Shahzad Rafique’s ‘Salute’ postpones again, but its first teaser is out finally

Shahzad Rafique is the prolific director of Pakistan film industry. He has given some of the highly memorable films of the last two decades, including Salakhain (2004) and Muhabtaan Sachiyaan (2007). His previous Punjabi romantic mystic drama Ishq Khuda was released in 2013 and since then he has been missing from the silver screen.

Rafique is returning to the big screen after a hiatus of three years with biopic Salute. The film is based on the life of Aitzaz Hassan who gave his life confronting a suicide bomber attempting to blow himself in his school and saved the lives of 2000 students present in the school.

Aitzaz Hassan, 17, was born in Hangu District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. After his martyrdom, he was hailed as a national hero and Pakistan government conferred him with high civil award Sitara-e-Shujaat (Star of Bravery).

Salute - poster 1Salute has been in making for quite some time now and it was announced to be released in September last month after few former postponements . The film is, however, delayed further and it will release on December 2 now, as revealed by a source close to the makers. This release date seems final one, as also assured by the source.

The new release date follows the release of the first teaser of the film, revealing breathtaking shots and epic soundtrack, enough to keep us waiting for it. It has joined our list of eagerly awaited movies. Check out the teaser below.

The queen of Lollywood Saima Noor is also returning to the big screen after long time with Salute. Ajab Gul, who will also be seen in Janaan this Eid, is playing husband of Saima in the film. The other cast of the film includes Nayyar Ejaz, Adnan Khan and Ali Mohtesham (playing Aitzaz Ahsan).

The trailer is promised to be released soon.

Moammar Rana is returning to the silver screen with a bang

Every film industry has its superstars who are always loved by fans no matter how many newcomers come and go. These superstars are fan favorites and they know how to charm their way to your hearts. We here in Lollywood have one such man who can rightfully be called a superstar. He is someone who has been missing from the scene for some time, but he has one of the highest grossing Pakistani film to his credit which ran in cinemas for about two years.

Yes, you guessed that right we are talking about the handsome hunk Moammar Rana who we all have been missing on the silver screen.

However recently the actor has been back in the news as he has been working on some films and this has his fans super psyched. And he is surely coming back with a bang as he has not one, not two rather, four films in the pipeline. Yes, you will be seeing him in 4 films. Furthermore there is this buzz surrounding his new fit look which has the girls gushing over the hot actor who has always been a favorite with the fans. We decided to talk to the dishy actor to know more about his projects and fitness regime.

A photo posted by @moammarrana on

So Moammar who looks fitter than ever revealed that he has been hitting the gym and has been working out religiously. Moammar believes that a fit body is a must and he hopes that he has inspired other actors to make an effort towards maintaining a healthy body something that has been missing from our industry, we agree!

Moving on to his four films Moammar revealed that the first one in line is ‘Bhai Wanted’ which is a Syed Noor film and well that says it all for this director actor duo as done wonders at the box office in the past (Chooriyan guys!). The film has a central male character and is a  full on action film. Moammar will be playing the role of an undercover cop, whereas Lollywood diva Saima will also be seen in the film. About 70 percent of the shooting is complete and the film will release sometime next year.

The second film is Sikander,  which is a home production being made under the M.R films banner and Moammar will not only be acting but will also be directing the film. This one is also an action film but not without the commercial tadka i.e romance and all. The music of the film is done by Sahir Ali Bagga and half of the film has been shot. As for the other half, well  Moammar plans to complete the other projects he has undertaken before he gets back to his home production. Therefore he has started shooting for the Syed Noor venture as he didn’t want to keep his favorite director waiting. Moammar  says it’s always a pleasure working with Syed Noor and how he couldn’t miss the chance working with him as he always teaches new things and well he has always been his mentor.

The third film in line is this new untitled venture starring Moammar and Sonia Hussain, who was previously seen in Moor. The film is an action romance  and will be directed by Imran Malik. The film will be shot in Kashmir as well as UK, 45 percent of the film has been completed.

‘SKZ’- Sayah Khudaye Zuljalaal is the fourth film in line for MoammarRana which is almost complete. The film is produced by Muhammad Tauseef Razzak and Moammar is playing a police Commando while the Ishq Positive girl Noor and  model Rachel Gill will be acting opposite him. The film is about the 1947 freedom movement. Moammar just completed his dubbing in Lahore before going back to Shogran for Imran Maliks spell. This film will be relasing somewhere in September.

