Women are Used as Props in Pakistan’s Film Industry: Sonya Hussyn

Films and Television are supposed to be incredible mediums that bring our society together rather than just covering commercial stories. Despite the overwhelming acceptance of commercialism in the current era, we are blessed to have certain artists in our industry, who feel no shame in using their privilege of being heard widely, in a meaningful way. One of such exceptionally talented stars, Sonya Hussyn recently gave an interview in which she talked about her career graph, choices of work, and the tragedy of using women as item girls on the big screen content.

Women are Used as Props in Films

Talking to Independent Urdu the Daadal actress was asked about why she doesn’t opt for glamorous roles as per her age and appearance, to which she responsibly replied that she prefers her roles to have substance and meaning to it. Keeping her films in consideration, Sonya has ever done roles that were substantial and of some purpose. Be it ‘Azaadi’ opposite Moammar Rana or her recent Eid film ‘Daadal’ where she portrays a serial killer from Karachi’s much talked about Lyari.

In my opinion, as an artist, when you don’t do roles or scripts that fulfil your soul, there’s no point in your work, profession or career. Glamorous roles can be on the side but when you essay a character like this, then I think an artist is owning up to their responsibility,” she exclaimed.

While Pakistani Film Industry is somewhat reviving and evolving, as we are creating more and more content of different sorts, it is however very important to see where things can be improved. Talking about the overall role of women in our films these days, it feels unpleasant to see lesser content being made on women, for women, and more importantly from women.

When asked why she doesn’t take up as much films as dramas, Sonya Hussyn responded; “Belonging to the industry, one of the main reasons for not doing enough films is because I want women to not just be used as a prop or an item girl. I want the heroine to have a well-sketched character. She should have a passion, a purpose, motivation and a goal in life like other characters. So as long as that’s not there, I don’t see a purpose. And besides, the drama industry is very big here so why not dramas?”

Sonya Hussyn’s Television Journey

The actress revealed that during the initial times of her career, she was warned for not doing difficult characters as they will destroy her graph as a celebrity, however she found it more important to convey what she had to through roles that were never taken seriously on Pakistani Television before.

It has always been exciting to know what Sonya’s upcoming show for TV is about. Provided that she has done dramas highlighting complex psychological and mental disorders like Nazo, Teesri Manzil, Ishq Zahe Naseeb, and Saraab. She also worked on several sensitive subjects including child abuse in Meri Guriya. Back in 2017, she played Pakeezah, a cybercrime victim and a sexual assault survivor in ARY Digital’s Aisi Hai Tanhai. Keeping up with the diversity, she has worked in ARY’s horror show Dareecha and played glamorous and gentle roles in Aangan and Mohabbat Tujhy Alvida.

Whether it’s films or dramas, an artist has the capability to create betterment, bring change, while providing entertainment, which we believe is the trickiest task yet the biggest strength that these mediums contain if used wisely.

How tragic is that we don’t have much female filmmakers, neither do we have films having women as central characters and not always a token of glamour or sensationalism. But artists like Sonya Hussyn can definitely bring a much-required change into the content being created for the big screens.

Actors are More Than Just Entertainers; Jamal Shah Says After Rejecting 35 Scripts Before Tere Ishq Ke Naam

Jamal Shah

In times where the younger lot in the film and drama industry seems to be driven by quantity over quality, veteran Pakistani actor Jamal Shah has emerged as a steadfast advocate for meaningful storytelling.

Bucking the trend of accepting multiple roles without much thought, Shah recently made headlines by turning down a staggering 35 scripts before finally agreeing to a project that resonated with his vision—’Tere Ishq Ke Naam.’

His bold decision reflects a refreshing perspective on the responsibilities of actors, asserting that they are not mere entertainers but powerful agents of change. As the former director of the esteemed Pakistan National Council of Arts, Shah brings a wealth of experience and credibility to the table, making his opinion all the more compelling.

