TV Trends In 2023: Hits, Misses, And Hopes For 2024

2023 has been a wild rollercoaster ride for Pakistani television, leaving us awestruck and glued to our screens. Some of course did not live up to the expectations.

The year kicked off with ‘Tere Bin’, a sensation that spread like wildfire, garnering billions of views and setting hearts racing across the nation and beyond. Green Entertainment also made a grand entrance, injecting a fresh wave of excitement into the industry. And let’s not forget the power-packed performances of Sajal Aly and Bilal Abbas in Nadeem Baig’s ‘Kuch Ankahi’, weaving a tapestry of social drama interlaced with pure entertainment. How can we forget to mention ‘Jannat Se Aagay’ when talking about social dramas of this year. The drama blended social issues within the theme of morning shows.

With dramas flooding in, we’ve sifted through the chaos to pinpoint trends we hope to see more of and bid farewell to as the new year approaches. Let’s unravel the highlights, the drama, and the juicy trends that rocked our TV screens in 2023.

Trends we would like to see

Introducing original and unique storylines

2023 witnessed a dramatic shift in narratives, welcoming stories straight out of our wildest Netflix daydreams. Take, for instance, the release of the two seasons of ‘Fairytale‘, serving up a relatable platter for the youth with an integration of romance, underlining issues faced by the youth, and diving into a couple’s life post-honeymoon phase. Then, cue the magic of ‘Kabli Pulao’, whisking us away into the enchanting world of Barbeena and Haji Mushtaq, where cultures collided, and the raw power of human connection took centre stage in an intercultural marriage tale. ‘College Gate’ didn’t shy away either, diving deep into the struggles of today’s youth and striking a chord with its authenticity. And let’s not forget the bone-chilling thrill ride brought to us by the Siyah Series, diving headfirst into the eerie world of horror.

These dramas weren’t just entertainment; they were a testament to the evolving landscape of diverse and gripping storytelling that’s finally making waves in our local drama scene. Needless to say, this is one trend we hope never dies down. Let that creativity flow.

Embracing imaginative direction and elevated production

Pakistani dramas are evolving, aiming not just for storytelling but an immersive experience. Take for instance ‘Serial Killer’ on Green Entertainment, kicking off each episode with an infectious opening theme song that hooks you from the start. Then, ‘Standup Girl’ steps up the game with its engaging use of the piece-to-camera technique, offering a fresh narrative perspective. We also see Ayeza Khan winning the audience’s hearts with her styling game in ARY Digital’s drama ‘Mein’. All these elements create an engaging and immersive experience for the audience.

Our drama makers can lend examples from popular shows that already have a nod of approval from the Pakistani audience. Take for instance Kdramas like ‘It’s Okay Not to Be Okay’ or ‘Mr. Queen’ nailed it with their animation game, and it’s high time we borrow some of that sparkle.

Welcoming fresh faces and embracing diverse casts for inclusive storytelling

Nothing quite matches the charisma of watching our favourite actors breathe life into new characters on screen. While we adore our favourites taking on diverse roles, the thrill of welcoming fresh faces remains unparalleled.

Enter Sabeena Farooq, whose portrayal as an antagonist in ‘Tere Bin’ and subsequent lead role in ‘Kabli Pulao’ stole the spotlight, showcasing exceptional versatility. Then, there’s Hamza Sohail, whose rapid rise saw Fairytale capturing hearts in record time—talent clearly runs deep in his genes. The duo, Khushhal Khan and Dananeer Mobeen left an indelible mark in HUM TV‘s ‘Mohabbat Gumshuda Meri’. Their arrival injects a refreshing perspective, invigorating our screens with boundless potential.

Their breakout performances infuse the drama scene with vibrancy, and we eagerly anticipate more stellar acts lighting up our screens in 2024.

Trends we wouldn’t like to see

Dialing down on-screen violence

We could see this coming, didn’t we? No matter how frequently and with how much conviction the audience and critics seem to condone violence, of any kind, on television, we just can’t see the end of it. 2023 marked another year where we see the characters on television-especially female protagonists-getting slapped left, right, and centre.

