Are Hamza Ali Abbasi’s scruples creating trouble for “Jawani Phir Nahi Ani”?

If Meera is known as the queen of controversies then Hamza Ali Abbasi should be declared the king of “social media” controversies. We usually don’t share or discuss the king’s controversies, perhaps, the latest one is exasperating as its not only making Hamza’s close friends and the makers of upcoming comedy/drama film Jawani Phir Nai Ani embarrassed and putting them in a difficult situation but it also shows how an actor can try to cast his influence on the effort of hundreds of other people working on the film based on his moral scruples, especially, at the time when the film is going to be released in about a month.

Hamza Ali Abbasi is one of the male leads of Jawani Phir Nai Ani (JPNA). The film is scheduled to be released on Eid-ul-Azha next month.

Hamza sparked the controversy part 1 several months ago when the teaser of JPNA was released featuring shirtless Hamza glancing at a bikini clad girl and dancing with not-fully-dressed girls on a beach in Bangkok. Afterwards, and consequently, he resigned from the post of Cultural Secretary of PTI on the pretext of having contradiction in one’s (his own) words and actions. His scrupulous decision was applauded by his fans but his criticism of the industry fellows for doing/adding item songs in films was not well received by some of the people both from and outside the industry. At that time a glimpse of Ayesha Omer’s dance number “Tutti Fruiti” from the film Karachi Say Lahore was revealed and many believed the poor Ayesha was the main target of Hamza’s criticism.

Here is the “controversial teaser” of JPNA which was released in March.

The film’s theatrical trailer was released a week ago and many were expecting to hear Hamza Ali Abbasi’s point of view on it. Finally, after a week, Hamza broke his silence and shared his “last words on this matter” in the form of seven points on his Facebook page, giving birth to the controversy part 2. In seven points he claimed that he was doing the film without being paid and as a favor (to the makers of JPNA) and he had issues with two songs of the film for having “indecent visuals”. He also mentioned that he had refused to be part of the film promotion if the songs were not dropped from it.

The snapshot of Hamza’s seven points is attached below. The actor is habitual of frequently editing his status and making changes as his 2.5 million fans on Facebook share their feedback. For reviewing the most recent version of the seven points, you can visit his official Facebook page.

Hamza;s seven points on JPNA

While giving an interview to The Express Tribune on this matter Hamza cleared his position and explained his point of view. Hamza said, “Let me clarify, the reason for which I did this film was not money. I am not being paid for this film. I am not being paid a single penny for this. I did this film only for the sake of my friendship with Humayun Saeed.” In the interview he also shared that when he learned about the execution of the film he wanted to back off as few things in the film were against his values but he stayed on board for his personal reasons.

His interview with The Express Tribune further reveals that, majorly, he has issue with bikini clad girls dancing in a song with him and his co-stars, Vasay Chaudhary, Ahmad Ali Butt and Humayun Saeed. He claimed that he was not aware of these girls being included in the song and he could not back out from the project as it was difficult for him by that time.

Watch the full trailer of the film below. The cast of JPNA includes Humayun Saeed, Ahmad Ali Butt, Vasay Chaudary, Mehwish Hayat, Sohai Ali Abro, Javed Sheikh, Bushra Ansari, Ismail Tara, Ayesha Khan, Sarwat Gillani, Uzma Khan and Hamza Ali Abbasi. It is to be noted that many of the scenes from the teaser have not been included in the trailer, especially the scenes of shirtless Hamza Ali Abbasi with bikini clad girl(s). A big disappointment for girls/boys who were drooling over him in a “hot” avatar.

Hamza also told The Express Tribune that he was refraining from the promotion of film only because of his song with bikini clad girls. If the song was taken off from the film then he would promote the film.

Hamza’s status on Facebook has caused quite a confusion about the actor’s commitment with the project. At least, this did not make the distributor of the film and CEO of ARY Digital, Jerjees Seja, happy who posted a status on his Facebook profile directly addressing and linking Hamza Ali Abbasi. The snapshot of Jerjees status is attached below.