Jamal Shah Continues His Legacy

Shah’s unwavering commitment to selecting scripts that carry a strong social message reflects a profound belief in the transformative power of cinema. His dedication to meaningful storytelling aligns with the age-old adage that art should not merely entertain but also enlighten and inspire.

In an era where entertainment often overshadows substance, Shah’s insistence on substance-driven roles marks a paradigm shift that demands attention and discussion within the industry.

Drawing from his extensive experience in the Pakistan National Council of Arts, Shah brings a unique perspective to the table. He believes that actors, as prominent figures in society, are responsible for portraying characters that contribute positively to the collective consciousness. By using their influence and reach to champion stories that address pertinent social issues, actors can play a pivotal role in shaping public opinion and promoting constructive dialogue.

Jamal Shah in Tere Ishq Ke Naam

Viewers are already singing praises of Jamal Shah’s character in Tere Ishq Ke Naam. The actor’s role as Rutba’s father is gaining love and admiration because of the way he handles situations related to her stubborn daughter and her reckless love decisions. As of now, the decision to reject 35 scripts and take up Tere Ishq Ke Naam seems to be making sense for Jamal Shah. As a reasonable father who believes in the power of education, Jamal Shah is educating our society in ways more than one.

Can Young Actors Really Reject 35 Scripts?

While esteemed actors like Jamal Shah have reached a stage in their careers where they don’t feel the need to prove themselves to audiences or the industry, the same cannot be said for their younger counterparts.

Emerging actors often find themselves caught in a precarious position, where the pressure to establish their presence and build a successful career can overshadow their ability to ponder and meticulously select roles.

Balancing artistic integrity with the practicalities of the industry becomes a formidable challenge, as the stakes are high in an environment where box office numbers and social media followers often measure success.

Moreover, the financial realities faced by young actors further compound their dilemma. Many emerging talents struggle to establish themselves economically as they face financial pressures and the need to sustain themselves and their families. This financial burden can limit their ability to decline roles that may not align with their artistic aspirations but offer financial security.

While seasoned actors like Jamal Shah can serve as mentors and role models for younger actors, it is equally essential for the industry as a whole to evolve and create opportunities that prioritize substance over superficial gains.

By nurturing an ecosystem that values quality over quantity, the film industry can empower young actors to make more thoughtful choices, explore roles that showcase their talent, and contribute to the societal dialogue.

Industry Unites Against Diesel-Induced Smog on Film Sets

Saba Qamar, Sarmad Khoosat, and Ayesha Omar

We understand that drama and film sets are made to be functional and utilize every resource and time to the best of their ability but what if the same starts posting health hazards for the people present on the location? While we’re making high quality content, it is high time we focus on utilizing the best equipment to create that content as well.

Recently actress Saba Qamar contracted a serious lung infection due to diesel inhalation on the sets of her upcoming project. The diesel was used to make the smog machine work to create haze for scenes on television.

What Happened to Saba Qamar?

The Baaghi actresses shared a picture of herself with a cannula inserted in her hand from the hospital, on her Instagram. Saba shared how she had been suffering a lung infection and had been hospitalized because of it. “It’s been a few days I’m suffering with lungs infection because of the diesel being used very commonly on the sets to create the smog effect,” wrote Saba on her Instagram Story. “I urge everyone to stop using diesel fuel because it really is injurious to health. No one knows better than I do, and it is the worst feeling ever,” shared the actress.

Sarmad Khoosat Agrees

Saba’s post attracted a lot of attention and her fellow actor and film Kamli director, Sarmad Khoosat also talked about safety hazards on production sets. Supporting Saba, Sarmad stated how he also couldn’t understand the obsession with creating haze on sets adding a rolling eye emoji. Adding further, the Manto actor also said, “If it’s so inevitable, then we need to find better solutions for this.” Sarmad ended the message with prayers for Saba, writing, “Get well soon.”

Ayesha Omar Narrates Similar Incident

Alongside Sarmad Khoosat, Ayesha Omar also shed light on the health concerns that smog machines working with diesels posed for actors on the sets. Sending love and prayers for Saba, Ayesha wrote, “I’m so sorry you’re going through this and so grateful you’ve spoken up about this. I’ve also developed lung infection twice on film and drama sets due to the same reason but was silenced when I let the producer/director know saying it can’t be helped and it’s necessary to create the mood/ tone of the project.