The recent slap in the currently airing drama ‘Mannat Murad’ is an example where Iqra Aziz’s character gets slapped by her husband Murad, in front of their entire family as she refuses to apologize to her mother-in-law. Mannat does not hold back and slaps her husband. Nevertheless, the impact of the slap was registered by the audience. How can we forget ‘Tere Bin’ — in one of the initial episodes, Murtasim slaps Meerub which results in her fainting. These are just the examples from the popular dramas of 2023. The list is certainly very long.

It’s high time that this trend is eliminated from our television screens, for this just results in desensitizing the audience against violence.

A shift away from clichéd, toxic characters, and storylines to foster progressive narratives

From toxic mothers-in-laws to evil sisters-the portrayal of evil characters knows no bounds when it comes to television dramas. Case in point is the character of Falak in the drama serial ‘Ehsaan Faramosh’. The character of Falak is characterized by greed and envy, whose pervasive jealousy wreaks havoc on the lives of those around her. Unfortunately, the drama serial ‘Mannat Murad’ is no exception as we see the character of Razia. Played by Irsa Ghazal, Razia is a possessive mother who is not ready to let go of her son which results in creating misunderstandings between her son and daughter-in-law.

Let’s take a break from these evil characters and toxic storylines that have become a staple plot of our dramas. It wouldn’t hurt to introduce characters like Rumi’s mother-in-law and sister-in-law from the drama ‘Ishqiya’.

Steering away from dragging plots and unnecessary melodrama for a more engaging watch

How often has this happened to you that you will tune in to watch a drama religiously and then after few weeks what’s left of the engaging plot is flashbacks, repeated conversations, and the frequent running of the OST in the background? We have been a victim of this too often to count now.

Take the example of the drama tackling the issue of child marriage in our society ‘Mayi Ri’. The drama continued to depict the torture and mental abuse of the female lead with some instances of relief as the romance between the lead pair continued to bloom. ‘Mujhe Pyaar Hua Tha’ was no exception. The drama went on without any significant development in the plot, resting on the power of the star cast and the OST that garnered a high viewership.

It’s pertinent to take a break from dragging storylines, for our audience has evolved with an influx of content globally produced. Kudos to series like ‘Jurm’ that followed the miniseries format and received appreciation from the audience.

We hope 2024 marks the beginning of brilliant storytelling in the Pakistani television industry that is not only acknowledged and recognized in Pakistan but is also held in high regard internationally, paving the way for more recognition.

ARY Digital Announces Sequel ‘Baby Baji Ki Bahuein’: A Fresh Take On Family Dynamics And Domestic Politics

In the era of dramatic love stories and intense grand setups, one drama tackled the basics of the joint family system and proved that simple family drama and domestic politics can also win on TV. ARY Digital’s ‘Baby Baji’ ruled in the middle of this year, so much so that even after its end, people could not get over the realistic narrative and situations that were shown in it.

Abdullah Seja’s, IDream Entertainment Productions who created the original ‘Baby Baji’ hinted at a sequel to the show keeping the massive success in consideration. However, people were quite disoriented about the news as there was no official discussion on public forums regarding the same.

Official Announcement Of Baby Baji Ki Bahuein

ARY Digital has officially announced the sequel of ‘Baby Baji’ in an unexpected post today which is the first teaser of the show. The teaser shows the late parents Baby Baji and her husband seemingly worried about their offspring and their wellbeing. The entire family is then introduced, who claim that their story is still left to be heard.

The announcement of the sequel which is this time titled ‘Baby Baji Ki Bahuein‘ was a little casual as compared to that of the recently announced ‘Tere Bin 2′. However, it is a brave attempt by the makers to relaunch a family show that too as a soap serial which also alters the caliber and general perspective of 7 PM soaps on a wider scale.

Adding more to the scenario, the most popular character of the franchise Azra played by veteran actress Javeria Saud is returning to television as a producer. JJS Productions which turned to JJSI production after the birth of Javeria and Saud’s son Ibrahim, is coming back in action with a new show on Green Entertainment titled ‘Mohabbat Satrangi Hai.’ JJSI has the most popular and longest-running soap ‘Yeh Zindagi Hai’ to its credit which aired on Geo TV from 2008 till 2013.

