Box Office Update: Surprise Surprise ‘Thora Jee Le’ has a strong opening weekend!

We cannot vouch for the authenticity of these box office numbers given by independent box office tracking site Box Office Detail. However, until we have some official box-office tracking system in Pakistan this is all we have got. Also, the numbers are revised at times and hence you may observe fluctuations.

The first release of 2017, Thora Jee Le, may not have had the critics approval but the box office tells a different story. The film starring a plethora of new faces has done rather well at the box office with the opening weekend collections coming out to be 25 lakhs.

Although this may not seem as a rather encouraging number in absolute terms but compare it to any of the recent releases and you will see that the film has struck gold. Here are a few numbers for comparison, Jeewan Hathi had a lifetime of 15 lakhs, Revenge Of The Worthless had a lifetime of 35 lakhs, multi starrer Teri Meri Love Story had a lifetime of 60 lakhs! So 25 lakhs in three days, for a film that has received a lot of backlash and features no prominent faces as such is definitely a win!

Moreover with low cinema footfalls, due to no Hindi films released in the past three months it definitely is a healthy sign to see such box office numbers ( although a large part of this has to be credited to the Deepika Padukone- Vin Diesel starrer XXX Return Of Xander Cage). Here’s hoping the film does well on weekdays as well, has a strong lifetime collection and paves way for other Pakistani films releasing soon.

The title of Ali Zafar’s debut film is revealed and it makes us excited!

Ali Zafar is finally debuting at the Pakistani cinema and the title of the film is just revealed.

The romantic action-comedy titled as ‘Teefa in Trouble’, will be produced by Lightingale Productions and mark the cinematic debut of ace music video and ad maker Ahsan Rahim.

Ali Zafar gave a sneak peek of the film script he received with a note signed off by director Ahsan Rahim urging him to start the training. It promises to be an action packed role with comedy.

The rest of the details are not known yet. We are waiting anxiously to know who will be paired opposite the handsome hunk.

Ali Zafar has done several movies in Bollywood, most recently Gauri Shinde’s Dear Zindagi, but he shied away from signing any film project in Pakistan until now. We hope this film will be worth the wait!

#TINT made us super excited!

‘Thora Jee Le’: First reactions from the Karachi Premiere are DISASTROUS!

So the first Pakistani release of 2017, Thora Jee Le, had its premiere last night in Karachi where the audiences got a chance to see the film which hits cinemas all over Pakistan today. While the premiere in itself seemed like a decent affair with quite a few prominent faces gracing the red carpet, not the same can be said for the reactions that are coming out.

Interestingly its the same film which had us rather excited and we even did a story giving ‘ 21 reasons to see the film’ ( READ HERE). But if the reviews from the audiences are something to go by, this film is is definitely a disappointment. Here are a few reactions:-

Prominent film critic Omair Alavi took to facebook to comment on the film. Here is a screenshot of what he said

Exclusive: In talk with Sabiha Sumar about her India-Pakistan documentary ‘Azmaish’ and the new-age cinema

Pakistan film industry is blessed with few gifted female filmmakers who time and again stun the world with their intellect, ingenuity, and courage of bringing difficult yet substantial stories to the screen. Be it Mehreen Jabbar or twice Oscar-winning director Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, these filmmakers never shy away from traversing the less traveled roads and uncovering the dark truths of the society.

Sabiha Sumar is an eminent name among these audacious filmmakers, who has been trying to find answers to the difficult questions in her films for last two decades.

The award-winning director of the critically acclaimed Khamosh Pani (2003), which starred artists from Pakistan and India including Kiran Kher and Arshad Mahmood, has been exploring the sociopolitical issues and impact of religious fundamentalism on society and particularly on women in her films since the beginning of her career.

The unstoppable Sumar is back with another documentary Azmaish: Trials of Life, starring alongside one of Bollywood’s most talented actresses of this generation, Kalki Koechlin. The documentary will give an account of the journey of two women traveling across Pakistan and India and trying to ferret out why people in both countries are turning to religious extremism.

This is a pernicious thing to dig out, not just on this side but also on the other side of the border where rapid shift towards religiosity is weakening the secular outlook of India.

Answering the question if she fears any backlash for it, Sabiha Sumar opens up with Galaxy Lollywood in an exclusive interview, “fear is not a good attribute for a filmmaker. And being fearless doesn’t mean stupidly falling in a trap. It’s a thin line. Living on edge is something a documentary filmmaker must get use to. (Although, it always feels like ohmygod! How will I get through this one!) But it’s good to remind oneself that you can get through tough situations. A creative journey is full of twists and turns and demands quick decisions”.