Ayesha too ended her message wishing Saba a speedy recovery and praying producers would start respecting the health and safety for their actors on set, “I hope we can collectively respect each other’s health and safety and find alternatives for toxic/dangerous chemicals/ situations. Wishing you a speedy recovery,” stated Ayesha.

Our Verdict

Saba Qamar and Ayesha Omar’s revelations bring health hazards for actors on the sets of their projects to the forefront. If precautionary measures are overlooked in favor of the mood/tone of the scenes, the results could be drastic and disastrous in the near future.

Prioritizing aesthetics over safety and health of those working on sets is a big concern for everyone. Saba Qamar’s post has opened eyes and we, urge producers and directors to re-evaluate their approach to health and safety hazards on their sets/locations to avoid mishaps or serious accidents in the future.

Ehraam e Junoon To Add New Twist to Rich Girl Meets Poor Boy Love Story

Ehraam e Junoon review

May is all about love, isn’t it?

Yet another love story has hit our TV-screens and fans are over the moon — because Imran Abbas and Neelam Muneer are collaborating for the first time on screen, in Geo TV’s intense love story — Ehraam e Junoon. The first episode of this much awaited show aired on Monday and left audiences with mixed feelings.

Treat for the audience: Imran & Neelam!

Seeing the dynamic duo together on screen has fans raving! Imran plays Shayan – a middle-class man who works as a pizza delivery boy and is the sole breadwinner of his family.

Although our charming hero falls a bit short of playing a convincing delivery boy based on his demeanour, he is fated to meet Shanzay, played by the gorgeous Neelam.

Shanzay, a stunning single lady from a well-established family who has turned down several proposals in order to find Mr. Perfect, has had a crush on Shayan since the first time she spotted him at an event.

One can’t forget Abbas’s opening shot here as he walks down the pathway looking like the dream man we all want. Our heroine is just as weak-kneed as us, and she on-purpose drops her keys just to get a few moments with him.

But our sakht launda Shayan – leaves her stunned and walks past her, indifferent to what has happened.

What does Shanzay do? She is smittens!

Ehraam e Junoon – A Story Where Different Worlds Collide

The first two episodes establish that both belong very different worlds and are battling their own demons.

Neelam ought to be applauded for portraying a stubborn and moody character in such a skillful manner. The sorrow in her eyes, the vengeance she seeks, and her admiration for Shayan are all spot on!

The background music also contributed to the feeling of love in the air, especially during the duo’s first meeting.

Twists & turns in Ehraam e Junoon

Writer Jahanzeb Qamar, who has written Kasa e Dil and Mera Rab Waris, has brought a love triangle on our screens this time, which may appear to be a typical love story, but has the potential to prove to be an emotional roller coaster ride.

Ehraam e Junoon is not just a rich girl meets poor boy. The story sees three different worlds connect as Sajeela – played by Nimra Khan – portrays a middle class girl.

To our collective distress, Shayan likes her despite her unkind demeanour.

The plot will take many twists and turns, but it has already hinted at what will happen next. We’re excited to see how the three will interact and grow during the show.

On the whole, the first two episodes were entertaining and well-executed, owing to director Syed Ramish Rizvi, who previously directed Zakham for Geo TV.

Despite the typical tale, the little nuances in the scenes are extremely well done; the bond Shayan enjoyed with his family captivated the viewers and are relatable for many. Burdened with commitments, he strives to be a great son and a brother.

Shayan’s sister Nadiya — played by Maira Khan – is like a breath of fresh air and a support system for him.

The first two episodes provide a relatively close look at a middle-class family and its troubles, while also demonstrating that being born into a wealthy family does not guarantee you everything, especially the love you seek.

Neelam Muneer as Shanzay is Innocent

Despite her dominating nature Shanzay’s aura has some innocence, especially when she interacts with servants, but unfortunately her makeup doesn’t compliment her acting, Neelam looks to mature and desperate for love.

