  Humayun is bad for the sake of being bad and you never really get a justification for his actions. Shaan Shahid’s character has somewhat of a layer courtesy the Sana Bucha track filled with the artiness. But generally, there is no depth to the characters which definitely takes away from their performances.

Performance wise almost everyone puts up a good show. I was particularly taken aback after seeing Bilal Ashraf and Armeena Rana Khan who both have improved tremendously post their last film ‘Janaan’ ( although I think both films were shot at the same time).  Shaan Shahid underplays the role to some extent but with the kind of screen presence he has he just needs to appear on the screen and the job is half done. Humayun Saeed I believe has been miscast in the role of Torjan for whatever he does, you just don’t hate him! He performs well with a rather impactful monologue towards the ends but Humayun as the baddie did not work for me. Sana Bucha definitely stole the show with a powerful debut performance. Yes, she was playing a journalist so it was a home ground for her but nonetheless she looked stunning and left an impact.

Ayesha Omar and Gohar Rasheed suffered the most from bad writing but nonetheless, they shine bright in whatever little capacity they can. Adnan Siddiqui is wasted and except for one last scene at the battlefield, he has nothing much to offer. The other ladies Uzma Khan, Aleeze Naseer, time Atiya Khan are just there to fill in the slots for the army wives/love interests. Umair Jaswal and Ali Rehman Khan are hardly seen and one wonders why would they even agree to do a blink and miss kind of a role. Debutants Ahmad Taha Ghani and Naeem Haque do well and both the characters stay with the audiences. It was interesting to note that Ahmad’s share of screen time was almost as much as that of Shaan or Bilal Ashraf despite him being a stock character added for comic relief! Not that Ahmad did bad, but it would have made more sense to have Ali Rehman do this character especially since he had wowed everyone with his comic timing in ‘Janaan’.

Moving on to the writing of the film, the less said the better. There is no easy way of saying this but the film has no story! When ‘Waar’ came out in 2013 the biggest complaint I had was that it was a collection of wonderfully shot scenes without much coherence. Well, now that I compare this film to ‘Waar’ and I do that because obviously, it was ‘Waar’ which inspired then producer/ screenwriter Hassan Waqas Rana to take up the director’s role, this one, unlike the predecessor, has absolutely no trace of a story. It’s just scene and sequences put together to make a film!

There is the action sequence, some romance, comedy, another action scene and so on. While the romantic tracks were endearing and showed the human side of the army the comedy which was in the form of punches and dialogues was extremely forced and did not evoke any laughter! Yes, we get that the director wanted to provide some comic relief but when in the middle of a war sequence you crack a joke it does seem misplaced. And when that happens every 15 minutes and a pattern emerges it just gets annoying!

Directing, writing and producing a film is definitely not an easy job and somewhere Hassan Waqas Rana couldn’t juggle the three jobs. Also, he had an acting role in the film, so that didn’t make things easier for him. Furthermore, I don’t get the fascination with the English language. Yes, ‘Waar’ worked at the box office but that’s for many other reasons, I hope we let go of our fancy with the language after this one.

Talking about the music, the background score of ‘Yalghaar’ is well put and the songs aren’t bad either with ‘Yaad Na Awien’ still on my mind. However the other number ‘Nahi Milta’  featuring Armeena and Bilal Ashraf was not only average at best but was rather awkwardly placed too. While Hassan Waqas Rana definitely had his heart in the right place and wanted the average cinemagoer to know what goes on in an army man’s life but a poor development of the idea resulted in a mediocre end product.

It’s a ‘Waar’ sequel you never asked for!

Back in 1990, when Bulandi released, who knew that the film would give Pakistani Cinema an actor who over the course of next few years would establish himself as a force to be reckoned with, and emerge as a true blue superstar.

Shaan Shahid- an actor, writer, director, and above all, a perfect ambassador for Pakistani Cinema. He’s been a part of the industry for 26 years now, and to stay relevant for such a long period of time, he must be doing something right, right?

We met the actor on the sets of his next film ‘Zarrar,’ and here are excerpts from quite a candid conversation about his upcoming films and the Karachi vs Lahore debate among other things. Read on.

‘Na Maloom Afraad 2’ trailer offers comedy, action and lots of masala

The trailer of ‘Na Maloom Afraad 2’ took the internet by storm when it released two days ago. The crisply edited high-octane trailer gives preview of what is in store in the second installment of the comedy franchise. It effortlessly succeeds in getting eyeballs by offering plenty of humor, action and masala – perfect ingredients for a potential winner.

The dynamic duo of Nabeel Qureshi and Fizza Ali Meerza has earned a big name in short time by giving two hits back-to-back. Their first film ‘Na Maloom Afraad’ had some serious issues, which they greatly improved on in the second film, ‘Actor in Law’. The trailer of ‘Na Maloom Afraad 2’ clearly shows the director-producer duo has upped their game and is ready to rule the box office, again.

Action, bots, and darkness dominate the ‘Project Ghazi’ Trailer

The trailer of one of the most anticipated Pakistani movies, Project Ghazi is finally out. Starring Humayun Saeed, Shehryar Munawar, Syra Shehroz, Adnan Jaffer, and Talat Hussain, and directed by Nadir Shah, the film releases on 14th July 2017.