Azmaish comes 14 years after Khamosh Pani in which she traced the religious extremism during Zai-ul-Haq’s regime. The documentary seems part of the same quest, as Pakistan kept on suffering heavily from the home-grown terrorism through all these years.

She also acknowledges the link between Azmaish and her previous work. She shares, “Khamosh Pani, which was the first Pakistani film to fund a release in India ran back to back with Veer Zaara, was about how the politicization of religion created violence in both India and Pakistan. As a filmmaker, I am still searching for this answer. Azmaish is a new part of this old search.”

Sabiha Sumar and Kalki Koechlin travels Pakistan and India for ‘Azmaish Trials of Life’.

It has been an exhausting quest for Sabiha Sumar. She traveled across the subcontinent to shoot Azmaish and faced many challenges, but it has been an enlightening experience as well.

“Shooting Azmaish in both India and Pakistan has shown me how resilient our people are. The leadership in our countries is not making full use of the human resource we have. This century demands a new vision for the subcontinent. Where will that vision come from?”

She leaves us with this open question.

But she will try to give her perspective on it in the documentary as well. “Azmaish is a search about what direction Pakistan and India should take. What do the people of both these countries want? How will they get it? It’s a film that gets beyond political rhetoric and connects the audience with the ground reality in both these countries”, she reveals.

Sabiha Sumar has worked with the artists from India in the past as well. In Azmaish she brought Kalki Koechlin, the prolific Bollywood actress, on board. How could she make it happen? “Kalki ‘s compassion and a no-nonsense approach was the key to her success in approaching people and getting them to open up to her. I think she found the idea for Azmaish strong and decided to participate”, she tells.

However, she does not feel good about the toll of current conflict between India and Pakistan falling on the artist community exclusively. “Tit for tat has been the norm in India-Pakistan relations. This needs to change. But how? What are the circumstances that could catapult the two countries towards a change? We have seen that artists are vulnerable and cannot achieve this alone”, she expresses her concerns over the ban of Pakistani artists in India meeting with suspension of Bollywood films in Pakistan.

Her last feature film Good Morning Karachi (2015), staring Amna Ilyas, was about the fashion world of Pakistan. The low budget film, despite the good storyline, could not do well at the box office. She, however, has a plan to make a ‘big’ film soon to support the growing popular cinema in Pakistan.

She sees positive prospects of the new-age cinema. “Pakistan is turning the corner. The arts especially cinema is beginning to find support in the country. Our ruling elite is starting to support cinema. We need financial institutions and film schools to come up so that a strong film industry can be built”, she opens up.

On the prospects of sustaining film environment in the country, she expresses, “Pakistan has a strong chance to make films that tell its stories and stories of the region in an authentic way. In fact the absence of a film industry can work to our advantage because we don’t have a dominating industry, even though Bollywood is just next door. Lets see how the industry develops in the next years. Good, strong cinema in both India and Pakistan can only be good.”

The shooting of Azmaish has been completed and currently it is raising funds for the post production expenses on an Indian crowd funding platform Wishberry. She needs 2 million Indian Rupees to complete the post production of the film before letting the world see it.

The film will be broadcast on German and French TV. It will also be screened in the festivals around the world. They are also hoping to set up a traveling cinema and take the film to small villages and towns in both India and Pakistan and encourage people to discuss the theme and the issues that the film raises.

Osman Khalid Butt is replaced by Ahad Raza Mir in ‘Parwaaz Hay Junoon’

Just a few days ago we shared five things making upcoming movie ‘Parwaaz Hay Junoon’ worth the wait, including the heartthrobs Osman Khalid Butt and Hamza Ali Abbasi sharing the screen first time in this air force saga. But the recent turn of events might disappoint the fans of Osman Khalid Butt as he is no longer part of the film.

Osman Khalid Butt, who just kick started the promotional activities of his upcoming film Balu Mahi, is replaced by Ahad Raza Mir in ‘Parwaaz Hay Junnon’.

The news is confirmed by Momina Duraid, the producer of the film, to Dawn Images. The reason behind this change, as told by her, is the unavailability of OKB for the shoot of the film as during this time he would be busy promoting Balu Mahi. Balu Mahi is releasing on Valentine’s Day (10 Feb).

Momina Duraid also confirmed the rest of the cast, as Hamza Ali Abbasi and Hania Aamir are still on board. The other cast members include Marina Khan and Shaz Khan, whereas the second female lead will be locked in next few days.

We hope this change won’t disappoint you much as the film still has many other reasons to cherish and wait for. Stay tuned for more updates on the film.

‘Parwaaz Hay Junoon’ is scheduled to release on Eid-al-Azha.