Summing Up

There is an evolution coming to television as we are brave enough to bring sequels yet again. We do remember sequels have been a part of our television content and even series were made with up to 3 or 4 seasons. Well, 2024 already seems to be arriving with much more drama and grandness with these amazing shows hitting out TV screens.

The ensemble cast is indeed very diverse and though we shot this film in just 4-5 days, it was a rollercoaster ride with lots of laughs and fun.”

Amar expressed admiration for director Angeline Malik, highlighting her versatility and the rare diversity she brings to the industry. The actress commended Malik’s ability to navigate different genres with finesse. “We have very few female directors and very few offer so much diversity. Angeline is one of those”

Comedic Genre And Special Elements

Confirming the telefilm’s comical tone, Amar assured audiences of a fun-filled one-and-a-half-hour experience. She hinted at unexpected twists and urged viewers to enjoy it like they would any male cop film, promising a night of laughter. With the shoot already completed, the telefilm is set to hit air soon on HUM TV, promising viewers a delightful and entertaining experience.

‘Ijazat’ Marks The Return Of Mehwish Hayat On Television In A Romantic Telefilm, Along With HSY

Get your popcorn ready because ARY Digital is unleashing a tornado of entertainment with its latest telefilm, ‘Ijazat’. Hold on tight as the screen welcomes the powerhouse combo of the ever-adored Mehwish Hayat and the renowned fashion designer, Hassan Sheheryar Yasin (HSY). This dynamic duo is all set to sizzle together for the first time on the silver screen.

It’s a treat to see Mehwish Hayat’s return to the television screen after 7 years hiatus. She was last seen in ‘Dil Lagi‘ in 2016, after which she made a shift towards the big screen. While she has conquered hearts with her stellar performances in blockbuster hits like ‘Punjab Nahi Jaungi’, ‘Load Wedding’, and ‘London Nahi Jaunga’, HSY, known for his fashion empire, is making waves in acting after captivating audiences in the film ‘Ishrat Made in China’ and the drama series ‘Pehli Si Muhabbat’.

The Plot

‘Ijazat,’ directed by Ahmed Bhatti and penned by Faiza Iftikhar, is a story of two individuals who fall in love as they carry the overwhelming burden of their heartbreak.

The trailer of the telefilm dropped today, teasing a tale that begins with HSY’s character reminiscing about lost love, Lina. Mehwish Hayat’s character, resembling HSY’s past flame, sparks a fresh romance, but complications arise. As their connection blooms, Mehwish’s character, Rubab, feels overshadowed. She suspects HSY’s affection stems from her resemblance to his former love and not genuine feelings for her. The trailer tantalizes with questions, as the two central characters go through turmoil and emotional baggage that haunts them.

Mehwish will be playing two roles in this project. As evident from the teasers, we see the actress in two polar opposite appearances, so that’s something to look forward to.

An interesting element that caught our attention was the cover image of the telefilm. The collage with different pictures of Mehwish Hayat and HSY posing together, gave us fun Turkish drama poster vibes. It’s good to see a creative effort put into designing the poster.

Telefilms have long been a delightful staple on our television screens, offering a pleasant dose of entertainment. Often, these productions gravitate towards the genres of romance and comedy, and ‘Ijazat‘ seems to embrace the former. It’s a refreshing sight to witness a telefilm like ‘Ijazat‘ grace our screens, allowing us to relish the performances of renowned stars from the comfort of our homes, all without the need for a cinema ticket while we settle in with our popcorn.

This upcoming telefilm boasts a stellar cast and benefits from the expertise of director Ahmed Bhatti, known for his work on projects like ‘Ghissi Pitti Mohabbat‘. Additionally, the talented Faiza Iftikhar, with an impressive repertoire of dramas, films, and telefilms under her belt, including popular works like ‘Prem Gali’ and ‘Pehli Si Muhabbat’, adds to the anticipation surrounding ‘Ijazat’. With such seasoned professionals involved, the odds of success for this telefilm appear notably higher.

Saba Qamar’s ‘Serial Killer’: A Gripping Desi Murder Mystery

Are you craving to watch a suspense thriller that’ll keep your mind racing to unravel the who, why, and how? Look no further, for Green Entertainment’s new project ‘Serial Killer’ offers just that.

