Badshah Begum Sets Benchmark For Quality Production

The Pakistani television industry has often found itself being scrutinized by all those who wish to see content that is different. While some yearn for the ace writing and direction present in the shows of the past that kept the previous generation thoroughly engaged, others break out in cyber protest, demanding content that can compete with that which we see on an international scale.

Such projects, albeit welcome, come with their own set of risks. They may be greatly chastised by the same audience that demands change, or they may suffer, by not getting the kind of attention they deserve. While this opens up a conversation regarding the relationship between viewers and the narratives with which they engage, the directive today is to talk about one show that is, in many ways, breaking stereotypes and embracing a new direction.

Badshah Begum: A Little About The Project

With Khizer Idrees grasping the directorial reigns, the show has been written by Saji Gul, and produced by Rafay Rashdi and Momina Duraid. The plot is thoroughly political, in the sense that it follows family rivalries where the stakes are incredibly high, with a maddening lust for power dividing siblings.

Set in the fictional Peeraan Pur, the television series is embedded with some of the finest writing, direction, and performances that one can experience this year. The cast includes Zara Noor Abbas, Farhan Saeed, Ali Rehman Khan, Yasir Hussain, Shahzad Nawaz, Komal Meer and Saman Ansari.

Be The Change You Wish To See?

Amidst hue and cry over the need for better content, Badshah Begum rises like a phoenix and takes the challenge head-on. One can tell that the television series has been brilliantly crafted, with a lot of thought being put into the overall production. Creating a universe from scratch – which is captured through breathtaking cinematography – in which the characters fit perfectly, all while also empowering a multi-star cast to give some of their best performances on-screen, is not an easy feat. However, the team of Badshah Begum manages to achieve this, with even the newer faces shining immensely, and holding their own in front of already cemented actors.

Badshah Begum takes a much-needed break from showcasing the arguments in kitchens and bedrooms that Pakistani television tends to churn out regularly. Much-needed relief is provided by the series, which spares us the never-ending melodrama surrounding the disagreements between mothers-in-law and their daughters-in-law. Overtly misogynistic themes and interactions take a welcome back seat, and it is clear that the series was created for a far greater purpose: to prove that Pakistan is at par with global content creation, in every way, shape, and form.

Should You Watch Badshah Begum?

One tires, eventually, of safe projects that do not challenge our minds, or tickle our sense of imagination. For an entire team to have birthed this fantastical world, and to have delivered, with such finesse, is a clear-cut message to all those who dare to dream and take risks: Pakistan is ready to begin embracing change. Watching Badshah Begum is a surreal experience that not only keeps one hooked in anticipation, but also inspires one to take a more creative approach with their own ideation.

The onus is now on audiences, many of whom have shown immense appreciation for the project. Moreover, the onus also falls upon others in the industry to break out of the status quo, and willingly dash towards untapped potential that lies within our reach, just above the horizon.

Maula Jatt Trailer Hints At Gritty, Fascinating Origin Story

Waar director Bilal Lashari’s ambitious magnum opus “The Legend of Maula Jatt” has finally dropped its long awaited trailer. The film enjoys the rare status of a cinematic outing that’s universally and anxiously awaited by film aficionados for multiple substantial reasons. The director of historical action flick Waar, offering his second directorial after a decade, with superstars like Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan coming together onscreen after their classic drama Humsafar, and the culturally iconic character of Maula Jatt being retold in a grand manner, are a few of the many credentials attached to the film. This brings an understandably immense hype to the film and attaches extremely high expectations to it.

Maula Jatt: The Trailer

The two-and-a-half minute promotional video and its captions point to a possible origin story of Maula Jatt, where he is depicted as a fierce prizefighter with a tortured past looking for vengeance against his arch nemesis, Noori Natt, the most feared warrior in the land of Punjab. The trailer is dark and gritty from start to finish, with its captivating visuals and sound design. There are loads of action sequences and it introduces the main characters in an intriguing manner. There is blood and gore, and, embedded amongst all this lies a hint of a romantic sequence between the two leads, Fawad and Mahira.