Well we would like to wish Moammar all the best for his films and we cant wait to see the actor in action!

Dance Kahani (Review): An unwonted dance story is a passable but refreshing addition to the indie cinema

Movie Name: Dance Kahani

Release Date: Aug 5, 2016

Director: Omar Hassan

Review by: Zeeshan Mahmood

Cinema is the most powerful medium of visual arts and with the rapid advancements in the technology and creative processes, the cinematic experience is becoming more engrossing and intoxicating. The human capabilities of telling compelling stories in different possible ways is increasing day by day as more and more technological and creative possibilities are being created and expanded.

Our budding new-age cinema is slow in adapting to this global phenomenon as it is still in the ‘discovery’ state and taking baby steps towards developing a sustainable film environment in the country. But, the good thing is that, our filmmakers are experimenting with different ideas and making films of varied genres.

Dance Kahani – a first of its kind dance movie in Pakistan is the recent example of it, as it tells an unconventional story of hip-hop and ballet dancing, something quite unusual for the film industry feared to be heavily influenced by formula-films churning Bollywood, and joins the league of recently released independent and art films as a fresh addition.

The film has no real star power (except a cameo done by legendary film actor Nadeem Baig) as the entire cast and crew is fresh one and it relies solely on one thing: dance – the core theme of the movie. There comes the skills of the film’s director Omar Hassan who has done a tremendous job as the first timer and presented the less-known formats of dance in acceptable and pleasant way. The cinematography is also of good quality and reveals the potentials of the people behind the camera.

British-Pakistani Nizzy (Madeleine Hanna), who has a dream of becoming famous ballerina in UK, is forced by her parents to settle in Pakistan after spending there decades of their lives in abroad. She needs an escape plan and there is no other better than participating in a hip-hop dance competition with a prize money of one million rupees (really?). The problem is to have a crew of her own for which she luckily discovers street hip-hop dancer Tipu (Vernin U’chong) and makes the team with him. They hunt for the other adept dancers in the narrow streets and shops of the city and make ‘Road Crew’ comprised of street dancers including a barber and a waiter.

What follows is the predictable stream of team building, interpersonal clashes, romance (with an unwelcome entry in the crew) and rivalry with the other crew participating in the dance competition. The plot of the film is developed on some ill-conceived and unconvincing turns and twists, but these serve the purpose of creating a reasonable story arc.

The majority of the dialogues, as spoken by the female protagonist, are in English and the audience is not facilitated with Urdu subtitles. This is the weakest point of the film, as common movie watchers who have a lot to get from this blend of indie and commercial cocktail will be disappointed if the ‘beautiful face’ does not make sense to them. The length of the film is another let down, as it could have been expertly skimmed to three quarters of its total run time.

It also needs to be mentioned here that at times the film looks like a project made by some film enthusiasts for a varsity competition. The performances of most of the actors are amateurish and the dialogues sound overly done or impromptu at certain places. Every scene fades out to the dark, although the editing of dance sequences is done fine, and the dubbing does not sync well with actors’ way of speaking.

These shortcomings will make it difficult to recognize Dance Kahani as an equivalent of other indies, like Seedling, Dukhtar and Shah, which were made by more professional people with maturer approach.

Madeleine Hann plays a British Pakistani girl who is neither a full gori nor a full desi, having an identity crisis of its own. Signing a foreign actress for the role could have been debatable if she has not done justice to it. Hann spoke Urdu with great difficulty, which can be understandable by some people having such ‘gora’ cousins, but she maintained a graceful appearance on the screen and gave beautiful dance performances (wishing the last ballet was little longer in duration).

A dance movie is incomplete without good music and Dance Kahani excels here as well. All the tracks are euphonious and in line with the theme of the film. Kudos to the musicians of the film for their work!

Box Office Update: Not a single local release could shame Bolly’s ‘Sultan’

Last time we published the box office report three weeks ago with the extended weekend collections of Eid-ul-Fitr. By then the clear box office winner was Bollywood’s ‘Sultan’ which blew away the only local release ‘Sawal 700 Crore Dollars Ka’ (S7CDK), not making us surprised at all.