On the upside, the second episode was filled with cute moments between Shanzay and Shayan, and delighted the audience once again.

Our highlight was seeing them fighting over “Pizza” – even though we had to ignore a small blunder as the delivery boy showed up with a single pizza box and in the next scene Shanzay was having a pizza party with two pizzas. Who knows, maybe she had one lying around?

Moreover, the second episode also FINALLY tells us why Shayan is so interested in Sajeela! (Drum roll) Apparently, they both got engaged somehow during their early childhood, as per the wishes of their parents, especially Sajeela’s father and Shayan’s Mamu!

Retrospectively, Shayan found out that Sajeela is no longer interested in him – but he doesn’t do anything about that. For the moment, Ehraam e Junoon flows at a good pace and appears to be a worthwhile watch for drama enthusiasts; nevertheless, we hope that it will not bore viewers by being too dragged.

Sanam Jung is Changing Narratives with Her Character in Pyari Mona

Aren’t we all aware of the false standards of body sizes set by our society. A major part of our society still considers obesity a flaw, and looks down upon obese people. In order to make a valuable effort in starting conversations regarding the subject, Hum TV and Sanam Jung are changing narratives with ‘Pyari Mona’.

Body shaming can be directed towards people of any age, gender, or body type, and can occur both in person and online. Body shaming can have serious negative effects on a person’s mental and physical health, leading to low self-esteem, body image issues, depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. And that is exactly the kind of messaging Pyari Mano is out to kill.

What Sanam Jung Feels About Her Character in Pyari Mona

Recently Sanam Jung took to her Insta to voice her opinion on a viral clip from the drama. Jung’s character Mona can be seen crying out loud in front of her mother over what she feels about her body image and weight.

“My only problem is that I’m fat. Isn’t it?” Mona, Jung’s character, asks her mother in the clip. After her mother replies in the affirmative, Mona cries out and says she doesn’t want to return to her husband and change herself to make him happy, when in fact she is happy the way she is.

Sanam Jung took to Insta and mentioned how a large number of people are judged on their physical features. She went on to say, “I’ve met so many girls living Mona’s life and trust me, it is not easy. Let’s put an end to bullying, body shaming and putting each other down. Live and let live”.

The Unique Narrative

‘Pyari Mona’ revolves around an overweight, “average-looking” girl portrayed by Sanam Jung in an impressive manner. The show does not just discuss body shaming, but also talks about the significance of young women having financial stability.

Written by Haseeb Ahmed and directed by Ali Hassan, the drama sets new perspectives by breaking several stereotypes of television dramas. It highlights refreshing male characters who are supportive, understanding, and have a progressive mindset to present to the masses, case -in-point Mona’s father who supports her in searching for a suitable job.

The Messaging

In a very gentle and non-preachy manner, ‘Pyari Mona’ gives away subtle messages about women empowerment, importance of career and financial independence for young girls, and the central theme which is body shaming.

Recent episodes from the serial focus on the emotional traumas an individual faces while dealing with the constant brutal and nonsensical remarks concerning their appearance and bodyweight.

It’s important to recognize that everyone has a unique body and that there is no “ideal” or “perfect” body type. Instead, we should strive to embrace and celebrate diversity in all forms, including body size and shape.

It’s also important to be mindful of the language we use when discussing bodies, and to avoid making negative comments or jokes that could contribute to body shaming and that’s exactly what we have learnt through ‘Pyari Mona’.

A Disappointing End to a Promising Mini-Series: Jurm Fails to Impact

Jurm Series End

After three interesting episodes that completely gripped the audience’s attention, the mini-series Jurm came to its conclusion on the fourth episode. And we must say, what an underwhelming ending to what was set to be a very promising and unforgettable thriller.

This review will contain SPOILERS. Reader’s discretion is advised.

A Promising Start Goes Bust

Jurm started on a very promising note. Our initial review of the drama based on its first two episodes was full of praises for its tight screenplay and direction.

