Sawal 700 Crore Dollar Ka (Review): The senior citizen fiesta is as bad as its name!

Movie Name: Sawal 700 Crore Dollar Ka

Release Date: July 6, 2016

Director: Jamshed Jan Muhammad

Review by: Momin Ali Munshi

When I first saw the trailer of SSCDK I was perplexed by the two extremes I saw in this ninety second footage. On one hand I could see this really well shot heist film with some great aerial shots, applaud worthy cinematography and the much desired cinematic feel, while on the other hand I could sense some shabby acting, bad VFX and the old school Lollywod-ness.

But when the second trailer( or was it the third) of the film came out which had edited out all the bad VFX and had reduced the Lollywood-ness ( that tacky Sawaal Saath So jingle at the end and more)  and shed light on the story, well my expectations  from the film increased quite a lot. Therefore when I walked into the cinema hall , I was anticipating a high budget Pakistani thriller which was shot in exotic locations and would be a cinematic experience. Sadly, it was the opposite!

The film narrates the story of two thieves Tiger ( Javaid Sheikh) and Commander who are known to be the best in the game. However due to an unfortunate accident Tiger looses his partner but he must pull of one last robbery as he owes money to the mafia. Walks in Rocky( Ali Mohiuddin) a young thief with a promising record and voila he collaborates with Tiger because Sawal 700 Crore Dollar ka hay! Oh, and there is Officer Khan ( Shamoon Abbasi) who has been assigned the duty of catching the thieves.

While the plot is decent the execution is bad! The VFX is so amateurish that you dont even need to be a film person to see through it. I get the argument that our nascent film industry cant afford the desired special effects but then why make a film when you know you cant do justice to the plot? Anyhow there was this one scene where Shamoon fires three shots at a local don and we see three paintball-esque splashes on his shirt! Now this does not need money, so I dont know what was going on in the directors mind.

Not only the VFX but the screenplay was a mess too, and whoever okay-ed the last fifteen minutes of the film should be banned from film-making. The twists and turns at the end were just added for the sake of it and so many questions were left unanswered! Yes, I get it that the director wants a sequel but the ending was a let down. I cant get into the details of it because of the spoilers but so many scenes were coming across as pointless because the continuity of the film was not even considered while editing I guess. The positioning of the song ‘Bin Tere’ was one of the many such incidents where you were left wondering what just happened!

And the reason Ive termed it as a senior citizen fiesta is because almost everyone in the film is old!  You might go like hey the film has its hero and heroine while its just the supporting cast which includes the veterans. But trust me, once you see the film you will understand my point. In addition to the legendary actors  Javaid Sheikh, Ghulam Mohiuddin, Ismail Tara, Nayyar Ejaz  who by the way are the star attractions, even the other shorter roles have been assigned to seniors. Also the people behind the scenes, well no points for guessing!

For those who were fans of Javaid Sheikh and all back in the day, this film is like a trip down the memory lane as the veterans have been presented like stars and at times even overshadow the hero. Be it the super chic wardrobe of Javaid Sheikh, or the larger than life persona of Nayyar Ejaz, this film is heaven for all you 80’s and 90’s folks! And had it released a decade ago, we would have celebrated it for its technological advancements but in today’s age and time the film came across as a joke.

Its not just the technological parts but even the screenplay and the dialogues leave much to be desired. I believe that the old school dialogues penned by Nasir Adeeb  would appeal to the ‘seniors’ but they did not click with the average cine-goer who expects much more crispy and relatable dialogues.  Oh and there were these scenes which had Ifthikhar Thakhur and Ismail Tara doing their comedy bit, but which instead of leaving the viewer in splits made the viewers want to shoot themselves.

Coming to the acting bit well the veterans obviously put up a great show as expected. But the newbies need to learn some basics. The hero Ali may have the star like-persona but his acting skills need to be worked upon as his acting was very forced and unnatural, specially in the romantic bits. As for the leading lady well she does look like a filmy heroine in and does fill the vacuum in our industry but her acting skills are just as average as of the leading man. But it would not be wrong to say that we have two new additions in the film industry who with time will improve. Moreover there was Shamoon Abbassi as the police inspector and he was great as always. I just felt his acting was  bit too over the top at times but then given the directors absurd vision it went along with it.