S7KDK could survive for only a week (9 days) on the box office, but had a decent lifetime collections (numbers below) despite being a movie as weird as its title. Momin Ali Munshi, editor, Galaxy Lollywood, reviewed the film and termed it as ‘old school Lollywood-ish’ flick and rated with 2 out of 5 stars.

Two weeks after this, two more Pakistani movies, ‘Ishq Positive’ and ‘Revenge of the Worthless’, jumped into the arena to show some muscles to ‘Sultan’ and, regretfully, in first 10 days of their running none of them even could surpass the collections of more weirdly-titled S7CDK. On the other side, ‘Sultan’ kept on minting money and became the highest grossing Bollywood film in Pakistan.

It is really hard time for local releases. Without any further rants, here are the box office numbers of the local releases and ‘Sultan’ till last Sunday (July 31).

Ishq Positive ( Review): Melodious music and strong direction make up for a lackluster script

Movie Name: Ishq Positive

Release Date: July 22, 2016

Director: Noor Bukhari

Review by: Momin Ali Munshi

‘Ishq Positive’ is a film! Whether it is a good film or a bad film is another debate but the fact remains that Noor Bukhari has succeeded in delivering a cinematic experience with her directorial debut. And given what has come out of Pakistani cinema in recent times ‘Ishq Positive’ definitely deserves a mention for the cinematic shots and filmi-ness it brought with itself. However while it succeeded on one end, a lousy script accompanied with not that great acting and a weak screenplay dampened the entire appeal of the film.

Plot

The film opens with runaway bride Rajjo ( Noor Bukhari) who escapes her impending marriage with Chaudhary ( Saud) because she does not want her marriage to be a business deal. While on the run, she quite literally runs into Wali ( Wali Hamid Khan) who for reasons unknown decides to accompany her thus giving everyone the impression that the two have eloped. Three songs and a few scenes later they both madly fall in love with each other .Oh and did I mention that Wali is engaged to the character played by Faria Bukhari who happens to be Chaudhary’s sister! What happens next well watch the film for that.

To say that the story offered nothing new and was full of cliches would be an understatement. Yes, most Pakistani films that have come out in recent times have been rehash of Bollywood flicks but they do have some sense of script and screenplay which sadly seems to be missing completely from the film. The screenplay is rather absurd , specially in the pre-interval portions where most of the script comes across as improvisation. The second half is better in terms of pacing but the ending is very predictable and the entire script is a miss.

The film is a musical and has some really well shot songs but at times even the songs come across as forced and don’t serve the story well. Coming to the dialogues well the film has a plethora of great actors on board but owing to weak dialogues the actors seem to be wasted. The only saving grace are the comic scenes which may come across as vulgar but are genuinely funny and succeed in making you laugh out loud.

Direction

While the entire film may not be that great one needs to give Noor credit for bringing back the filmi-ness that was missing from cinema. The constant debate that films look like television serials cut short, is something that you cannot use for this film. The cinematography is top notch, the angles used are great and on the whole Noor’s direction when it comes to the songs is on point. The songs have been picturized really well, and the interesting thing is that there are no foreign locations and its all Pakistan!

Acting

Noor is no newcomer to acting and she proved this with her effortless acting in the film where she played the bubbly Rajjo character to perfection. However debutants Wali and Faria need to learn quite a lot before they cement their status as actors in Lollywood. When it comes to supporting actors everyone did a fine job and this department has two stars Saud and Durdana Butt who probably had the most interesting roles and stole the show.

Music

The music of the film, as the title suggests, is definitely the highlight and is probably the best album to have come out of Pakistan in recent times. The film has something for everyone! Be it the the soulful  Rab Diyaa Rab Janay or the peppy Tera Nika Jiya, the film has a super strong music album. Moreover even the background score of the film is great and finally it looks like someone gave the background score its due importance.