21 reasons why you should be excited for ‘Thora Jee Le’

Whereas the last few weeks may have been pretty dead for local cinema, things are about to pick steam as the first Pakistani release of 2017, ‘Thora Jee Le’, is all set to hit cinemas this Friday. Directed by first-timer Rafay Rashdi, the coming of age film narrates the story of seven friends going through life and tackling its many challenges.

Interestingly, the entire cast of the film features relatively unknown actors with Rizwan Ali Jaffri being the only well-known face. Nevertheless , if the trailer is anything to go by, the film does seem to be a promising affair which might just give us the much needed pool of new actors.

To know more about the film, we caught up with the leading actors and put them on the spot asking them to give us as many fun reasons as possible why we should be excited for the film. Thankfully, the cast members were good sports and gave us, as demanded, some super cool reasons. So here goes…

Thora-Jee-Le_1Rizwan Ali Jaffri (Actor)

#1 Im shirtless, so you can come and check that out.

#2 Its a film with lots of new good looking actors.

#3 Its an emotional ride which the youth will be able to relate to.

#4 The director is new so he has a different vision.

Thora-Jee-Le”-Official-Poster-Revealed-Fashion786Pk-com-3Bilal Abbas (Actor)

#5 I’m in the film, so that ought to be reason 5, 6 and 7

#6 I’m shirtless too, though not nearly as hot as Rizwan.

#7 One of our cast members, Salman, is pant-less too.

#8 The film has a really beautiful message at the end.

#9 You wont feel its a Bollywood rip-off, its completely original.

#10 Its a complete Pakistani film, going the support Pakistani route which you said not to mention waisay, but I think this needs to be said.

Fatima Shah Jillani (Actor)

Bilal took all my reasons but anyhow here goes.

#11 Yes, there are shirtless guys but we ( costar Ramsha ) will be giving them tough competition in the hotness department.

#12 There may be no item numbers, but the movie is full on masala and provides wholesome entertainment.

#13 We have seven very diverse characters in the film and the audience will definitely be able to relate to them and when that connection is made the viewer is invested and the film becomes more entertaining.

tj-8Ahsan Mohsin Ikram (Actor)

So staying true to my character from the film, who is a pretty serious guy, Ill give you reasons which might not be as fun as my co-stars but nonetheless reasons which will get you excited for the film.

#14 we always complain that the industry doesn’t have many new actors and the same faces get repeated. This film has all fresh faces so please come and support us.

#15 The film has a very realistic feel to it. We have stayed true to the situations and depicted them in a way so that the youth will be able to relate to it.

#16  The film is nothing like the trailer! We have deceived the audiences with the promos and the surprise element will definitely have a lasting impact.

13221664_10101367718090501_8340142623688938531_nRafay Rashdi ( Writer/Director)

#17 The film almost got shelved four times! Want to know why? Well when you are working with a new cast and team, you are out of station shooting at various locations it does get frustrating dealing with so many people so it would come across as the film is getting shelved. The cast would come  and council me and be like you’re too good and all. So all you fans might as well check our film. 🙂

#18 The film has been made with a lot of dedication, blood , sweat , threats and what not 😉

#19 There is a social message in this film. Also it’s a film for the youth, featuring the youth and made by the youth.

Team Galaxy Lollywood

Having had a chance to interact with the cast and crew and getting a rather detailed look into the film here is one final reason from us.

#20 The cast and crew has worked really hard on the film and if our discussion with them is anything to go by, this will be one fun film. Also they are easy on the eyes so that helps doesn’t it. 🙂

#21 Last but definitely not the least  the reason that EVERYONE uses. Be Pakistani and support your content.

The upcoming mega project ‘Parwaaz Hay Junoon’ by Momina & Duraid Films and Hum Films, the makers of Mahira Khan starer romantic-drama Bin Roye (2015), is one project we are looking forward to eagerly this year. The film, which was revealed few months ago in a press conference in Karachi, is finally hitting the floors and gearing up for the late 2017 release.

From the writer to the director to the lead cast, the film boasts the lineup of talented people flocking for the project. Here are five things making the film worth the wait and demanding you to mark your calendars for its release date, which is expected to coincide with Eid-al-Azha.

‘Parwaaz Hay Junoon’ will chronicle the real life events and stories of brave men and women of Pakistan Air Force, giving a tribute to the prestigious institute of the country. The film will show the hardships and challenges faced by the people safeguarding the airspace of Pakistan, evoking the patriotic fervour in the audience.

The film, being produced in collaboration with Pakistan Air Force, will also feature the airforce pilots and personalities working along with the cast.

2- Cinematic debut of TV director Haseeb Hassan

The award-winning director of multiple hit TV dramas, most notably Diyar e Dil (2015) and Mann Mayal (2016), Haseeb Hassan, is debuting at the cinema with ‘Parwaaz Hay Junoon’.