The trailer is not only a dark visual delight following the template of Lashari’s debut film, but it also features high-octane dialogue penned by the legendary Nasir Adeeb (he also wrote the original Maula Jatt). There are intense looks of a scar-faced Fawad Khan, the fiery eyed Hamza, and the intense Gohar Rasheed. The show seems to belong to the leading male characters as the ladies seem to have a hard time with their dialogue delivery from whatever is shown in the trailer. Humaima’s sensual snippets with Fawad Khan are extremely hot, though.

The visual effects, sound and set design, costumes, and action sequences keep you hooked and want to see the trailer multiple times. Jhelum city’s historical Rohtas fort is intelligently recreated and extensively utilized in the film. There is also, however, a feel of outdatedness to the trailer as it took 10 years for the film to complete and release and some keen viewers might be able to note it. This doesn’t mean that the trailer is not grand and full of adrenaline punches.

Cast And Crew

Directed by Bilal Lashari, The Legend of Maula Jatt also stars Humaima Malick, Mirza Gohar Rasheed, Faris Shafi, Ali Azmat, Nayyer Ejaz, Shafqat Cheema, Raheela Agha, Zia Khan and Saima Baloch. The Punjabi film is being produced by Ammara Hikmat’s Encyclomedia and Lashari Films. The distribution will be done by Nadeem Mandvivalla under Mandviwalla Entertainment who previously distributed blockbusters like Titanic, Avatar, and Teefa In Trouble. Bilal Lashari has also co-penned the story, dialogues, and screenplay, and has also taken care of photography and editing of the film. That’s a lot for one person, we must say.

The Legend of Maula Jatt will release on 13th October in cinemas and it might just be the film that Pakistani cinema has been waiting to give a much needed kick after the blows of pandemic.

Exclusive: Farhan Saeed & Urwa Hocane No Longer Together In Meri Shehzadi Diana

Belonging to the media industry, and finding love within it, all while under the scrutinizing eye of the public can be quite a daunting task. Be it speculation, hectic work schedules, or combating fame; all these are irksome factors one may face, all while one’s fans cling on for morsels of personal news. Perhaps, Farhan Saeed & Urwa Hocane now find themselves at the end of this scrutiny, with regards to a project in which the pair was to star.

Farhan Saeed & Urwa Hocane In Meri Shehzadi Diana

The Mere Humsafar and Badshah Begum actor spoke about his upcoming projects in an interview, where he revealed that he would be working with Urwa Hocane, his wife, on Meri Shehzadi Diana. While the nature of this relationship on-screen remained a mystery, fans were overjoyed to hear that the two would star together soon.

However, whispers on the grapevine now suggest that the project, set to be directed by Qasim Ali Mureed, previously was going to star Farhan Saeed, Imran Abbas, and Urwa Hocane. However, recently there seems to be some form of change brewing.

A Change In Plans

In an upsetting revelation, Farhan Saeed will no longer be seen starring alongside Urwa Hocane in Meri Shehzadi Diana. Undoubtedly a massive setback for fans who were rooting to see the duo together, patience seems to be on the cards for onlookers, alongside a steady need to be braced for further change.

Whispers also hint towards a possibility of Imran Abbas no longer being affiliated with the project in his previous role, with Ali Rehman Khan stepping in as a possible replacement. However, Imran Abbas may just be replacing Farhan Saeed, if these whispers are to be believed. Another actor in the talks to step in in place of Farhan is Bilal Abbas Khan, who audiences may see star in this project.

Regardless of who steps in and sees this project to fruition, it is indeed a huge blow for all those who anticipated watching Farhan Saeed & Urwa Hocane star together once again. Let us see how this unfolds further.

Everything You Need To Know About Sajal Aly Playing Fatima Jinnah

We know her, we love her, and she is, undoubtedly, one of the finest actors we have in the industry right now. The queen of hearts, and ace actor Sajal Aly is all set to play Fatima Jinnah in an upcoming series.