Do we take our words back? Not necessarily. Because those episodes definitely warranted praise. It’s just the finale which falls completely flat on its face.

Jurm’s last episode feels so utterly disjointed from the story it was supposedly telling until episode three that it took us some time really digest it. The final reveal about what really happened on the night of the incident turned out to be so bafflingly uninteresting that we were left scratching our heads and hoping that maybe the final two minutes will be where the actual plot twist happens.

We were hoping against hope that the intense suspense thriller drama which gave us many plot twists in its first two episodes will pull that one final trick from up its sleeve and manage to wow us again. But, alas. None of that happens.

The Driver Did It!

So, it turns out the driver did indeed do it. There was no sinister darkness in either Daniyal or his family or Samia that had orchestrated this entire thing. Heck, there wasn’t even something super interesting like Aila herself being the mastermind behind her own kidnapping to take revenge from Daniyal for fooling her. Nope, it was just plain old boring driver who did it. Yawn.

Jurm with the way it was revealing and withholding information about the characters really had us believe that something extremely evil was afoot because of what appeared to be wasn’t what actually was. It started with the suspicious way Daniyal went from being annoyed by Aila’s interest in him to him being married to her within a year.

The cuts between the past and present had the audience questioning all character’s motives and actions. As a viewer we couldn’t help but make our theories about what could possibly be the reason this tragedy happened? Was it even a tragedy? Everything was so interesting when it was shrouded in mystery!

But nope, the driver did it. It was the driver all along.

Where’s the Fault?

Jurm’s crime is definitely building up the narrative to be something it clearly ended up not being. When the audience is given the vibes of a mystery that questions the viewer’s thinking on every step and challenges it through the narrative, the reveal being so absurdly simple feels like a betrayal.

Why promise something you can’t deliver? Why show the characters having intense passionate desires that maybe pushed them to commit crimes to fulfill those desires only to have the reveal being as pathetic as the driver doing it all for some extra money and failing? Why call it Jurm when no jurm happened? Call it Ghalti cuz that’s what it is.

The Only Decent Twist

The only decent twist Jurm managed to pull in its finale was how it turned out to be Shahana (Atiqa Odho) who ended up saving the day for her son. The character which was shown to be of a shallow woman with her crystals and meditations turned out to be the smartest of them all with the way she got the confession from criminal.

Wahaj Ali Excites (As Usual)

To the show’s credit it had some brilliant performances. Wahaj Ali, who didn’t have a lot to do in the first two episodes (cuz everything had to remain “mysterious”), got to fully shine in the last two episodes. And as expected from him, he gave a brilliant performance.

His chemistry with Tooba Siddiqui was the standout surprise. Daniyal and Samia’s secret romance, though brief, lent heart to this otherwise thrilling series. Something that was actually supposed to be done with Dur-e-Fishan Saleem but the way her character, despite being at the center of the entire thing, was treated as barely anything more than an afterthought is another jurm in itself.

Dur-e-Fishan is Forgettable

Dur-e-Fishan was entirely forgettable in the drama, just as Aila was forgotten. An offscreen death and no particular mention of how her death impacted the lives of the characters left behind?

C’mon! Justice would be if Aila came back from the dead and haunted all these people who entirely stopped caring for her the minute she was gone. We can call the sequel “Khauf – Aila Ka Badla”. Dur-e-Fishan herself was a far cry away from her usual self and maybe murder mysteries may not be her thing, as much as the saddened damsel in distress.

Questions Left Unanswered

Some major questions left unanswered, the answers we got turning out to be underwhelming, and a final reveal that was so entirely boring all add to make Jurm a disappointment.

The mini-series tricks you with the promise of being something mind blowing only to go down the usual route for Pakistani dramas that allow no place for complexities. The answer always has to be simple even if its at the risk of being underwhelming.

We guess the real jurm was committed by us; the jurm of expecting better. Unfortunately, as long as we continue to be attached to Pakistani dramas, we will continue to commit this jurm. And maybe one day we’ll finally manage to strike gold.