And coming to the songs, while the credits may have great singers such as Shaan and Alka Yagnik among others from India, the lyrics were a miss! Yes there was  ‘Bin Tere’ and ‘Dhun Dhuna Dhun’ which I liked but the item numbers completely killed it for me. They were plain bad!Add to it the heavily inspired ( read lifted) background score from Bollywood films like Race and other it would not be wrong to say that the music gets a thumbs down!

Song line up of Noor Bukhari’s ‘Ishq Positive’ unveiled

Noor Bukhari’s Ishq Positive has its release nearing up with it’s cinema date set to be 22 July 2016, and before that comes a lot of unveiling activity. Part of this phase was the unveiling of the song line up of the film, which took place in Karachi yesterday (July 16, 2016) in the presence of relevant media personnel and bloggers.

Release Date Shuffle: ‘Salute’ replaced with ‘Blind Love’ while the former gets another postponement

When it comes to Pakistani films, the release dates have always been a problem! There is hardly a film or two which has succeeded in releasing on its original planned date otherwise a few postponements are inevitable. Moreover another problem with the Lollywood-wallahs is that when deciding on release dates there is no consideration for the release dates of other films and this results in further complications. For instance last year on Independence Day, 3 films released simultaneously ( total 14 films released last year) which ate into each others business while there were many open weeks where the films could have had a better release.

Even this year the coming few weeks seem jam-packed with releases. First we have four biggies ( Ishq Positive, Revenge Of The Worthless, Blind Love and Salute) set to release within close proximity to each other later this month and then we have the three mega releases ( Actor in Law, Janaan and Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hay) releasing on Eid-ul-Azha.

While the Karachi wallahs, who are releasing three biggies on Eid-ul-Azha are yet to change the dates , the Lahore producers seem to have more business aptitude and have smartly maneuvered the dates and the result is better for all.

Salute, which was to release on August 5 has now been shifted to September 2 and the original date has been given to Blind Love. The film Blind Love was earlier releasing on July 29, just a week after the release of Revenge Of The Worthless and Ishq Positive both of which release on 22 July, will now release on August 5.

Got a bit confusing right? Here is the new chart.

shq Positive 22 July, 2016 Romance Noor Bukhari, Wali Hamid Ali Khan, Shafqat Cheema, Saud
Revenge of the Worthless 22 July, 2016 Action/Drama Jamal Shah, Maira Khan, Ayub Khoso, Firdous Jamal, Noor Bukhari (Cameo)
Blind Love 5 August, 2016 Romance Yasir Shah, Amir Qureshi, Nimra Khan, Mathira

Salute  2 Sept, 2016  Biopic  Ajab Gul, Saima

In the spotlight: The LUMS Media Arts Society

2016 is an exciting time for Pakistani Cinema with a record number of films set to release and many more in production. It seems like the much talked about revival finally seems to be taking place and the future is bright. But how did this all happen? Almost everyone agrees that this new wave of cinema succeeded primarily because it brought with itself new talent and it is this injection of new blood in the dying industry that brought the desired results.

Moreover complimenting this new talent were many University students and Media Societies giving budding filmmakers, actors and technicians a chance to showcase their talent and to polish their skills via mentor ship from industry veterans.

Today at Galaxy Lollywood we are celebrating one such university and its media arts society who has undoubtedly played a pivotal role in promoting Pakistani Cinema. From their Film Festival FiLUMS which holds the distinction of being the first and biggest student run film festival of Pakistan, to the countless short films, feature films and documentaries this society has made. Yes, we are taking about the LUMS Media Arts Society of the Lahore University of Management Sciences which also happens to be the alma mater of Galaxy Lollywood co-founder Momin Ali Munshi.  To know more about the society we decided to talk to Zoha Zahid who is the Assistant Director for Promotions at LMA. Here is what she told us about the society.

lma 2“The Lums Media Arts Society, better known as LMA, is one of the largest and most eventful societies at LUMS which realizes the ever growing importance of media as a powerful channel for human expression and aims to inspire anyone with a passion towards art. From its inception, LMA has been involved in varied media ventures, mainly focusing on film-making and serves as a platform for those interested in producing/directing films. LMA seeks to become the primary outlet for students who want to express themselves in different forms and polish their skills thereby streamlining their creative zeal towards meaningful end products.