The script of ‘Parwaaz Hay Junoon’ is penned by the famed writer Farhat Ishtiaq, who has many reputed scripts to her credit including the film Bin Roye and dramas Humsafar, Diyar e Dil and most recent massive hit Udaari.

Farhat Ishtiaq is known for writing compelling and emotive stories and has given one hit after the other in her short career of writing for the TV and cinema. For ‘Parwaaz Hay Junoon’ she will also get assistence from the airforce personnels in writing the script.

5- Hania Aamir is the female lead

We knew about the leading men of the film since the announcement of the film but the leading lady was kept in the shrouds of mystery until now. The news is that the chirpy and super cute Palwasha of Janaan, Hania Aamir, has bagged the lead role in ‘Parwaaz Hay Junoon’ opposite Hamza Ali Abbasi and Osman Khalid Butt.

The film will be the debut of 19 year old Hania Aamir, who got into fame with her dubsmash videos on the social media and eventually landed into the films, as the leading lady opposite the towering stars.

Style File: Mahira Khan giving us major beauty goals in ‘Raees’

Va va voom! We are totally swooning over Mahira Khan these days. Our lovely lady is making way into our hearts through her first ever Bollywood movie, Raees, that too with the King of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan.

Ever since the news of them starring together came out, we could not wait for the official trailer. The trailer, which released a month ago, only gave us a sneak peak of Mahira, left us wanting to see more of her. Lo and behold, our wish came true when we got not one but two songs featuring Mahira Khan and Shah Rukh Khan.

Playing a Pathani Muslim girl in the film, Mahira gives us ‘Humsafar’ vibes in the first song titled ‘Zaalima’. Move over Asher-Khirad, we have  now fallen in love with Raees-Aasiya. Complimenting Shah Rukh Khan, Mahira manages to look sultry yet sophisticated in an all black lace number paired with smoky eyes and nude lips. Minimal makeup paired with all black and a tinge of sparkle shining in the scorching desert heat has us head over heels for our new favorite pair.

Although the song has King Khan but we cannot take our eyes off our own Khan. If someone can carry fitted anarkalis and look like sheer class, that has to be Mahira Khan. Looking ethereal in an all white anarkali adorned with sequins and huge jhumkey, Mahira makes us wonder if we can ever do justice to neutrals like she does. Yet again, we cannot help but compare her white ensemble with one of her looks as Khirad from Humsafar. It seems like a lot of fashion inspiration was taken from her hit drama to make the audience fall back in love with her.

Mahira Khan in Raees and HumsafarSilhouettes accentuating Mahiras figure, minimal makeup and a statement pair of earrings throughout the song has been the name of the game for her looks. For someone as beautiful as her, it is safe to say she can easily carry off any look.

The second offering by Raees, ‘Udi Udi Jaye’ starts off with Mahira in lace shalwar kameez yet again with minimal makeup and jhumkiyan. A staple look for our beautiful Mahira, we are spellbound when we see her in a traditional colorful attire doing Garba.

A festive song displaying an array of colors leaves us mesmerized and glued to our screens. Not letting go of the minimal makeup or jhumkiya, the stylist takes Mahiras style up a notch by giving her a pop of color on the lips paired with heavier jewellery for the extra oomph factor.

If ‘Zaalima’ was all about neutrals, ‘Udi Udi Jaye’ focuses on colors, traditional polki or kundan jewellery. Also, we cannot help but notice her ‘sexy’ back in both ‘Zaalima’ and ‘Udi Udi Jaye’.  A huge shout out to the stylists, Shabana, Krys and Sheetal  for staying true to the culture and giving Mahira exquisite looks.

We cannot wait to see what more the movie has to offer. Do you love Mahiras styling, let us know.

Maula Jatt 2.0- The Cast

Yes, you read that right!

The cat is out of the bag as Galaxy Lollywood exclusively reveals the all-star cast of upcoming film ‘Maula Jatt 2’ directed by Bilal Lashari. Read more: GL EXCLUSIVE: Fawad Khan in Maula Jutt?

Well as per our sources, giving tough competition to the leading men will be talented divas Mahira Khan and Humaima Malick who will be essaying the roles of Mukkho Jatti and Daroo Natti.  If this does not read blockbuster, we dont know what will!

As per our information, the film goes on floors later this month with a late 2017-early 2018 release date. Also it is worth mentioning that the film is a reboot and not a sequel ( we dont know what is with all these 2’s then, Arth 2 and Maula Jatt 2) as Bilal aims to reinvent the entire gandasa culture. Interestingly, despite all the changes the film will still be shot in its original language that is Punjabi.

We are super excited for this one! Stay tuned to Galaxy Lollywood for all updates.