Revenge of the Worthless (Review): An unimpressive film set in the backdrop of Swat insurgency

Movie Name: Revenge of the Worthless

Release Date: July 22, 2016

Director: Jamal Shah

Review by: Zeeshan Mahmood

Before finally hitting the cinemas Revenge of the Worthless (ROTW) was postponed several times, more than one could keep a count of, and the release came after Maalik controversy which antagonized some people with its stereotypical representation of certain ethnicities and politicians. So, naturally, one was skeptical of what this film did have to offer in terms of the cinematic experience and the narrative. It tried its best to tell the story of the Swat insurgency and tales of heroic people of the valley who fought against it, but it did not impress with its cinematic outlook.

ROTW establishes its non-cinematic value at the very start with blurry scenes and poor editing, which would be noticeable to even the least observant person in the audience, and it maintains the value till the end successfully. It is not the first film which was presented as a ‘film’ despite having serious technical shortcomings, such as directorial incompetence, sloppy camera work and hasty editing. We have actually gotten used to it.

Jamal Shah is a very big name of the television and art in Pakistan. He is a seasoned actor and runs a prestigious art institute ‘Hunerkada’. His debuting at the big screen with directing a film based on Swat insurgency and the restoration of the peace in the tumultuous valley carried great significance, as it was one right story to bring to the big screen. As a director he failed to leave a mark but as a scriptwriter he collected some genuinely good stories of people suffered from the menace of extremism.

The plot of the film revolves around the lives of various people living in Swat at the time Taliban gradually gained hold of the valley by exploiting the religious authority and because of the lack of government’s writ. Zarak Khan (Jamal Shah) is a progressive, resourceful and proud Pakhtoon who has taught and trained his wife and two daughters to defend their namoos (home) and on the other end of the spectrum is Malik Qahar Khan (Qazi Zubair) who hates his son Gulalai (Abdul Raheem) for being transgender and disgrace to the family. Among all is the ferocious and maneuvering Zarar Khan (Ayub Khoso) under whom leadership the Taliban movement spreads like fire in the forest and engulfs the whole valley.

The cast of the film consists of both the seasoned actors and the new comers/adventurers. The most notable names include Firdous Jamal and Ayub Khoso who saved the day amid serious directorial shortcomings, as expected from the veteran actors like them. The performances by all other actors were superficial and annoying at times. The Lollywood diva Noor had a special appearance in the film but she had only one line to speak in the whole film.

The similar background score was used throughout the film, without considering the gravity of the situation. The Pashtu song was a great addition to the film. However, a ridiculous rap by Abdul Raheem, shown as a backstory of Gulalai, made no sense at all.

5 reasons why the ‘Teri Meri Love Story’ trailer is BAD!

To say that ‘Teri Meri Love Story’ was one of the most eagerly awaited films of the year would not be wrong. The film had a great ensemble cast, promising music, great production and seemed to be a commercial entertainer which would set the box office on fire. Interestingly I even visited the sets of the film and was highly impressed with what I saw and the film came across like a fun-filled ride. However all my expectations were shattered when I got a chance to see the official trailer of the film which was released today. Why you ask? Well  here are five reasons why I think the trailer is BAD!

  1. Either the color grading is not done or whoever did it was not really concerned with the final outlook. Anyhow the film comes across as a super dull affair, lacking the colors!
teri meri love story stillBefore and After for one of the stills which I edited using my phones editor. See the difference?
    tmls stilledited
  2. Can we all pretend that we did not see Uzma Khan doing whatever she was doing in the first song. The cringe worthy performance is not something we expected from either the actress or the new age Lollywood team of the film.
    vlcsnap-2016-07-23-01h13m17s861
  3.  The film has funny guy Mohsin Abbas who is known for his great comic timing while the director Jawad Bashir is also for his command at the genre but unfortunately the humor in the trailer falls flat and fails to elicit laughter.
  4. Ushna Shah is pretty and Omer Shahzad is hot, but the song at the end featuring the two is just blah! Yes they look picture perfect, but hey its a film and when they move lets just say not happening! Oh, there is a slight possibility its a fun goofy song where she is playing him but otherwise its just weird.
    vlcsnap-2016-07-23-01h14m35s918
  5. Sadly the film comes across as a tele-film and the filminess is very evidently missing. Be it due to the shots or the editing the film does not look like the commercial masala film which was promised by the director.

Anyhow I hope that its only the trailer which is not that great and the film will be a full on entertainer. Oh, and here is the trailer for those who have not seen it yet. What do you guys think?
