Ho Mann Jahaan (Review): This coming of age musical makes for a decent watch despite its shortcomings

Movie Name: Ho Mann Jahaan

Release Date: January 1, 2016

Director: Asim Raza

Review by: Momin Ali Munshi

Bollywood released 109 films this last year. I’m not talking about Tamil, Telgu and other regional language releases but just the Hindi releases which make up Bollywood. This means that on average about 9 films released every month. Now if I were to ask you to name these films, how many names would you come up with?  Not many I assume. Furthermore, how many of these films would you say were eagerly awaited releases? The number would further decline. Now let’s come to our local film industry that is Lollywood. We had a total of 14 films this year which roughly translates into 1 film every month. Now I’m fairly sure that you can name almost all of these fourteen releases and furthermore most of these films, if not all, were eagerly anticipated releases.

What was the agenda behind this comparison you ask? Well the point I’m trying to make is that we only have a limited number of releases every year and we expect the best from each and every film. The buzz and excitement surrounding our local films is just crazy. What’s even more interesting is that this buzz is not only limited to the commercial releases but even the art/niche films have an unprecedented amount of hype surrounding them. That is to say we celebrate each and every film that is to release and have high expectations from it.
Moreover, the hype which is created through promotional activities is increasing exponentially with each film release.  Remember how we all went crazy when ‘Jalaibee’ started its promotional tours earlier this year. Then came ‘Wrong Number’ and ‘JPNA’ which took things a few notches higher and well now the ‘Ho Mann Jahaan’ hysteria is nothing like we have ever seen before. Be it the ‘Shakar Wandaan’ dubsmashes , the university tours, television appearances, concerts or the general craze, it’s all just surreal.

I’m sure you have an idea of where I’m getting too. What I’m trying to say is that we in Pakistan are celebrating every release to the extent that the expectations surrounding the film reach the sky and a masterpiece is expected from every film. Somewhere we forget that statistically speaking it’s not possible that every film will live up to the expectations and will come out as a blockbuster. There will be hits, there will be flops and then there will be the average films which I like to call fillers! These filler films are just the average films which aren’t great films but then aren’t bad films either. Their case is synonymous to that student in class who just does well enough to pass the exam with decent marks.

And Ho Mann Jahaan according to me is a filler film. It’s not bad, but it’s not spectacular either. It’s just an average film that has its shortcomings but makes for a decent watch and we Pakistanis need to accept that as our industry grows there will lots of such filler films that come our way. In between the blockbusters and the disastsers there will be films like ‘Ho Mann Jahaan’ and we need to just accept this fact and lower our expectations for every and any Pakistani film.

( I’ve used box office success and quality of film interchangeably as differentiating between them would further complicate the discussion)

Now lets talk about the film.

Story

The story revolves around the lives of three college students Arhan (Shehrayar), Nadir (Adeel) and Muneezeh (Mahira) who are all aspiring musicians studying in a Business Institute. College ends, real life kicks in and the film shows this journey from college to the big bad world and how different factors such as parental pressures, societal norms, etc. affect the lives and relationships of these three friends.

Now the story isn’t really groundbreaking and we have witnessed this subject countless times already but still there is something about the localized treatment that clicks with the average viewer. The characters are all very real and the situations very relatable.

But there are also some drawbacks when it comes to the story. I won’t get into the nitty gritties and give away spoilers but some portions seem superfluous and unneeded. There is no reason why so and so does so and so and there is a big question mark of why. That having said the main plot is satisfying and once the film ends, which is a long journey, you leave the cinema with a smile.

Direction

Asim Raza’s foray into films was under close scrutiny considering the fate of his contemporaries from the advertisement world and it would not be wrong to say that his transition is a fairly successful one albeit not completely smooth. Asim shows spark as a film director but not without some oversights. First and most important being the editing, which is something almost every Pakistani filmmaker needs to learn. The film moves at the pace of a snail and is dragged unnecessarily to the point that one feels disinterested and completely disinvolved. Had the editing been crisp the film would have been something else altogether.

‘Why does it look like the film is playing in zoom mode’ commented one of the guests at the premire after having seen the film and that is exactly my question for Asim. Why the unnecessary close up shots which add no value to the film.

Lastly is the same old issue of ‘oh this looked like a television drama’. Well this actually looked like a 22 episode serial being watched together in one sitting. There weren’t many cinematic shots and then there were some very absurd shots which I believe were added to make the film look more film-like. Had ‘Ho Mann Jahaan’ been a television show it would have set new benchmarks in the television world but for a film where you pay 500 rupees, well, its a different story.

But all this criticism should not take away from the fact that Asim Raza as a director has done fairly well considering that this was his directorial debut. He surely knows his craft, is a great story-teller and his attention to detail is just too good. He just needs to polish his skills a bit more and Im sure he will emerge as one of the successful directors in the future.