Apart from the production of films, LMA organizes and hosts various events that highlight the importance of media and serve as outlets for innovative and productive activities. The main events are FiLUMS,LUMS Movie Trivia, Film Realm etc.

LMA is dedicated to promoting creativity via the different forms of media available to us today. Alongside many others, one of our biggest events each year is FiLUMS, The Lums Film Festival, also the only one of its grandeur in Pakistan. At FiLUMS, we gather amateur and professional filmmakers from all over Pakistan and give them the platform to express their creativity by showcasing their projects in LUMS. FiLUMS hopes to give the film-making industry of Pakistan a much needed resuscitation by serving as a ground for young upcoming filmmakers, whom, we hope, will bring about a thorough and effective revival of the Pakistani cinema. Here, amateurs and experts come together to create an event that paves way for learning, inspiration, progress and constructive criticism – creating a space where new ideas are sown and old ones nourished, and with this, FiLUMS continues to grow at a phenomenal rate.

mohib sanamUsually, FiLUMS takes place in February/March; however, this year it will take place in November and the team is very enthusiastically looking forward to being introduced to and discovering new talents of our country, as done so each year. Different workshops and screenings of films that the participants have created take place and are divided into various categories, followed by the awards night. Not only are these events attended by the leading universities and schools of the country and many talented individuals, but they also receive immense media coverage and celebrity attention. At FiLums’16, we had the opportunity to invite celebrities and industry stalwarts like Mohib Mirza, Sanam Saeed , Bilal Lashari , Nadeem Mandviwalla  among others to give special workshops for participants interested in their work.

At the LMA Premiere Night ’16, we also held the premieres of two of our very own projects, our Flagship Film, “Mabel aur Mein” and the “Karakoram documentary”. Karakoram Documentary was the first such project of its kind produced by LMA.  The details about these productions can be found on our Facebook and other social media pages. Apart from that, the previous production projects include Rozana (2011-12), La hasil (2013-14), Khate Falak (2015).”

mabel aur meinNow isnt this all exciting? To know more about the society and the film festival check out the links below. Oh and did we mention that Bilal Lashari was the founder of this society?

Box Office Update: ‘Sultan’ strikes gold, blowing away the only local release ‘Sawal 700 Crore Dollar Ka’

Last year two big Pakistani films ‘Bin Roye’ and ‘Wrong Number’ released on Eid-ul-Fitr and both of them made their presence strongly felt on the box office despite having tough competition from Salman Khan starer Bollywood film ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’.

This Eid only one Pakistani film ‘Sawal 700 Crore Dollar Ka’ could make it to the cinemas which, as usual, had to compete with this year’s biggie from Bollywood ‘Sultan’, another Salman Khan film. The film, as obvious from its bizarre title and trailer, was not one to make many excited for the local content and did little good to the new-age cinema in Pakistan. (More on it in Galaxy Lollywood’s official review of the film publishing tomorrow.)

Although the state of local film industry remained bleak this Eid but the cinemas in Pakistan had a phenomenal extended weekend as it registered the record breaking tickets sales and collections. The clear winner in the arena was ‘Sultan’ which minted 17.7 crore in five days, a record of its kind, with jam-packed shows across the country. The total number of tickets sold over five days was also unprecedented, crossing 0.63 million mark and setting a new benchmark.

On the other side, the only local release S7CDK tried its best to get a small share in the pie and collected around 1.2 crore only. These collections still look better than as compared to those of the many other films of the similar outlook released in the recent past. 😉

This Eid four Hollywood movies (mostly animated) also released which added little in the total box office collections of five days touching the whooping threshold of 22 crore.

Here is the five day collections of all films released on Eid.

  1. Sultan (Bollywood) – 17.7 cr
  2. The Legend Of Tarzan (Hollywood) – 1.35 cr
  3. Sawal 700 Crore Dollar Ka (Lollywood) – 1.2 cr
  4. Finding Dory (Hollywood) – 0.9 cr
  5. Ice Age 5 (Hollywood) – 0.6 cr
  6. The Secret Life Of Pets (Hollywood) – 0.2 cr

Box Office Update : ‘Aksbandh’ is a washout while ‘Mah e Mir’ slides to week 4

Aksbandh

Pakistan’s first attempt at found footage released in cinemas on May 20 and from the very first day itself  the response was not that great. Its a known fact that horror has a niche audience and is not everyone’s cup of tea. Moreover, add to this the fact that the film does not have many known faces except for Ayaz Samoo and you get an explanation for the lukewarm response.

