Box Office Update: ‘Whistle’ is a colossal washout which was out of cinemas in seven days!

2017 is definitely turning out to be a bad year for Pakistani cinema. First, it was ‘Thora Jee Le’ which bombed at the box office, then it was ‘Balu Mahi’ and its disappointing total tally and now the third release of the year 2017 ‘Whistle’ has taken things to a completely different level as far as box office failures are considered.

The film which hit cinemas on February 17 could not even last seven days and was completely taken off cinemas February 24. Although this shouldn’t come across as a surprise, given that the first day first show of the film at DHA Cinema Lahore was canceled as there was no audience!

The film, nonetheless, managed to stay in cinemas for seven days and collect 5 lakhs. Yes, the film has a total box office collection of 5 lakhs. If this is not a colossal washout, we don’t know what is.

Here’s hoping that upcoming Pakistani films are met with a better fate.

TV Premiere: Helping you in deciding to watch ‘Ho Mann Jahaan’ tonight

Got a weekday holiday after really long, missed watching the parade on national TV in the morning and have no idea how to spend rest of your holiday, then we have a perfect plan for you. Pick bucket full of butter pop-corns and sit in front of your TV, as 2016’s hit ‘Ho Mann Jahaan’ is having worldwide TV premiere on ARY Digital at 9pm tonight.

This multi-starer coming-of-age musical stars ridiculously beautiful cast, including Mahira Khan, Adeel Hussain, Sheheryar Munawar and Sonya Jahan. It also features some very interesting special appearances by Fawad Khan, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Zoheb Hassan and last but not least Syra Yusaf (yes, that’s a surprise if you did not know!).

Written and directed by ace ad-maker Asim Raza, the film features a long list of pleasant songs by singers as amazing as Tina Sani, Atif Aslam, Asrar, Zeb Bangish, Mai Dhai and Jimmy Khan. If your are forgetting then, the soundtrack also includes popular dance number ‘Shakar Wandaan’, which became a huge phenomenon during film’s promotions and brought many amateurs to the dance floor.

If you missed watching the film in cinema then you can catch it on TV tonight. Perhaps, if you are not sure about watching it then we are here to help you in making your mind. We prepared a very quick guide on why or why not you should watch ‘Ho Mann Jahaan’.

Watch it if:

  • You love lighthearted family entertainer about friendships, relationships and everything in between.
  • You want to see some of the good performances of the last year, especially by Sheheryar Munawar and Sonya Jahan.
  • If you were a 80s kid and you want to watch your childhood crush Zohaib Hassan singing your childhood’s favorite song ‘Dosti’ with Mahira Khan and the gang. (Don’t miss it!)

Don’t watch it if:

  • You got little patience for a film stretching beyond 2 hours aimlessly.
  • You don’t like Mahira Khan redoing Khirad (Humsafar) and Saba (Bin Roye) in every project.
  • You don’t like seeing a crying man collapsing on a glass-top table and smashing it into gazillion shards. (Seriously!)

Exclusive: The teaser of highly anticipated ‘Punjab Nahi Jaungi’ is releasing this weekend!

It might sound too early to say, but BLOCKBUSTER is written all over Humayun Saeed-Mehwish Hayat starer ‘Punjab Nahi Jaungi’. Although the release of the film is still quite distant, but as per our sources privy to the information, the official teaser of the film is releasing this weekend.

Yes, you read it right. The wait is over and the teaser is coming your way really soon. So, all you fans of Humayun Saeed, Mehwish Hayat, Urwa Hocane and Ahmad Ali Butt, get ready to see the first look of the most anticipated movie of the year this weekend.

The film has been getting all due buzz since its announcement last year. But, so far, we have mostly been munching on the social media feed of Ahmad Ali Butt to get sneak peek of the film. The Butt-fies with his co-stars gave us little scoop of what was brewing on the sets of the film but these were not enough to satisfy our curiosity.