Acting

Shehryar Munawar as Arhan is without doubt the star of the film. He completely steals the show and emerges as a strong performer and that to in his very first film. The spunk and energy that he brings to the screen is great and for all the detractors who had doubts about his acting skills you are in for a surprise.

Adeel Hussain as Nadir is good. He looks and performs the part rather well but it’s only the emotional scenes where he comes off as a bit untrained. There is this one scene towards the end which looks like a complete joke. Other than that we have a tall, dark and handsome hunk who knows his stuff and could very well pose serious competition to the reigning superstars.

Mahira Khan does the same old bit she did in ‘Bin Roye’, ‘Humsafar’ and basically any project she has been a part of. Although she fits perfectly in the role of the the strong minded Muneezah but Mahira rehashing her earlier characters is very off putting. That having said she does improve in the later parts of the film and does manage to successfully bring to screen what Asim envisioned.

Sonya Jehan as the strong, independent Sabina is probably the highlight of the film. Although there is not much scope for her to perform but whatever little part she has she is just perfection personified.

Bushara Ansari, Nimra Bucha, Jamal Shah are there in supporting roles and all do justice to their roles.  It was surely pleasing to see so many veterans on the silver screen. However I strongly feel that Bushra Ansari as a stock character is not done.

Music

The music is one of the strengths of the film and that was evident from the very first day when the music came out. Be it Asrar’s ‘Shakar Wandaan’, Jimmy Khan’s ‘Baarish’ or Zoheb Hassan’s classic ‘Dosti,’ every song makes its mark felt and helps the film move forward. Pegged as a musical the music of this film is surely going to stay with the listeners for a long period of time. But while the songs will appeal to one section of the crowd, they may come across as boring and bland for the other section of crowd who is more into Bollywood and peppy dance numbers. Nonetheless the music is a major plus point.

GL Exclusive: The 2nd ARY Film Awards are all set to take place in Dubai this February

The biggest celebration of cinema is back!

Yes, the ARY Film Awards are all set for a spectacular round two where they will recognize the best of Pakistani Cinema from last year.

Our high placed sources reveal that the awards will be taking place this February in the city of Gold that is Dubai. Celebrities will be flown to Dubai where the biggest entertainment  extravaganza in the history of Pakistan will take place. What will make this even bigger is the fact that the PSL, which is going to be the biggest cricket event in the history of Pakistan, will be coinciding with the awards hence the buzz that will be generated will be unprecedented.

The only question on our mind is whether the awards will celebrate films released in 2015 or films from 2014 will also be included. We ask this because the first AFA ( which took place in 2014) celebrated 2013 in cinema but then the second AFA could not take place in 2015 courtesy the meager number of films released in 2014. Now we are waiting to see whether AFA 2016 will include the films from 2014 or not.

What actually happens only time will tell but if history is any indicator we can surely guarantee that AFA 2016 will be another blockbuster from the house of ARY.

Stay tumed to Galaxy Lollywood for all updates. Who knows we might just be flying to Dubai to cover the event for our readers 😉

The Top 5 High Grossing Films of 2015

2015 was a high-flying year for the local cinema as 14 Urdu feature films released this year. We did not only see a significant rise in the number of films releasing this year but these films also performed outstandingly on the box office and set new records and raised the bar to new height.

Half of this year releases earned more than 5 crore on the box office each, which is a huge achievement for an industry in its nascent years of revival and having cut-throat competition with the imported content. The more promising fact is that the sum of domestic collections of all releases reached the 100 crore mark this year, which is a clear indication of increasing demand of local cinematic content.

Here is the list of top 5 highest grossing movies of this year.

JPNA cover1- Jawani Phir Nai Ani

This mega-cast starer comedy adventure film was a damn sure blockbuster when we watched its first teaser back in March this year, but no one had guessed such a monumental box office success of the film. It broke the record of Waar within three weeks and became highest grossing film of Pakistan of all times by minting more than 40 crores on the box office. The film also broke all previous records of highest first day and first weekend collections when it released on Eid-al-Azha (25 September).

But, the film had to compete with two other mega releases, Mahira Khan and Humayun Saeed starer Bin Roye and Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The film competed well and became the second highest grossing film of the year by collecting around 15 crore on the box office. The spectacular public response of the film made it one of the longest running releases of the year as well.

Bin Roye cover3- Bin Roye

This Mahira Khan and Humayun Saeed starer romantic drama was released on Eid-ul-Fitr (18 July) and despite facing formidable competition from other two releases of Eid, Bajrangi Bhaijan and Wrong Number, it was successful in impressing the audience, especially the tear-jerkers loving female lot, and ran successfully for more than 50 days in the cinemas. It became the third highest grossing film of the year by earning the collections of around 11 crore on the box office. The film was also a huge overseas box office success.