Featuring Saba Qamar as the lead protagonist, the drama serial weaves a tale of mystery and intrigue in its first episode. It captures the audience’s excitement, as the episode focuses on setting the premise and establishing the central characters. The drama is written by Umera Ahmed and directed by Fahad Noor.

Let’s dive straight into the plot.

Serial Killer delivers a gripping introduction

Spoilers Ahead!

Taking a page out of the book of numerous murder mystery and suspense thriller shows, ‘Serial Killer’ opens with an eerie and unsettling scene. We see a man sitting on a bench, most likely in a park, illuminated only by the lights around it. He awaits to meet a woman wearing a black veil, with only her red heels in sight.

If you have watched enough murder mysteries your sixth sense warns you that something ominous is going to unfold. It does not take much longer to prove us correct. The mysterious woman, who is seen flirting with the guy, with her eyes on his camera, reiterates that something is wrong. As she offers him juice, our instincts scream telling us to snatch that plastic cup away from his hands. Alas, we are proven correct, and the man dies an instant death. We see the veiled woman taking the camera and leaving the crime scene, with her identity still a mystery to the audience.

Cut to, we see Saba Qamar making an appearance. The actress has taken on the role of SP Sarah Sikander in the drama, a Fulbright scholar who has returned from the United States of America after completing her education. We see the sequence where she is joining the special branch. On her first visit, we see a real-life depiction of the prevailing sexism and discrimination prevalent in the workforce in Pakistan. As Sarah attempts to meet the police officer in charge she is hailed with taunts and is evidently bullied before the realization of the police officers that she is their boss. This depiction underlined the frequent abuse of power we see in our daily lives.

Of course, when it’s a Umera Ahmed script it’s a given that the drama is going to focus on a social issue and give an important message, relevant to a current issue. This element is also present in the drama ‘Serial Killer’, as we see an evident focus on corruption and the negligence of our police force in dealing with crime in the country.

The central themes

The story will unravel as we see the professional and personal life of Sarah Sikander and the hindrances she overcomes with her conviction. As always, Saba Qamar has opted for a role with conviction and strength. We do get hints that the drama is going to centre around Sarah’s attempts, on her part, to transform the workings and operations of her department and branch in the police by setting an example. From the teasers, we also see a blooming romance between Danial Raheel and Saba Qamar’s character. It is safe to say there is a lot to look forward to.

The drama’s premiere tantalizes viewers with the focal mystery driving its storyline. It opens with a woman, her identity concealed beneath a dupatta, arriving at a bus stop carrying a suitcase. After an intense wait, the tension culminates when the authorities finally open the suitcase, revealing a grim discovery—a lifeless body inside. This case is handed over to Sarah. While Faiza Gillani, playing an unspecified character, hasn’t yet appeared, the teaser for the next episode hints at her role as Babra, a model/actress whose story intertwines with the unfolding murder investigation. Although the debut episode doesn’t divulge many details, it lays the groundwork for a plot that is expected to weave between past and present as Sarah probes the mysterious circumstances behind the murder case and the other murders linked to it while we see the unfolding of Babra’s story.

It’s worth appreciating here the attempt by the director and the editorial team to give us an opening theme in ‘Serial Killer’. The title sequence includes an introduction to all the actors in the drama with the OST running in the background. The drama stars a talented pool of actors including Saba Qamar, Sabeena Farooq, Danial Raheel, Faiza Gillani, Amna Malik, Shah Fahad, Ahmed Randhawa, Fahad Hashmi, Ali Hasan, Sabeena Farooq, Sarmad Aftab Jadran.

The magnetic pull of star power

What Saba Qamar has done over the years is what very few artists manage to achieve in their lifetime i.e. building trust in the hearts of the audience, so much so that they blindly have faith in the project in which the actress stars. ‘Serial Killer’ is no exception. As Saba takes on this role, we have blind faith that the story has substance, and we are in for a treat.

Our verdict

In certain scenes, the director deserves commendation for his attention to detail, capturing moments that resonate with authenticity. Take, for instance, the bustling bus stop framed by a chai wala and the presence of a rickshaw, instantly grounding the setting in a Pakistani backdrop and infusing that delightful desi touch. However, there were some instances where the direction faltered, causing certain scenes to feel disjointed and repetitive, detracting a bit from the overall impact.