The first BTS pic of ‘Punjab Nahi Jaungi’ recently surfaced on the internet, upping the excitement to a new high. The vibrant pic featuring Humayun Saeed, wearing white kurta with crimson shawl, and Mehwish Hayat, blushing in pink and golden lehnga-choli, made us go into rhapsodies over them.

The pic promises that another blockbuster, much needed for the survival of film industry, is on its way. It also confirms the feedback we heard from some of insiders who got to see the teaser of the film and went gaga over it. According to them, the family entertainer looks highly promising and potential record-smasher. It is going to be another feather in the crown of Six Sigma Films and ARY Films, the makers of Pakistan’s highest grosser ‘Jawani Phir Nahi Aani’.

‘Punjab Nahi Jaungi’ is penned by Khalil ur Rehman Qamar and directed by Nadeem Baig. The film’s cast include Humayun Saeed, Mehwish Hayat, Ahmad Ali Butt, Urwa Hocane and Azfar Rehman.

THe film is slated to release on Eid-al-Azha.

Exclusive: Sahir Lodhi’s ‘Raasta’ gets postponed, wont be releasing tomorrow!

Yes, you read that right!

With less than 24 hours to go for the nationwide release of Sahir Lodhi’s ambitious venture, the release date for the film has been postponed. Sahir Lodhi’s debut film ‘Raasta’, which was all set to hit Pakistani cinemas tomorrow March 23, will now be releasing next week March 30th.

This news was first broken on Facebook by Mohsin Yaseen, GM Marketing and Operations, Cinepax Cinemas. We contacted him to get more details and he revealed that as per the distributors of the film there have been some technical issues with the film which will be fixed within a week and the film will release next Friday.

To know more we contacted the distributors too and found out that there was some issue with the censor and some other technical problem and hence the film will be releasing next week.

Here’s wishing the makers all the best and hoping to see the film in cinemas next week i.e. March 30th.

Box Office Update: ‘Balu Mahi’ ends its run and emerges as a FLOP!

The first big release of the year ‘Balu Mahi’ seemed to have everything working for it as the buzz surrounding the film was crazy and a box office success was definitely expected. But box office, as they say, is very unpredictable and unfortunately, the film wasn’t able to create much impact at the box office.

The film is currently in its sixth week and playing in cinemas ( it still has one show per day at Cinestar Township Lahore) but it’s safe to say that it won’t be adding much to the kitty and the box office run for the film has ended.

Now, interestingly, the makers have been completely silent when it comes to the box office and all this talk about the disappointing opening numbers and the further response is just the industry insiders talking. We tried to contact the makers for numbers but despite several attempts, we weren’t able to get a response.

So to track the box office of this film we will be using a different approach altogether.

‘Balu Mahi’ released on February 10 alongside the Akhsy Kumar starrer ‘ Jolly LLB 2’. Both the films had a good number of shows in week one as is normally with big films. Then later at the end of the first week,  cinema owners analyzed the performance of both the films and allotted shows for week 2 accordingly. Now while we do not have the data for all cinemas in Pakistan we will be using Nueplex Cinemas as a sample which has five screens and is one of the biggest and most successful cinemas in Pakistan

So here are the number of shows for both films at Nueplex Cinemas second weekend:

Balu Mahi = 11 shows
Jolly LLB 2=  26 shows

And a similar trend can be traced for week 2 and so on.  Now, it’s clear from these numbers that ‘Jolly LLB2’ performed better at the box office and whatever the number for ‘Jolly LLB 2’ the number for ‘Balu Mahi’ will be lower. ‘Jolly LLB 2’ has collected 3.5 crores at the box office ( official numbers courtesy Box Office Detail) and it would not be wrong to assume that ‘Balu Mahi’ has collected somewhere around 2.5- 3 crore. And for a film that has reportedly been made on a budget of 10 crores, the numbers are dissapoiting to say the least.

So yes, Balu Mahi flopped at the box-office guys!

Stay put Karachi-wallahs, Lollywood ain’t going anywhere!