The Top 5 Debuting Actors of 2015

2015 was the year of debuts, as we saw many new faces appearing both behind and in front of the camera.

Many young and talented male actors debuted at the film industry this year. We selected the top five among them who did not only impress the audience with their performances but, some of them, also made many skip some beats with their killer looks.

Our list of top five debuting actors of 2015 is a pool of immense talent and rising film stars who have many new horizons to reach and many more hearts to conquer written in their fate. We wish them getting good chances and opportunities to become the next superstars of Pakistani cinema.

Danish TaimoorDanish Taimoor

The foray of TV’s one of the most handsome and desirable hunks Danish Taimoor into the film industry was welcomed by many and a treat for the actor’s huge fanbase. Danish Taimoor appeared in two major releases of this year in lead roles, Jalaibee and Wrong Number, both of which stormed the box office and the later one became second highest grossing movie of the year. Such a successful debuting year has always been a dream of many actors.

Danish Taimoor has signed in by Sangeeta for her next film Tum Hi To Ho, scheduled to release in the later half of 2016.

Yasir HussainYasir Hussain

He came. He conquered.

Yasir Hussain, a multi-talented prodigy of theater and influenced by writers as great as Anwar Maqsood, outwitted everyone in road-trip comedy Karachi Say Lahore released this year. His coruscating dialogues, also written by him, and realistic stutter in the film gave a fresh breath to the comedy in Pakistani cinema.

It is his real talent that landed him to many big projects later, including Ho Mann Jahaan,  Fahad Mustafa’s first production Band Tu Ab Bajay Ga and an untitled spin-off of Karachi Se Lahore which majorly revolves around his character. 2016 seems bigger for the actor/writer.

Shaz KhanShaz Khan

He is an extremely handsome and a sublime actor. In his first film, Moor, Shaz Khan delivered more than what was expected from the first-timer. Shaz, who juggles the roles of actor, writer and producer, is a newbie for Pakistani cinema but he has prolific experience of independent cinema and theater in the US.

We are not sure what he is up to after Moor but we expect him to return to the silver screen in bigger and meatier roles. He has potentials to be the next sensation of the youth.

Adnan SarwarAdnan Sarwar

Adnan Sarwar taught us that your circumstances should not stop you to dream big and struggle to achieve them, by essaying the role of ex-Olympian and boxer Hussain Shah who hailed from impoverished Lyari, in his meagerly budgeted sports biopic Shah. Making Shah was a similar experience for Adnan, one full of hindrances and uncertainties, but he made it happen and received critical acclaim for his small but significant production as an actor and director.

He promised to make more films based on the lives of unsung and long forgotten heroes of Pakistan and we are waiting when he formally announces his next film.

Sikander RizviSikandar Rizvi

The chiseled features and the regal family background made Sikandar Rizvi a perfect entry in the Pakistani cinema. Sikandar, the grandson of late Madam Noor Jahan, was running his cafe in Karachi before he started modeling as fun and he was approached by Asad ul Haq for his (experimental) rom-com Dekh Magar Pyaar Say. Unfortunately, the fate of the film was fast decided but it will be remembered for giving another dapper man to the industry.

Sikandar is part of the ensemble cast of upcoming action film Yalghaar, in which he will be seen along with his real life bae Ayesha Omer.

Shaan’s directorial comeback “Arth 2” hits the floor, with small change in the lead cast

Shaan Shahid remained absent from the cinema for the whole year in 2015 but this state will not continue any longer in 2016 as Yalghaar is nearing its completion stage and the long awaited directorial comeback of Shaan Arth 2 has just hit the floor.

Arth 2 is the remake of Mahesh Bhutt’s hit film of 1982 Arth. Shaan, being writer and director of the remake, is giving it a contemporary Pakistani makeover, keeping the same characters as the original film and having a different plot.

As the BTS pics from the sets of Arth 2 emerged, we learned about a small change in the lead cast of the film which included Shaan Shahid, Humaima Malik, Humayun Saeed and Uzma Hassan originally. The only change we saw in the final cast of the film is Humayun Saeed replaced with Mohib Mirza.

The shooting of the film started on the occasion of 25th anniversary of Shaan Shahid in cinema earlier this month. Currently the first spell of the film is progressing in full swing in Lahore and the whole lead cast is taking part in it.

Bol girl Humaima Malik was last seen in Asad ul Haq’s rom-com Dekh Magar Pyaar Say. Arth 2 is one of the actor’s multiple film projects in the pipeline, as revealed by Humaima Malik recently.