JJ facebook status

Jerjees Seja is known as a man of quiet nerves but it seems Hamza Ali Abbasi’s expected but unnecessary explanations are causing embarrassment and trouble for the makers of the film, and, also in other way, helping to “indirectly” promote the film which Jerjees himself identified.

Hamza, however, came with a rejoinder on Jerjees’s status criticizing the channel owners, producers and actors without “morals and decency”, as you can read in the snapshot below.

Hamza response to JJ

On the other hand Humayun Saeed, the co-producer of the film, seems relatively calmer on this controversy. While talking to The Express Tribune Humayun Saeed clarified that Hamza Ali Abbasi will be paid for the film as per his contract. He said, “He hasn’t asked me for the money, yes that’s true. But he is being paid. I don’t know if he has already received payment because I haven’t checked with the accounts department but he will be paid the amount stated on the contract he signed.”

In the interview Humayun also acknowledged that Hamza told him that he wanted to back out of the project before they started filming but it was too late by then. He said if he had been informed of Hamza’s concerns earlier then there would have been no issue if Hamza stepped out. “If you think about it, it was unprofessional of him to try and leave the film after signing it. I really was in a fix at that point; so, I asked him to stay. And he did. But that wasn’t a favor he had done for me. It was him who had put me in the spot in the first place.”

Humayun also criticized Hamza for his unprofessional attitude in The Express Tribune interview by these words, “Even now, it’s unprofessional of him to say he won’t promote the film. If he has made the commitment, he should honor it in full. His job doesn’t end at the completion of the shoot. Promotion is as much a part of the deal as shooting.”

This controversy has only fueled the debate of what type of films Pakistani filmmakers should make. Pakistani film industry is on the path of revival, or rebirth, after decades of downfall and this year we saw an influx of films after several years. The filmmakers are trying different genres and making films for different types of audience. It will be too early to generalize the pattern as the box office numbers are quite convoluted. A film with a sizzling item number can be a flop (i.e. Dekh Magar Pyaar Say) or a patriotic/intense drama film cannot attract a wide audience (i.e. Moor, Shah) whereas people can throng for a romantic drama (i.e. Bin Roye) or a comedy film with adult jokes (i.e. Wrong Number, Karachi Say Lahore). It is the game of numbers in the box office which directly reflect what people like and want to watch.

It is really confusing to find the real motives of Hamza Ali Abbasi behind these JPNA related controversies. It could be a promotion stunt by the actor or an effort to gain some of the more attention, which people find quite addictive at times. Or, it could really be voice of a person concerned about the quality of the films being produced in the country. In any case, this is against the professional norms and ethics to put a team’s work in trouble and influencing it based on one’s moral scruples at such a critical time.

Let people, who spend money, decide what they like to watch, as they are mercilessly doing with other films. Read latest box office reports on our website to get better idea of it.

Mahira Khan’s latest release Bin Roye is running successfully for more than 5 weeks. She will also be seen in a special role in biopic Manto releasing on 11th of the next month. However, her major release and one of the most awaited movies of this year, Ho Mann Jahan, is delayed till November with confirmation of new release date still due.

1st Week Box Office: ‘ Dekh Magar Pyaar Say’ completely dead while ‘Moor’ and ‘Shah’ are strictly okay.

We cannot vouch for the authenticity of these box office numbers given by independent box office tracking sites. But until the official numbers come from the makers themselves or until we have some official box-office tracking system in Pakistan this is all we have got. Also the numbers are revised at times and hence you may find th numbers a bit different for certain days.

This Independence Day was surely special as not one, nor two, but three Pakistani films were releasing all over Pakistan. What made this clash even more interesting was the fact that the genres of the three films were completely different. While ‘DMPS’ was a commercial film pegged as a romantic comedy, the off beat films ‘Shah’ and ‘Moor’ were a biopic and drama respectively. Moreover all these films had to face tough competition from the Bollywood release ‘Brothers’ as well as the past releases ‘Wrong Number’ ‘Bin Roye’ and ‘Karachi Se Lahore’.

