Here’s everything that went down at Chhalawa’s premiere last night, in Karachi

Wajahat Rauf’s upcoming film Chhalawa premiered last night in Karachi. A humungous number of celebrities including Sajal Aly, Urwa Hocane, Hania Aamir among others showed up at the star-studded premiere which was held at Karachi’s Nueplex Cinema. Here’s who all showed up, wearing what, and everything that went down:

Starting with the Aly sisters, Saboor and Sajal were dressed down in casual jeans and shirts, paired with some super chic heels.

The star couple Urwa and Farhan also graced the red carpet in casual wear (Farhan looked like he had come from a shoot, tired af).

Zara and Asad’s friends Asim, Hania and Yasir also came to support them. Asim wore a flowery shirt (Thailand bought, we are guessing) while Hania’s black kurta shalwar with her fiery red hot hair made her look 10/10.

Moreover, everyone’s favorite Imran Ashraf also came in his signature look; jeans, a kurta and a scarf around his neck. Full on Bhola vibes!

Wrong No. 2 fam; Yasir Nawaz, Nida Yasir, and Sana Fakhar also came out to support their fellow industry stars. Yasir was seen in casual wear whereas Sana wore a navy blue jumpsuit with neon earrings and braided hair. We are totally digging her super spunky look.

Nida, on the other hand, was seen in a peachy ensemble with a gorgeous cape over her attire.

The cast and crew of Chhalawa; Zara Noor, Asad Siddiqui, Azfar Rehman, Mehwish Hayat, Wajahat Rauf, Aashir Rauf, Shazia Wajahat, Adnan Shah and Mahmood Aslam all graced the red carpet, too.

Zara wore a sequin, black gown with puffy sleeves. Her look gave some Maleficent vibes but not in a good way tbh. We didn’t particularly like her hairstyle either.

Mehwish Hayat, on the other hand, wore a shadiesque Anarkali peachy dress which, truth be told, should stay at shadi functions.

Azfar, Asad, Wajahat, Adnan and Aashir came all suited booted wheres Mahmood Aslam wore a green kurta. Shazia came adorned in a black and gold saree which looked quite regal.

Parey Hut Love stars Maya Ali, Azaan Sami, and Shahbaz Shigri also came out to support Chhalawa. They all looked super casual yet super chic and well, we approve.

Bushra Ansari also came out to support her niece and son in law’s first movie together. She wore a bright outfit, combined with a pearl necklace and was all smiles for her family.

Hira and Mani showed up as well. Hira wore an all black eastern outfit whereas Mani chose to wear a plain black shirt with khaki pants.

Last but not least, The Mirs also showed up (once again, in super casual yet chic outfits) and we definitely loved seeing all of them together.

Horror flick Kataksha’s trailer promises a psychological thriller with new faces

It is raining trailers, hallelujah!

Yes! Just a few days ago, we were enthralled by the trailer of Saqib Malik’s Baaji and now a film with an entirely different genre, albeit of a smaller scale, has dished out its trailer. The film is called Kataksha which is a horror flick, at the backdrop of South Asia’s famous Shri Katas Raj Temples located in Chakwal, Pakistan.

A glimpse into Kataksha‘s trailer

Being an independent Pakistani film, you cannot expect much from the production values of it, as is evident from its trailer. However, what’s interesting and encouraging is the tendency of new and independent filmmakers to not hesitate from trying their hands on the less explored genres in Pakistan. Cases in point: Laal Kabootar, Gumm, Durj, etc. It is essentially these filmmakers who can later transform into bigger production houses and camps. A very good example is IRK-Hareem-Azfar Jafri camp whose first independent film Siyaah was rather small on production values yet rich and strong on the content level. A few years down the lane, we are now all witness to its exponential growth.

Coming to Kataksha‘s trailer, it follows a group of friends who travel to Katas Raj Temples with a mysterious looking driver played by Saleem Mairaj (who is the only well-known face in the film). While on the trip, they seem to face some supernatural entities along with their own conflicts and emotional turmoils.

Of interesting backdrop choice, unusual cast, and more

The two-minute long trailer doesn’t reveal much of the plot except for the basic template narrated above. Although the horror moments in the trailer aren’t spine-chilling enough, the background music and the dialogue exchanges amongst the lead cast are surely impressive at places. As expected, it’s Saleem Mairaj who shines all across the trailer but that doesn’t mean the younger lot isn’t promising enough, as far as their acting prowesses are concerned.

