Pakistan’s New-age Cinema: Expectations and Challenges

By Zeeshan Mahmood

‘New-age cinema’ and ‘revival of cinema’ are the two terms most frequent in media these days when the current state of film industry in Pakistan is in focus. These terms may sound cliches, but I believe they are used quite aptly for our film industry that is finally on the rise after a long downfall spanning over a period of two decades, and taking baby steps to be formed into new shapes and dimensions sourcing out of the passion and efforts of a new breed of filmmakers that is without any coincidence largely happens to be from Karachi instead of Lahore unlike in the days gone.

The dream of seeing boom in the film industry and cinema culture of Pakistan seems nearing its reality with an increasing number of films being announced, but the business of making films and selling the dream of revival of cinema at the same time does not seem a smooth journey owing to multi-dimensional socio-economic, cultural and political issues engulfing the local film industry just like any other business in the country in this time of uncertainty. In this article, I discuss some of the challenges new-age cinema faces today along with people’s hopes and expectations from it.

Balochistan takes a rise on Pakistan’s film map

By Aayan Mirza

Feature Image by: Zeeshan Mahmood

For years the province of Balochistan has remained culturally invisible for majority of the country. Most of us only know about that particular province just as much as our school tablos show us on their independence day functions every year. For years the province has remained in utter silence.

But Balochistan, ladies and gentlemen, is back! Back in the scene, back in films, and back on Pakistan’s cultural map.

Syed Noor 2.0- The evolution of the “Masala” King of Lollywood. ( AN EXCLSUIVE INTERVIEW)

By Momin Ali Munshi

“So the Transformer is hidden underground, but when the protagonists’ daughter cries out, the Transformer jumps out and beats all the bad guys. If memory serves me right wasn’t this the exact scenario when Maula Jatt’s mother shouts Maulaaa! And a super hyper Maula comes running and beats all the goons?” Syed Noor is excited while narrating his analysis to a group of friends while I listen on. He then turns to me and asks “Beta you tell aren’t both the scenes rather similar?” I am actually convinced and move my head up and down to say I agree. Having my approval he goes on and states how we need to respect our cinema and need to own it. He goes on length to tell how passionate he is for the local cinema and how he believes the revival has already started. This is Syed Noor for you energetic, passionate and always ready to talk about local cinema and I am already excited for our interview. He then gets up and we move to a quieter corner and start our conversation.

Here are excerpts from the interesting free flowing conversation:-

What makes the LSAs more special this time around? Well, it’s the film nominations that unlike the last time around are again part of it in this edition. And film nominations mean time for Galaxy Lollywod to take the hot seat.

‘Jeenay Chalay’ of Dukhtar’s OST has trademark Shafqat Amanat Ali feel

By Aayan Mirza

Shafqat Amanat Ali has that distinct voice which makes what he sings, neither too complicated to hear nor too contemporary, it has its own identity. One can feel it in Khamaj, in Ramchand Pakistani’s Phir Wohi Raastey and most recently in Dukhtar’s second song from its OST, Jeenay Chalay.

Khoobsurat Fawad signs three Pakistani films

By Aayan Mirza

Not many would disagree here; ever since Fawad Khan has blown a new life to our television screens, we have all been dreaming of him to be seen on the big screen, more so in the present day because the new Pakistani cinema has finally taken its long desired flight.

But Fawad couldn’t fulfil this desire of yours with a Pakistani film, as the local film industry till very recently, honestly, didn’t really have much to offer. So he went for the next best option, and experimented himself with Bollywood.
