Raasta (Review): One man show gone awry!

Movie Name: Raasta

Release Date: March 31, 2017

Director: Sahir Lodhi

Review by: Momin Ali Munshi

Raasta is a Sahir Lodhi film.

The reason I say this is because not only has he acted in the film but he has also written and directed the film. So, basically, the three main pillars on which a film rests are all Mr. Lodhi and hence making or breaking the film is almost solely dependant on the capabilities of Sahir and Sahir alone.

Will Chalay Thay Saath end the dry spell in Pakistani cinema?

With there being no single hit film, the past few months have not been great for the Pakistan film industry. A total of 4 major releases; Thora Jee Le, Balu Mahi, Whistle, and Raasta, out of which Balu Mahi and Raasta were expected to standout, but failed.

Rangreza’s item number to feature Gohar Rasheed and transgenders

Even if you are not a fan of item numbers, you are absolutely going to love this one. Amir Mohiuddin’s upcoming musical-romance flick carries a bombshell of a song, featuring a performance of Gohar Rasheed alongwith more than a hundred transgenders.

“I’m certainly doing an item number and that too with transgenders. And I would love to mention how an absolutely wonderful experience it has been for me to shoot an entire dance sequence with such amazing people,” Gohar tells HIP.

Further on, Gohar said, “I was told in the narration that there will be an item number with the transgenders and I was absolutely game.”

The mentalities long locked and webbed are being broken for good now, as this diverse song is being made to initiate tolerance and acceptance of differences, dissimilarities and diversity.

“Everyone who is behind the song, the director, the composer and even the choreographer was eager to take this initiative. The idea behind including transgenders for an item number was to generate acceptance. We want to change the perception of the society and show them the positive side of these people,” says Gohar Rasheed.

Gohar further shares that his experience working with this particular dance team has been nothing but amazing. Narrating an incident, he shared, “one day I was feeling really down after a long day of shoot and all of them just surrounded me, cracking jokes in their typical language, teasing, ‘Haye Haye Gohar Bhai ap tu kitne handsome hain, yeh tu apki dewani hai,’ just to make me laugh and cheer me up.”

Seeing our industry taking such initiatives is super refreshing and remarkable.

So are you sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for this Urwa Hocane, Bilal Ashraf and Gohar Rasheed starrer to come out? Us too!

Box Office Update: ‘Raasta’ is on the brink of being done and dusted

Its almost over for Sahir Lodhi’s ‘Raasta’.

‘Raasta’ opened to lackluster response on 31 March and went downhill all the way. Now after 10 days of release, the film is drawing its last breath. As just handful of shows are scheduled for ongoing week, it is safe to say that it will hardly survive the second week before it is done and dusted.

As per unconfirmed, unverified sources, ‘Raasta’ has collected around 5.7 million (57 lac) so far in the run of 10 days. According to the prior report, its opening collections were close to 2.0 million (20 lac). Given that the film could add only 3.7 millions into its kitty after the dismal opening.

Award show hosting to brands endorsement, Hareem Farooq ups her game

Establishing herself expeditiously in this industry by giving powerful performances in plays like, Diyar-e-Dil, Sanam, Dusri biwi, and Mausam, among others, she went on to become a successful producer and gave us a hit that is, Janaan. Yes, you guessed it right. We’re, indeed, talking about the dynamic Dobara Phir Se actress, Hareem Farooq.

Syed Noor’s directorial comeback ‘Chein Aye Na’ releasing on 21st July!

The veteran film director Syed Noor gave many hits in last four decades, including one of the highest grossers ‘Choorian’ which stayed at the top slot for fifteen years. The director of multiple hits is now returning to the silver screen after 4-year hiatus with his next directorial venture ‘Chein Aye Na’.

The film was announced earlier this year and has been in production since then. The fast-tracked project now got its release date. It will hit the cinemas on 21st July, 2017.

That’s very good sign for Pakistani cinemas as more and more films are lining up for the release. ‘Chein Aye Na’ will release a month after Eid-ul-Fitr, when at least three films are expected to hit the theaters including Jhol, Mehrunisa V Lub U and Geo Sar Utha Key.

‘Chein Aye Na’ is romantic drama, written and directed by Syed Noor. Young actors Shahroz Sabzvari and Sarish Khan are debuting as the lead pair in the film. Shahroz Sabzvari, son of Behroz Sabzvari, started his acting career on TV as a child star. Sarish Khan, granddaughter of Sabiha Khanum and Santosh Kumar, is the former Miss Pakistan USA.

The ensemble cast also includes Nadeem Baig, Atiqa Odho, Behroz Sabzwari, Mustafa Qureshi and Adil Murad.

Syed Noor has previously introduced many big stars, including Shaan Shahid and Reema Khan, to Lollywood. But for last many years he has been working with few actors in his close circle only. This time around he will launch two young actors on the silver screen, breaking the moratorium on providing platform to the fresh talent.

‘Chein Aye Na’ will also be Syed Noor’s first film since revival of cinema in Pakistan. A lot has changed in last few years. We had hits like Jawani Phir Nahi Aani, Actor in Law and Waar in this time. It will be interesting to see how old school Lollywood proves itself relevant to the new-age cinema and connects with the new generation.

Keep yourself restless and mark your calendar for ‘Chein Aye Na’.

Punjab Nahi Jaungi teaser: Does it live up to the hype?

So after a wait of what seems like ages, the teaser for Humayun Saeed’s ‘Punjab Nahi Jaungi’ was finally released earlier today. With a total run time of about sixty seconds, the teaser succeeds in giving us a clear picture of what to expect from the Nadeem Baig directorial: a full on masala film.