Ever since the new age Pakistani film-makers are reviving the industry with their efforts, there has been this constant debate surrounding what our film industry should be called. Now historically, the industry has been called Lollywood, since Lahore has been the major film center in Pakistan and most Pakistani Productions have come out of Lahore. But since now almost all films are coming out of Karachi, the Karachi-wallahs feel that this term needs to be updated.

Reportedly, the term Lollywood was coined by a Karachi-based columnist Saleem Nasir back in the 80’s when Lahore was the only place where films were being made and hence the name Lollywood ( L standing for Lahore). Just to give some historical perspective,  before independence the two major film centers of the sub-continent were Bombay and Lahore, but after the creation of Pakistan in 1947, with Bombay being a part of India we only had Lahore churning out films.

Cut to today, I’m sure you already know our industry saw a decline and then almost collapsed in the 2000’s and its only due to the new breed of film-makers that we seem to be heading in the right direction and the revival of the Industry is finally happening with more and more films releasing every year. However, since most of the films are coming out of Karachi, the Karachi-wallahs feel that the Lollywood name should be replaced by Kollywood, Kariwood, or basically anything but Lollywood.

We won’t get into this argument, for hey we are called Galaxy Lollywood, so you know what our take on this nonsensical debate is. We believe in celebrating our history and owning it! But since the Karachi-wallahs feel that they gave a few hits in the last few years, they are suddenly the authority on films and the name should be changed let me clear something. Karachi may be making some great films, but Lollywood is what started this revival ( Umm Khuda Kay Liyay, Bol, Waar), and from what it seems like we are going to take it to the next level now. Confused?

Well, three of the biggest stars of today, Shaan Shahid, Fawad Khan and Ali Zafar are all working on mega projects in Lahore and from the looks of it, things are big!

First, it is Shaan Shahid’s ‘Arth 2’ which has us super excited for we have been hearing great things about the film and people who have seen the rushes claim that this is going to be epic. The film is beautifully shot and why not, for it does have Shaan Shahid on the director’s seat. Moreover, Shaan is now working on his next ‘Zarrar’ and it is currently being shot in Lahore.

Next up is Bilal Lashari’s magnum opus ‘Maula Jutt reboot’ which features the biggest names from the industry and is currently being shot in Lahore. And if there is anything we have learnt from Bilal’s debut film Waar, we know he knows how to make a film. Furthermore, from what we have seen of the sets and have been hearing, this is another blockbuster in the making.

While we were excited about the earlier two Lollywood productions, Ali Zafar announced ‘Teefa In Trouble’ where he will be romancing Maya Ali. The film is currently being shot in Lahore under Ahsan Rahim’s direction and we expect nothing but the best from this duo. Also given its Ali’s debut Pakistani film, we are sure he will be extra careful himself and give us something worth cherishing.

Add to that prolific Lahore based director Shoaib Mansoor, who gacve us critically acclaimed hits ‘Khuda Kay Liye’ and ‘Bol’, with his new film ‘Verna’ releasing this Eid featuring the new hot favorite Mahira Khan and you’ll know why we are excited about this Lollywood comeback.

So listen up Karachi-wallahs, Lahore aka Lollywood is coming back with a bang and is definitely here to stay!

Nominations for the 16th Annual Lux Style Awards are out!

It just feels like yesterday when Ali Zafar gave one of the most memorable opening performances ever for an award show, when Sohai Ali Abro danced like there’s no tomorrow and when Mahira won quite a few awards. Yes, that was last year at the 15th annual Lux Style Awards and now, exactly a year later, the awards are back with a bang and just announced the nominations for their 16th edition.

Nominees for LSA 2017 were announced in 28 categories in  Film, Fashion, Music and TV. Talking about the film section we feel that the nominations are pretty fair and almost every nominee deserved the nomination. But we do feel that there have been some major snubs:

  1. No Hareem Farooq in Best Actress! That’s blasphemy we say.
  2. Hameed Sheikh for Abdullah and Adeel Hussain for Dobara Phir Say should have been there in Best Actor.
  3. Nasir Khan definitely deserves a Best Director Nomination!
  4. No Rahat, No Sukhwinder? The male singer category is a mess.