The first day proved to be a success for all the films as each of them recorded great numbers. While ‘DMPS’ being a commercial film was obviously the one with the biggest collection, ‘Shah’ and ‘Moor’ also clicked with their target markets and recorded healthy numbers.

But once the first day ended, the audience had their feedback ready and this word of mouth was spreading like wildfire. ‘DMPS’ got bashed by both critics and the general public while ‘Shah’ and ‘Moor’ won laurels. This was clearly visible in the numbers as the collections of ‘DMPS’ fell while ‘Shah’ and ‘Moor’ grew. But since ‘DMPS’ had huge collections on the first day the first weekend was decent.

But the real fall for ‘DMPS’ came on Monday as it was left with about 30% of the shows it was originally supposed to have and this is not a good sign for a film. Even these shows were played to a limited crowd as the negativity had spread and nobody wanted to see the film. Thursday was the last day for the film as it is no more playing in cinemas ( except for maybe two or three screens ) and thus the film had a lifetime of only 7 days. The coming weekend will probably be the last three days for the film at the remaining few screens and looks like this film will end on a 2.3 crore lifetime which means the film is a flop.

As for ‘Shah’ and ‘Moor’ they are strictly okay at the box-office. Yes, they were off-beat films, made for a certain section but still the numbers haven’t really been super-impressive and going by the decrease in shows it seems like the coming weekend will be the last few days at the box office for the films. A life-time of 1-1.25 crore seems to be on the cards for these films.

Here are the numbers:-

1. Dekh Magar Pyaar Say
-Friday-Sunday: 1.75 crore
-Monday Thursday: 0.40 crore
Total: 2.15 crore

2.Moor
-Friday-Sunday: .62 crore
-Monday Thursday: .23 crore
Total: 0.84 crore

3.Shah
-Friday-Sunday: .60 crore
-Monday Thursday: .15 crore
Total: 0.75 crore

Lets see what happens in the coming days. You stay tuned to Galaxy Lollywood.

Third Week: Forget the three new releases, ‘Karachi Se Lahore’ still seems to the be the first choice for viewers.

We cannot vouch for the authenticity of these box office numbers given by independent box office tracking sites. We tried to get official numbers from the makers but the makers did not want to reveal the numbers. So until the official numbers come from the makers themselves or until we have some official box-office tracking system in Pakistan this is all we have got. Moreover at times the numbers are revised to dont worry if you see a slight change in the mentioned numbers.

It came and it conquered!

The film ‘Karachi Se Lahore’ hit cinemas and from the very first day itself it became obvious that the film was going to register some big numbers at the box office. Almost all shows were sold out and the word of mouth was extremely positive. So it did not come as a surprise when the film showed great growth on the second and third day.

Moreover the film maintained its numbers on the weekdays too and seven days after it first hit cinemas one could safely say that the film was a success. It should be noted that despite the fact that the film released on a non-holiday week and had to face tough competition from a handful of past releases it still managed to make its presence felt. One only wonders what magic the film would have cast at the box office had it released on Eid-ul-Fitr as its common knowledge that any and every film released during the Eid festivities is bound to get a boost.

But the film was yet to show its real magic as it made more money in its second weekend as compared to the first week. This can be attributed to the positive word of mouth which led to the film getting more shows in its second weekend. Moreover the film maintained its strong collections and hence managed to score a big week two.

This third weekend was very crucial for ‘KSL’ as three new Pakistani films were hitting cinemas and the showtimes were redistributed. But of the three new films not one has been able to put a dent into the collections of ‘KSL’. While ‘Shah’ and ‘Moor’ being off beat films were never going to do much but even ‘DMPS’ is fizzling away in the background. Looks like ‘KSL’ is here to stay!