Another interesting aspect is the decision of filmmakers to use the historic Katas Raj Temples as the backdrop for a horror film. Earlier, Katas Temples have been used in rom-coms and music videos for their picturesque value and not as an integral part of a storyline. We do hope that while developing the film and its story, the sanctity of the temples was been kept in mind as the above-mentioned temples are the second holiest religious sights for the Hindu community and hurting their sentiments would be the last thing any sane Pakistani would want.

If the storyline and other content related departments are strong, Kataksha may just prove to be another Siayah for the Pakistani cinema. We will have to wait to see that until the film releases, of course.

Kataksha is written and directed by Abu Alaiha and it stars the acclaimed actor Saleem Mairaj alongside newcomers like Kiran Tabeer, Nimra Shahid, Kasim Khan, and Mubeen Gabol. The film hits the screens on June 21. Mark your calendars if you’re are a fan of desi horror flicks.

Exclusive: “I will be back soon,” Kubra Khan talks about deactivating her Instagram account

Kubra Khan, the Pakistani actress and model, has been in news for quite some time now. From her recent telefilm Laal with Gohar Rasheed and Bilal Abbas to her doing a special dance number in the upcoming film Superstar, Kubra has been on our newsfeeds, constantly (and we aren’t complaining). Cherry on top, she will also be seen in Sana Shahnawaz’s new production Alif alongside Hamza Ali Abbasi and Sajal Aly.

Recently, a number of people noticed that Kubra’s Instagram was gone and hence, a lot was said, heard and speculated. A number of her fans also messaged us to inquire about why Kubra’s account was no longer active.

We thought that it would be best to reach out to the star herself and hear what she has to say about her sudden disappearance from social media. Truth be told, “sorry, this page isn’t available right now” had us worried, through and through.

We reached out to Kubra to ask about her Instagram deactivation. “I am just taking some time out for myself. Otherwise, I get inclined to check my Instagram all the time so yes, I deactivated it so I can take a break,” told the actress.

When asked about if and when she will be coming back, Kubra had the following to say, “I will be back very soon; before Eid. Until then, I am on a social media break.” Amidst all the bedlam surrounding the industry and our actors, we sometimes tend to forget that they are people too who need to take breaks to rejuvenate themselves.

Here’s how ‘Baaji’ is a representation of some of the major eras of Lollywood

“Recurrence of themes” is a phenomenon that’s common to artists across the world regardless of their field. Whether it’s painters like Vincent Van Gogh or Pablo Picasso who stuck to surrealism and cubism in most of their works, an architectural genius like Antonio Gaudi who played with flashy colors and geometrical shapes or choreographers like Farah Khan and Wahab Shah whose choreography is mostly the translation of a song’s lyrics into dance steps. It’s this tendency to repeat themes that makes an artist’s work identifiable.

Saqib Malik’s love for cinema and Lollywood

While watching Saqib Malik’s upcoming film Baaji‘s trailer, the same comes to mind when the whole process of the making of Baaji is seen closely. In Saqib’s case, it’s the love of classic cinema in general & that of Lollywood in particular.

With videos like “Khamaj”, Ali Zafar’s “Dekha Jo” and Ali Azmat’s “Na re Na”, despite with contrasting subjects & singers, the ‘love of cinema’ element recurs time and again. The same can be seen with Saqib’s cinematic début Baaji. From the film’s subject to its settings, and from music to the artists he has hired for Baaji, “Lollywood” could be felt and seen all over the film now that the long-awaited trailer is released.

In a way, the director seems to pay homage to the golden era of Lollywood, its consequent fall and its current re-emergence. Even the leading ladies, one a fading star and the other, a rising one represent two Lollywoods where one crumbling industry’s fate was followed by the rise of a new cinema.

The cast:

It’s not just the themes, the cast itself strikes a balance too. Comprising an intriguing star cast, including the likes of Meera and Amna Ilyas in titular roles, alongside Osman Khalid Butt, Mohsin Abbas Haider, Ali Kazmi, Nisho and Nayyar Ejaz, Baaji covers major eras of Lollywood.

Where Amna Ilyas is the face of new age cinema (Zinda Bhag, MVLU, DMPS, Good morning Karachi, etc.). Meera represents the 90s (Khilona, Kaanta, Khoye Hu Tum Kahan, Inteha), while Nishu’s presence represents the golden era of the 60s and 70s (Nishu remained a prominent face of the 70s and starred in films like Rangeela, Aaj Aur Kal, Nadaan, etc).