Here check out the complete list and decide for yourself:

Did You Know: Syed Noor has eight films in the pipeline!

Syed Noor announce’s a new film at the drop of a hat. Whether that film releases or goes to the sets or even gets into pre-production, well that’s another story. Here, I list down eight films that Noor sahab has announced in the last few years and update you as to what is happening with those films .

  1. ‘Chein Aey Na’
    chein aye na

The most recently announced film by Syed Noor is ‘Chein Aey Na’ which stars Shehroze Sabzwari, Sehrish Khan, Adil Murad and others. The film is currently being shot in Karachi with a probable release date of late 2017/early 2018. Of all films that will be listed, this one seems to have the most chances of making it to the cinemas given the involvement of Syed Noor and how the film features a cast that is not generally associated with the Syed Noor brand.

2. ‘Aina 2’

shabnam
Lollywood veteran Shabnam was visiting Pakistan ( she now resides in Bangladesh) and Syed Noor saw this as an opportunity to announce a new film. As you move down the list you will realize that this is something he likes to do: seize the moment and announce a film with anyone who’s in the news. So reportedly the film will be a sequel to the 1977 film Aina and will feature the original pair Nadeem and Shabnam and will show what happened after the events of the first film. No dates have been announced for the film as of yet.

3. Bhai Wanted
bhai-wanted

The ambitious film by Syed Noor has been in the making for quite some time now. Initially, it was Shaan Shahid who was to play the lead role in this film but later on Moammar  Rana replaced him. The leading lady is, no points for guessing, Saima. A large chunk of the film has been shot and it is up to Syed Noor to complete it and release it!

4. Price Of Honor

price of honor

Syed Noor shot this film on 35mm about six years ago and is hoping to convert it into a digital print so the film can play in cinemas. The film stars Naveed Raza, Asim Mehmood and a few other actors who Syed Noor handpicked from the talent competition he judged. Last we checked Syed Noor was hopeful of releasing the film.

5.  Untitled film with Aamir Liaquat

aamir saima
Yes, this happened! Although we have no idea what’s happening with the film but Syed Noor did announce a film where he had apparently cast Aamir Liaquat opposite Saima. The film, he claimed, was a different kind of a love story and  Aamir was the ideal choice for the lead actor. After that what happened, well nobody really knows.

6. Amjad Sabri’s biopic

amjad sabri

When Amjad Sabri passed away, Syed Noor decided he wanted to make a biopic on the qawal. According to Syed Noor, it was Amjad Sabri’s request that Syed Noor makes a film on his life. Now whether this film is getting made, we don’t know.

7. O America 8.First Love

Back in 2014, Syed Noor announced that he would be making four films ( two being ‘Price of Honor’ and ‘Bhai Log’). He mentioned that he will be shooting these films in Canada and America and that’s all we know. What happened to these films, are they in the making, well only Syed Noor can answer that.

Moreover, I’m sure there are quite a few films he has announced which I’m missing because keeping track of his announcements is quite a task in itself. We would like to wish the director best of luck and hope that all of his announced films release soon.

Urwa Hocane just signed Na Maloom Afraad 2!

This is definitely an exciting time for the pretty actress for in addition to the three films she is already a part of ( Punjab Nahin Jaongi, Rangreza, and Jhol) the actress has just signed another biggie!

Yes, Urwa Hocane just signed ‘Na Maloom Afraad 2’ opposite Fahad Mustafa and it seems  that the entire team is all set to recreate the magic of the original film. While not much is known about the film we do know that the film will be shot in South Africa and that all cast members from the original film will be a part of the seuqel.

We talked to the actress and she mentioned how she was bleessed to be a part of all the films and she is really looking forward to working on the films.

We at Galaxy Lollywood wish her all the best.