Here are the day to day numbers:-

  • Day 1: 40 lacs
  • Day 2: 75 lacs
  • Day 3: 75 lacs
  • Day 4-7: 1.8 cr
  • Day 8: 60 lacs
  • Day 9: 80 lacs
  • Day 10: 80 lacs
  • Day11-14: 1.3 cr
  • Day15-17: 75 lacs
  • Day 18-21: 30 lacs

Total: 8.25 cr

Lets see how the film holds in the coming days. Stay tuned to Galaxy Lollywood for updates.

Day 32-35: Despite three new releases both ‘Wrong Number’ and ‘Bin Roye’ complete five successful weeks while still going strong.

We cannot vouch for the authenticity of these box office numbers given by independent box office tracking sites. While we had the official numbers from ARY Films for ‘Wrong Number’ for the first few days now we do not have the numbers for either ‘Wrong Number’ or Roye’. So until the official numbers come from the makers themselves or until we have some official box-office tracking system in Pakistan this is all we have got. Also the numbers are revised at times and hence you may find th numbers a bit different for certain days.

It was surely a clash of the titans as two big budget films were releasing on the very same day. Both the films had stars attached to them and the promotion/marketing for the films was a success as the buzz around them both was worth seeing. But what happens at the box-office window, well nobody can really predict. People thought that the Mahira Khan starrer would emerge as the clear winner given her recent escapades in Bollywood, but well the box office has a different story to tell.

It was evident from the first day itself that Wrong Number would be leading this box-office battle as it had registered huge numbers for the first day. Moreover it also managed to maintain those numbers as the days passed. A week after the release one could safely say that ‘Wrong Number’ not only won this war but had generally established itself as a ‘hit film’. Specially since it was holding up exceptionally well after the Eid holidays which proved that the film was being liked by the audiences and that the word of mouth was positive. However the biggest magic trick the film pulled was when it had a bigger second weekend as compared to its initial release. The international norm is that the second week sees a fall in the collections. But ‘Wrong Number’ not only maintained the collections rather it improved on them! It has already crossed the 10cr mark. It’s worth mentoring that except ‘Waar’ , ‘Na Maloom Afraad’, ‘Bol’ and Chooriyan’ no Pakistani film has ever crossed the 10 cr mark so it’s a huge achievement. The film has now grossed about 13 cr at the box office and has overtaken ‘Na Maloom Afraad’ while earning the spot as the third highest grosser of all time. Moreover the film held really well after the release of Karachi Se Lahore and added quite some numbers to the total tally.

Moreover ‘Bin Roye’ also is a winner in the sense that is has recorded good numbers at the box office. After a somewhat slow start the film picked up on day two and three and its due to this growth that the film had managed a strong first week. Moreover Bin Roye also held really well despite the fact that the Eid festivities had ended. Furthermore even ‘Bin Roye’ improved on its first week figures and shows a growth. Well the film has crossed the 10 cr mark at the domestic box office and once you add the numbers from the international markets this film has huge numbers. ( We will be doing a post on the Bin Roye international box office soon)

This fifth weekend was very crucial for both these films as three new Pakistani films were hitting cinemas and the showtimes were redistributed. But of the three new films not one has been able to put a dent into the collections of ‘Bin Roye’ and ‘Wrong Number’. While ‘Shah’ and ‘Moor’ being off beat films were never going to do much but even ‘DMPS’ is fizzling away in the background. Looks like both ‘Wrong Number’ and ‘Bin Roye’ are here to stay!

We did ask some cinema people for their opinion and they maintained the same stance that both films are doing well but they did mention that ‘Wrong Number’ has been doing better at single screens while Bin Roye is  doing well at multiplexes.Well let’s see what the next few days have in store for both the films.

Shaan Shahid announces Yalghaar’s release date at the star studded Nikon Photo & Film Festival.