It opens with a haveli somewhere in Punjab and we see Humayun Saeed make his grand hero like entry. Then we get a sneak peak of the love triangle as Urwa Hocane and Mehwish Hayat make an appearance.  We also get glimpses of other actors like Ahmed Ali Butt, Azfar Rehman, and Sohail Ahmed before the teaser ends with the only dialogue exchange when Mehwish says ‘Main Punjab nahi jaungi’ to which Humayun Saeed replies, ‘Main marun ga to aana parey ga na tumhein?’ in a thick Punjabi accent.

Here are a few observations/pointers after having seen the teaser:

  • I haven’t seen television show ‘Dillagi’  which also featured Humayun Saeed, Mehwish Hayat and was directed by Nadeem Baig, so I can’t comment on the similar feel as lots of people seem to be saying. But I strongly feel that repeating television hit jodi’s for film is not a good idea as we are not yet out of the film looks like TVdrama phase.
  • Nadeem Baig has proved himself as a filmmaker with ‘Jawani Phir Nahi Ani’ and he all set to take things a few notches higher with this one. The film does look a bit Bollywood’s ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ but I guess a little inspiration never killed someone and its cool as long as the film feels Pakistani which it definitely does!
  • Humayun Saeed looks every bit the filmi hero which gets established from the entry sequence itself. Also seeing that Punjabi accent at the end, it will be a treat to see this new avatar of Humayun. Someone is going to prove the detractors wrong with his acting chops!
  • Urwa Hocane looks breathtakingly stunning in the film! Eastern wear is definitely her thing and I feel that this film will be a turning point in her career.
  • Mehwish Hayat looks beautiful but I’m #TeamUrwa.
  • Sohail Ahmed will impress with his act I feel, the first look was intense!

Here’s the teaser, the film will release Eid-ul-Azha.

The curious case of Hania Aamir and ‘Na Maloom Afraad 2’

Hania Aamir

Is Hania Aamir in it? Is she playing the leading role? Wait, wasn’t that Urwa? Is she doing a supporting role? What is she doing?

The Pandora’s box opened yesterday when Hania Aamir gave an interview to Dawn Images and claimed that she is all set to play the leading role in Nabeel Qureshi’s upcoming project, ‘Na Maloom Afraad 2.’ This statement of hers got everyone talking because just a few weeks back, Urwa Hocane had announced how she would be doing the film and would be reprising her role as the leading lady.

We talked to a few industry insiders to know more, but unfortunately, we have conflicting reports.

On one side we hear that Urwa Hocane will be playing more of an extended cameo which will see her continue her romantic track with Fahad Mustafa from the first film, but won’t see her in a prominent role, something that Bollywood actress Rimi Sen has been doing in the Dhoom series. But on the other side, sources also inform that Urwa Hocane has shot prominently for the first spell of the film in Karachi and will be a major part of the next spell in South Africa. So much of work from a cameo appearance, thus, seems strange.

We tried to reach Nabeel Qureshi for an official comment, but he is unwilling to reveal anything as of yet. So, looks like will have to wait and see who’s actually the leading lady of Na Maloom Afraad 2. But we would certainly wish the young actress, Hania Aamir all the best for bagging another big film. For those unaware she is currently also a part of film, ‘Parwaz Hay Junoon,’ opposite Hamza Ali Abbasi.

Javed Sheikh inks investment deal with Turkish Airlines for ‘Wajood’

Javed Sheikh’s name is synonymous with taking bold and brave steps to steer the film industry into new directions and exploring new horizons. A lot of firsts are to his credit including foraying into digital film making with ‘Yeh Dil Aap Ka Huwa’ (2002) in Pakistan. The veteran actor/director is now returning behind the camera after a hiatus of more than a decade and seems to have bigger plans for his next directorial venture ‘Wajood’.

As part of the plans, Javed Sheikh inked staggeringly impressive investment and facilitation deal with Turkish Airlines for his upcoming project ‘Wajood’. The deal’s announcement was made at the joint press conference on Friday, March 31st, 2017 by Javed Sheikh and General Manager Turkish Airlines, Fatih Atacan Temel in Karachi.

In the conference the details of the deal between Javed Sheikh Films and Turkish Airlines were shared. Javed Sheikh revealed that ‘Wajood’ stars actors not only from Pakistan but also from India and Turkey. He also shared that a large part of the film will be shot in Turkey, including few songs and some integral sections of the film.

The Turkish film production company Azat Films is also collaborating with Javed Sheikh Films in shooting the part of the film taking place in Turkey. Javed Sheikh told that total 45 scenes of the film will be shot at different locations in Turkey.

Turkish Airlines has previously sponsored only few Hollywood biggies, including ‘Batman vs. Superman’. ‘Wajood’ is the first South Asian film to bag such a deal with the world’s leading air carrier. This deal will open new horizons and change the face of the cinema in Pakistan. It will also help in strengthening the people to people relations between two nations.

Talking on the occasion Javed Sheikh told that the first trailer will be released after Eid-ul-Fitr, whereas the film will be released on Eid-al-Azha.

‘Wajood’ is an intense romantic thriller. The cast of the film includes Danish Taimoor, Saeeda Imtiaz and Aditi Singh (Telagu film star) in leading roles. The ensemble cast also features Ali Saleem, Frieha Altaf, Faiza Khan, Asad Mehmood, Shaheen Khan and the trio of veterans Nadeem Baig, Shahid and Javed Sheikh.