The famous song Sub Tu Sohniye was picturized on her in one of her films. She’s also the mother of the 90s leading lady Sahiba and mother in law of Rambo, who recently lent his voice to the blockbuster hit Donkey King as Mangu. Also, the very senior musician from Lollywood Taafu Sahab has composed two special 90s styled songs that will serve as a treat for cine-goers according to the director.

Music:

Promising to deliver high voltage glamour and intense drama in the form of music numbers, the film features two chartbuster songs from the golden era of Lollywood.

The first one is “Ye aaj mujhko kia hua” from the film Naukar – starring Babra, Muhammad Ali and Zeba, sung by Naheed Akhtar and picturized on Babra Shareef – while the other “Don’t be silly” is from S Suleman’s 1972 platinum Jubilee hit Sabaq that featured Zeba, Muhammad Ali, Husna, etc. The song was sung by Roona Laila originally and was picturized on Husna, a leading dancer of that era. The same film featured Syed Noor as an assistant director while today’s well-known face Noor Bukhari’s parents as junior artists; another reason to assert that Baaji is trying to connect multiple dots of Pakistani cinema.

The setting of the film:

From the trailer, it’s evident that Baaji is mainly set in Lahore – an old and long-standing seat of Pakistani cinema for decades. It explores the old city architecture, its rather notorious theatre scene and, of course, the dwindling cinema culture in a rather dark and melancholic way.

That’s not it, the makers of Baaji also followed a rather long forgotten template, where the large foto-sets of the films featuring its artists would adorn cinemas or their launch or promotional events.

The trailer launch of Baaji dearly followed the Lollywood style, making sure the attending audience is given a taste of the forgotten Lollywood.

A final word

According to Saqib Malik’s own claim, Baaji will hopefully bridge the divide between what is known as new-age Pakistani cinema and our classical school of films.

It is yet to be seen how all of this unfolds when the film releases on the 28th of June. However, it’s not difficult to ascertain and feel that Baaji proudly owns the roots of original Lollywood which are mostly looked down upon by the new age artists, technicians and viewers equally.

Baaji may even invoke, young film viewers’ s interests in Pakistan’s long forgotten classic cinema. Just a little example, the video of the original song “Don’t be silly” has seen a multifold increase in its views and comments on YouTube just in two days, after the trailer launch of Baaji.

Maybe the process has already started.

Nine witnesses come forward to refute Meesha’s harassment allegations against Ali Zafar

Many events have unfolded involving the Meesha Shafi-Ali Zafar controversy since Meesha first broke the ice in April last year. Meesha Shafi, in a tweet on 19th April 2018, accused Ali Zafar of sexual harassment.

Since then, this controversy has resulted in a number of lawsuits from both parties, a boycott of Ali’s film Teefa In Trouble and a boycott of the 2019 Lux Style Awards by several members of the community as well as the industry. 

Just last week we saw a landmark decision made by the LHC on sexual harassment laws. More on that here. 

Just the day before yesterday, witnesses from the jamming session (which according to Meesha is where she was harassed) appeared in court to give their testimonies.

Here’s what went down

So on the 29th and 30th of May, a total of nine eyewitnesses recorded their testimonies on oath in the court starring Meesha Shafi’s allegation against Ali Zafar as false and frivolous.

The nine musicians included two women in their cross-examinations by the lawyers of Ms. Shafi. Both Kanza Munir and Aqsa Ali said they were shocked to hear what Miss Shafi had to say and found it their moral obligation as women to speak the truth.

The nine eyewitnesses included Asad Ahmed (Guitarist), Muhammad Ali Zafar (Bass Player), Qaiser Zain ul Abedin (Drummer), Joshua Keyth Benjamin (Keyboardist), Kashif Chamman (Percussionist), Muhammad Taqi (Saxophone player), Baqir Abbass (Flute player), Kanza Munir (Female Backing Vocals) and Aqsa Ali (Female Backing Vocals).

Qaiser Zain ul Abedin (Drummer) said he was behind the singers and watching them all the time during the jamming session and he could’ve never missed catching anything if anything even close to what Miss Shafi said had happened.

Where does this go from here?

Even with all the major developments, this still seems like a developing case. With nine eyewitnesses already having given their testimonies, more eyewitnesses have been summoned to appear in court. The next hearing for said eyewitnesses will be held on 11th of June.