It was surely a momentous day for anyone associated with film-making/photography as Camtronx Pakistan, official distributor for Nikon in Pakistan, held an award ceremony to celebrate Pakistan’s young talent. The grand ceremony was a one of its kind event when it comes to promoting  young talent in Pakistan and the innovative company Nikon is the one behind this feat.

Wednesday 19 August 2015 was the day when the 1st Nikon Photo & Film Festival’s  award ceremony took place  at the Pearl Continental Hotel. The evening was attended by members from the Japanese Embassy and over 500 photographers and videographers from across the country. Moreover what made this event extra special was the presence of our very own Lollywood star Shaan Shahid whose presence was surely the highlight of the event. Also present at the event were various celebrities like Junaid Khan, Munib Nawaz, Noor, Natasha Hussain among many others.

Galaxy Lollywood’s very own Momin Ali Munshi was at the event and he was the first one to break the news when Shaan Shahid made an announcement regarding the release date of his film Yalghaar. Although Shaan’s manager stands by his original statement that the film will release this Christmas( Read Here) but Shaan announced February 2016 as the release date. Only time will tell what the real release date is.

The event was hosted by the talented Sophiya Anjam who surely brought a certain energy  with her hosting skills while the management was by the event managing guru’s JBnJaws Productions with Amjad Bhatti working his PR magic.

Here are a few photos from the event.

A quick chat with Madiha Qaiser, the make up artist for “Shah”

ARY Films’ Shah is gaining critical praise for bringing an unsung Pakistani real-life hero to the silver screen. While the revival of Lollywood is decked with glamour and star power to bring in audiences, Shah, made on a limited budget, rests more on good story-telling and characterizations.

Galaxy Lollywood had a quick chat with Madiha Qaiser, make-up artist for the film, to find out just her experience with the project.

Q1- How did ‘Shah’ happen for you? Have worked on any film/ TV serials before this?

I’ve known Adnan Sarwar for a while. It all happened when he approached me earlier this year having faith that I could do a project like this.

I’ve done TV serials before and have worked on another film called Bachaana starring Sanam Saeed, Mohib Mirza and Adeel Hashmi releasing end of this year InshaAllah.

Q2- Does make-up get its due importance in our nascent industry?

No

Q3- Shah is not a glamorous movie, focusing more on realistic characters. How does your make-up style change for such thematic films?

It varies from project to project. For Shah all the focus was on making the characters look realistic and relatable as much as possible. Plus since it’s a boxing film it required a lot of special effects makeup which was very challenging but also very exciting.

Q4- What was the most difficult aspect of working on the movie?

Trying to create makeup looks according to the weather and scenes. My aim was to make it look fresh in such remote locations.

Q5- What is your message for prospective make-up artists and stylists wishing to get into Lollywood?

It’s not all glitz and glamour it’s a lot of hard work, long working hours and physically draining profession as far as films are concerned. But at the same time it’s very rewarding to see your work on the big screen and people appreciating it.

The first poster of the film featuring Armeena Rana Khan is also released. Janaan will be Armeena’s first Pakistani film in a lead role. Earlier she appeared in a supporting role in Bin Roye which is running for more than 5 weeks in Pakistani cinemas successfully.

Janaan first posterEarlier, Ali Rehman Khan shared the news of joining the film’s team on Instagram.

Veteran TV actress Mishi Khan also announced joining the team of Janaan on Twitter a while ago.

Reham Khan, the wife of Pakistan’s political stalwart and ex-cricketer Imran Khan, got meteoric fame after marrying the chairman of Pakistan’s second largest political party this year. She has worked as broadcast journalist in United Kingdom before shifting to Pakistan last year. Janaan is expected to great deal of hype due to Reham Khan’s name associated with it.

We are very excited about this film and looking forward to more details.

1st Weekend (Box Office): ‘ Dekh Magar Pyaar Say’ slows down while ‘Moor’ and ‘Shah’show growth.

1. Dekh Magar Pyaar Say :1.75 crore