Sajal Aly Playing Fatima Jinnah: What We Know

A key socio-political figure, Fatima Jinnah spent her life towards the creation and progress of Pakistan as a nation. While she is often referred to as the Mader-e-Millat, she was so much more than that, given that she was a fierce, integral cog in the overall political machinery of the nation at the time. She remains to be one of the most iconic figures, and a series paying homage to her is one that is, without a doubt, long overdue, and highly anticipated.

Sajal Aly will be playing Fatima Jinnah for a majority of the series, representing her in the era of independence. Samiya Mumtaz will play Fatima Jinnah in a post-independence Pakistan, and Sundus Farhan will play the leader in a pre-independence subcontinent. The writer and director of the series, Danial K. Afzal, opened up about casting Sajal Aly in particular for this role in an interview with Dawn Images, calling her “an international icon,” also referring to her project with Jemima Goldsmith (What’s Love Got To Do With It?)

Other Details

The series, which is being made by a new production house called Aur Studios, may have a TV release, but is mainly being targeted towards an OTT audience. The teaser is apparently all set to hit screens, but the prologue will release on 14th August. The teaser for the prologue consists of Bombay, the brutal aftermath of the Partition on trains, and Fatima Jinnah standing for elections.

Dananeer Mobeen will also be seen in the series as a journalist from Bombay. Afzal also confirms in the interview that there will be three seasons, given the three eras of independence, with 15 episodes in each season.

We can’t wait to watch this compelling narrative about such a pivotal figure in the history of our motherland. This is a tale that must be told, and with all the details that have been revealed, we hope the project is as promising as it sounds.

Phaatak Bravely Exposes Dark, Taboo Underbelly Of Society

While most content bombards us with the same stale narratives, the youth mostly is in search of platforms that bring about entertaining and relatable content. Such an OTT platform that has emerged is Pikchur TV. The streaming platform was recently launched with an aim to bridge the gap between the youth and cinema. With the same aim in mind, the platform recently launched a new series, titled, Phaatak.

Streaming on Pikchur TV, Phaatak has been excellently directed by Sikandar Vincent Khan. Produced by Zayan Agha the series stars Sarmad Aftab Jadraan, Amna Ilyas, Saleem Meiraj, Sohail Sameer, Nayyar Ejaz, Saad Naseem, and Rubab Ali in pivotal roles.

Phaatak: The Story

Phaatak revolves around the life of Mani, a small drug peddler, who comes at a crossroads with the rest of the world after getting caught by the police. Once in the clutches of the inspector, Mani is manipulated by the officer to sell drugs for him. When free of him, Mani lands into further trouble when he comes face to face with another, bigger drug dealer. The story revolves around Mani’s struggle to free himself of their clutches and discover himself in the process. However, Mani alone isn’t the lead character because each and every character has a story of their own to tell.

Phaatak dares to tell the stories that occur behind closed doors of houses of the elite and those on the lower rungs of society.

The Review

Phaatak represents the dark and bitter side of our law enforcement agencies who, when they misuse their power, try to sweep everything under the rug. Phaatak takes a plunge and risks exposing the dirty underbelly of society. On the whole, nothing in Phaatak seems superficial. Instead of coming across as a fictitious story, Phaatak convinces its audience of its authenticity by bringing across a relatable story.

Sarmed Aftab Jadraan as Mani is not only superb, but very realistic and convincing. He convinces the audience of his emotions with just a few words. Saleem Meiraj makes an impact with his performance, while Amna Ilyas plays a powerful role delivering dialogues that are the crux of the entire show.

Box Office Numbers: Foul Play, Or Legit?