Nevertheless, the premiere episode hints at an exhilarating and promising thriller. Yet, it merely scratches the surface of what’s in store for viewers. The exceptional cast and their performances set high expectations, leaving us eagerly anticipating a captivating desi-inspired murder mystery and suspense genre that promises to enthral and meet our craving for thrilling entertainment.

Pakistani Cinema In 2023: A Year Of Triumphs, Surprises, And International Recognition

As 2023 concludes, we are left with a notable lot of artistry provided to Pakistani television and cinema territories. We might not want to recollect some of the disastrous happenings in the entertainment industry. However, we have been served reasons to celebrate the victorious progress of Pakistani Cinema which can confidently called the ‘revival of Lollywood’.

What we can take away from analyzing the film industry is the evident decline of commercialism, quality content, and of course, quantity of content, following the rise of other industries including Bollywood and regional cinemas right from the beginning of the 2000s.

While there are multiple reasons for the demotion of the field, there have been risk-takers and passionate strugglers who finally brought Pakistani cinema to a position where filmmakers are less afraid and more confident about bringing their stories to life, as we witnessed throughout the year.

Delightful and Courageous Releases of 2023

Daadal‘, ‘Money Back Guarantee‘, and ‘Huey Tum Ajnabi‘ to begin with, were the door openers for local cinemas. Even though, there were some releases earlier in the year too, such as Abu Aleeha’s ‘Shotcut’ and the Punjabi film ‘Super Punjabi’. The former titles managed to grab attention for several reasons more than the latter. Film buffs; both viewers and critics were served with diverse content on Eid with a period piece based on 1971’s Dhaka Fall ‘Huey Tum Ajnabi’, a non-run-of-the-mil woman-centric thriller ‘Daadal’ and a smart satirical social commentary ‘Money Back Guarantee’.

However, what works for some, might not work for others. And this is what we observed during the beginning of this cinematic rise in 2023. Despite Fawad Khan’s return after ‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’, the release of ‘Money Back Guarantee’ could not prove itself to be a blockbuster or even near to the massive success of Khan’s TLoMJ. Viewers and critics disliked the less cohesive flow of the film, which turned out to be the biggest reason for its failure. Yet ‘Huey Tum Ajnabi’ and ‘Daadal’ did justice within the mediocre numbers due to their lesser commercial nature of storylines and promotional values.

Later in June, Abu Aleeha’smuch-talked-about ‘Kukri: An Untold Story of Serial Killer Javed Iqbal’ finally made its way to the local cinemas post a series of barriers and controversies. The film is supposedly one of the most courageous attempts to talk about a real-life serial killer and sex offender who terrorized Lahore in the 1990s. The film has the privilege of gathering decent reviews along with awards of Best Director in the UK Film Festival before its release in Pakistan. ‘Kukri’ gained a satisfactory collection at the box office on its local release on 2 June 2023.

There has been an unsaid rule which had become quite a norm, that either local commercial films will get released on Eid, or simply not get released at all. Fortunately, we are now seeing a positive change as filmmakers are daring to release films on non-festive days too. But this Eid-ul-Azha was no different too. We had a good number of six films released and most viewers and critics were simply not buying the thought process behind this decision by filmmakers.

Wahaj Ali starrer anthology ‘Teri Meri Kahaaniyan’, Syra and Shehroz’s ‘Babylicious’, and animated film ‘Allahyar and the 100 Flowers of God’ were the big titles along with ‘VIP’, ‘Madaari’, and ‘Aar Paar’. It indeed looked like a festival for cinema lovers as there was a flood of content that too from our very own creators. While TMK did a decent job at the theatres, others also gathered average numbers at the box office. These releases had to compete with Hollywood franchises like ‘Barbie’, ‘Mission Impossible‘, and Christopher Nolen’s ‘Oppenheimer‘ which were simultaneous releases till the end of July.