Our TV industry is finally taking up the issue of sexual harassment and Inaam’s teaser is the proof

Imran Abbas does not need any introduction. He is a Pakistani singer, actor, and model who also won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. He even made it to the list of  “Sexiest Asian Men” several times. He made his debut in 2003 and since then, he hasn’t slowed down. Some of his famous TV dramas are Khuda Aur Muhabbat, Dil-e-Muztar, etc. and many more. The actor is usually seen portraying positive heroic roles.

This time, however, Imran Abbas will be seen in a negative character, more villainous than the mild one he played in Koi Chaand Rakh. He essays the role of a rich immoral man in the upcoming drama Inaam who is keen on exploiting his position and authority. It seems like Imran is all geared up to step out of his comfort zone and challenge himself. He is paired up with Sana Javed in this play.

Sana Javed is also one of the finest actresses in the industry. Her previous play, Khaani was a major success and is even viewed in Saudi Arabia, India, and various other countries. The talented actress will be seen playing the role of a damsel who, despite being strong and defiant, ends up crying in distress.

Inaam takes up the issue of sexual harassment

Inaam‘s teasers were released recently and they have set the viewers on edge. In the first teaser, Imran is seen harassing his employee by often calling her to his office or “accidentally” touching her. He also sings “Afreen Afreen” in a slow, sinister tone that brings out the magnanimity of his wicked nature.

The second teaser shows how the poor girl is labeled as an outcast and is asked to leave the neighborhood lest she “contaminate” the whole pond. Her father slaps her in front of everyone and is not willing to listen to her side of the story – a typical reaction of most of the izzat-daar khaandans.

The two look beautiful on screen, but the nature of their characters is what makes the whole chemistry more anticipating. The drama aims to highlight a very prevalent and pressing issue of sexual harassment faced by various women who set out to earn on their own, especially in workplaces.

The drama is penned down by the very renowned Do Bol writer, Sarwat Nazeer. It is directed by Anjum Shehzad and produced by the 7th Sky Entertainment, the very combo that gave us the hit serial, Khaani that took the internet by storm. Let’s wait and see what they have in store for us, time time. 

Baaji’s trailer is Lollywood’s multiple faces wrapped in a brilliantly haunting package

Saqib Malik’s long journey as a director is finally about to see its pinnacle in the form of his long-awaited big screen offering; Baaji. Starting with Ajnabi Sheher Mein, the director has had to witness multiple setbacks and shelving of many projects during his career. However, it looks like his dream is about to come true on the 28th of June with the release of Meera-Amna Ilyas starrer Baaji.

The trailer for this Saqib Malik’s big screen debut is finally out and after watching it, we can firmly say that the wait was truly worth it. There is gloss, grandeur, drama, confrontations, sabotage, songs and lots of dance.

A glimpse into Baaji‘s trailer

The two and a half minutes long trailer although quenches your thirst (created by the earlier released, tightly cut teaser) to want more, it gives away a lot of the story and plot that we, as an audience, probably didn’t even ask for. The rest of it, however, is a true delight to watch. 

It opens with a sneak peek into the lives of two ladies with extremely contrasting backgrounds but similar aspirations and dreams. One a yesteryear star with a crumbling career and romantic life, the other a younger middle-class girl with glittering dreams and blooming romantic life. They cross paths in a salon and develop a camaraderie which later vanishes, augmented by the evil schemes of an ex-boyfriend and some scheming coworkers who group together to teach the already distressed star a lesson. We don’t know how things unfold from there on. Guess we’ll have to wait for the film to come out to find out. 

Moving on, the trailer gives some Madhur Bhandarkar’s Kareena Kapoor starrer Heroine vibes but as per Saqib himself, his film, unlike Heroine is about two colliding eras of Lollywood and not just about a single “fading star” (we hope that’s true). Apart from that, we don’t see any noticeable shortcomings in the trailer, even if we tried and that honestly, makes us a little too happy. 

Of Meera’s comeback and brilliant lead performances

The positives outweigh the negatives conspicuously in the trailer and with the comedy-family-weddings bandwagon that the whole film industry seems to have hopped on, Baaji being a dark thriller proves to be a breath of fresh air, at least that from the trailer.