The film made about 12 lakhs in its first week and is now in its second week two and if things go smoothly it should end its run at about 20 lakhs, which though is a disappointment.

Mah e Mir

The eagerly awaited Fahad Musatafa-Iman Ali starrer released all over cinemas on 6 May 2016 and given the artistic nature of the film and its niche genre it was never expected that the film would make a strong impact at the box office.

It opened with 0.30 crore , which is not that great a number given that the film had huge names attached to it. A film like Maalik, which hardly had any stars attached to it opened with 0.40 crore. Sadly the film failed to see any major growth and collected 1.1 crore in its first weekend. It completely crashed on Monday and owing to the negative word of mouth ended its first week with 1.45 crore.

The second weekend added 0.25 crore and with the release of Bollywood films ‘Azhar’ ‘1920 London’ the shows for the film decrease and second week ended with 0.38 crore.

This last week ( 3rd week for the film) another Pakistani film ‘Aksbandh’ released and ‘Mah e Mir’ was left with even lesser shows. The film ended the week with  0.28 crore. However its interesting to note that the film still has decent number of shows in cinemas all over Pakistan and is about to end its fourth week. Looks like it will end its run at about 2.35 crore.

Aksbandh (Review): Pakistan’s first attempt at found footage surely deserves a watch.

Movie Name: Aksbandh

Release Date: May 20, 2016

Director: Emran Hussain

Review by: Momin Ali Munshi

Horror as a genre hasn’t been played with much when it comes to Pakistani Cinema. But then given the resurrection of our cinema and the number of films that have released  in the last few years it would not be wrong to say that in this period of experimentation the focus hasn’t been on any one genre as such. We have had biopics, comedies, social dramas among others genres and a Pakistani identity is still being formed. Interestingly even then we have had some three-four horror films hitting cinemas in the past and now the latest offering in this genre is the found footage horror film Aksbandh.

The film narrates the story of six friends who go on a trip to shoot a found footage film where things take a nasty turn for them and well they end up being part of a found footage film themself!

Talking about the story there is nothing novel and the script has clearly drawn inspiration from quite a few sources including ‘Blair Witch Project’ ,’The River ( Television Show)’ among others. Nonetheless the idea of having a Pakistani version of the same and to have a found footage film be set in Pakistan is exciting. Moreover the team deserves a pat on the back for trying something new.

Here I would like to mention that one of the staples of the found footage genre is the fact that it does not give closure at the end and unlike a horror film all loose ends arent tied up. In horror films the climax narrates the story of the supernatural entity and explains  why the the entire action took place. But since a found footage film is supposed to be talking reality there is no such scene and this can  put off some local viewers who want closure. I believe the 24 hour ban on the film was probably because of the same reason as the censor board felt the film was pointless. So be wary of the fact that there will not be an explanation of why it all happened.

Moving on, the actors are all very believable in the roles they are playing and the chemistry between the group shows and adds to the authenticity which was needed given the genre. Ayaz Samoo and Danial Afzal are the stars as among the lot these two gentlemen gave the best performance. They very effortlessly cruised through the film and made sure you loved/hated their character. This should not take away from Bilal, Saud and Mahrukh who also gave an applaud worthy performance. However I did feel that  Shehzeen Rahat could have done the role better and at times her acting came across as forced.

Talking about the direction, since the film was a found footage film  almost every rule of camera work gets a waiver. But the director did make sure that he used his camerawork effectively with all the shakiness , the angles etc. Moreover the director has used sound to his advantage in the film, which is something very rarely seen in our Pakistani films who have terrible background scores. Lastly, the film genuinely has its moments where you do get the scares and no I am not talking about the lazy jump scares but true authentic fear where the fear stays with you for more than the few seconds unlike the fear that a jump scare elicits.

All in all this is one great attempt at the genre and deserves a watch.