Year-End Surprises at The Local Cinemas

As if there was a lack of films this year, the audience and critics are now being presented with some interesting films at theatres across the country. Including Humayoun Ashraf, Shamoon Abbasi and Ayesha Omer starrer ‘Dhai Chal‘ released earlier this month. The movie revolves around Balochistan and the struggles faced by its local population to keep peace and harmony. Another release was Ahmed Ali Akbar and Resham’s ‘Gunjal’, which is a brave attempt to showcase the tragic story of young activist Iqbal Masih who voiced against child labour in the country.  The film became quite relevant as Pakistan witnessed the case of child maid Rizwana in the recent month.

Another recent release is Usman Mukhtar and Ushna Shah’s ‘Chikkar’. The layered story of ‘Chikkar’ promises to delve deeper into the unsettling realities of society and the dirt (as the name suggests) of misuse of power and protocols.

Bollywood vs Pakistani Cinema: A Threat or Healthy Competition

While we certainly appreciate and celebrate the rise in content and presentation of all kinds of narratives on the big screen, there still a concern arises about whether should Bollywood movies be shown in Pakistani cinemas.

As India lives through the era of four big films of Shahrukh Khan released in the same year, SRK fans in Pakistan rightfully feel deprived of these mega eventful surprises of ‘Pathaan’, ‘Jawaan’, ‘Tiger 3’, and ‘Dunki’. Right from the beginning of the year till the end, it has been a major part of debates about whether Indian films should be shown at Pakistani cinemas or not. Well, there are different opinions on this, but true movie buffs would certainly agree to erase the boundaries when it comes to art.

Indian films might be a threat to our local content in cinemas, but if it is considered to be a healthy competition, filmmakers and most importantly, the government might use it as a catalyst to perform well in terms of budgeting and storytelling.

International Honors for Pakistani Films in 2023

Lollywood’s big and small titles have been winning big and making us proud with good content in the international market. Our films have been presented to several film festivals which not only got applauded but also won numerous awards in different categories.

Zarrar Kahn’s ‘In Flames’ was presented at the prestigious event of the International Film Festival Mannheim-Heidelberg (IFFMH) where the film bagged the International Newcomer Award. While Sarmad Khoosat’s 2022 film ‘Kamli’ achieved a milestone at the Minsk International Film Festival where Saba Qamar secured the Best Actor Award, Khoosat earned the Best Director Award and the film received the Viewers’ Choice award at the renowned Listapad festival, the largest film festival in Belarus.  Along with these, Sarwat Gillani and Omair Rana’s ‘Noor’ and Mohammed Ahsan’s ‘Pehchaan’ are selected for the Cannes Film Festival 2023 for the categories of Best Health Film and Best Human Rights Film respectively.

Summing Up

There has been an appreciable effort and effort to bring out the best of content to the theatres this year which not only was visible to the masses, and critics but also in the international markets where quality content is applauded. With a limited number of resources, an overly critical and sometimes unfair censor board, and all the flaws and shortcomings, our uber-talented filmmakers are trying their best to keep the film business and Lollywood charm alive. This year was full of such efforts that indeed can not go unnoticed. With all the hope and goodwill we are now heading toward the new year anticipating films better than ever and discussions about our films more than ever.

5 On-Air Dramas Catering To The Younger Audience

Every year an abundance of dramas are released on Pakistani television with different narratives and plots. Some gain recognition from the critics for excellent storytelling while others win the rating game and few are able to do both. Despite this large influx of projects, we rarely see dramas catering to our younger audience. This trend has resulted in the young generation of our country turning to Netflix and other streaming platforms to fulfil their entertainment needs.

It is only now that we have started seeing a trend with the release of new dramas that have stories with which the young audience can resonate and we all get a break from saas-bahu drama or love-triangle tragedies. We have compiled a list of 5 currently airing dramas that the young generation can tune in on television for an entertaining watch.

Standup Girl

If you are a fan of the Amazon Prime Video series ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Pakistani Green Entertainment’s new project, Standup Girl’ might just be for you. We are not claiming that ‘Standup Girl’ is the desi version of the show, though it’s worth a watch. Instead of Mrs. Maisel who finds her passion for standup comedy after her husband leaves her, we have our very own Zara who faces an identity crisis following her mother’s death and the revelation that she has relatives from her maternal side, whom she has never met.