While Meera and Amna Ilyas occupy most of the trailer’s canvass and give awestruck performances, the supporting cast doesn’t lag behind either. Starting with the leading lady, Meera, Baaji may prove to be the best work of this 90s star. Her expressions, dialogue delivery, and presence in every frame are simply matchless. The 90s cinema buffs may (almost) have a hard time finding any better work of Meera from her 90s portfolio.

Amna Ilyas’s character is another strong feature of the trailer which shows a dramatic growth as the trailer progresses; from a dreamer to an achiever, she seems to fit the role like a glove.

Of perfect villains and daunting characters

But it’s not just the leading ladies who shine. Nayyar Ijaz, Nishu Begum & Ali Kazmi attract your attention in whatever scene they appear. They aren’t outrightly loathsome yet are scheming enough to be the effective villains. Particularly Nayyar Ijaz’s character which appears to have some homosexual tendencies would be a supporting role to look out for. In one of the scenes, he suggestively looks at Mohsin Abbas’s character while in yet other, his vanity mirror is adorned with semi-nude men, depicting his sexual tendencies in a subtle yet daunting way, for a film made in Pakistan.

Although Mohsin Abbas and Osman Khalid are given relatively little screen time for it’s just a trailer, after all, it still hints massively at the journeys their characters seem to go through.

Of foot-tapping music, impressive choreography and more

As for the music, not much exposure is given to it, albeit the line-up still remains interesting. There is a jazz track by the talented Zeb Bangash that stands out amongst all. The club sequence has foot-tapping beats but it remains difficult to infer whether the song would be a hit or a miss. Undoubtedly, the songs are choreographed in immaculate ways. Particularly the ballroom jazz number and club song are worth mentioning. When you have names like Wahab Shah and Nigah Hussain onboard, the choreography department is sure to be impressive.

The cinematography by Salman Razzaq needs no words of praise as the super talented man has proved himself on countless occasions. The set designs and artwork of the film add depth to the canvass of the film’s trailer.

The gloss and grandeur, combined with the gritty feel of the trailer, are as fresh as they could get. It’s the content that would give an edge to Baaji especially when the Eid releases are loaded with too much saccharine comedy. The trailer aptly hints at how Baaji could prove to be a game changer for its lead cast and the director and, who knows, for the industry too.

We are yet to see how the actual movie will turn out but for now, Baaji has turned all the necks to itself, outshining its other contemporary cinematic offerings.

The Mah-e-Mir star came into the limelight, earlier this year when she tied the knot with Babar Bhatti, the grandson of Major Aziz Bhatti. This time, however, she has become a public interest for a starkly different reason.

Iman Ali opens up about her struggle with Multiple Sclerosis

The model earlier today posted on her Instagram where she opened up about suffering from Multiple Sclerosis on World Multiple Sclerosis Day. She further revealed how it is a part of her life now and her lifestyle has completely changed. The actress also shared a blurred selfie, also known as “blurfie” to reciprocate the blurred vision that accompanies the disease.

For those of you who don’t know, MS is a disease in which the immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers and causes communication problems between your brain and the rest of your body. If left untreated, the disease can be deadly.

Signs and Symptoms: The symptoms of this disease vary from person to person, depending on the location of affected nerve fibers. The common symptoms are dizziness, electric shock sensations with certain neck movements. Partial or complete loss of vision, usually in one eye at a time.

It was back in 2009 when the model disclosed about her disease. Since then, Iman Ali has sought various medical help to deal with this.

Celebrities take part in “Let’s Beat MS”

Some celebrities such as Minal Khan, Aiman Khan, Azekah Daniel, etc. are also taking part in this campaign called “Let’s Beat MS” – an initiative taken by a Pakistani organization that aims to raise awareness about this particular disease in Pakistan and also helps people with MS.

Pakistan has had a rough history with Youtube. The few years that Youtube was banned in the country, Pakistan could not participate in the rising trend of ‘Youtube Stars’. It took years for the ban to be lifted. Now that it has officially been lifted and Google recognizes Pakistan as one of its partner countries, the platform is free to use for all for more than video sharing and streaming purposes. The monetization of videos has made Youtube a platform that is taken seriously by content creators all around.

Although Pakistan does have its share of famous Youtube personalities, what is interesting to note is that it is not just being used by common folks as a platform to showcase their talent. Many of the celebrities belonging to the entertainment industry have started to turn to Youtube as a way of sharing their life and connecting with their fans. Probably the first Pakistani singer/celebrity to use his Youtube channel for the sake of vlogging, Bilal Khan has been vlogging for over a year now.