Three weeks ago, the Pakistan industry saw business flourish. Three big films graced the silver screen; London Nahi Jaunga, Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad, and Thor: Love & Thunder. The films opened to an astounding response overall and for the first time in a long time, the industry felt alive. The box office numbers game, though, then took an ugly turn and the official figures for especially the local movies started coming in with a lot of suspicion regarding their verifications. Please find below the milestones touched by both the films over the past few weeks:

Box Office: London Nahi Jaunga

7 days total (26.6 crores official, 24 crores sources)

10 days total (35.21 crores official, 32 crores sources)

14 days total (40.1 crores official, 40 crores sources)

20 days total (47.2 crores official, 44.1crores)

Box Office: Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad

7 days total (20 crores official, 11 crores sources)

10 days total (28 crores official, 14.9 crores sources)

14 days total (37 crores official, 18 crores sources)

Analysis

The question here arises that LNJ is running on nearly similar reported numbers with sources, but the difference in QAZ is a bit alarming. The basic answer to this question is that any number given by anyone in the industry currently is not verifiable.

Overseas numbers, that have a stark difference can be sourced through a website called comScore. This is a worldwide platform that tracks numbers for people in different parts of the world, and to get these numbers, one needs to be subscribed to the website. In Pakistan, distributors and trade analysts claim to give official numbers from the website. These numbers cannot be verified by anyone and have to be believed at face value.

The best conclusion that one can derive from this whole scenario is that whatever numbers are being reported, it is good news for the industry that we are earning money. The fudging of numbers is unfortunately a common practice globally, especially in our neighboring country as comScore is not available there too. Our local and overseas numbers cannot be verified. The official numbers of overseas coming from producers and sources have to be taken at face value.

We would want to congratulate and enjoy this success, even if we may not know the entirety of the truth to the numbers. We would pray that this results in more movies being produced and makers find the belief to make good cinema. As for the numbers, the truth cannot be properly unraveled and yes, the films are a big success, but the magnitude of success will remain a suspense.

Best of luck to our cinema now and we hope that films keep on making money.

Fans Draw Parallels Between Bakhtawar And Parizaad

There was a time when actresses on screen were restricted to being roti dhoti becharis. One can’t deny the fact that even today, our patriarchal society enjoys watching such content. Resultantly, seven out of ten dramas are laced with the oppressed woman formula to fetch huge TRPs. On the other side of the story, some actors have surpassed such stereotypes, and taken up roles that challenge and shape their craft. One such actress is Yumna Zaidi who, with every project, is surprising viewers with her impeccable performances. Her recent outing, Bakhtawar, features her as a fearless protagonist, on a mission to fulfill her dreams against all odds.

Bakhtawar: The Role Of A Lifetime

After a haphazard first episode that had rapid proceedings, the director (Shahid Shafaat) maintained a steady pace in the second episode. Instead of handling a handful of issues, he balanced it out with how Bakhtawar struggles to get a job. She refuses to work for twelve hours a day to get just seven hundred rupees in return.

One after the other, she gets rejected in her interviews. And when she gets a job as a bus hostess, she witnesses barbaric men who can go to any extent to harass women. The episode ends on a cliffhanger note when Bakhtawar transforms herself into a guy to battle the chauvinistic society.

It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Yumna, in the most challenging role of her career as Bakhtawar, leaves us awestruck. She fulfills the demand of every scene like a fish takes to water. She looks beautiful when required and sans makeup where necessary. She makes the viewers happy in her happiness and cry with her helplessness. And that’s the quality of a good actor, Yumna stuns in every single frame. Just two episodes down, we can’t wait to see more.

The Parizaad Comparison

There was a huge debate on Twitter with Bakhtawar being compared to Ahmed Ali Akbar’s Parizaad. Not exactly, but to an extent, the premise matches Parizaad’s. For instance, the plot solely revolves around the protagonist, and the rest of the cast members help in taking the narrative forward.

If we analyze past facts, Parizaad also picked up after a slow start and went to become a rage. As mentioned before, this seems like the role of a lifetime for Yumna. The case was the same for Ahmed Ali Akbar, with Parizaad becoming an icon in recent times. Thus, the question must be asked: will Bakhtawar repeat history?