Written by Awais Ahmad and Adeel Afzal, under the script supervision of none other than Bee Gul and a directorial venture of Kashif Nisar, ‘Standup Girl’ is a romantic dramedy that marks many firsts. The drama follows Zara Noor Abbas Siddiqui’s character Zara who dreams of becoming a stand-up comedian and a charismatic rap singer, played by Danyal Zafar.

What spiked our curiosity to watch ‘Standup Girl’ was of course the novel storyline. The drama ventures into an entirely new territory which has not been explored in the context of Pakistani television dramas or films. Essentially the story is about two creative artists and the challenges they face in pursuing their passions. It talks about the real issues that an artist encounters, such as Danyal’s character going through a phase of creative block, thus making it a perfect watch for an aspiring artist or anyone who wants to unwind.

22 Qadam

The passion for cricket is what unites us as a nation. If you are a Pakistani, I refuse to believe that you would have never sat through at least one cricket match in your life. Through the lead character of Fari, we witness the challenges faced by women in pursuing their passion and the pressure they face from society, as well as, the internal obstacles they have to go through to achieve their goals. The drama aims to achieve a balance between showing the professional challenges encountered as well as what unfolds behind closed doors by talking about pivotal issues like domestic violence, mental health, suicide etc.

What’s more, is that as the audience you get to see the booming romance between Fari and Junaid and the cute moments that follow. If you are looking for something substantial to watch with some light-hearted scenes interweaved in between, ‘22 Qadam’ is just for you.

Baylagaam

In the age of social media, which heavily influences the life of Gen Z, various dramas on Netflix underscore the aftermaths of excess use of social media or have a plot that revolves around it. Pakistani drama ‘Baylagaam’ falls in the same category.

The drama follows the life of a young girl Ramsha, whose initial interest in social media transforms into an insatiable quest for fame, driving her to extreme lengths. Along the way, she encounters Afnan, the son of influential businessman Qasim Ali.

While Afnan sees Ramsha as a source of entertainment due to his affection for his cousin Aleezay, Ramsha misinterprets their bond as love. Disappointed in her pursuit of love, Ramsha redirects her focus toward achieving popularity. This relentless journey disrupts her family’s peace and distances her from loved ones.

As her fame grows, Ramsha discovers the hidden challenges fame brings, throwing her life into turmoil. This story, penned by Huma Hina Nafees and directed by Zahid Mehmood, stars Ali Abbas, Afnan Laiba Khan, Ramsha Haroon Shahid, Shani Tuba Anwar, Alizeh Shabbir Jan, and an exceptional cast.

Breaking News

In need to watch a suspense thriller that will keep you hooked, try giving the new drama around the block ‘Breaking News’ a try. Written by Aamir Raza and directed by Kashif Nisar, ‘Breaking News’ is a drama revolving around the inner workings of journalism and media houses.

It revolves around two emerging and passionate journalists who refuse to surrender to the corrupt system and aim to traverse through the world of journalism with honesty and integrity. Through the lens of Mishal Jamil and Hussain, we get to see the relentless pursuit of truth and ethics amidst the ruthless competition, shedding light on the stark contrast between sensationalized content aimed at garnering views and the fundamental principle of delivering factual news.

As the episodes progress, we get to see the integration of more characters in the drama, with the involvement of politicians and influential forces, turning it into a thriller powerplay.

Ishq Murshid

‘Ishq Murshid’ is the perfect watch if you are looking to watch a fictitious lighthearted romantic tale that will engulf you in its universe. The compelling light-hearted romantic drama follows the lives of Shahmeer Sikandar and Shibra Salman, portrayed by the talented Bilal Abbas Khan and Durefishan Saleem, respectively, as they embark on a heartwarming coming-of-age love story.

In the spotlight of this drama, we see Bilal Abbas playing the role of a rich guy Shahmeer Sikandar who has returned from abroad after completing his education. At a friend’s wedding, he falls for Shibra Salman, a middle-class girl who believes that a man chosen by her father will keep her happy and money is not the answer to all the problems. To win her heart, Shahmeer disguises as Fazal Baksh, a humble man from a lower-class background. The drama progresses as the romantic tale flourishes between the two characters, giving us heartwarming scenes that make you smile.
